In order for a man to achieve an erection when he is aroused, the blood capillaries must
be functioning well, in other words there must be free flow of blood without disruption.
During an erection, the walls of these blood vessels relax and in so doing, allow free
passage and flow of blood. All this is thanks to messages passed on to nerves in the male
reproductive organ from the main command center, the brain. The blood flowing
through the capillary network in the penis arrives at a high pressure and consequently
leads to an erection.
Hence when all is working in order, the brain issues a series of messages which follow
the spinal cord and are delivered to the nerve endings in the male reproductive organ.
Chemical signals called neurotransmitters are secreted into the blood and these are
responsible for the changes that take place. Firstly, the vessels bringing oxygenated
blood to the corpora cavernosa receive the order to relax. This relaxation consequently
enables the free flow of blood into the penis. The blood entering the penis leads to the
enlargement and stiffening of the organ, leading to an erection.
As you can see, it doesnt take much for one to get an erection. So where does the
problem lie when a man cannot have an erection?
Problems begin to arise when the blood vessels are blocked or damaged somehow.
Another common thing that leads to ED is when nerve endings in the penis are not
functioning properly. The tissues in your organ may also be a contributing factor in ED.
On top of that, the lack of a proper diet more often than not is a contributing factor to

rectile dysfunction or as the condition was known in the past, impotence, is not a
state new to man. In fact, scores of scientists, herbalists, physicians and medical
practitioners over the years gave themselves over to the science of trying to
understand impotence and find a solution.
There were many who spoke about natural means of curing the ailment and sought to
remedy the situation with herbs and other plants.
None is more referenced than the first-century scientist, Pliny, who spoke in great
lengths about the different types of aphrodisiacs that were supposed to cure
impotence. The cures that Pliny offered were not the sweetest to the palate, but if one
insisted on following through with them, they were told to brace themselves.
How about some garlic dissolved in wine consumed with coriander? If you are not an

his sleeve, perchance the cremnos agrios plant crushed in pearl barley will do the trick!
If you found any of Plinys recommendations less than pleasant, then I am afraid that
you would have disliked living during the Greek and Roman times, or at least disliked
their impotence medication. The Greeks and Romans, we have to hand it to them, came
up with the most ingenious assumptions about potential cures and remedies, but
perhaps took them a bit too far. For example, taking medicine made from snake parts
doesnt quite sit well with us. The Greeks and Romans believed that since snakes have
the incredible ability to rejuvenate themselves, then perhaps that ability may be
transferred to humans if certain parts of the snake were used in medicine.
Thats not all. How about a classic entre of goat and rooster genitalia for starters? We
bet they didnt tell you what you were eating and simply encouraged you to eat it as it
was medicine that would bring the excitement back into your life and for any
desperate man, it would have been enough to try.

Lizards, especially the larger ones like the skink, were also part of the meals and were
consumed with great gusto in a flurry of white wine so you were too drunk to know
what you were eating.
The fascination with animal parts didnt end in earlier times and surprisingly, youll find
middle age friars recommending wolf penis as a cure for impotence. One such friar of

their elixir would do the trick and heal men. No recorded documents ever point to how
their elixir did except for their very flowery promise of what the potion would do for
men --- allowing men to prolong the embrace and in this manner provide their partners
with proper dalliance to raise their inclination.
As the turn of the nineteenth century dawned, the search for a cure continued and now
doctors were in the game too, making promises with their syrups and mixes. Dr. Brodum
was popular for his Nervous Cordial & Botanical Syrup and so was Samuel-Auguste
Tissot who had his own set of medicine called the Cordial Balm of Gilead. These doctors
you can say were the forerunners of todays erectile dysfunction pharmaceutical giants.
Like today, there were those who advocated the use of cannabis as the cure for all
ailments including impotence. At the forefront of this school of thought was Frederick
Hollick, who genuinely believed that the use of cannabis would not only bring about

As the decades wore on, more and more doctors continued with experiments in the
erectile dysfunction area and many tonics and stimulants were introduced. As can be
assumed, not all of them were rigorously tested to provide the best effects. Some of
these so called tonics actually did more harm than good, but then there was no FDA to
standardize supplements and look into the health and safety aspects of all medication
being sold.

