Physics Lab Observation – VOLUME RESONATOR
2008-2009

Exp. No:
Date:
VOLUME RESONATOR

AIM:
a) To verify the relation between the Volume of the resonating air column and the frequency
of the note emitted using volume resonator.
b) To find the frequency of the unknown tuning fork.

APPARATUS:
Aspirator bottle with water, 3 or 4 tuning forks (known frequencies), a tuning fork
(unknown frequency), rubber hammer, measuring jar, a beaker.

FORMULA:

If ‘n’ is the frequency of the tuning fork and ‘V’ is the volume of the resonating air
column, then the relation between n & V is given by

n2V = Constant

With the Volume end correction ‘e’ the above relation can be written as

n2 (V+e) = Constant

GRAPH:
Plot a graph taking ‘1/n2’ on X-axis and volume of the resonating air column ‘V’ on Y-
axis. A straight line making an intercept on the negative Y-axis is obtained such as shown in the
adjacent figure. The magnitude of the intercept on the negative Y-axis gives the end correction
‘e’.

V1

e 1/n2

In the above graph, V1 is the Volume of the resonating air column obtained using the tuning fork
with unknown frequency, whose frequency is determined from the corresponding value of ‘1/n2’.

RESULT:

1) The value of n2 (V+e) is found to be constant. Hence the relation between volume of the
resonating air column and the frequency of the note emitted is verified.
2) The frequency of the unknown tuning fork is found to be _________Hz.

Via-Voce:

1) Define ‘note’ in acoustics.

2) Explain the phenomenon of Resonance with an example.
3) What are the various applications of the phenomenon of Resonance?
4) What are the other methods to determine the frequency of an unknown tuning fork?
