Jr. High Retreat

Please pray for students and leaders that are attending the Junior High Youth Retreat from Monday
through Thursday at the Jersey shore. A GREAT way to start the
summer, and a great introduction to the youth program for new
participants! This year there are 11 participants, 4 Youth leaders
and 45 adult leaders. (Note: Picture is from 2015 trip)

Pastors Corner
As I sit in my office gazing out on a beautiful Thursday afternoon, I am excited about our
second block party this evening, beginning at 6:00 pm. Student Ministry Director, Scott,
laid down a great challenge to each of us this past Sunday to become involved in the
Thursday night block parties and to pray about how God can use us in this experience to
share the Good News of Jesus Christ. I guarantee that you will be able to connect with
folks you do not already know and can hear their story and share a little about your own
as a disciple of Christ. I'm especially excited about the worship experience at 7:30 pm
tonight, because last week we had more than 30 in worship and almost half of them were
new to our church. This is a very informal, lively service, and if you feel called to share your testimony of
faith one Thursday night, please talk to Scott and he'll be glad to have you share.
I'm also excited about our summer film and sermon series, Jesus Goes to Hollywood: Finding God in the
Movies. I've been able to incorporate several of your suggestions for the films we will use. Here's the plan.
My first sermon in this series will be on Sunday, June 26, and will focus on the film, Field of Dreams. We
will show the movie on Father's Day, June 19, so that you have almost an entire week to think and pray
about messages in the film and certain things you'd like me to focus on in my sermon. You can then email
me your ideas during the week as I prepare my message. We want this to be an interactive experience so
that each person can have opportunity for input. When the film is shown, I will share afterward how I intend
to approach my message so that you have an idea of the direction of the sermon. Each of the movies will
be shown on Sunday night beginning at 6:30 pm, and after brief discussion, we will wrap things up by 9:00
pm. Some of the movies will be appropriate for kids of all ages, and some will not.
For your planning purposes, below is the list of films, when they will be shown, and what they are each
rated. Be aware that though we are not showing any R-rated movies, there will still be some vulgarities in
several of these movies. Please remember that the sermon given on each will be one week after the film is
shown. All films will be shown in Oberholtzer Hall except for Field of Dreams, which, because of Vacation

Bible School set-up, will be shown in Fellowship Hall. We welcome any

volunteers who would like to come a little early or stay late to set up and
tear down chairs and equipment.
June 19: Field of Dreams, rated PG
June 26: Lincoln, rated PG-13
July 3, The Pursuit of Happyness, rated PG-13
July 10, Up, rated PG (animated and suitable for all children)
July 17, Secondhand Lions, rated PG
July 24, The Trip to Bountiful, rated PG
July 31, Chariots of Fire, rated PG
Finally, we are pleased to be able to offer expanded giving opportunities
here at ESUMC. You've heard me mention this in general, but now I'll get
specific. Through a special contract, we are now able to offer true online
giving. If you go to our website (www.esumc.net), look for the tab which
says, "Online Giving." When you press it, it brings up a small series of
screens which allow you to give either as a guest or to log in through our
ACS system if you're a member. You have the choice of giving by credit
card, debit card, or through checking or savings accounts. It is quick and
easy, and opens up some new giving possibilities for all of us. Look for
text giving to arrive later in the summer! Please bring your smile and
sense of humor to worship with you this Sunday: it's Holy Humor Sunday!
Come and enjoy the fun which has a serious purpose.

Read the Bible in a Year

I had two colleagues in ministry, Reverend Bob

Mussman and Reverend Dr Tim Duchesne, who loved
to talk about the importance of the Ruach ha-kodesh
(the breath of God and the Holy Spirit). It is this
component of the triune God that helps us along the
path of life when we say yes to Jesus.
No matter what anyone else tells us - God whispers to us again and again,
You are mine; you are my mine; you are the beloved. This is what life looks like
with God. It is spiritual and it is mysterious.
We see this in action when the disciples obey Jesus and return to Jerusalem.
They have no idea what God has planned for them, and this is what makes Acts
Chapter 2 so powerful and intriguing because it is here where things really
started to break loose.
Peter began by reciting a quote from Joel (an Old Testament prophet) who
announced Gods plan: That in the last days I will pour out my Spirit on all
people. Now it is important for us to realize that in Old Testament times the
Spirit of God inhabited prophets, priests and kings, usually for only a determined
period of time. During these New Testament events it had been centuries since
any prophet had the blazing presence of God within them. So this meant that the
people of Israel had held to the prophecies of Joel, Jeremiah and Ezekiel
predicting the return of the Spirit of God; which would herald the age of the
Messiah. Now Peter stood before them saying the time was upon them because
Jesus had changed everything by opening up a new way for each person to live
by faith.
We see the manifestation of Holy Spirit and the results of this transformation
at the end of Chapter 2. And every day they continued to meet together. They
broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to
their number daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:46-47).
So for us as well, the Ruach ha-kodesh is not a place such as a temple or
church where we might go out of faith or religious responsibility. It is the Spirit of
God living in each one of us. This is the good news of the Kingdom of God.
So my friends - be encouraged and read on.