Just before the turn of the millennium, one of the biggest and most popular erectile
dysfunction drugs to ever grace the human race was released --- Viagra. Viagra in a pill,
combined all the work that many had been trying to do over the centuries. It continues
to be one of the favored forms of oral medication approved by the Food and Drug
Administration of America.
Viagra is not only one of the most popular and well known drugs on the market, but it
also enjoyed exclusive rights as the sole leading erectile dysfunction drug worth over
one billion dollars in sales annually until competitors entered the market in 2003.
So for about five years, Pfizer enjoyed free reign in that area of the pharmaceutical
industry until rival companies started producing their own erectile dysfunction drugs.
Today, some of the chief competitors are Eli Lillys Cialis and Bayer AGs Levitra.

American scientists were not the only ones doing such surgeries as French and Russian
scientists were also in the race to find a cure. In 1919 Russian scientist Serge Voronoff
caused a major controversy as he reported how he had transplanted chimpanzee testes
into several men whose sex drives and libido were improved, as he claimed.
In America, the implantation of silicon rods became common procedures in the 70s,
although it is said these rods were not approved by the FDA. As a result, many men
suffered from infections and sadly even after the implants, most still experienced failure.

common and widely looked at methods of treatment are prescription meds. While in no

Here we must make a note and say that the drugs themselves are not capable of giving
a man an erection. Taking a Viagra pill does not mean that a man will get an erection
immediately. What these drugs do is allow nitric oxide to kick into play, allowing
muscles in the penis to relax which permits blood to move freely. The man still requires
sexual stimulation for things to proceed as normal.
But just what is in these drugs and how do they really work? Lets take a closer look at
the three super power drugs below:
Viagra
Probably the worlds most popular sexual performance drug, Viagra has come a long
way, and interestingly enough did not originally start off as a drug for erectile
dysfunction. Viagra, sildenafil citrate, has its origins in the early 90s, 1991 to be precise.
The drug was registered as a treatment for chest pain. Yes, chest pain. However, the
longer the drug stayed on the market, the more its manufacturers realized its potential
as more people reported that it brought about another totally unexpected reaction, an
erection. So Viagra came to be the medication we know of, that has continued to be
prescribed for erectile dysfunction since 1998.

The FDA approved the medication and to date more than 30 million men the world over
have used Viagra at some point in their lives.
Levitra:
After having enjoyed a successful five years of being the sole ranger and player in the
erectile dysfunction game, Viagra saw one of its very first competitors make an entry
point. The new kid on the block was called Levitra. Levitra came out in 2003 and to date
still remains one of the chief competitors and rivals of Viagra. Upon its approval by the
FDA, Levitra was soon a prescribed drug.

The drug works on the same concept and principle as Viagra. Levitra aids blood flow in
the direction of the penis and helps a man get hard and maintain his erection during
intercourse.
It should be taken up to an hour before a man plans to get together with his sexual
partner. This drug has been known to work faster than any of the other two, with men
during clinical trials having reported that some even got an erection 25 minutes after
taking the pill.
Levitra has some advantages over Viagra. It has the ability to work alongside other
illnesses such as diabetes and can be taken by a man who had prostate surgery. These
are important factors that lead doctors to recommend it over other ED drugs on the
market.
Levitra does have its drawbacks though. These include the fact that it should never be
combined with chest pain medication which contains nitrates. Levitra should not be
used in conjunction with alpha-blockers (medication that works for men with elevated
blood pressure or prostate issues).
Levitra is available from pharmacies in 2.5mg, 5 mg, 10 mg and 20mg dosage tablets.
Take only one dosage a day.
Levitra pills cost about the same as Viagra pills - $10 a pill.
Cialis:
Released the same year as Levitra, Cialis is the don of ED drugs on the market. Where
Viagra and Levitra only work for four hours, Cialis does eight times that amount and can
go up to an impressive 36 hours of active service.
Cialis is an oral medication whose absorption into the blood system is not affected by
fatty or greasy food, so it does not need to be taken on an empty stomach the way
Viagra does. However Cialis does have its own drawbacks, which can be rather
unpleasant. These side effects include the man getting an upset stomach, feeling pain
in the back and muscles and also experiencing headaches.
Working in a similar fashion to its counterparts, Cialis encourages an increase in the flow
of blood to the penis as a man becomes aroused. Proven clinically to improve erections
whether the man is suffering from mild to severe ED, Cialis continues to be one of the
top prescribed erectile dysfunction drugs.

