New Exhibits at the Centre

Permanent Displays
Staff will be using the 2016 season to refresh and enhance a number of exhibits in the Carmody House and
the Scott Township Municipal Hall as part of an ongoing effort to enhance visitor experience at the Centre.
We are excited to change up these exhibits as it allows us to bring items out of storage that may not have
been seen by the public for a while. The Museums collection grows each year as we accept donations of
artifacts, archival materials and photographs that preserve our important local history. We take any opportunity to showcase our history through permanent and special displays.

If you visited us last year, you may have noticed that a number of the museums heritage buildings acquired
new information panels recounting the buildings history. We will be designing new information panels for
the remaining buildings this year.
We will keep you updated on these projects through the e-newsletter, and hope to see you at the Centre
this season.

An Uxbridge Story in Stone - Stone Sculpture Sesquicentennial Project

This season the Historical Centre is pleased to host an Artist-in-Residence. Local sculptor Fly Freeman
will be on site several days a week carving a new piece of public art celebrating Uxbridges history. Due
to be unveiled in 2017 for Canadas 150th birthday (final location to be decided), it will be fascinating to
watch An Uxbridge Story in Stone take shape. Fly will be using traditional hand tools, such as hammer
and chisel, for her work and the public is invited to visit and watch her at work. Watch for details about
Flys schedule and related workshops and lectures that will be held at the museum. An Open House for
the project will be held on June 9th at 7pm in the Museum Schoolhouse.
Museum staff and members of the Townships
Arts and Visual Enhancement Committee
(AVEC) who are leading this project, have developed education programs related to the
sculptures theme. School classes are invited
to come to watch Fly at work and take part in
related programming. Call the museum to book
your school visit .
The Historical Centre is honoured to be hosting Fly Freeman and this project. We hope you
will visit the Historical Centre to watch this
wonderful tribute to Uxbridges heritage unfold. Artist Fly Freeman standing next to a full size replica of the
stone panels she will be carving.

Has it really been 45 years?

On April 6, 1971, a dedicated group of history-minded individuals concerned about preserving the
heritage of Uxbridge Township came together to form the first board of the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society. By the next month they were negotiating to establish the Quaker Hill School as the site
of a museum.
The Uxbridge-Scott Museum was officially opened on May 27th, 1972. From one building and a small collection of artifacts, the Uxbridge Historical Centre, as it is now known, has grown to ten buildings and a huge
collection of artifacts and archival materials, most donated by the local community. Such an achievement
would not have been possible without the effort and support of a huge number of volunteers, and a supportive Town Council and local community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made
this museum a reality and continue to help keep the history of Uxbridge Township alive for present and future generations.

Uxbridge Dog Park

If youve driven past the Historical Centre lately, you may have noticed the ongoing construction on the new Fire Hall (along Brock St.) and the work being
done in the field south of the Museum site (at the corner of Con. 6 and Brock
Street). This is the site for the new Uxbridge Dog Park, a large fenced-in area
where our 4-legged friends can roam and play off-leash. The latest news is that
the Dog Park is due to open in the Fall.

Start Your Uxbridge Geocaching Treasure Quest at Uxbridge Historical Centre

As part of Uxbridges Healthy Kids Community Challenge Initiatives, your family can
take part in a Geocaching treasure quest to earn a collectible Trail Capital of Canada geo-coin. Stop by the Historical Centre to pick up your passport and instructions
and, in case you dont own your own GPS unit or smartphone, you can borrow a
GPS unit from the Centre.
What is Geocaching? Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled
devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then search for the geocache
(container) hidden at that location. A cache always contains a logbook or log sheet for you to log your find,
and may contain treasures that you can take, as long as you leave something of equal value behind for
the next finder. Geocaching is a great activity for all ages!

Do you Like to Play Horseshoes?

Did you know that the Historical Centre has two horseshoe pitches on site that the public can use? If you
like to play horseshoes, or would like to learn, visit our pitches (between the Gould-Carmody House and
Nesbitt shed on site) to enjoy a fun game on top of the panoramic Quaker Hill. The pitches are free to use,
please bring your own horseshoes outside of business hours.
We are considering starting a Horseshoe Club for men & women and would meet once a week to play
Horseshoes. If this is something you would be interested in joining call Bob Kirvan at 905 852 9176 or by
email at rkirvan@interhop.net. for further information.

Weddings and Events at the Centre

The Centre has been experiencing an increase in wedding and special event bookings
in the last few years, and this year the trend continues with multiple weddings booked
so far. The Centre is a beautiful venue to hold a wedding or event with its historic buildings, panoramic view, and heritage gardens. Do you have an event coming up? We offer very reasonable rates and yours will be the only special event taking place here at
that time. Call or email us to book a consultation with staff about your event. Contact us
at 905-852-5854 or museum@town.uxbridge.on.ca.

Our Condolences
We were very sad to hear of the passing of Elsie Wood, a much loved Uxbridge resident, tireless volunteer for
many community organizations, and a long serving Historical Society Board member. Elsie and her late husband Bill Wood were involved with the establishment of the museum and active volunteers at the Centre
throughout the years. Our condolences to Elsies family and friends she will be greatly missed.

