Speak Truth With Your Neighbor
Speak Truth in Congregation Matters
11. Love for our brothers should move us to do what in the way we use our tongue?
11 By being candid with our brothers but not overly frank, we can express what is on our mind without
being offensive. Indeed, never would we want our tongue to be sharpened like a razor, using it to
inflict painful wounds with abusive or degrading speech. (Ps. 52:2; Prov. 12:18) Love for our brothers
will move us to safeguard [our] tongue against what is bad, and [our] lips against speaking
deception. (Ps. 34:13) In this way, we honor God and promote unity in the congregation.
(Psalm 52:2) Your tongue, as sharp as a razor,
Schemes harm and works deceitfully.

Scriptural Questions Answered:
53:1How is the person who denies Gods existence senseless?
The senselessness here does not denote intellectual deficiency. That such a person is morally
senseless can be seen from the resulting moral breakdown described at Psalm 53:1-4.
(Psalm 53:1) The foolish one says in his heart:
There is no Jehovah.
Their unrighteous actions are corrupt and detestable;

5. What types of attitudes characterize those who are spiritually asleep?

5 Some people imagine that there is no God who will call them to account. (Ps. 53:1) Others imagine
that God is not interested in us humans, so there is no point in our being interested in him. Still others
feel that belonging to a church will make them friends of God. All these people are spiritually asleep.
They need to wake up. How can we help them?
(Psalm 53:1) The foolish one says in his heart:

Do You See Gods Hand in Your Life?
EVIDENCE OF GODS HAND TODAY
10. What evidence do we have that Jehovah is helping people today? (See opening image.)
10 We have ample reason to believe that Jehovah continues to help people. Time and again, we have
heard experiences of how individuals prayed for spiritual help and then received it. (Ps. 53:2) While
preaching from house to house on a small island in the Philippines, Allan met a woman who started to
cry. He states: Just that morning, she prayed to Jehovah that his Witnesses would find her. As a
teenager, she had studied the Bible with the Witnesses but had lost contact with them when she got
married and moved to that island. God answered her prayer so quickly that she was visibly moved.
Within a year, she dedicated her life to Jehovah.
(Psalm 53:2) But God looks down from heaven on the sons of men
To see whether anyone has insight, whether anyone is seeking Jehovah.

Where Can True Comfort Be Found?
Help When Under Extreme Pressure
16. When David was under great pressure, how did he receive help?
16 When King Saul was pursuing David to kill him, David turned to God as his Helper: O God, hear
my prayer, he begged. In the shadow of your wings I take refuge. (Psalm 54:2, 4; 57:1) Did David
receive help? Yes, he did. During that period, Jehovah used Gad the prophet and Abiathar the priest
to convey direction to David, and He used Jonathan the son of Saul to strengthen the young man. (1
Samuel 22:1, 5; 23:9-13, 16-18) Jehovah also allowed the Philistines to make a raid on the land, thus
diverting Saul from his pursuit.1 Samuel 23:27, 28.
(Psalm 54:2) O God, hear my prayer;
Pay attention to the words of my mouth.

LOYALTY TO GOD REQUIRES HUMILITY
9. Why did Abner try to kill David?
9 When David held Goliaths severed head in his hand and spoke with King Saul, at least two men
must have been watching. One was Sauls son Jonathan, who made a covenant of friendship with
David. The other was the army chief Abner. (1 Sam. 17:5718:3) Abner later supported Sauls efforts
to kill David. Ruthless men seek my life, wrote David. (Ps. 54:3; 1 Sam. 26:1-5) Why was Jonathans
reaction to David so different from Abners? Like Jonathan, Abner knew that God had chosen David to
rule as king of Israel. After Sauls death, Abner could have shown humility and proved his loyalty to
God by supporting David, not Sauls son Ish-bosheth. Later, when Abner had relations with King

