Questions
1. The Goldfsh method is almost similar to the Soxhlet method except that
the extraction chamber is designed so that the solvent just drip onto and
through the sample rather than drowning it. This reduces the amount of
time required to carry out the extraction, but it has the disadvantage that
the solvent may preferentially take certain routes through the sample and
therefore the extraction is inefficient. This is not a problem in the Soxhlet
method because the sample is always drowned by solvent.

2. The fat content measured here could be different with the one reported in
the nutrition label because the extraction method requires a minimum of 4
hours but it can be continued to days so maybe some of the fat is still
trapped in the feed sample.
3. The dry sample is used in the experiment because Soxhlet was originally
designed for the extraction of a lipid from a solid material. Typically, a
Soxhlet extraction is used when the desired compound has
a limited solubility in a solvent, and the impurity is insoluble in that
solvent.
4. The hazardous chemical used in the experiment need to be handled
correctly by ensuring keep away from fre sources because it is highly
flammable and try not to breath in too much of the fumes from the
chemical.

Summary
The lab was carried out to determine the fat content in feed sample B. The
method used in this experiment is the often used Soxhlet extraction method. This
method is used because compound used has a limited solubility in the solvent,
and the impurity is insoluble in that solvent but fat is soluble. The Soxhlet
apparatus was set up and the boiling process was started with minimal heat and
slowly increases the heat when it reaches a steady boiling phase. The apparatus
was left operating for 4 hours and then the solvent in the extraction thimble is
poured into the round bottom flask and is then evaporated overnight. The
duration of extraction can be continued up to days because the solvent is
recycled back into the Soxhlet apparatus and this can improve the accuracy of
the result obtained. A same experiment can be carried out but the duration of
extracting is manipulated by increasing the duration until the fat content reaches
a constant. Although, this will be time consuming for practical. From the results
obtained, we can say that the feed sample is vegetative materials because it
contains more carbohydrate than fat as animal material feeds may contain
higher fat and protein content.
