MCC is this community’s college. Since its inception, a quarter million

citizens have attended this excellent institution. Last night we celebrated
the academic accomplishments of our 2500 graduates. In stark contrast to
these celebratory events, May 29, 2008 was also the day 557 Monroe
Community College employees participated in a vote of no confidence in the
9 appointed members of our Board of Trustees. Ninety-nine percent of all
ballots cast, 546 employees, supported the motion.

Based on the actions of the Monroe Community College Board of Trustees on
Saturday, May 17, the students, faculty and staff of Monroe Community
College no longer have confidence in the commitment of the Monroe
Community College’s Board of Trustees to carry out a politically non-partisan
and effective presidential search process that meets the high standards
established by SUNY guidelines.

Earlier in the week, the leadership of MCC’s Student Government, voted with
no opposition to support the same motion. Like our community, MCC’s
employees and students represent the broad political spectrum. The voting
was in no way, a politically partisan one.

As much as we respect President Spina’s past accomplishments at MCC, the

appointment of any interim president is not a step forward. We need a
president NOW, not an interim! The current search has identified two highly
qualified candidates in Mr. Dennis Kessler and Dr. Laurence Spraggs. The
failure of the Board of Trustees to recommend one of these as MCC’s fifth
president during its special meeting on May 17th is a profound act of
disrespect to students, staff and faculty, as well as to the members of the
two parallel search committees. Barring the Board’s reconsideration and
recommendation to the SUNY Chancellor of either of these two candidates,
we are asking the nine appointed members of MCC’s Board of Trustees to
submit their resignations effective August 31, 2008.

Unless the Board of Trustee’s reconsiders and recommends to the SUNY

Chancellor either Mr. Kessler or Dr. Spraggs, we are asking the Monroe
County Republican and Democratic legislators to evaluate and select, in a
nonpartisan way, board members to complete the remaining terms of the
five county appointments to the Board. These appointments must be
individuals committed to leaving their political hats outside the Board room.

Likewise, we are asking the State Republican and Democratic delegations to

evaluate and recommend, in a nonpartisan way, board members to complete
the remaining terms of the four gubernatorial appointments to the Board.
These appointments also must be individuals committed to leaving their
political hats outside the Board room.

We believe this is the only path to reestablishing the trust that a subsequent
presidential search would be a non-partisan and effective process in
accordance with the guidelines established by the State University of New
York.