Honor the Ones Given Authority Over You
Respect Despite Imperfection
9. (a) How did David feel while being mistreated by Saul? (b) How can we tell that Davids
respect for Saul was genuine?
9 Was David distressed while he was being mistreated? There are . . . tyrants that do seek my soul,
David cried out to Jehovah. (Psalm 54:3) He poured out his heart to Jehovah: Deliver me from my
enemies, O my God . . . Strong ones make an attack upon me, for no revolt on my part, nor any sin on
my part, O Jehovah. Though there is no error, they run and get themselves ready. Do rouse yourself
at my calling and see. (Psalm 59:1-4) Have you ever felt the same waythat you had done no wrong
to a person in authority, yet he kept giving you a hard time? David did not fail to show respect to Saul.
Upon Sauls death, instead of exulting in joy, David composed a dirge: Saul and Jonathan, the
lovable ones and the pleasant ones during their life . . . Swifter than the eagles they were, mightier
than the lions they were. You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul. (2 Samuel 1:23, 24) What a fine
example of genuine respect for the anointed of Jehovah, even though David had been wronged by
Saul!

Jehovah Empowers the Tired One
Spiritual Provisions to Invigorate Us
11. Why should we attach great importance to regular prayer?
11 Regular prayer to God helps to invigorate us. May we therefore persevere in prayer. (Romans
12:12) At times, we need to make a specific request for the wisdom and strength needed to cope with
a trial. (James 1:5-8) Let us also thank and praise God when we observe the outworking of his
purposes or see that he has strengthened us to carry on in his service. (Philippians 4:6, 7) If we
remain close to Jehovah in prayer, he will never abandon us. Look! sang David, God is my
helper.Psalm 54:4.

Do You Grasp the Meaning?
THE SOWER WHO SLEEPS
6. What should we acknowledge with regard to spiritual growth?
6 What can we learn from this illustration? First of all, we have to admit that we have no control over
the spiritual growth of a Bible student. Modesty on our part will help us to avoid the temptation to
pressure or force a student to get baptized. We do all we can to assist and support the person, but we
humbly admit that ultimately the decision to make a dedication belongs to that person. Dedication is
something that must spring from a willing heart motivated by love for God. Anything less would not be
acceptable to Jehovah.Ps. 51:12; 54:6; 110:3.
(Psalm 54:6) I will sacrifice to you willingly.

Will You Make Sacrifices for the Kingdom?
Will You Make Sacrifices for the Kingdom?
3. (a) How do we benefit when we make sacrifices for the Kingdom? (b) What questions should
we consider?
3 The need for active support of the Kingdom has never been greater. It is a joy to see that many are
willingly making sacrifices for Jehovah. (Read Psalm 54:6.) Such a generous spirit brings us much joy
as we await the coming of Gods Kingdom. (Deut. 16:15; Acts 20:35) All of us, though, should examine
ourselves closely. Are there ways in which we can make additional sacrifices for the Kingdom? How
are we using our time, money, energy, and abilities? What cautions must we consider? Let us review
a pattern that we can imitate for making such voluntary sacrifices, thus increasing our joy.
(Psalm 54:6) I will sacrifice to you willingly.
I will praise your name, O Jehovah, for it is good.

Jehovah Hears Our Cries for Help
Rely on Jehovahs Help
8. How can we avail ourselves of Gods help?
8 How can we avail ourselves of that help? Notice what we are counseled to do: Throw all your
anxiety upon him. This means that we figuratively hand over to Jehovah the responsibility for all our
cares and concerns. We try to stop worrying and patiently trust in him to care for our needs. (Matt.
6:25-32) Such trust requires humility, not relying on our own strength or wisdom. By humbling
ourselves under the mighty hand of God, we acknowledge our lowly position. (Read 1 Peter 5:6.) In
turn, this helps us to cope with whatever God permits. We may yearn for immediate relief, but we trust
that Jehovah knows precisely when and how to act in our behalf.Ps. 54:7; Isa. 41:10.
(Psalm 54:7) For he saves me from every distress,
And I will look in triumph on my enemies.

