Report for the 1st AgriMeetUp Day 2016. Sponsored by AVSI Foundation SKY and hosted by Agasha Group Ltd.

1. Introduction
AgriMeetUp Day is a quarterly networking B2B event where key stakeholders in Agribusiness
sector physically meet and greet; get to know each other; and share information, opportunities,
knowledge, advice and challenges. This face-to-face meeting is organized with the aim of
strengthening business linkages initiated via online agricultural and trading platforms. Most of
the participants have virtually met via social media channels, on the emailing group, phone calls
or via the networking website forums. AgriMeetUp Day is also being used as a tool to break the
ice between the upcoming young agripreneurs and experienced agribusiness
practitioners/professionals for possible mentorship linkages, career guidance and employment
opportunities. The ultimate goal is to see more business deals being initiated, followed-up and
closed during AgriMeetUp events.

4. Opening Remarks
The 1st AgriMeetUp Day was opened by Lt. Col.
David Kansiime Karuhanga, the coordinator for
Nakawa division Operation Wealth Creation
(OWC), a Ugandan government initiative
programme whose aim is to at eradicate poverty and
facilitate growth of households income, mainly
through agriculture. He briefly gave the background
of the initiative, the targeted programme
beneficiaries, why it came into existence and its
current activities. After which, he attended to
different questions and contact referral inquiries
from the participants. Some of the questions
included:

What is the difference between OWC, the

new NAADs and former NAADS?
Does OWC also support large scale farmers
and value addition agri-enterprises?
Who is the contact person for OWC in
Kitgum, Kasese, Jinja and Serere?
Is it possible for OWC to support youth agribusiness groups in accessing market and
feeds for fish farming enterprises?
Does OWC offer any agro-input support to the certified organic farmers in Uganda or it
only deals with the conventional farmers?
Is it possible for OWC to distribute seedlings and agro-inputs in time such that farmers
can plant them early for better yields?
Does OWC also tackle challenges faced by livestock producers such as piggery farmers?

After an interactive question and answer session, Lt. Col. David had one-one talks with some of
the participants and he encouraged them to visit his office for further inquiries. He recommended
the participants to visit OWC official facebook page and learn more about its activities:
https://www.facebook.com/Operation-Wealth-Creation-Uganda-265411633666685/.

5. Mini-Exhibition Tour
During the tea-break session, participants visited mini-exhibition where fellow attendants had
show-cased their product samples. Some of the exhibitors reported to have sold their products.
These included:

Sage Uganda: It presented and sold packed chia seeds, displayed its banner and
distributed brochures.
OrganicNews: The participants received a copy of February newspaper on organic
farming where Sage Uganda was featured. OrganicNews is a monthly newspaper
published by NOGAMU.
Ekinu G.Nuts: This consisted of packed groundnuts grinded manually by use of a locally
made mortar (ekinu). The product was presented by a young agripreneur, Balamaze
Frank. He believes that consuming his product will reduce on risks of cancers where the
current groundnuts are grinded by use of machines which wear-off during the processing.
Hamra Agribusiness & Horticultural Company: A youth-led enterprise show-cased
samples of fruit tree seedlings and services offered.
Jakana Foods: Meg displayed the new packaging bags that Jakana Foods is
manufacturing that will increase life shelf of goods such as dried fruits, juice, meat e.t.c.
American Chamber of Commerce Uganda: Brenda gave out flyers and details on the
upcoming event, Generation AgriPreneur Summit & Expo 2016.

6. Forum: Agribusiness Opportunities and Challenges (Fruit Processing)

Sharon Againe, the CEO and Founder of Agasha Group Ltd facilitated a session on fruit
processing opportunities and challenges. Meg from Jakana Foods shared her 22 years-experience
in processing and exporting natural juice and concentrates. She mentioned of the current U.S.A
market opportunity for organically certified juice products. However, Meg pointed out that
though the business is profitable, there are challenges that the processors face in certifying and
training the farmers to produce quality fruits. She encouraged the farmers to do value addition
right from their farms by choosing to apply agrochemicals or to produce organically grown food.

