The total effective capacity screen appears. Click on one of the columns to display more
information, including total effective capacity and total space used.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

Total Effective Storage Capacity Ratio: is the ratio of the total logical space used by the
active file system, snapshots and clones compared to the total amount of physical space

on disk needed to store those copies. It can be viewed as the total amount of space
savings due to all NetApp technologies, including in-line data compaction, in-line
deduplication, in-line compression and volume snapshots, volume clones, LUN and file
clones, post processing data reduction features, etc. This value does not include any
thin provisioning savings
Snapshots, Clones and Data Compaction: the ratio of logical data used by volume
clones, volume snapshots and space savings due to in-line data compaction compared to
the number of physical blocks needed to store the data. It does not include space
savings due to in-line de-duplication or in-line compression. This ratio includes space
savings due to newly provisioned LUNs (which reserve space in the flexvol), even if no
data has been written to the LUN yet and the volume is not space-guaranteed.
De-duplication and Compression: is the ratio of space savings from in-line data
compression, in-line de-duplication, in-line pattern removal and their post-processing
counterparts. it is the ratio equivalent of the output of df -s. Space savings due to file
clones and LUN clones is also included in this ratio. This value does not include any thin
provisioning savings.
Total Logical Used Capacity: is the sum of the used capacity represented by all files and
LUNs attached to the controller. For example, if you write a total of 10GiB of data to
two different files, regardless of whether compression or de-duplication saves space,
this value will be 10GiB.
Total Physical Used Capacity: This is the sum of the used physical capacity
represented by all files and LUNs attached to the controller. For example, if you write a
total of 10GiB of data to two different files, and in-line data compaction, de-duplication
and compression reduce the total amount of physical capacity used to 1 GiB, this value
will be 1GiB. In this case, the Total Effective Storage Capacity ratio for the controller
would be 10:1

Questions and Answers

Q: When will this calculator be available?
A: May 2, 2016. At SKO, it will be available to all NetApp employees.

Q: When will the customer and partner version be available?

2016 NetApp

For NetApp Internal Use Only

A: June 2016, with the release of ONTAP 9.

Q: What do I need to use it?

A: Access to the corporate networkeither directly or through VPN. You also need the serial
numbers of the Flash systems you want to check efficiency of

Q: Does it work with all NetApp systems?

A: No. The calculator works with Flash systems running cDOT 8.3.2 or later.

Q: Can I use this to prove that customers are getting their guaranteed 4:1 efficiency savings?
A: Yes.

Q: Why did NetApp create this calculator?

A: We wanted to provide consistency information to Flash customers asking about efficiency,
and wanted to help win more Flash business by making sure that we were quoting enough
storage, but not too much.

Q: What information does the calculator use?

A: The calculator uses information from AutoSupport reports to show capacity and utilization.
Q: I have comments or suggestions, where can I submit them?
A: Email ng-storeff-asup@netapp.com. We appreciate you taking time to let us know what you

AUTOSUPPORT AND FLASH

Predictive Technology to maximize availability
AutoSupport technology provides the deep insight and predictive analysis needed to proactively
maximize availability of Flash storage. To help you keep ahead of risks, this intuitive, cloudbased support is built into everything we do.

Whatever your reason for choosing Flash, AutoSupport can help you get the most from your
investment.

Reduce support costs with 24/7 monitoring that instantly sends an alert and opens a
case when a problem is detected. AutoSupport links your environment with our global
support ecosystem to fix problems faster, automatically gathering additional
information. Our support engineers resolve many of these cases without burdening your
staff.

See the health of your systems at a glance. AutoSupport provides actionable risk
mitigation plans based on our ecosystem of more than 200 billion diagnostic records in
multi-petabyte data lakes.

Smoothly add Flash to your network whenever you want and get the same visibility from
AutoSupport with integrated monitoring on each device

AutoSupport proactively monitors the health of your data, wherever it lives. It provides the
same level of visibility, stability, and risk management across all your data fabric, so you have
the freedom to use whichever storage makes sense for each workload. It continuously watches
your Flash, traditional, and cloud storage, drawing on billions of real-time and historical
diagnostic records to spot potential problems before they affect your business.

HOW DOES IT WORK

AutoSupport regularly sends status messages to NetApp. In the event of a problem, many of
these messages can automatically open a case, request additional data, and take corrective
action without customer input. Customers, partners, and NetApp support engineers use the
MyAutoSupport portal displayed as a dashboard on our support site to reduce risk, track overall
storage health, and manage issues. The portal shows system risks and issues, along with
recommended mitigation for each.

BIG DATA STORY

What makes AutoSupport valuable, though, is the depth of data behind it. Our multi-petabyte
Data Lake uses the latest technology. With Hadoop and big data cutting edge management
techniques to extend our products, to deliver more value to our customers.
For example, when we see an event and get an AutoSupport message, we create a case and run
diagnostics, if we need more info, we get it automatically through AutoSupport and send the
information to a support engineer who solves the problemwithout customer involvement.
With cDOT 8.3.1 we can automatically investigate (do deep analysis) and solve cases.
