watch over the store throughout the day.
Roger Westerling got into the
rare coin and precious metal
business when he was only
17-years-old, alongside his Uncle Truman. Today, he has more
than 40 years of experience in
the field.
All these years have allowed
him to become a knowledgeable source in the trade of gold,
silver and platinum, as well as
expand his business to incorporate other related services.
Many of The Truman Company's customers are regulars,
coming back to Westerling for
all of their evaluations, which
is unusual in the rare coin business. He says it speaks volumes

about his dedication to "doing business the right way and

treating people the right way."
Many of his clients were treated
poorly by other rare coin dealers in the past and now come
to him because they know they
will get an honest deal.
With the unstable stock market, hard assets have become
increasingly desirable to many
people. This has led to more
folks coming to The Truman
Company's office in Roseville to
buy precious metals at affordable prices.
In addition to buying and
selling coins, Westerling and
his employees do free apprais-

client needs them in order to
assess the individual's coins
and precious metal items. The
Truman Company will provide
an itemized list of each piece
and its worth for trade-in, inheritance or insurance replacement
purposes.
The Truman Company also
has a full-time employee running
its eBay business, which brings
in coin aficionados from across
the nation. And if someone
wants to switch their IRA from
dollars to precious metals, The
Truman Company can do that
as well. Employees are happy
to walk customers through every step of the process and help
with the necessary paperwork.
It is this dedication to great
customer service that truly sets
The Truman Company apart
from other coin dealers. All employees are licensed coin dealers by the state of Minnesota,
attesting to their honesty and
knowledge of the business.
Recently, the company acquired a platinum American
Eagle coin. Its low mintage rendered it very rare. The Truman

Company bought it quickly, taking a deal from the U.S. Mint

as they often do. By doing this,
they can pass the coins on to
customers at a low price and
give them the best value possible. Since bullion coins like
this often sell out quickly, it also
allows collectors a unique opportunity to acquire coins they
would not be likely to get otherwise.
This is just another of many
examples of how The Truman
Company goes above and
beyond to help its customers.
With service like that, it is
not hard to see why so many
people go back to Westerling
and his experienced employees time and time again for
all their rare coin and precious
metal needs.
His integrity and "A+" rating from the Better Business
Bureau also make his company a great choice for people
interested in starting a coin
collection or those who have
questions about old coins or
precious metals that they have
inherited.

103rd annual Ramsey County Fair - a longstanding tradition

RAMSEY COUNTY FAIR

Every family has its own traditions.
Traditions for celebrating holidays,
birthdays and special events.
County fairs have been a longstanding
tradition in the community as well. Back
in the days when towns were not very
large, county fairs emerged. It was a time,
after a long season of hard work, for the
towns to gather and celebrate with their
neighbors.
Over time county fairs have evolved,
adapting to the changing communities
and interests. The Ramsey County Fair,
celebrating its 103rd year, has had its
changes, too, but also realizes the value
of traditions and has striven to keep as
many of them as possible for families to
pass along to future generations.
While many county fairs have had
to start charging a fee for admission,
Ramsey County remains one of the few
free-admission fairs, charging only a $3
parking fee (for vehicles parked in the
lot). The Ramsey County Fair has also
striven to keep reasonably priced food
vendors and amusement rides each year,
making it an affordable day for a family
to come and celebrate with their neighbors.

The fairs Farmer for the Day exhibit is a chance for children to learn about
farming traditions.

There is something for everyone at the

fair! Music, entertainment, food, rides,
4H displays, exhibits of food, art and
crafts are all back for 2016, along with
the popular Mitchell Showboat Marionettes. This year the fair begins at 5 p.m.
Wednesday, July 13, and closes at 9:30

p.m. Sunday, July 17. The fairground is

located in Maplewood at the intersection
of White Bear and Frost avenues, near
Aldrich Arena.
You can be part of the fair as well.
Maybe you have a family recipe that you
love to make or a work of art, whether

its something you have sewn, quilted

knitted or painted.
The fair competitions are open to
everyone, and you just might win that
prestigious county fair blue ribbon!
Do you have a special talent? If you do,
then be sure to enter the Ramsey County
Fairs amateur talent contest. Winners
get to move on to the Minnesota State
Fair competition later this summer.
Or maybe you would just enjoy sitting
back and listening to some good music in
the shade, with a lemonade in one hand
and cotton candy in the other. Dont
miss the 4-H Arts-In performances and
the many bands that will be entertaining
the crowds at this years fair.
Kids ever wanted to know what
its like to be a farmer? Check out the
Farmer for the Day exhibit or the
activities presented by the folks from
Gibbs Farm Museum of Pioneer and
Dakotah Life.
Of course, you cant beat the fun at the
carnival and midway!
For more information on any events,
contest or schedules visit the Ramsey
County Fair website at www.ramseycountyfair.org, and see you at the fair!

Brothers and sisters in clowning

Marjorie Otto
Review staff

Any clown will tell you that his or

her favorite part of clowning is trying to make people laugh. But what an
outsider may be surprised by is that
for those who are clowns, clowning is
about more than just making people
smile; its an extension of their personalities.
I probably went through several personas before I found the right one, says
Judy Stitches Reed, current president
of the Powder Puff Clown Club.
Reeds clown name, Stitches, is a moniker her husband helped her pick out
based off her sewing, embroidery and
cross-stitching hobbies.
She says theres more personality
when you choose your name.
Reed has been clowning since 2004
and this is her third year being president
for the 49-year-old club.
Robert Sorteberg, president of the St.
Paul Clown Club, which was established
in 1946 for the St. Paul Winter Carnival,
usually goes by Grandpa Goofy, as he

Parade in North St. Paul along with their infamous motorized bathtub.

spends a lot of time with his 14 grandchildren.