Who Will Be Resurrected?
Are There Unrighteous Ones in Sheol?
12. Who was Ahithophel, and where did he go at his death?
12 Ahithophel was personal adviser to David. His counsel was valued as though it was from Jehovah
himself. (2 Samuel 16:23) Sadly, this trusted servant turned traitor and joined in a coup led by Davids
son Absalom. Apparently, David alluded to this defection when he wrote: It was not an enemy that
proceeded to reproach me; otherwise I could put up with it. It was not an intense hater of me that
assumed great airs against me; otherwise I could conceal myself from him. David continued:
Desolations be upon them! Let them go down into Sheol alive; for during their alien residence bad
things have been within them. (Psalm 55:12-15) At their death, Ahithophel and his companions went
to Sheol.
(Psalm 55:12-15) For it is not an enemy who taunts me;

He Will Draw Close to You
Access to the Hearer of Prayer
16. Why can we be confident that Jehovah really listens to our prayers?
16 Does Jehovah really listen to our prayers? If he were indifferent or unconcerned, he would never
urge us to persevere in prayer or to throw our burdens and anxieties on him. (Romans 12:12; Psalm
55:22; 1 Peter 5:7) Faithful servants in Bible times had complete confidence that Jehovah listens to
prayer. (1 John 5:14) Thus, the psalmist David stated: [Jehovah] hears my voice. (Psalm 55:17) We
too have every reason to be confident that Jehovah is close, ready to hear our every thought and care.

How will she pay her bills? A Christian sister named Pamela wants to move where the need for
Kingdom proclaimers is greater, but should she? A young man named Samuel has a concern of
another sort. He was exposed to pornography at an early age. Now in his 20s, Samuel has a strong
temptation to go back to that habit. How can he resist the pull?
2 Whom do you lean upon when facing distressing situations, making important decisions, or resisting
temptations? Do you rely solely on yourself, or do you throw your burden upon Jehovah? (Ps. 55:22)
The eyes of Jehovah are toward the righteous ones, states the Bible, and his ears are toward their
cry for help. (Ps. 34:15) How important it is, then, that we trust in Jehovah with all our heart and that
we do not lean upon our own understanding!Prov. 3:5.

Why Should We Pray Incessantly?
Pray IncessantlyWhy?
11. How can prayer help us to deal with problems?
11 Prayer can also help us to handle problems. Is our lot in life burdensome and the circumstances we
face harsh? The Bible tells us: Throw your burden upon Jehovah himself, and he himself will sustain
you. Never will he allow the righteous one to totter. (Psalm 55:22) When faced with difficult decisions,
we can imitate Jesus example. He spent a whole night in private prayer before appointing his 12
apostles. (Luke 6:12-16) And on the night before he died, Jesus prayed so intensely that his sweat
became as drops of blood falling to the ground. (Luke 22:44) The result? He was favorably heard for
his godly fear. (Hebrews 5:7) Our fervent and incessant prayers will help us to cope with stressful
situations and difficult trials.

9 Recall Davids words recorded at Psalm 55:22: Throw your burden upon Jehovah himself, and he

the conspiracy. David had to flee Jerusalem for his life. (2 Sam. 15:12-14) Even under those
distressing circumstances, David continued to trust in God, and he was not disappointed.

How Can the Peace of the Christ Control in Our Hearts?
When We Are Beset by Anxiety
10. What are two ways in which a Christian can seek to relieve anxiety?
10 Seeking comfort in Gods Word is one way. King David wrote: When my disquieting thoughts
became many inside of me, your own consolations began to fondle my soul. (Psalm 94:19) Jehovahs
consolations can be found in the Bible. Regularly consulting that inspired Book will help to preserve
the peace of the Christ in our hearts. The Bible states: Throw your burden upon Jehovah himself, and
he himself will sustain you. Never will he allow the righteous one to totter. (Psalm 55:22) In a similar
vein, Paul wrote: Do not be anxious over anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication along
with thanksgiving let your petitions be made known to God; and the peace of God that excels all
thought will guard your hearts and your mental powers by means of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6, 7)

