Reflective Journal Part 1:

Introduction :
I am a current BSC150 student and have finished four weeks of
study so far. I have come from a different country with different
culture. I grew up in India. I completed year twelve with three
science subjects Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Science has always
been my interesting subject of study. I always found it interesting
and innovative. After settled in Australia few years ago, I decided to
continue my passion and interest towards science. The study
system in my past country of living is so different than here that I
found it very difficult to adapt to the study system of here in the
beginning. Before getting into BSC 150, I first finished Ontrack
Course along with ESL classes and then I finished one unit of
BSC100(Exercise Science) successfully last semester as this was a
task given to me by the Murdoch University in order to be eligible to
enroll for future undergraduate science courses as this is a part of
Universitys study program for students who finished their schooling
in a different country and language. I speak Punjabi language at
home, which is my mother tongue. Since English is not my first
language, I have to put extra efforts and more time towards my
class assignments and tasks given. Since I have enrolled in BSC150,
I am very excited and determined to towards my course.

Journal 1 :
Being a student of BSC 150, I have been learning different types of
science involved in this course. Every time I attended classroom
new areas and aspects of Philosophy of science were discussed. I
got to learn so many things by attending my lectures from week 1 to
week 4. First week lecture was all about epistemology, how people
originate their knowledge from different sources like science,
religion and mysticism. With the help of the lecture, I understood
rationalism, skepticism etc. It all helped me distinguishing between
the belief and knowledge. On our first day of tutorial class, my
classmates and I were asked to give our introductions to the whole
class and the teacher. Our teacher also introduced himself to the
whole class. Our class teacher gave us some tasks to don in the
class room about the role of science in the media.

Journal 2 :
During my second week of study, the lecture given to us was about
if science and religion could ever be friends. The lecture reflected all
the facts proving how they both could never be friends. We also
learned for justification how science gains ideas by doing
experiments whereas religion beliefs in spirituality through the
knowledge of intuition and mysticism. With the information given in
the lecture, I managed to answer all the questions asked in the
practice quiz which is a part of our assignments. The questions
include topics like real problem with climate change, confused about
diet health and exercise and also if Google and internet are making
us stupid. There was also a discussion about harmfulness and
benefits between science athletes and sports. In our tutorial class,
our teacher asked the class to find various articles of role of science
in media and discuss about them with other students in the class.

Journal 3 :
During my third and fourth weeks, I came to learn about the nature
of science and how world believes in science after scientists do
experiments and science believes that knowledge only comes from
doing experiments. During this time tutorial class also reflected
what role science play in media. In tutorial class, we were given
some articles to find and then to discuss those topics with your
colleagues for observation, hypothesis and conclusion. My
experience and knowledge towards nature of science have been
increasing gradually as my course progresses. One of the lectures
was about climate change and how the panel members on climate
change are looking for reasons what make global warming and how
climate change affecting human lives and our planet. During his
period of time, In our tutorial class I learned about how computer
modeling of vaccination works. We discussed about how it benefits
the human lives from diseases. Vaccination process also decreases
the chance of the disease to develop in the body. Some people dont
like to get vaccinated because of being allergic to them end up

getting more prone towards developing diseases compare to who

get vaccinated.
