Double wishbone suspension:In automobiles, a double wishbone suspension is an

independent suspension design using two wishboneshaped arms to locate the wheel.

DOUBLE WISHBONE SUSPENSION

Each wishbone has two mounting points to the chassis

and one joint at the knuckle. The shock absorber and coil
spring mount to the wishbones to control vertical
movement. It allows the engineer to carefully control the
motion of the wheel throughout suspension travel.

Advantages of double wishbone

it is fairly easy to work out the effect of moving

each joint,so the kinematics of the suspension
can be tuned easily and wheel motion can be
optimized.
Provides increasing negative camber gain all the
way to full jounce travel.
We make kingpin axis more upright by using
this.
It is also easy to work out the loads .
Allows more optimised lightweight parts to be
designed.
Mainly for engineers ,it provides more free
parameters.

Disadvantages of double wishbone

suspensionI.
II.

III.
IV.

It take more space and is slightly more complex

than other systems .
Due to increased number of components within
the suspension setup ,it takes much longer to
service.
It cant provide better ride because it is more
complex and heavier.
It is heavier than an equivalent Macpherson
design.

It is costly and also need high maintenance cost.

It offers less design choice .

Trailing arm suspension:It is typically used on the rear axle of a motor vehicle .it is
used as an independent suspension arrangement . Each
wheel hub is located only by a large ,roughly triangular
arm that pivots at one point ,ahead of the wheel. The arm
is relatively large compare with other suspensions. Seen
from the side, this arm is roughly parallel to the ground,
with the angle changing based on road irregularities.

Trailing arm suspension

Advantages of trailing arm suspension:I. The trailing link design offered all the
improvements in ride quality and road holdings.
Further advantages of its over the swing axle was
the reduced overall size of the suspension
components and reduction in chassis space.
Manufacturing and assembly efficiency due to few
components in this suspension.
Beam axle can be made extremely strong which
useful when supporting large loads.
There is no loss of camber from body roll due to
perpendicular position of wheel on the road.

Disadvantages of trailing arm

suspension:-

I.
II.
III.
IV.
V.

Excess in unsprung weight due to use of large

beam connecting the two front wheels.
Due to use of this ,it has wheel movement which
decreases the stability of the vehicle in corners.
Bending problem arises when the trailing links
are subjected to significant loads. This cause
wheels to vibrate.
When the car rolls on trailing links ,the wheels
lose a significant amount of camber which
reduces the cornering power of vehicle.
Due to high mass of the axle, there is not much
ride isolation between sprung and unsprung
mass.
