Accessibility in the

What is Assistive
Technology (AT)?
AT is any form of
technology (high or low)
that aids individuals with
disabilities in mobility,
daily tasks, personal care
and safety, communication,
job duties, medical
treatment, exercise,
recreational activities, and
creative expression. With
possibilities afforded via
AT, developers continue to

Digital Literacy
What is digital literacy? How can one get it? When do
we need it? Digital literacy is the ability to understand/
use digital devices and interpret digital content.

On campus, Pathway students attend classes and

participate with UCLA students in the many
social, recreational, and cultural activities of a
major university."

Digital literacy is required on a daily basis for tasks

such as communication, work related activities, school
assignments, shopping, travel, recreation. Digital
literacy can fill a communication gap for individuals
with difficulty speaking or articulating words.

For more information or request a tour, please

contact UCLA Pathway at (310) 794-1235 or
pathway@uclaextension.edu .

Austim Expressed provides specialized training/lessons

to help adolescents to develop their digital literacy/life
skills. They have different modules for understanding
the Internet, safety, daily activities, education, and
professional development.

Nationwide reports of missing perons with

disabilities calls for greater safety training.
Programs like Project GET SAFE in hospitals,
schools, day treament programs, and residential
facilities helps reduce safety risks and protect the
vulnerable segment of our population. This
includes individuals with disabilities, children, and
seniors. Please visit Project GET SAFE Training
& Resources Center for access to web-based
safety lessons.

Common shortage of manpower in hospitals,

residential facilities, and day treatment programs

that are critical to personal safety. Furthermore,
individuals with disabilities have challenges

when humans are not.

Global Impact

Global AccessibilityAwareness Day (GAAD)

CUR8ABLE: Fashion with Accents of

Assistive Technology (AT)

The virtual world poses barriers for persons with

disabilities just as the physical world does. The fifth
Global Accessbility Awareness Day (GAAD),
celebrated on May 19, 2016. "The purpose of
GAAD is to get people talking, thinking and
learning about digital (web, software, mobile,
etc.) accessibility and users with different
disabilities."

Did you know that contemporary and accessible

fashion for people using wheelchairs exists?
Stephanie Thomas, accessible fashion sylist and
CUR8ABLE Founder, has filled the void for
refined clothing and accessories for individuals
with physical disabilities (use of wheelchairs,
walkers, crutches, prosthetics).

GAAD co-founders, Joe Devon, a web developer,

and Jennison Asuncion, a web accessbility
specialist, conceptualized and promoted this day as
an opportunity to share technology developments,
training, and online forums for assistive technology.

Stephanie has "followed clothing trends for

people with disabilities for 23 years. "As a
disability fashion stylist, her goal is to create
beautiful, powerful images that challenge and
ultimately change negative perceptions of
people with disabilities." Ms. Thomas actively
seeks fashion options that offer "style, comfort,
and confidence" to persons with disabilities.

GAAD in-person activities took place in various

cities worldwide. There was also a virtual event
hosted by Tobii Dynavox for advanced windows
control for eyegaze and PEAT (Partnership on
Employment and Accessible Technology)Talks
regarding success of WWW and W4A
Accessiblity Hackathon.

To find out more about stress-free shirts and

adaptive stretch denim jeans,accessible
accessories, visit Stephanie's website,
CUR8ABLE. She provides individuals with
disabilities more autonomy, choice, and selfexpression in dressing themselves.

GAAD's Twitter page, @gbla11yday, included

Retweets of winBeta news, "Microsoft highlights