News from the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society

I am glad to be able to communicating to you in the June newsletter and bring the latest information from the Historical
Society to you, our members. We held our AGM and Public Meeting on Tuesday May 17 at the Legion. Our speaker
was Jody Mitic, a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran who served in Afghanistan and was wounded in battle and lost both
of his legs and has persevered and flourished with his life. We moved the event to the Legion due to the anticipated
large crowd and they didnt disappoint as we had over 160 people in attendance. Uxbridge's own Ted Barris interviewed
Jody and engaged questions from the audience. Blue Heron Books sold out Jodys books (and he stayed and signed
every one!) and it was a terrific evening!
Heritage Days planning is in full swing and we have decided to make some more adjustments to the format. On Saturday August 27, we will be holding a Hoedown at the Museum grounds from 7 to 11 pm under a big tent. The Hoedown
is an outdoor celebration fundraiser with live music, country style BBQ dinner, best costume awards, award winning
craft beer, cider, and wine. On Sunday, we will be holding our traditional Heritage Days events and exhibits on the Museum grounds with all the buildings open, Kids Zone, antique tractors and cars, live music at the Gazebo.
We will be holding a really neat new event on Sept 4 on the Museum Grounds. The Rev-It-Up Hot Rod and Custom
Show! It's an annual event that has been held annually for many years. The event will be raising money for the Historical Society for us to put towards projects for the Museum. You can see the details here http://www.roddermagazine.ca/
revitup.htm
The Society is reviving the Allan McGillivray bursary for a deserving Uxbridge Secondary School who is pursuing their
studies in History. As you know, USS students travel to Europe almost annually for a historical study trip to Vimy Ridge
(in April 2017 for the 100th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge) and to other countries such as Italy. We have committed Society funds on an annual basis and accepting additional donations to top this amount up. At this point, the bursary is $
1,200 (Note: $ 500 from the Society and $ 700 donated so far from Society members). We are working with Uxbridge's
Tish McDonald, the teacher who organizes the Vimy Ridge tours, on the details.
In partnership with Wynn Walters, Uxbridge's renowned sculptor (most recently with the life size statue of Lucy Maude
Montgomery at the Leaskdale Manse) is working on plans to commission another life size sculpture of another important
Uxbridgian - Lt Col Sam Sharpe. We continue the Society's good work to ensuring that his legacy of honour and valour
and also dealing with mental health issues in the form of PTSD is preserved and lessons learned from his life. It was
one of our own Bob Kirvan who highlighted Sam Sharpe's local history to then MP Erin O'Toole and from there Mr
O'Toole has been a great supporter. Historical Society President Brad Buss was fortunate enough to be in attendance
at the 3rd Annual Sam Sharpe Mental Health breakfast held in Ottawa on May 5th at the Parliament Buildings co-hosted
by MP Erin O'Toole and retired Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire.

We will be reaching out for Membership renewals and are very thankful for your continued support. Your Membership

An Evening with Master Cpl. Jody Mitic

Meet Our Student Staff...

Kathleen Vahey, Collections Management Assistant
Hello! My name is Kathleen Vahey and I'm very excited to be returning to the Uxbridge Historical Centre as the Collections Management Assistant for a second summer of learning and fun. In April I completed my undergraduate degree in
Ancient Mediterranean Studies (with minors in History and Women and Gender Studies) from Wilfrid Laurier University
in Waterloo, Ontario. With my love for history as well as the experience I gained at the Centre last year and after many
discussions with my professors and the curators here, I was confident in the decision to continue my education learning
about museums. Therefore, I will be attending the University of Toronto for the next two years while I complete a Masters of Museum Studies.
I'm delighted to experience more at the Historical Centre this summer and gather even more knowledge about museums
and the history of Uxbridge. I look forward to meeting you at the Centre this summer!
All the best,
Kathleen V.
Alyssa Jeffrey Historical Interpreter
Hello everyone! My name is Alyssa Jeffrey and I am very excited to be working at the Uxbridge Historical Centre this
summer as the Historical Interpreter! In September I will be going into my fourth year at Trent University studying English Literature and Cultural Studies. I want to continue my education after my undergraduate and go for a Masters in Library and Information Sciences where I hope to focus my studies on archiving to keep my options open for museum
studies. I have always had a passion for history and am very excited to learn more about the local history as well as
teach others as they visit the site this summer. I have lived in Port Perry, just 15 minutes East of Uxbridge, my whole life
and throughout that time I always enjoyed visiting Uxbridge and exploring its beautiful natural landscape as well as the
many historical sites it has to offer. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this community and help share its
intriguing history with others. I can't wait to see you here sometime this summer!
Sincerely,
Alyssa J.
Carly McAdam Historical Centre and Tourism Reception
Hello! Its great to be back! My name is Carly McAdam and I am returning to the Historical Centre for my third summer
in a row. As an update, I have just graduated from Trent University with a Bachelors Degree in English Literature with
the accompanying Deans List honours. I specialized in Middle English and childrens literature, but in my last year took
a variety of Canadian literature courses which I greatly enjoyed. Ive had an amazing experience away at university
and am ready to take on whatever waits for me in the future! For the present, I am happy and fortunate enough to return to the Historical Centre and work alongside the amazing summer staff. We have lots planned so be sure to stop in
and ask me or any other of the Museum staff about whats going on!
See you on the Museum grounds,
Carly M.

Lecture: Every Trail Has A Story: Heritage Travel in Canada

Thursday, September 22nd at 7pm in the Schoolhouse
Join local author, outdoor adventurist, educator, and story-teller Bob Henderson
for a talk about following historical trails, heritage travel, and stories from across
all of Canada East to West - North to South. Canada is packed with intriguing
places for travel where heritage and landscape interact to create stories that fire
our imagination. Scattered across the land are incredible tales of human life
over the centuries. From the Majorville rock formation (dated as being older than
Stonehenge), through the systems of walking trails developed by pre-contact
Native Peoples, and the fur trade routes, to the more recent grand stories of the
Chilkoot Gold Rush of 1897, Bob Henderson, the traveller, captures our living
history in its relationship to the land. This talk is by donation, please arrive early