14 King Davids conviction that Jehovah cared for him and felt for him is made evident in Psalm 56,
which David composed while running from murderous King Saul. David escaped to Gath, but he
feared capture when he was recognized by the Philistines. He wrote: My foes have kept snapping all

David turned to Jehovah. All day long they keep hurting my personal affairs, he said. All their

Maintain a Threefold Cord in Marriage
When Difficulties Arise
17, 18. When troubles mount, where can we turn for help?
17 Tests may come when circumstances in life change. A couple may face challenges when they
have children. A mate or a child may become seriously ill. Aging parents may need special care.
Grown children may move far away from home. Other changes may result from caring for theocratic
privileges and responsibilities. All these changes can bring some stress and anxiety to a relationship.
18 If the strain on your marriage makes you feel that you have reached the breaking point, what can
you do? (Prov. 24:10) Do not give up! Satan would like nothing better than for one of Gods servants
to abandon pure worship. He would be even happier if a couple did so. Hence, do all you can to make
sure that your marriage remains a threefold cord. The Bible contains many accounts of ones who
remained faithful despite severe trials. For example, on one occasion, David poured out his heart to
Jehovah, saying: Show me favor, O God, because mortal man . . . keeps oppressing me. (Ps. 56:1)
Have you ever felt oppressed by mortal man? Whether the stress that you feel is coming from a
distance or from someone close to you, remember: David found the strength to endure, and so can
you. I inquired of Jehovah, and he answered me, said David. Out of all my frights he delivered

10 On one occasion, David sought refuge with Achish, king of the Philistine city of Gath, the home of

did David react in that dangerous situation? He poured out his heart in prayer to Jehovah. (Psalm
56:1-4, 11-13) Although he had to feign insanity to get away, David knew that it was really Jehovah
who had delivered him by blessing his efforts. Davids wholehearted reliance on Jehovah and
confidence in him showed that David was truly God-fearing.Psalm 34:4-6, 9-11.

8. How did Jehovahs Witnesses respond to the extreme pressures brought on during the
second world war?
8 When the wheat class once again became evident, Satan waged bitter warfare against it.
(Revelation 12:17) How did he react when the great crowd began to appear? With extreme violence!
Can we doubt that he was behind the worldwide attack on true worship that occurred during the
second world war? On both sides of the conflict, Christians came under great pressure. Many dear
brothers and sisters suffered terrible trials, some dying for their faith. Still, they echoed the words of
the psalmist: In union with God I shall praise his word. In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me? (Psalm 56:4; Matthew 10:28) Anointed Christians and other sheep,
strengthened by Jehovahs spirit, stood firm together. (2 Corinthians 4:7) As a result, the word of God
went on growing. (Acts 6:7) In 1939, when war broke out, 72,475 faithful Christians reported sharing
in the preaching work. However, the incomplete report for 1945, the year the war ended, revealed that
156,299 active Witnesses were spreading the good news. What a defeat for Satan!

Meditate on Jehovahs Enduring Love
RESPOND TO JEHOVAHS LOVE
17, 18. What are some ways that we can show our love for God?
17 There are many ways to express our love for Jehovah. For example, we show love for God and
neighbor by having a zealous share in the Kingdom-preaching work. (Matt. 24:14; 28:19, 20) We show
that we truly love Jehovah by enduring tests of faith as integrity keepers. (Read Psalm 84:11; James
1:2-5.) If our trials become severe, we can be sure that God is aware of our suffering and will help us,
for we are precious to him.Ps. 56:8.
18 Our love for Jehovah moves us to meditate on his creative works and other marvelous deeds. We
show that we love God and highly value his Word by diligently studying the Bible. Love for Jehovah
draws us ever closer to him in prayer. And our love for God grows deeper as we reflect on the ransom
sacrifice he provided for our sins. (1 John 2:1, 2) These are just some of the many reasons we have
for loving Jehovah in response to his enduring love for us.

