A PROPOSED MEDICAL AND PALLIATIVE CARE COMMUNITY FOR FILIPINO

CANCER PATIENTS
A Study on Rethinking the Typologies in the Palliative Care and Retaining the Filipinos Cultural
Identity in the Medical Setting
In Davao City, cancer is one of the leading causes of deathsonly below respiratory
illnesses and hypertension. In Davao City, there are limited palliative care centers found and
most of them can be found in hospitals like Davao Doctors Hospital. . A major problem in the
medical setting with regards to terminal sickness is that the environment and atmosphere plays
a huge role in the mental and physical well being of patients.
Typology by definition is the taxonomic classification commonly found in structures and
the urban setting. A major problem in Davao Citys Care is that most care centers can be found
within hospitals creating an atmosphere of sickness and depression. A new design is needed to
address this by creating a space where patients can remove the stress of treatment through
home based design elements

and removing the medical atmosphere within the community .

The update of current cancer related design will be researched including new applications of
daylighting typology, the importance of furniture design as well as sound and water in the
healing of cancer patients. Cancer is known to have four stages and each stage should be
addressed with a different design approach by understanding the psychology of patients. The
application of different design approach depending on which stage of cancer the patient is
experiencing can help create a comfort zone for every cancer patients.
Another major factor to research in helping the recovery of patients is retaining the Filipino
cultural identity through the different elements found within the Filipino architecture and the
cultural background of the Filipino patients. Creating a sense of place where the patients can
remove the feeling of dread of hospitals through cultural space design.
The study aims to prove that the liveable elements of the city can be applied in the
palliative context. The application of parks can help create a space of interaction between the
patients, their family and the external members of the community. The application of Seminar
Workspace can help teach people on how to live healthy. The study aims to improve the
wellbeing of Filipino cancer patients by understanding the different elements found within the
Filipino culture as well as its architecture.
