Discussion 2B My Five Year Plan


Abstract
The purpose of this discussion is to develop a five-year professional development program and
touch on how I will incorporate this plan into my PDQP. I will also discuss my plans for
presenting my professional development plan to a grade level, subject level, county office or
other audience.

Year 1 (2016 2017)


- Obtain a full time teaching position at the intermediate level within the
Sacramento City Unified School District.
- Start to plan specific units that I intend to do throughout my first year of
teaching.
- Familiarize myself with other curriculum and standards that students will be
expected to know throughout the year.
- Make a point to speak with the principal and other grade level teachers to
gain information about the school.
- Look into students cumulative files to gain some information about the
students that will be in my class.
- Set up times to observe specific lesson from other teachers at the school.
- Become more involved with my position as the Education Advisor for the
U.C. Davis and Sacramento State chapters of Pi Kappa Alpha.
- Gain some insight into how they run their education program, and begin
making notes regarding changes that can be made to make the program more
efficient.
Year 2 (2016 2017)
- Implement two new learning projects to support standards within grade
level.
- Make a point to meet with grade level colleagues to discuss curriculum and
assessment data throughout the year in order to maintain grade level
continuity.
- Attend the Summer Institute teacher conference in Los Angeles in July.
- Continue to study my grade level pedagogy in order to make my lessons
more efficient and broaden my teaching strategies.
- Attend the Region I Leadership Conference in San Jose in September.
- Continue to be involved with my position of Education Advisor, and help to
incorporate new educational curriculum for the UC Davis and Sacramento
State chapters of Pi Kappa Alpha.
- Offer during school and summer tutoring lessons for the students at the
particular school I am working at.
Year 3 (2017 2018)
- Continue to tweak and implement new lessons, activities and projects where
needed throughout the year.
- Organize and plan at least two grade level field trips relating to various units
that we are studying.
- Look into enrolling to obtain my administrative credential.
- Speak to my principal about the job duties involved with being a principal of
a school, and what challenges he/she faced when becoming a principal.

- Also, ask for any advice as to how I should go about obtaining my


administrative credential, and how to go about becoming a principal.
- Continue to serve on the advisory board of the UC Davis and Sacramento
State chapters of the Pi Kappa Alpha association.
- Continue to tutor students during the school year and over summer when
needed and/or requested.
- Involve myself with organizing a campus club (debate, student government,
fitness club, technology club, etc.), or a campus wide activity (Halloween
party, movie night, sixth grade end of year party, etc.).
Year 4 (2018 2019)
- Continue to tweak and implement new lessons, activities and projects where
needed throughout the year.
- Start looking into potential administration jobs that may be opening up
within the district.
- Begin taking courses for my administrative credential
- Attend the Principals Summer Institute in Los Angeles
- Attend the Institute for New and Aspiring Principals in Los Angeles.
- Organize a school fundraiser to raise money for library books, technology
materials, or art supplies for students to use.
Year 5 (2019 2020)
- Continue to tweak and implement new lessons, activities and projects where
needed throughout the year.
- Continue to look for administrative jobs opening up within the district.
- Look into taking on a student teacher.
- Continue to progress in my administrative credential program.
- Keep inquiring about administration jobs opening up within the district I am
working in.
- Attend a training dealing with having a student teacher in my class.
- Continue to tutor student throughout the year and in summer

At this point in time this is my general five-year plan as I begin my career into teaching.
Throughout my career this plan may change, but right now I see myself taking this path. Since I
have been a substitute teacher for a couple years now, and have completed my student teaching I
have been able to create relationships with both teachers and principals. That being said I do plan
on showing this to a few of them, specifically two principals I am close with, and my master
teachers that I completed my student teaching with. Once I obtain a full time position I will plan
on presenting this development plan to the grade level teachers I will be working with. I will be
sure to point out the conferences that I plan to attend with hopes that they will want to come
along with me.