Every one of the three drugs has its own downsides. The side effects of Cialis are
generally experienced within 12 to 24 hours of taking the drug, however the symptoms
and pain tend to disappear after two days. Like a hangover really doesnt have a cure,
you just have to wait it out and ride the pain until its gone.
The recommended dosage that one should ideally start with is 10mg of Cialis. When
purchasing these pills, you may purchase them in the 5mg, 10mg or 20mg options.

cases when ED has a physical cause. In addition, these pills are for people who
have not tried the natural route to being cured and simply want to pop pills to
have sex.
While it may seem convenient, taking these pills has its long list of hazards, which we
mentioned in the previous chapter. In addition, you have to take far too many
precautions such as not being able to go out for the next few hours after taking these
pills because youre stuck with an unwanted erection.
ED, as we have seen, can be caused by physical or psychological reasons. And as we
have also addressed in previous chapters, the physical causes of ED can be dealt with
effectively to some degree by the three commercially available and largely successful
drugs on the market.
However, what happens when a mans ED is not caused by a physical problem per se?
What if a man is going through the stress of having to change jobs because he has
decided to relocate? There are so many pressures that can weigh a man down; pressures
that he might not have the courage to tell his partner or anxiety he might carry but feels
too embarrassed to share with anyone. The man may also be eating the wrong types of
food, which eventually disallow him to perform in bed. Whatever the cause may be, the
stress and anxiety will eventually take its toll on the man and will begin to manifest itself
in small ways. ED becomes apparent when the man fails to become hard nearly 50% of
the time he wants to make love with his partner.
What makes this type of ED hard to deal with is the fact that the man needs to be open
to counseling and allow himself to get the necessary help so that he can resume normal
sexual relations. If not dealt with, the pent up sexual frustration and tension can wear
down a relationship. Especially a relationship where the partner is not aware of what
the man is going through.
We are going to look at some other more traditional forms of treatment that have been
used over the decades and continue to be used even today.

Injection Therapy
This is probably one of the more painful options on the list. Injection therapy is when a
man must inject chemicals into his penis, which aid better flow of blood and allow him
to have an erection. In 1995, Caverject was approved by the FDA as one of the very first
injection drugs. Another drug that was also approved is papaverine. Both of these drugs
are injected into the penis minutes before intercourse.
The downside to these two solutions is that they cause terribly painful erections and in
rare cases, the erection continues way after the sexual intercourse. It often ends up
needing medical attention. Not to mention, it probably wont get you and your partner
in the mood when you have to use a needle to inject yourself with a chemical before
sex.
When inserted into the penis, the drugs require about ten minutes until they work. This
solution will generally last for up to an hour. All in all, the process of injecting the drugs
and waiting for them to kick in is rather painful and makes this one of the least favored
options for ED.

your corpora cavernosa a semi-firm penile prosthesis which is made from silicone rods.
These rods are flexible and bend as the need arises. There is also a pump that is placed

decision to undergo surgery. However, we think that surgery is far too invasive and its

decided to opt for a more natural means to treat your ED. There are several
natural and traditional medicines and practices used to treat ED, but it is worth
noting that there are no concrete scientific studies done on any of the methods written

