The Sequestering Properties of Copolymer Containing Acrylic Acid Derivatives

Abstract
Organic and inorganic chelating agents such as EDTA(Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid),
NTA(Nitrilotriacetic acid) and TPP(Tripolyphosphate) have been used to control water
hardness. But, these chelating agents cause environmental problems, such as
eutrophication and carcinogenisis. In order to increase metal-sequestering capacity,
various copolymers containing acrylic acid, nonylphenol and/or maleic acid moieties
have been synthesized. Sequestering properties of synthesized copolymers has been
studied by calcium selective ion electrode. As a result, sequestering properties of
synthesized copolymers are very higher than organic and inorganic chelating agents such
as EDTA, NTA and TPP.

Chelate is a compound characterized by the presence

of bonds from two or more bonding sites within the
same ligand to a central metal ions.