Figure 3: Meg Jaquay, MD for Jakana Foods sharing her experience on fruit processing
Report for the 1st AgriMeetUp Day 2016. Sponsored by AVSI Foundation SKY and hosted by Agasha Group Ltd.

Opportunity: During harvesting seasons, Ugandan farmers grow different varieties of fruits
which can be added value to process juice and concentrates. There is increased demand for the
purely natural juice by the middle class.
Challenges: Most farmers in Uganda do not practice irrigation which makes fruits to be in
abundance during harvest period and very scarce in dry spell. This has an effect on the
processors as they require higher working capital to purchase large quantities of fruits and keep
them in cold storage facilities for the low supply season.
Recommendation: The agriprenuers were advised to
develop their niche product in the industry of fruit
processing and outcompete the imported juices in
Uganda. It was noted that in Uganda there are not
enough fruits to process the highly demanded
concentrate as compared to juice. Additionally, more
feasibility study should be made before investing in the
fruit factory.
Initiatives: Nassali Jorrien, a young agripreneur lady
proactively formed a Whatsapp group on fruit factory
to continue brain storming on the business idea. Meg
also offered to mentor any serious entrepreneur that
would be interested in her 22 year experience of fruit
juice processing in Uganda.
Note: During the forum, it was clarified that Britania had only moved the production factory line
to Kenya but it still exists in Uganda and its fruit juice products will continue to be sold in the
local market

7. Presentation: Youth Employment in Agribusiness

John Rachkara presented Skilling Youth for Employment in Agribusiness (SKY), the new
project implemented by AVSI Foundation that was started in December 2015. SKY is a five year
programme funded by Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Lake Kyoga area,
Elgon area, Lake Victoria and Western Uganda. It aims at enhancing sustainable creation of
youth employment in the agribusiness sector.
John explained that the project came as a result of lack of skills displayed by the graduates after
school due to theoretical education system. An example was for agriculture students who only sit
in a tractor for five minutes to complete the course requirement. After graduation, the person gets
a job where he/she has to drive a tractor or manage the tractor operators. Through SKY, youth
will be provided pre and post-employment support among other focal areas of the programme.
Report for the 1st AgriMeetUp Day 2016. Sponsored by AVSI Foundation SKY and hosted by Agasha Group Ltd.

During the question and answer, participants inquired from John on how their individual
enterprises, organizations and government related initiatives can be involved in implementing
SKY project. John presented different cases where they are working with various partners. He
also provided brochures and business card for continuous communication. For details on SKY,
visit: www.avsi.org or Follow SKY via Twitter @skyAVSIUganda.

8. Advice: How to reduce cases of conmen/fraud on social media

It was noted that most conmen and fraud has increased via Whatsapp and facebook social media.
They brain stormed on different ways to reduce on such cases. Some of the advice included:
Share the details of the offered opportunity with your trusted network before transacting
Listen carefully as you communicate with the person via phone calls
Propose to visit the persons physical office. You can choose to go there or send a
representative or an onsite verification agency. If you are to go, let your close network
know about your meeting place and time
Do due diligence on the previous customers, suppliers or reliable agency for that
enterprise
Avoid receiving cash if you dont have a machine to verify the notes. This can be
counterfeited money. You can choose bank or mobile money transactions.
Follow traditional business practices and sign contracts
Share your success or fraud story strategy with others to save your networks
Report the case to the police immediately after realizing that you are being conned
Some members suggested that a simple system can be set up to hold cash until the produce are
delivered which will safe guard both the buyer and seller. This was drawn from how escrow
operates online (www.escrow.com).

services they are providing or looking for; business partner being sought; and give details on the
upcoming agricultural related events among other offers ( see Table 1).
