Communication: This term we will be using Piazza for all course related questions and class discussion. The
system is highly catered to getting you help fast and efficiently from classmates, the TA, and
myself. Rather than emailing questions directly to the teaching staff, please post your questions
on Piazza. In order to enroll in Piazza, simply click on Piazza under Course Tools in T-square
and follow the prompts to set up your access.

Course Description: All undergraduate students attending Georgia Tech must satisfactorily complete a wellness
requirement, such as this course APPH1040. This course will consist of lectures (including guest lectures), in-class
activities, individual homework assignments, online quizzes and three exams. There is no final exam for this course.
Course Objectives: When you complete this course, you should be able to:
1. Identify the dimensions of health and the scientific basis upon which health guidelines are founded.
2. Evaluate and interpret health information on the internet.
3. Understand the relationship between diet, exercise, and weight management in achieving wellness.
4. Understand your own personality type and identify ways to foster a positive mental attitude in order to
increase happiness and well-being in your life.
5. Understand the value of managing stress in achieving optimal wellness and identify tools to effectively cope
with or eliminate the sources of stress.
6. Illustrate how lifestyle choices and habits formed today may influence your risk for developing a chronic
disease in the future.
7. Assess your own risk for disease, identify modifiable behaviors (and barriers) for change and formulate a
plan to implement scientifically-based recommendations to reduce that risk.
8. Understand the value of a healthy lifestyle, appreciate the application of wellness principles and be able to
use the information from this class to make healthier choices now and throughout life.
Grading:
The course grade is comprised of 3 exams, 3 online quizzes and 3 homework assignments.

Course Guidelines/Expectations/Policies
T-Square (http://t-square.gatech.edu/) will be used for all course postings,
including the course schedule, lecture outlines, grades, additional readings,
extra credit announcements, etc.
Check our course page often for the latest information and/or
announcements.
Pearson Mastering (Textbook Website) for Access to Health, 14th ed. is an
online resource to supplement the course textbook. The link is:
www.mylabandmastering.com. This is where you will take your online
quizzes and have access to all the online resources; including practice exam
questions, learning catalytics, e-text, dynamic study modules, etc
Detailed instructions and criteria for grading will be posted on T-Square.
Assignments must be both handed in hard copy in class on the due date and
submitted via T-Square under the assignments tab as per the instructions
you will receive for each assignment. You will not get a grade if you do not
hand in both the hard copy and submit via T-square under the
assignments tab - NO EXCEPTIONS!
Please note that when submitting your assignments on T-Square, it is your
responsibility to ensure the document(s) upload successfully. Double-check
your assignment submissions.
Please do not email any assignments.
Only the hard copies are graded. Paper copy has to be turned in during class.
The electronic copies are not graded unless the student provides a doctor's
note or Dean's notification. Electronic copies are required in the case of
emergency.
Staple your assignments. Points will be deducted if the assignments are
not stapled.
Do not forget to write your name on the assignment. Do not use nicknames.
Please use the name that you are registered under. If the name you used does
not match the class roster, you will not receive credit for the assignment.
Quizzes will be posted on the Mastering/Pearson Companion website.
Read the instructions before starting the quiz.
Quizzes are timed, so be mindful of how you use your time during quiz
sessions.
Once you submit an answer, you will not be able to go back and review. Each
answer is submitted as you go through.
Always check your internet connection status before you start the quiz
session.
It is your responsibility to have a reliable computer, internet connection and
perform a browser check and any other requirements recommended by the
Pearson Companion website.
Bring a dark (#2) pencil and your BUZZ card to each exam.
Bring a good eraser to completely erase any changed answers.
Exams start on time. If you arrive late, you must still complete the exam
within the class period or portion of the class period set aside for the exam.
No communicating of any type, verbal or nonverbal, is permitted during
exams.
Please use the restroom before the exam begins. If you must use the restroom
during the exam, you are REQUIRED to let a proctor know and surrender your
cell phone to the proctor.
Do not forget to write your name on the answer sheet. Do not use nicknames.
Please use the name that you are registered under.

