gases by ?aring.
Large quantities of unwanted ?ammable gas can be
burnt quickly at ?ares of open pipe type. The gas may
be supplied to such a ?are at high pressure and released
velocity, is that the ?ame can lift off the tip of the ?are,
the tip of the ?are. Whilst lift off is not in itself a prob
lem, indeed, a lifted ?ame bene?ts from improved aera
tion, there is the possibility that the ?ame may be unsta
ble and lift off to the extent that the ?ame is blown out,
which leads to the dangerous accumulation of unburnt
?ammable gas. Flares may be ?tted with pilot burners
the tip.

EMBODIMENTS
In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 3 all the low pres
sure gas is derived from the high pressure gas supply.
Referring ?rstly to FIG. 1, there is shown an open pipe
?are 10. Upstream of the tip of the ?are 10, there is a
passage 11 by which a proportion of the main ?ow of
gas to the tip of ?are 10 is supplied to a manifold 12 by
embodiment.
The sixth embodiment shown in FIG. 6 comprises a
?are stack pipe 60 and two manifolds for low pressure
gas arranged in the vicinity of the ?are tip 61. The ?rst
