SITE HISTORY

The present entrance to the Park maintenance yard was once the entrance, designed by Fox and Gale in 1902, to the Rose Garden. It
is said that Mrs. Anderson often had afternoon tea with her friends in the small house with orange ceramic roof. The park maintenance
area was a vegetable garden. There was also an area called the Walled garden which included large greenhouses. The parking lot on the
side of the hill across from the skating rink was a tennis court lined with columns, a balustrade, and a pergola. It was also designed by
Fox and Gale in 1902. The skating rink is on the site of a formal Italian garden designed by landscape architect Charles Platt. Platt was
responsible for bringing the design of formal Italian Renaissance style gardens to America. At the north end of the rink is the dedication
plaque that reads, This garden was built in 1901 and called Weld. Platt also designed the gardens for the private Brandegee estate
that is further down on Newton Street. The Italian garden consisted of a bowling green, a pine grove with walks framed by statues, and
then a formal Italian garden with a pergola. The design also included vegetation sculptured into playful beasts, many Italian pots and an
elaborate garden. Not knowing what to do with one of the vacant houses, the Town tore it down in 1955 as well as removed the Italian
garden to make way for the skating rink. The skating rink was built in 1958; the warming hut was added in 1958. Larz Anderson Park
and all the buildings and structures on the property are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2010, the Brookline community honored Brookline native Olympic Gold Medalist Jack Kirrane with the dedication ceremony of the
Jack Kirrane Skating Rink at Larz Anderson Park. Kirrane is most remembered as a member of the American 1948 and 1960 Winter
Olympics Hockey teams, winning the gold medal in 1960.
