TYPES OF OIL & GAS WELLS

OIL WELL:
An oil well is a boring in the
earth that is designed to bring petroleum oil
hydrocarbons to the surface.
A hole drilled or dug in the earth
from which
petroleum flows or is pumped.

Most oil wells have intially natural

drives for the crude oil to produce up to the
surface but after some time depleted wells
have not neccesary enough pressure are

devised such as the air lift. Above shown is

the pump jack for pumping the crude oil.

GAS WELL:
A well that is designed to
produce mainly or only natural gas may be
termed
as
a
gas
well.
Usually natural gas pressure in the reservoir is
good enough to flow up to the surface
independenlty and does not require any
secondary methods for the production. After
the gas is produced it is delivered to the
customer through pipelines from the well
bore.
A well that primarily produces
natural gas.

WILDCAT WELL:
The term wildcat drilling probably has its
origins in the fact that drilling activity in the
first half of the 20th century was often
undertaken in remote geographical areas.
Wildcats are drilled on a certain location
where little or no geological information is
available. The site may have been selected
because of wellls drilled some distance from
the proposed location but on a terrain that
appeared similar to the proposed site .
Rank wildcats are drilled seldom in todays
industry. Well costs ar so high that gambling
on wellsite selections is not done in most
cases.In addition numerous drilling prospects
with reasonable productive potential are
available from several sources.
Because of their remoteness and distance
from populated areas, some of these locations
may have been or appeared to be, infested
with wildcats and other untamed creatures.
Presently with global energy companies

having scoured much of the earths surface,

including oceans, for oil and gas few areas
remain unexplored for their energy potenrtial.

EXPLORATORY WELLS:
The process of drilling for oil or natural gas in
an unproven area that has no concrete
historic production records and has been
unexplored as a site for potential oil and gas
output.
Exploratory wells are drilled in areas that
have been previously shown to contain oil or
natural gas. They may also drilled in areas
near existing wells to find other reservoir of
oil or natural gas. These wells are drilled in
locations that have undergone seismic testing
to determine the depth and thickness of
potential sources of natural gas. As the wells
are being drilled the engineers analyze the
various rock layers to determine which layers
contain organic-rich shale and are potentially
sources of natural gas. Exploratory wells are
usually drilled only vertically, with horizontal

drilling only occuring if the well is believed to

be productive.

PRODUCING WELL:
A well that is completed and produces or is
capable of producing oil and/or gas. The term
production well is commonly used to
describe wells from which natural gas is
actively flowing and being captured. In some
cases exploratory wells may become
production wells; however not all exploratory
wells have become production wells.
After a well has been drilled, it must be
completed before oil and gas production can
begin. After completion a well is ready to
produce hydrocarbons so perforations are
made in the well and production starts with
the reservoir natural pressure. When the
pressure in the well depletes artificial

production methods are attempted such as

artificial lift or pump jacks.

DEVELOPMENT WELL:
A well drilled in a proven producing area for
the production of oil or gas. A development
well is drilled to a depth that is likely to be
productive so as to maximize the chances of
success. A development well stands in
contrast to an exploratory well which is one
that is drilled to find oil or gas in an unproved
area. As a result dry or exploratory wells. It is
also known as exploitation well.

INJECTION WELL:
A well in which fluids are injected rather than
produced, the primary objective typically
being to maintain reservoir pressure.
Two main types of injection are common: gas
and water.

Separated gas from production wells or

possibly imported gas may be re-injected into
the upper gas section of the reservoir. Water
injection wells are common offshore, where
filtered and treated seawater is injected into a
lower water bearing section of reservoir.
A deep well into which water or pressurized
gas is pumped in order to push petroleum
resources out of underground reservoirs
toward production wells so as to increase
their yield.

APPRAISAL WELL:
An appraisal well will give us detailed
information
about
the
geology
and
groundwater in the area. The main objective
of the well is to confirm the thickness of sand
layer. In addition we will measure the physical
and
mechanical
properties
(dynamic
response) of the formation and collect sample

materials from different depths so we can

make a detailed description of the geological
conditions in the area. It is drilled down to
325 meters.

STEP-OUT:
A well drilled at a later time over remote
undeveloped portions of a partially developed