Let Us Exalt Jehovahs Name Together
Another Escape From Death
8. (a) What does Psalm 56 tell us about Davids experience in Gath? (b) How did David have a
narrow escape from death?
8 The Philistines then laid hold of David. It may have been at this time that David composed the
heartfelt psalm in which he appealed to Jehovah: Do put my tears in your skin bottle. (Psalm 56:8
and superscription) He thus expressed his confidence that Jehovah would not forget his grief but
would lovingly care for him and protect him. David also thought out a strategy for deceiving the
Philistine king. He acted as if he were insane. Seeing this, King Achish rebuked his servants for
bringing a crazy man before him. Clearly, Jehovah blessed Davids strategy. David was driven from
the city, having experienced another narrow escape from death.1 Samuel 21:13-15.

If God Is for Us, Who Will Be Against Us?
Time to Evaluate the Facts
18, 19. (a) Why is there no reason for Jehovahs Witnesses to desist from doing their preaching
work, even though they are opposed? (b) How does Psalm 41:11 support the fact that the
Witnesses have Gods backing?
18 Jehovahs Witnesses will continue to carry out this commission, never allowing persecution or
opposition to impede their activity. Jehovahs work must and will be done. Every attempt others have
made during the past century to hinder the Witnesses from accomplishing Gods work has ended in
ultimate failure, for Jehovah promised: Any weapon whatever that will be formed against you will have
no success, and any tongue at all that will rise up against you in the judgment you will condemn. This
is the hereditary possession of the servants of Jehovah, and their righteousness is from me.Isaiah
54:17.
19 That Jehovahs Witnesses are stronger and more active now than ever beforeand this in the face
of worldwide oppositionis proof that Jehovah finds pleasure in what they are doing. King David said:
By this I do know that you have found delight in me, because my enemy does not shout in triumph
over me. (Psalm 41:11; 56:9, 11) Never will Gods enemies be able to shout in triumph over
Jehovahs people, for their Leader, Jesus Christ, is moving ahead to final victory!
(Psalm 56:9) My enemies will retreat on the day that I call for help.
Of this I am confident: God is on my side.

Those Taking the Lead Are Imperfect
8, 9. How did some of Davids contemporaries act, and how did David react to such behavior?
8 Of course, those appointed to take the lead in true worship are imperfect. All of them make
mistakes, and some have persistent weaknesses that they are working hard to control. Need we be
upset because of this? No. Even individuals entrusted with much responsibility in ancient Israel made
grave errors. While David was still a young person, for instance, he was called upon to serve as
musician to calm troubled King Saul. Later, Saul tried to kill David, who ultimately had to flee for his
life.1 Samuel 16:14-23; 18:10-12; 19:18; 20:32, 33; 22:1-5.
9 Other Israelites behaved treacherously. For instance, Davids military commander Joab murdered

Sauls relative Abner. Absalom conspired against his father, David, for the kingship. And Davids
trusted adviser Ahithophel betrayed him. (2 Samuel 3:22-30; 15:1-17, 31; 16:15, 21) Yet, David did not
become a bitter complainer; nor did he turn his back on true worship. In fact, the opposite was true.
Adversity moved David to cling to Jehovah and maintain the fine attitude he had when he ran away
because of Saul. At that time, David sang: Show me favor, O God, show me favor, for in you my soul
has taken refuge; and in the shadow of your wings I take refuge until the adversities pass over.

18. In what way did David set a fine example for Christians?
18 Throughout his life, David sought Jehovahs approval. In song, he cried out: Show me favor, O
God, show me favor, for in you my soul has taken refuge. (Psalm 57:1) His trust in Jehovah was not
in vain. David grew old, satisfied with days. (1 Chronicles 23:1) Though David made serious
mistakes, he is remembered as one of many witnesses of God who displayed outstanding faith.