Yohimbe
Yohimbe is a herb whose origins can be traced to the bark of the tree bearing the same
name found in West African countries. Corynanthe yohimbe, as a natural treatment
option, has been available in Europe for more than 80 years and was only approved by
the FDA in the 80s.
The herb has now been commercialized and is sold as an over-the-counter ED treatment
prescription medicine under brand names such as Yohimex and Erex.
With no specific medical research to back up its claims, Yohimbe is believed to work the
same way as big name ED drugs like Cialis, but on a much smaller basis and with a
response time that takes up to six weeks to kick in.
Yohimbe is thought to cause blood vessels in the erectile tissue to relax and thus allow
blood to flow more freely. It is also supposed to stop the blood from flowing out,
allowing men to experience an erection.
Not only does it have this muscle relaxing effect, but Yohimbe is also thought to play a
role around the lower spinal cord responsible for the transmission of sexual signals.
Quite a significant proportion of men, up to 40%, have reported being successful during
sexual intercourse whilst on the Yohimbe pill.
Yohimbe is best prescribed for men whose ED stems from vascular related issues or
those with emotional problems originating in the mind (stress, depression) and those
with diabetes.

Can Yohimbe be taken by men not suffering from ED? Absolutely, unlike other ED
medication, Yohimbe is natural and men who do not suffer from ED and use Yohimbe
claim that the herb helps increase their libido. In some cases it even causes erections to
last longer.
The Yohimbe extract is normally administered in doses of up to 5.4mg, taken thrice a
day. The drawback with Yohimbe is the time it takes to be effective. On average it will
take a man anywhere between three weeks to two months to see results.
Ginkgo Biloba
It is another herb that has no direct and clear medical studies to show just how it
operates, but is used to treat ED. Gingko biloba is prescribed for men whose ED is more
psychological.
It should be avoided by men who suffer from blood disorders and those who use the
blood thinner Coumadin. This is because Gingko biloba is known to cause the clotting
of blood and when mixed with blood thinning medication, can prove a disastrous and
even fatal combination.

physically related. With lower cholesterol levels, you may be able to get off the
medication you have been taking that is causing ED as a side effect. Eating well will

In this chapter, we are going to focus on an aspect that tends to be overlooked by most
people when they think of ED treatments --- good health begins in the kitchen.

because there are foods (fatty foods, over-processed foods) that can lead you to

ED?, the answer is a resounding YES. There is food that can help prevent ED and theres

Dr. Firouz Daneshgari, medical professor at the Case Western Reserve School of
Medicine makes the link that certain foods may help treat ED. Dr. Daneshgari makes the
connection that because erectile problems are mainly the result of poor blood flow to
the penis, food that is known to be good for the vascular system is a good option to
consume for men suffering from ED.
The key then is to find foods that are rich in the necessary nutrients that can boost your
vascular system right? But before looking into the food, just what nutrients are we
looking for?
1. Zinc
Zinc may be just one of the missing links in your list of nutrients to consume in sufficient
quantity. Zinc, is one of those minerals that you rarely ever hear mentioned in the big

The protein arginine in pistachios is well known for aiding blood vessels to relax and
allows more blood flow. If you want to try it out for yourself, feel free to eat these nuts
for three weeks, every day, like the men in the pistachio study who after the three weeks
reported marked changes in their sex lives. The men, some of whom suffered from ED,
reported an increase in the incidence of getting an erection and increased sexual desire.

5. Antioxidants
Antioxidants, which are also known as phyto (plant) nutrients are found in watermelon

Take four plates and share the asparagus equally amongst them. Using a slotted
spoon take out each of the eggs and use a paper towel to absorb moisture from

Add water that covers the chicken in a saucepan, cover it and allow it to simmer

to ensure that it gets thoroughly cooked through. When it is done, remove the

chicken into shreds with the help of some forks.
In another pot, place some water and bring it to boil. You are then going to add
the broccoli and cook it for five minutes maximum or until it gets tender. Once it

Once finished, take the tomatoes and take out the cores and slice them into
halves. Remove the seeds and throw them away. Place the tomatoes onto some
paper towels with their cut side facing down to drain them.

