drawing of ray from the preceding station to the station
to be occupied by the instrument.

2. (a) Surveying should be carried out from whole to part and

not from part to whole Justify this statement.

(b) Discuss with the help of pertinent expression on the

Slope Correction in connection with distance
measurement.

(c) A steel tape was exactly 30m long at 20C when

supported throughout its length under a pull of 15 Kg.
A line was measured with a pull of 11 Kg applied to
the tape at a mean temperature of 13C and found to
be 810 m long. Given, the cross sectional area of the
tape = 0.033 cm2 ; total weight of the tape = 0.67 Kg ;

for steel 11*106/C; E for steel = 2.1*106 Kg/cm2.

length of the line if the tape was supported during
measurement at every 15m.

3. (a) Discuss with the help of a neat sketch the following

terms in the context of Chain Surveying :
(i) Base Line.
(ii) Check Line.

(b) Discuss with the help of a neat sketches the methods

followed to measure horizontal distance across a wooded
field.

(c) In chaining past a pond, stations P and Q were selected

on opposite sides of the pond. A line PA, 150m long,
was set out to the left of PQ, and a line PB was set
out on the right such that A, Q and B are collinear. The
length of PB was 250m. Also, AQ and QB were
measured to be 125m and 150m, respectively. Determine
the distance PQ.

fore bearing of the line AB is N 3645' W, find the
bearings of all the remaining sides, assuming the work
done in a clock-wise direction.

5. (a) State the differences between of Radiation and

Intersection methods of Plane Table Surveying.

(b) State the Three Point Problem of establishing the

position of instrument station. Explain with neat sketches
the solution of the problem.

Part - II
Answer any three questions.
Two marks for neatness.

(b) Explain briefly how you would verify the accuracy of
fieldwork for profile levelling for a proposed highway. 4
(c) In running fly levels from a benchmark of RL 90,000,
the following readings in m were obtained :
Back sights : 1.290, 3.115, 0.235, 3.755
Fore sights : 0.025, 0.975, 3.565
From the last position of the instruments six (6) pegs at
30m interval are to be set out on a uniform rising
gradient of 1 in 100. The top of the first peg is to have
a RL of 90.125m.
Work out the staff readings required for setting the tops
of the pegs on the given gradient, work out the RLS by
HI method, tabulate the result, show arithmetic check
and relevant calculations.

2. (a) What is contour gradient ? Explain with a sketch how

you can use a contour map for tracing of contour
gradient.

(b) Explain with a sketch how a contour map is used to

determine the intervisibility between two points.