Your Reminders Are What I Am Fond Of
Loyalty to Gods Arrangements
7. In imitation of David, how should we react if we experience injustice or prejudice?
7 Or you might be facing problems of social injustice or religious prejudice. Possibly there is little or
nothing you can do about them at this time. Such a situation can be very difficult to endure, but
Davids reaction to injustice teaches us a lesson. The psalms David wrote are a poignant record not
only of his heartfelt prayers for God to keep him out of Sauls clutches but also of his loyalty to
Jehovah and his concern for the glorification of Gods name. (Psalm 18:1-6, 25-27, 30-32, 48-50;
57:1-11) David remained loyal to Jehovah even though Saul continued to act in an unjust way for
years. We too should remain faithful to Jehovah and to his organization regardless of injustices we
suffer and regardless of what others do. We can rest assured that Jehovah is fully aware of the
situation.Psalm 86:2.

Preserve the Positive Spirit of the Congregation
ENCOURAGE A POSITIVE SPIRIT
3, 4. How can we laud [Jehovah] in the big congregation?
3 The psalmist sang: I will laud you [Jehovah] in the big congregation; among a numerous people I
shall praise you. (Ps. 35:18) The psalmist did not hold back from praising Jehovah when he was with
other servants of God. Weekly congregation meetings, including the Watchtower Study, present fine
opportunities for us to display a zealous spirit when we comment and make expressions of faith. All of
us may well ask ourselves: Am I taking full advantage of the privilege to participate in meetings? Do I
prepare well for them and make meaningful comments? As a family head, do I help my children to
prepare comments in advance and teach them to answer in their own words?
4 The psalmist David associated the steadfastness of our heart with our singing. My heart is
steadfast, O God, he said, my heart is steadfast. I will sing and make melody. (Ps. 57:7) The songs
used at Christian meetings provide us a fine opportunity to sing and make melody to Jehovah with a
steadfast heart. If we are not familiar with some of the songs, why not practice singing them during
Family Worship evening? May we be determined to sing to Jehovah throughout our life and make
melody to him as long as we are.Ps. 104:33.

Keep On Serving With a Steadfast Heart

21 Your determination to live up to your dedication to God may well be strengthened if you keep in
mind the happy day of your baptism and seek Gods help so that your words and deeds will make his
heart rejoice. (Proverbs 27:11) Jehovah never fails his people, and surely we should be faithful to him.
(Psalm 94:14) He showed mercy and pity in thwarting the enemies plans and delivering David.

deep feeling, he sang: My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast. I will sing and make

22 Like David, true Christians have not budged from their devotion to God. With steadfast hearts, they
ascribe their deliverance and preservation to Jehovah, to whom they joyfully sing praises. If your heart
is steadfast, it will be reliant upon God, and with his help you will be able to fulfill your dedication. Yes,
you can be like the righteous one concerning whom the psalmist sang: He will not be afraid even of
bad news. His heart is steadfast, made reliant upon Jehovah. (Psalm 112:6, 7) With faith in God and
full reliance upon him, you can live up to your dedication and keep on serving Jehovah with a
steadfast heart.

Enrich Your Prayers Through Bible Study
Remember Praise and Thanksgiving
18, 19. For what reasons should a servant of Jehovah praise and thank him?
18 In prayer, remember to praise and thank Jehovah. There are so many reasons to do so! For
example, David was eager to extol Jehovahs kingship. (Read Psalm 145:10-13.) Do your prayers
show that you appreciate the privilege of announcing Jehovahs Kingdom? Words of the psalmists
may also help you to express to God in heartfelt prayer your gratitude for Christian meetings,
assemblies, and conventions.Ps. 27:4; 122:1.
19 Gratitude for your precious relationship with God may move you to pray from the heart with
thoughts like these: I shall laud you among the peoples, O Jehovah; I shall make melody to you
among the national groups. For your loving-kindness is great up to the heavens, and your trueness up
to the skies. Do be exalted above the heavens, O God; let your glory be above all the earth. (Ps.
57:9-11) What heartwarming sentiments! Do you not agree that such touching words from the Psalms
can affect and enrich your prayers?
(Psalm 57:9-11) I will praise you among the peoples, O Jehovah;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your loyal love is great, as high as the heavens,
And your faithfulness, up to the skies.
11 Be exalted above the heavens, O God;
May your glory be over all the earth.

