1.0 INTRODUCTION
Obesity can be defined as a condition of someone being very fat, where the weight
exceeds 120% of the median weight for height that means is overweight (Scawen, 2014).
Malaysias health minister has given warning that the country is in the midst of an obesity
epidemic, which almost people in the country is overweight or obese. Based on the survey from
National Health and Morbidity found that about 30 per cent of Malaysian adults above the age of

Fighting Obesity Program (FiObes) 2016

18 were overweight, while about 18 per cent of the people or more than five million people can
be classed as obese (Scawen, 2014). With the advent of technological advances, Malaysians lead
a largely sedentary lifestyle and consequently higher rates of obesity (Ministry of Health, 2015).
Fight Obesity is one of the program that was organized by Science Education and
Society from Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Puncak Alam Campus with the
aim to help university students especially students from Puncak Alam Campus. This program is
focusing on aspects of changing students sedentary lifestyle and gives an understanding about
how eating habits and lifestyle become one of the main factors toward obesity. Thus, this
program will help students to have awareness about obesity and have a healthy lifestyle.
Besides, our program also has collaboration with Ministry of Health to provide free
inspections and exhibition about obesity. Means that every student can determine whether their
level of obesity by doing a blood test and calculating a BMI.
So, we hope students have an awareness about an obesity and inspire them to change the
correct lifestyle and healthy.

2.0 RATIONAL
Our target group for this program is for university students from Puncak Alam Campus.
Obesity and overweight have significant implications for health, social care and the economy.
Being obese or overweight increases the risk of developing a range of serious diseases, including
heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Thus, we conduct the program that helpful for students in
term of their nutrition and their lifestyle that will become toward obesity. From the need analysis

Fighting Obesity Program (FiObes) 2016

that we carried on, we noticed that most of student do not practice on healthy lifestyle in term of
their eating habits and lifestyle. In our Fighting Obesity program, we also have a collaboration
with PHYSED association to conduct some physical activity such as exercises to encourage
them to do an exercises and practice on healthy lifestyle.
Moreover, we also invite nutritionist and artist to give a talk about obesity and sharing
some tips about the correct diets. Thus, participants will have more understanding on how to
prevent of obesity, impact of obesity and the good healthy lifestyle. Essentially, we invite Aizat
Amdan a singer form Akademi Fantasia to share with audience about his experience in
managing to lose 30 kg from a previous 112 kg. Therefore, it will inspire and encourages
students or participants from Aizat experience to practice on healthy lifestyle.
As a conclusion, we believe that this program will help students or participants getting a
lot of knowledge and encourages them to practice on healthy lifestyle.

3.0 THE CURRICULUM

3.1 Need analysis
Before this proposal was sent, the need analysis is constructed in order to determine the
need to design this course. We need to analyze the actual problem faced by UiTM students
regarding the obesity problem. It is important to determine what they do not know to give them
useful knowledge as long they joined the program. The information obtained from the
4

Fighting Obesity Program (FiObes) 2016

questionnaires also important to arrange the content in the program and to ensure that the content
give benefits to all students.
We decided to conduct the need analysis by distributing the questionnaires among 50
respondents in UiTM. The respondents are selected randomly which are 25 male and 25 female
and we distributed the questionnaires at UiTM PTAR library. The questionnaires were divided
into three parts which are demographic question in part 1, respondent knowledge regarding the
obesity in part 2 and also the respondent lifestyle in part 3. The total numbers of question are 12
questions and divided equally in part 2 and 3. In demographic questions, the respondent only
needs to fill their age, weight and height and also need to write their faculty. In part 2,
respondents need to choose whether they agree or disagree with the statement and in part 3, the
respondents need to choose between always, often, sometimes, rarely, and never.

5.0 CONCLUSION
32

Fighting Obesity Program (FiObes) 2016

As a conclusion, we believe that the program of Fight Obesity can gives many benefits to
the student in the future as it closely related to their health. The knowledge of obesity that was
obtained by talk session may help the student to prevent the lifestyle which leads to the obesity.
It will help to educate the UiTM students regarding the knowledge on the factor that cause
obesity and the effective way to prevent it. Through the slot X-tra Ordinary Exercise, students
learnt the various kind of movement which can be good exercises in order to have healthy body.
Hence, they learn that light exercise will help to burn more calories so they can maintain their
fitness and wellness. Next, by visiting the exhibition that was organized, students have a chance
to get the experiences with the real healthy products and foods. In the talk sessions, students gain
valuable knowledge which related to the obesity. It may help to educate students to calculate the
Body Mass Index (BMI) based on their height and weight and the relation with obesity.
