I RAN

WONDERS OF PERSIA
DEAR ADVENTURER
I have been traveling to Iran for over 30 years and it is with great pleasure that I will be returning
to lead two Eco-Expeditions in 2011: March 3 – 16 and November 14 – 27. Iran is a country
that offers a remarkable immersion into the world of art, poetry, architecture, and, most notably,
history; extraordinary cuisine; and incredibly warm and welcoming people. This unique combina-
tion of cultural treasures is what keeps me coming back year after year.

Formerly known as Persia, Iran has had a turbulent and colorful history. It has been ruled
by Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, Parthians, Sassanians, and even the British and Russians.
Each conquest left its mark and ensured that the Iran of today’s world is a cultural cache replete
with magnificent ruins of ancient cities, glorious mosques, citadels of breathtaking architecture,
and a long and varied history.

In addition to its myriad historical influences, Iran’s cuisine originated from the Greeks, Arabs,
Turks, and Russians. And while it’s often lumped into “Middle Eastern” fare, Persian gastronomy
is some of the most delicious food in the region. We will savor rustic nan bread, several varieties
of kebabs, and many toothsome soups and stews on our journey.

Meanwhile the Persian people’s warmth and friendliness to visitors, who come to explore Iran’s
mysteries, is incredible. In fact, one of my biggest challenges in Iran is to actually fulfi ll the
itinerary because we get invited into peoples’ homes and to weddings so frequently that we have
to start declining engagements due to time constraints—O felix culpa! I would argue that the
people of Iran are Persia’s greatest treasure.

I have designed an itinerary uniquely varied, and well-suited for the temperate spring and autumn
seasons. In regions known for blue skies, we will visit the desert oasis of Yazd, plus the two valley
gems of Shiraz and Esfahan. In these fascinating cities we concentrate on cultural and architectural
splendors from gardens and mosques to bazaars and traditional houses. We also spend time in
Tehran, visiting the Sa’ad Abad Palace-complex as well as the National Museum of Archaeology
and the National Jewels Museum.

I invite you to join me and discover for yourself the Wonders of Persia, a fascinating, hospitable
country where turbaned clerics and carpet-weaving nomads co-exist in the shadows of the world’s
most elegant mosques and architectural masterpieces.

Warm regards,

Gary Wintz