Judy Register, a member of the 3M
Clown Club, goes by the name My

Stars, which is based off a saying her

mother used often when Register was a
child.

Clowning over the years

Its family; I call them my brothers and sisters in clowning, Dorothy
Gifon Fabian says.
Fabian has been in the Powder Puff
Clown Club for 42 years and is the oldest
member at age 84.
I got in it because I went into postpartum depression after my last baby was
born back in the 1960s, Fabian says.
Sorteberg joined the St. Paul Clown
Club in 2000 to help drive the clubs
truck in the parades after the previous
truck driver passed away. He chuckles as
he recalls he had no intentions of becoming a clown or even dressing up.
Sorteberg told the members at the time,
I can do that OK, but I dont think Ill
be a clown.
Finally, one day the members of the St.
Paul Clown Club brought a suit over and
told him he would be a clown. He has
been one ever since.
All three clown clubs say they have
noticed a change in the behavior of kids
over the years.

RAMSEY COUNTY FAIR

Clown...
continued from page 9

Sorteberg says they have to be more cautious now

about approaching children and adults because of their
fears of clowns.
The kids today are just different, Fabian says,
explaining youngsters are no longer interested in the
stickers or trinkets that the clowns used to give away.
She says some parades also ask participants not to
throw candy due to sanitary concerns.
The clubs have experienced a significant drop in
membership over the past 10 years as longtime members age and pass away. At the same time, theyve struggled to find young people interested in becoming clowns
and willing to appear in parades and special events.
Its hard to find people to keep up with that [clowning], Sorteberg says.
Clowns in action
The Powder Puff Clown Club, the 3M Clown Club
and the St. Paul Clown Club make multiple appearances
each parade season. The clubs have made past appearances in the White Bear Avenue parade, the annual
kickoff for the Ramsey County Fair.
Sorteberg says at one point this season the St. Paul
Clown Club participated in eight parades in 10 days.
Reed, president of the Powder Puff Clown Club, says
it takes a couple of hours to put the clown makeup on
and the costumes. Then there is the time spent lining
up for the parades and the actual parades themselves,
all of it adding up to a whole day spent for what seems
like a short event.
Reed says the time commitment is one of the biggest
hurdles for getting younger members to join.
While many clubs require members to be 18 years or
older, the 3M Clown Club includes younger members.
Register says three of her grandchildren, ages 19, 13
and 9, clown with her.
People love the little ones, Register says, adding
that she started some of her grandkids when they were
just 4 years old.
Most of the members join the clubs as a retirement
hobby.
Types of clowns
Reed says that it took over a year and a half before
she found the right clown and costume for her personality.
She explains there are four types of clowns: whiteface, where the face is painted white with color around
the eyes and mouth; Auguste, where the face is painted
with a pink base and there is white and color around
the eyes and mouth; hobo, where the face is painted
with a pink base, there is color around the mouth and
usually a painted on beard; and character, where the
clown chooses a character to dress up as, such as a
pirate or Tinker Bell.
In addition to choosing a type of clown, participants
then can choose a name or multiple names to reflect the
personality of their clown character. They also create
their own costumes.
Cathi Taylor, 67, from West St. Paul and a member of
the Powder Puff Clown Club, says that her three clown

and tranform into their clowning characters.

Interested in clowning around?

If youve ever thought you might be interested in clowning, the local clown clubs encourage you to drop by one of their meetings.
The Powder Puff Clown Club meets at the
Galilee Lutheran Church, 145 N. McCarrons
Blvd., in Roseville on the first Thursday of each
month.
The St. Paul Clown Club also meets at the
Galilee Lutheran Church, but on the second
Thursday of each month.
The 3M Clown Club, is for current and retired
3M employees and their immediate families.
They meet on the second Wednesday of each
month at the 3M Center. The meeting is held in
building 222 and attendees must be escorted to
the meeting at building 224.
characters, Violet, Daisy and Candy, are based off different parts of her personality and her life.
Violet is an absentminded Flower Child, as Taylor
grew up during the 1960s. She notes that Violet does
not portray the drug use during the 1960s, as it would
not be appropriate for children.
Daisy is outgoing and happy, which Taylor describes
as being her personality now but it wasnt my personality as a child. As I grew up and got a little bit older I
started being more of what Daisy is like. Daisy is kind
of my alter ego.
Taylor describes Candy through her outfit, which
consists of red and white striped overalls.
Clowning for the clowns sake
Sorteberg says he keeps clowning in order to have

If you go...
All three clown clubs have made past appearances in the White Bear Avenue parade, the
annual kickoff for the Ramsey County Fair.
The parade will take place July 13, with the
lineup beginning at 6 p.m. and the parade starting at 7 p.m. The parade travels from Ivy Street
north to Aldrich Arena in Maplewood.

something different in life instead of doing the same

thing all the time.
Its meeting people, telling stories, trying to make
people laugh, he says, adding that most of the time,
kids get a bang out of it.
For me it means staying active and helping...by putting a smile on peoples faces, Register says.
But it isnt just about making others happy, theres a
sense of camaraderie between clowns.
Theres a lot of very deep friendships and we do
things other than clowning, like going out to lunch, or
going to events together or the movies or whatever,
Taylor says.
He explains that the Powder Puff Clown Clubs past
president Mark Peterson had a suicide within his family and now many of our clowns participate in [Stomp
Out Suicide charity walk] ... not only for SOS, but for
our love and respect for the Petersons.
Most of the members describe their clowning family
as a support system.
Its more like family; we care very much about each
other, and thats a very nice thing. We are always among
friends Taylor says.
When reflecting on her time in the Powder Puff
Clown Club, Fabian says, Everyone you meet in your
life, they are a special gift.
Sorteberg says, for club members, clowning is something bright in their life, something different.