Extra Credit

Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 4 extra credit


(percentage) points, which will be added to your final grade at the end of
the course. For example, if you have an overall grade of 86%, then 4 points
will be added to 86% (86% + 4% points = 90%), making your final grade
90%.
Information for extra credit opportunities, including detailed instructions
on how to receive credit, will be available on T-Square.
Submit your extra credit assignments as per instructions detailed. You
will have two opportunities to turn in your extra credit assignments. You
must submit your assignments in class!
First due date will be on February 24th and all remaining extra credit
must be submitted on April 11th. Extra credit package could be
submitted on either deadline. After the last deadline, extra credit
assignments will not be accepted.
Extra credit cover page is required. Include your name, ID#, and list of
your submission. No extra credit assignment will be accepted without the
cover page. Staple your extra credit assignments (including the cover
page). No extra credit work will be accepted if the extra credit
assignments are not stapled.
Do not forget to write your name. Do not use nicknames. Please use the name
that you are registered under. If the name you used does not match the class
roster, no credit will be given.
Extra credit options (All extra credit instructions are posted on T-square
under Resources tab):
o Blood Drive (1pt)
o Blood Lipid Test (2pt): This opportunity is not available during the entire
semester. So, pay attention to announcements on T-square and check
Sing-up tab on T-square.
o Fitness Assessment (1pt)
o Guest Speaker Reflection (1pt)
o Physical Activities (1pt): Check instructions on T-square (under extra
credit folder) for determining which activities qualify for extra credits.
(e.g. road race, sports team, sports club, ORGT activities, and fitness
training)
o Sports Science Article Critique (1pt)
o Stress Management (1pt)
o In class extra credit on the last few days of class. See syllabus for details.
Need to be present in class.
o If additional extra credit opportunities are available, they will be
announced and posted on T-square.
o Remember, whether the extra credit is outside of class or in-class, you can
only earn a maximum of 4 percentage points. You are welcome to do
more than 4 points worth of extra credit, but you will not receive any more
than 4 points.

Makeup exams, makeup quizzes and late assignments without penalty are
only allowed in extreme emergencies (e.g. hospitalizations) and require
documentation (Dean of Students Notification).
Make up exams, make up quizzes and late assignments without an
appropriately documented excuse are subject to a 25% penalty per day.

Emergencies

In the event of an emergency, contact both the instructor and the GTA
immediately via email (within 24 hours) and provide documentation of your
emergency (usually Dean of Students Notification).

School-Sponsored Events

ADAPTS/ODS

If you know you will miss a test, quiz or deadline because of your involvement
in a school-sponsored event (e.g. athletic event, workshop, school-related trip,
etc.) contact both the instructor and the GTA at least 5 days in advance to make
necessary arrangements to complete work missed.
You may be asked to complete the work before your absence, but this will
depend on the situation.
This term we will be using Piazza. Please enroll in Piazza and familiarize
yourself with this platform. It is simple to use and will make communication
more efficient with our large group of students.
All you need to do is click on the Piazza link in T-square under Course Tools
and it will take you to our class page.
Please post all your questions on Piazza. The system is highly catered to
getting you help fast and efficiently from classmates, the TA, and myself.
Rather than emailing questions to the teaching staff, post your questions on
Piazza.
We'll be conducting all class-related discussion here this term. The quicker
you begin asking questions on Piazza (rather than via emails), the quicker
you'll benefit from the collective knowledge of your classmates and
instructors. You may even post your questions anonymously.
Georgia Tech offers accommodations to students with disabilities.
If you need a classroom accommodation, please make an
appointment with the ADAPTS office (see
http://www.adapts.gatech.edu).
Students in the ADAPTS program who need special arrangements such as
extra time, please make arrangements with meat least 7 days in advance
of a scheduled quiz or test.
If you plan to take a test in the ADAPTS testing center, you will need to
schedule that at least 4 days in advance.

Cell phone is prohibited in class with the exception of class-related activity


only. Please turn off your phone or silence it before class starts and keep it
in your pocket or backpack.
Personal conversations during class are disruptive to students around you
and often to me. Please refrain from such conversations.
Laptops and tablets may be used in class for APPH1040 class-related activity
only.
Any type of video and/or sound recording REQUIRES the
explicit permission of the instructor/lecturer.
If you arrive late or must leave early, please do so quietly and do not
disturb others. Please do not make a habit of this. .
I reserve the right to DEDUCT UP TO 5 POINTS FROM THE GRADE OF ANY
STUDENT WHO IS DISRUPTIVE AND/OR DISRESPECTFUL to me or to
classmates.

Complete reading assignments (chapter assignments and additional readings)
before class.
Come to class regularly, pay attention, participate and take notes.
Complete your assignments on time and take advantage of opportunities to
earn extra credit.
Study for tests by reviewing the assigned readings (chapters and other
reading assignments) and review lecture notes.
