The folding motor bike designed for use in dense urban areas where
congestion is a problem. Already heavily used in most Indian cities, scooters and
motorbike provide cheaper, faster transportation than cars, but parking can still be
difficult. By allowing the motorbike to fold - reducing its footprint by more than
half- and by implementing a one-way user share model that does not require
motorbike ownership, many of the current issues involving transportation in dense
urban areas can be addressed.
Analysis of the elements of the motorbike that experience the most stress
are key structural elements in order to make them lighter while maintaining the
strength necessary for long life in a consumer environment.
The foldable motor bike was analyzed under maximum load conditions to
determine the safety factor of two of the frame components that experience the
most stress: the front fork and the main folding pivot axle.
We already have seen manyfoldable motorcycles in the global market but the
mainidea of this project is to provide a foldable motorcyclewhich is light & sleek
yet rigid & safe, easy tohandle and easy to maintain. Unlike theconventional
motorcycles.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
The biggest problem with a road bike is that its large. Taking it on public
transportation is often challenging, if not impossible. And, you cant toss a
couple of these in your trunk like you can a folding bike.
You also have to lock up the bike so that thieves dont target it.

DESIGN CALCULATION
JOINT DESIGN
P = working load (N)
1. SELECTION OF MATERIAL
C10 mild steel
Carbon content = (0.10-0.18%)
Magnesium

= (0.40-0.70%)

Yield strength

= 200 n/mm2

2. SELECTION OF FACTOR OF SAFETY.

The factor of safety (5) is assumed in the present design
3. CALCULATION OF PERMISSIBLE STRESSES.
t = yield strength/FOS
= 200/5
= 40 mpa
c = yield strength / FOS
= 200/5
= 40 mpa

= 0.5*yield strength / FOS

= 0.5*200/ 5
= 20 mpa

CALCULATION OF DIMENSIONS
DIMENSIONS OF PIN
D = ((2*p)/( * ))1/2 = ((2* 1500) / (20* )) 1/2 = 7.0mm
Standard diameter = 15mm

DIMENSION OF b, a
b = 1.25 * d = 1.25 * 15 = 18mm
a = 0.75 * d = 0.75* 15 = 11.25 = 12 mm
DIMENSION OF EYE
D0 = 2*d = 2 * 15 = 30 mm
5. CHECK FOR STRESS IN THE EYE
Tensile
t = p/ b( d0-d )= 1500 / 18(30-15) = 5.55 mpa

t< 20 mpa

Compressive
c = p/ bd = 1500 / 18*15 = 5.55 mpa c < 20 mpa
Shear
= p/ b( d0-d ) = 1500 / 18(30-15)

= 5.55 mpa

< 10 mpa

ADVANTAGES OF FOLDING BIKE

Folding bikes used to be heavy, crude, hard to ride, slow to fold, and once in
a while they collapsed in a heap. But in the early 90s that all changed as rail
operators and airlines began to tighten restrictions on conventional bike carriage.
Fortunately, bikes that could be treated as hand luggage continued to travel free,
and so the concept of a super-compact foldable bike caught on.
Today there are more than 150 folding bikes, and thanks to developments in
small tyre technology and frame materials, the weight, ride quality and
performance of the best is similar to that of their rigid cousins. Foldable bikes
offer five primary advantages over conventional machines:
i.
ii.
iii.

Free and unrestricted carriage on public transport

Relatively thief proof
Space-saving at home and elsewhereurban multi-modal travel (such as

iv.

rail/folding bike) is usually cheaper than using a car
