ABSTRACT
A brief review of recent ichthyological research and compiled results on the records of fishes from the Andaman
and Nicobar Islands are presented in this paper. A total of 1434 species under 576 genera belonging to 33 orders and
165 families is represented from these islands, of which 400 species having commercial significance as food fishes.
Among the fishes, 75.68 per cent of species are recorded as coral inhabitants (1089 species). Besides, 290 speciesfrom
mangroves, 152 species from seagrass meadow, 23 species from freshwater streams and 101 species from offshore
environment, while 258 species were commonly observed as overlap between mangrove, seagrass, coral reefs and
offshore ecosystems. Significantly the number of reef fishes so far reported from Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the
highest among Indian reefs. A zoogeographic analysis reveals a peculiarity of the fauna of this marginal-sea region,
viz., being one of the areas of sympatry of Indian and Pacific Ocean fishes.

INTRODUCTION
Andaman Nicobar islands situated in the Bay of Bengal
between 6o452 -13 452 N and 92o102 - 94o152 E, consist
of 352 islands 220 islets and rock and cover a distance of
almost 800 km over North - South, with a coastline of
1962 km, and bring in for India an Exclusive Economic
Zone (EEZ) of 600 thousand km2. The shelf topography
of these islands show frequent rises supporting coral reefs,
which are characterised as fringing reefs on the eastern
side and barrier reefs off west coast, the depressions are
known as passages and straits. Besides coral reefs, the
shore is composed of rocky and sandy areas and vast
stretches of Mangrove swamps. Owing to the varied
marine habitats, ichthyofauna of these islands is observed
to be one of the most diverse in the world. The fish
diversity in these waters also receives special interest in
terms of marine zoo-geography because of the confluence
of Andaman Sea fishes with Western Pacific and the Indian
Ocean. However, given the extreme fragility of these
ecosystems the biodiversity is under heavy threat. The
diversity, with the developmental pressures faced, may be
under declination.Socio-economically, the fishery industry
here tends a significant portion. However, among others,
sustainable marine fishery is one form of untapped coastal

METHODOLOGY
The compilation of the species list was based largely
on
accumulating
information
from
the
earlierliterature,includinginventory works and faunistic
surveys, field guides, and taxonomic works. Some
unpublished data, including recent unpublished survey
results made by the authors,The systematic arrangement
of families followed by Nelson (2006). Species in each
family are arranged alphabetically. The scientific names
of fishes used in the cited literature have been updated,
following recent usage, and hence junior synonyms were
omitted.
out of which about 15000 (60 per cent) live in the sea;
this represents about half of the entire known vertebrate
fauna. A comprehensive and authoritative account of fishes
of the Indian region was published by Day (1869 a, 1869
b, 1870, 1875-78 and 1888), Jayaram (1999), Menon
(1999) and Munro (1996). The fish fauna of Andaman
and Nicobar Islands are still not thoroughly known and
new species or new records are being discovered every
now and then. Blyth, 1846; Annandale and Hora,1925;
Hora, 1925; Duncker, 1925; Mukerjii, 1935; Herre, 1939,
1940; Koumans, 1940, 1953; Misra, 1950. The detailed
work by Weber and de Beaufort (1913-1936), deBeaufort
(1940) and de Beaufort and Chapman (1951) are notable
for taxonomic anddistributional records of fishes of
Andaman and Nicobar. Herre (1941) made an extensive
study around Andaman Islands and for the first time listed
as many as 490 species of fishes. Subsequently several
new species and new records of fishes have been added
to the list by many ichthyologists like Kalausewitz and
Eild Eibesfeld (1959), Kalausewitz (1963), Jones et al.
(1960), Silas and Dawson (1961), Silas and Toor (1961),
Yazdani (1963) and Luther (1972). During the late twentieth
century ichthyologists like Rangarajan (1969, 1972),
Menon and Rao (1972), Menon and Talwar (1972, 1973),
Sen (1975), Menon and Chatterjee (1974, 1976),
Eschmeyer and Dor (1978), Talwar et al. (1982), Mehta
et al. (1989), Mehta and Devi (1990). Talwar (1990)
prepared a comprehensive list of fishes consisting of 724
species from all the aquatic ecosystems of these islands,
followed by a supplementary list by Devi (1991) containing
71 species of fish. The recent developments in the fish
taxonomy of these Islands are the works by Devi and