Take a large skillet and heat it over high heat. Take the cut tomatoes and brush
the cut sides with oil then place them in the hot pan. Let them cook until they
begin to char and get tender. Take the oil and brush the uncooked side then turn

cooked, take the tomatoes out of the pan and set them in a plate. Leave the pan
un-cleaned.
Place three tablespoons of oil into the skillet and add the spices and salt. Keep
stirring until they blend together. Gently pour in the lemon juice and stir, then
remove skillet from the heat source. Dont worry if the browned parts rise to the
surface, we want them to rise.
Proceed to cut up the tomatoes and add them to the bowl with the chicken and
broccoli. Add the dressing you made in the skillet, mix it all together, and there
you have one delicious tasty salad!

Boil enough water to soak the mushrooms in. In a small bowl, soak the
mushrooms until they have softened then strain them in a sieve (keep the liquid

In another small bowl, using the soaking liquid from the mushrooms, stir a
tablespoon of the soaking liquid into some corn starch until you get a smooth
consistency and put aside.
Take a skillet and place two teaspoons of oil into it and heat over the stove. Once
the oil has heated, fry the shallots until they are soft. Proceed to add the
mushrooms and allow them to cook until they are done. Put in the wine and cook,
making sure you are mixing well, you want the mixture to reduce by as much as
1/2.
Take the left over soaking liquid and add it to the skillet and allow everything to
just simmer and cook through together. The sauce will reduce and that is okay.
Take the corn-starch consistency that was in reserve and add it into the cooking
sauce, stirring continuously until the sauce begins to thicken. Once thickened,
turn the heat off and add lemon juice and butter, and season with salt and
pepper.
Take another skillet and place some oil and allow it to heat up. While the oil is
heating up, take the salmon and sprinkle salt and pepper on it and rub it in well.
Cook the salmon in the skillet until it is well done.

in it. Once the oil is ready, remove the kofta balls from the fridge and add them
carefully to the oil. Fry each one until they are golden brown and done on the

another bowl and leave to cool down.
Preheat oven to 350F and spray cooking spray over a rimmed baking sheet.

You want the rice grains to be as small as possible, so transfer the cooked rice to
a cutting board and as carefully as you can, cut the grains of rice into tiny pieces
(requires a bit of patience) with a big knife. Once cut, place the rice into the bowl
where the vegetables are and add the egg and beef. Mix and knead until
everything is homogenously mixed, then shape the mixture into a loaf (10 inches
by 5 inches) and place it onto the baking sheet. Take the chutney and spread it
generously on top of the loaf, place in the oven and bake for an hour until the
meatloaf has thoroughly cooked and a toothpick comes out clean when poked
into it.
Allow the meatloaf to cool for a quarter of an hour before serving.

Prepare a 7 x 11 inch baking tray by spraying it with cooking spray before you
begin making this meal and set it aside.
Take a skillet and add 2 teaspoons of oil and allow it to heat up. Once hot, fry
onions until soft then remove them from the pan and place them into a bowl.
Add some more oil to the pan and turn the heat up from medium to high. This
time you are going to fry the mushrooms until they are soft. Once they are done
move them to the bowl with the onions. In that bowl season the mushrooms with
salt and pepper as you toss the mushrooms and onion to combine them.
Take another bowl and put the nutmeg, spinach and ricotta in it and some
pepper and mix thoroughly.
Pour a cup of marinara sauce into the baking tray and then cut up each slice of
bread into four uniform parts. Place the bread on sauce then add the ricotta onto
the bread. Take the leftover bread and put it over the ricotta. When that is done,
take the mushrooms and sprinkle them over the bread, cover with mozzarella
and remaining marinara sauce. Its okay if the tray is filled to the brim. Set this
dish aside.
Before putting into the oven, take a small bowl and combine the milk and eggs
together, then take this mixture and pour it bit by bit over the baking tray with
its contents --- remember to use a fork to poke holes into the top of the casserole
to allow the milk/egg mixture to seep its way into the bread. Then spray one side
of cooking foil with cooking spray (or smear oil) and cover the baking tray with
the oiled side facing the filling in the tray. Place in the fridge for a minimum of
two hours (for best results leave overnight).
Preheat oven to 375F and bake without a covering for 40 minutes. With ten
minutes to go until done, sprinkle some cheese (Parmesan) and bake again until
the cheese has puffed and browned. Take out from the oven and allow to cool
for at least 15 minutes. Serve with a parsley garnish.