The lies they tell about others are like a serpents venom. They poison the good reputation of their
victims. Like the cobra that stops up its ear, the wicked do not listen to direction or correction.

TOWARD GOD WAIT SILENTLY, O MY SOUL
Scriptural Questions Answered:
58:7How do the wicked dissolve as into waters that go their way?
David may have been thinking of the waters of certain torrent valleys in the Promised Land. While a
flash flood would swell water levels in such a valley, these waters quickly run off and disappear. David
was praying for the speedy disappearance of the wicked.
(Psalm 58:7) May they disappear like waters that drain away.
May He bend his bow and make them fall by his arrows.

Jehovah Hears Our Cries for Help
Rely on Jehovahs Help
13. In addition to praying, what else must we do?
13 Is it enough, then, for us just to take our problems to Jehovah in prayer? No. More is required. We
need to act in harmony with our prayers. When King Saul sent men to Davids home to put him to
death, David prayed: Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; from those rising up against me may
you protect me. Deliver me from the practicers of what is hurtful, and from bloodguilty men save me.
(Ps. 59:1, 2) In addition to praying, David listened to his wife and took the necessary action to escape.
(1 Sam. 19:11, 12) In a similar way, we can pray for practical wisdom to help us deal with and perhaps
improve our distressing circumstances.Jas. 1:5.
(Psalm 59:1,2) Rescue me from my enemies, O my God;
Protect me from those rising up against me.
2 Rescue me from those who act wickedly,
And save me from violent men.

The Decree of Jehovah Cannot Fail
Jehovah Holds Them in Derision
9, 10. Why does Jehovah hold the nations in derision?
9 Jehovah is not concerned about any efforts of national rulers to establish their own sovereignty. The
second psalm continues: The very One sitting in the heavens will laugh; Jehovah himself will hold
them in derision. (Psalm 2:4) God goes ahead with his purpose as though these rulers are nothing.
He laughs at their impudence and holds them in derision. Let them boast about what they intend to do.
To Jehovah they are a laughingstock. He laughs at their futile opposition.
10 Elsewhere in his psalms, David refers to enemy men and nations and sings: You, O Jehovah God
of armies, are the God of Israel. Do wake up to turn your attention to all the nations. Do not show favor
to any hurtful traitors. They keep returning at evening time; they keep barking like a dog and go all
around the city. Look! They make a bubbling forth with their mouth; swords are on their lips, for who is
listening? But you yourself, O Jehovah, will laugh at them; you will hold all the nations in derision.
(Psalm 59:5-8) Jehovah laughs at the boasting and confusion of the nations in their foolish course
against him.
(Psalm 59:5-8) For you, O Jehovah God of armies, are the God of Israel.
Awake to turn your attention to all the nations.
Do not show mercy to any malicious traitors. (Selah)

Christians Find Happiness in Serving
Sacred Service That Is Unacceptable
19. (a) How do we view our sacred service? (b) What kind of sacred service will bring us joy?
19 Jesus said: It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render
sacred service. (Matthew 4:10) He was speaking to Satan, but how vital it is that all of us heed his
words! Rendering sacred service to the Sovereign Lord of the universe is an elevated, fear-inspiring
privilege. And what can be said about performing public service that is linked to our worship? Doing
this in behalf of our fellowman is a joyful work that brings great happiness. (Psalm 41:1, 2; 59:16) Still,
such service brings real happiness only if it is offered wholeheartedly and in the right way. Who are
really worshiping God properly? Whose sacred service does Jehovah accept? We can answer such
questions if we consider the third Bible word that has to do with our worship. This we will do in the
following article.
(Psalm 59:16) But as for me, I will sing about your strength;
In the morning I will joyfully tell about your loyal love.
For you are my secure refuge
