Use the following dichotomous key in order to distinguish between the rocks that you have in
the laboratory.
1.Rocks
made
up
of
fragments
from
other
rocks.. Go to 2
- Rocks not made up of fragments .. Go to 3

2.- Fragments larger than 2 mm in size.

- Fragments shorter than 2 mm in size.

Conglomerates
Sandstones

3.- Rocks with foliation.

- Rocks without foliation.

4.- Dark grey rock

- Its minerals are arranged in bands

ACTIVITY 1: Write the name of the following rocks using the dichotomous key.

ACTIVITY 2: Classified all the rocks in these four groups:

1.- If they are made up of visible crystals, they are:

2.- If they have cavities and few or no visible crystals, they are:
3.- If they are made up of fragments of other rocks, they are:
4.- If they are arranged in layers, they are:

ROCKS.
PLUTONIC ROCKS
VOLCANIC ROCKS
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
METAMORPHIC ROCKS

ACTIVITY 3: DISTINGUISH BETWEEN LIMESTONE AND QUARTZITE:

Sedimentary rocks also include some rocks that are not made up of fragments of other rocks,
the most important: LIMESTONE.
Some metamorphic rocks are not arranged in layers such us QUARTZITE
Limestone can easily be identified because it reacts with acids, producing bubbles.

ACTIVITY 4: Complete the following scheme:

ROCKS

PLUTONICS ROCKS

If they are made

up of fragments of
other rocks.

BASALT

SLATE

ACTIVITY 5:

Fossils are the remains or traces of an organism from the past that have
been preserved. Most fossils have been preserved in rocks. The process in
which an organic substance is replaced by a mineral one is called
fossilization.
CLASSIFY THE FOSSILS USING THE FOLLOWING DICHOTOMOUS KEY:
1.- Organism with shell.
- Organism without shell.

2.- Shell made of two valves

- Shell made of one valve

3.- Both valves are symmetrical.

The two valves are not symmetrical.

4.- Shell with spiral shape: rolled up in an axis..

- Shell with spiral shape: rolled up in a plane

Ammonites

5.- Pentaradial symmetry, the body can be divided into five Echinoderm
parts
- Bilateral symmetry, the body is divided into three segments. Trilobites