What is Propionyl-L-Carnitine?
The bodys main building block for bone, skin, and tissue is protein. Protein is vital and
crucial to your body. With over 10,000 different types of protein in your body needed
for effective functioning, you have to ensure an adequate supply. But these proteins are
made up of much smaller molecules known as amino acids. These amino acids join
together to form long chains that are then later referred to as proteins.

There are over 500 amino acids, but the body only needs of 20 of them to create all the
protein molecules vital to the existence of life. Propionyl-L-carnitine is just one of those

This dosage is stipulated and research shows that if you take a lower dosage, you may
not see the results you are aiming for.
As you can see, dietary supplements may be useful in treating ED, but they should be

Physical Causes
Male sexual arousal has a delicate balance and system that operates it. The brain is
linked to the nerves, which work hand in hand with the hormones. Emotions also play a
crucial part in the entire process, not to mention muscles and blood vessels. A
disturbance in any one of these can trigger a problem e.g. atherosclerosis (this is when
blood vessels become hard), chronic illness, Peyronies disease (this is when the penis
has suffered trauma and contains scar tissue), high blood pressure, diabetes (60% of
men with diabetes experience ED frequently), prostate cancer treatments (radiation,
chemotherapy), and more.
Medication e.g. blood pressure pills (in particular beta blockers) and some
antidepressants are also known to make it tough to have an erection.
Psychological causes
When a man is under pressure to please, is facing stress, or is depressed, it tends to be
much harder for him to have an erection.
Certain medication may also be an interference with the natural order of things in the
mans reproductive organs.

You see, no medication is perfect. While certain medication is designed to fix specific
problems within your body, its always almost impossible to know how other systems
in your body will act or react to that medication. So while you initially took the
medication to cure problem A, you may end up with problems B, C, and D.
The drugs on the market currently prescribed for ED are sildenafil, which is more
commonly known as Viagra and tadalafil aka Cialis and another lesser known drug,
vardenafil aka Levitra. These drugs are designed to improve blood flow and get you to
relax so you can perform your best. However, they have a long list of side effects also.
Sex therapy is also another favored approach to dealing with impotence. Other less
favored options include penile injections, the use of vacuum pumps and the last option
for most people is surgery.
There are other more natural methods, which we have presented in this book, that you
can undertake if you do not like the idea of taking tablets with severe side effects the
rest of your life.
When the problem is psychological, counseling is generally advised.
Because of their unique dispositions, each treatment method has its own advantages
and disadvantages, which are important for you to weigh in and consider before
starting off on a path.

Blood vessel disorders: Diseases that affect the arteries, veins and capillaries are very
problematic when it comes to ED because of the reduced flow of blood. Atherosclerosis
is one of the major culprits in this category of blood vessel disorders. High blood
pressure and high cholesterol also contribute significantly to increasing the incidence
of ED in overweight men.

Cancer: Prostate cancer is problematic. The cancer itself is not the major worry and
neither is it the major cause of ED. The treatment of the cancer is what generally causes
ED.
Diabetes: Medically referred to as Diabetes Mellitus, this illness can be subdivided into
two categories, Type 1 diabetes and Type II diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic sickness that
damages blood vessels and nerves in the body. High blood sugar levels are the main
cause of diabetes. When not kept in check, diabetes can seriously affect a mans
potency.
Kidney problems: Hormones are part and parcel of the chain reaction that takes place
to arouse a man. Kidney disease may affect your hormones and the way blood flows to
your genitals and other areas of your nervous system. To make matters worse, the
medication used for kidney related issues causes ED.
Nerve and Brain disorders: If the command center is affected, then it is almost
impossible for a man to be turned on and maintain an erection. The nervous system
plays a crucial part in enabling one to have an erection. It is important to note here that
smoking, and brain related illnesses such as Alzheimers and nerve related illnesses such
as Parkinsons contribute significantly to the cases of men suffering from nerve and
brain related ED.

Hormonal problems: Yes, men get hormonal too. A mans sex drive is a careful balance
