Readthefollowingpassageandanswerthequestions4650:
Computing is in nature a problem driven science and therefore PBL approaches have been
applied to teach various subjects. Kay et al (2000). describe
PBL in foundation courses in computer science. The course is driven by specific problems
related to programming skills and the instructors have set specific criteria to measure the
success of their approach at the end of each problem. Having applied the approach for three
years the authors of the study conclude that the PBL approach promoted the collaboration
among students and their problem solving abilities.
A problem-based approach is used in a software development project (OKelly and Gibson,
2006). The authors claim that, with this approach, students are provided with the freedom to
think for themselves, activate their prior knowledge and acquire new knowledge in an
explorative and creative way. Another study supports that lecture based approaches are not
stimulating and the computer skills learnt are not transferable to other situations (Lai, 2005).
The author applied PBL in teaching pre-school teachers popular computer applications such
as Microsoft Office.
Based on their evaluation of the activities, the author concludes that the course was
motivational and also promotes higher order thinking skills.
Ellis et al (1998). refer to the full problem-based learning and the guided problem-based
learning approaches. In full problem-based learning, the nature of the problem guides and
drives the entire learning experience. There are no formal expositions of knowledge from the
expert and the students develop resources based on requirements they determine. In guided
problem-based learning, students have a problem to solve as a group.
1. What was the result of problem based learning approach?

While Boyd allows that some people consider email or discussion lists to be Social Software,
he makes an important distinction between traditional communication software and Social
Software. He explains that traditional software places people into groups with a top-down
approach; in other words, it assigns membership. However, Social Software takes a bottomup approach, which enables people to organize themselves into a network based on their
preferences. Therefore, with a bottom-up approach, people can sign up for a system and build

communities using their personal preferences (Marenzi et al. 2008). In contrast, traditional
communication software uses a top-down approach where people are assigned into a specific
organization or groups. Social Software based on supporting individuals who interact socially
with people who have similar interests (Marenzi et al. 2008). In addition, users typically
enjoy Social Software itself and work with various Social Software applications voluntarily.
For example, the authors of social media enjoy content that they have created themselves,
content that is copied from other media, and mash-ups that contain a mix of content that
could possibly be from several authors (Ahonen and Lietsala, 2007). The popularity of social
technologies is attributed to the increase in low-cost tools and the critical mass of millions of
people who are now connected to the Internet and to the people's need to feel like part of a
community (Avram, 2006). These users tend to rely more on their own personal social
networks than on traditional business structures (vinson 2005). describes additional features
of Social Software tools: They allow people to easily participate (by both contributing and
reading) in the activities; they provide opportunity for networking and allow for the selfforming of networks since people are usually both consumers and producers; and each
individual can be a member on several networks simultaneously (Avram, 2006).

The primary concern with the longevity of digital documents is the viewing problem
(Besser, 2000). Unlike analog or physical information, which tends to exist independent of
human involvement, digital information needs constant intervention to survive. History has
shown that digital documents are problematic by default. Whereas we can actually look at the
Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted 500 years ago, it is difficult if not impossible to simply view
documents on 8-in. Floppy disks created in the last 20 years, even if there has been an
immediate, proactive role in preserving them. Without concerted effort on the part of
archivists and preservationists, digital objects quickly become obsolete or inaccessible due to
unforeseen, although anticipated, advances in information technology. The variable media art
community currently utilizes four digital preservation strategies, all focused on the end
product. The first three methods have technical origins and are based on general digital
preservation practices. Related to the viewing problem they are: Refreshing, the upgrade of
storage mechanisms; migration, the premeditated upgrade of file formats; and emulation,
which focuses on development of operating systems able to run obsolete media. The fourth
option, developed by and for the new media art community, is reinterpretation (Depocas et al.
2003), where the curators attempt to recreate a work given comprehensive documentation of
the original artefact. Migration and emulation are the two primary methods in managing the
problem of obsolete file formats (Waters & Garrett, 1996). Migration focuses on the files
themselves, periodically updating files in new software formats. The second method of
preservation is emulation, which can be either at the system or the software level. System
emulation focuses on developing systems that mimic the hardware used to create or run the
original artefact.

revisit the area of copyright as it
pertains to scientific research publications
and to promote open access initiatives
in a manner that does not impede the
ability of scientists to publish in
journals of their choice.
Most researchers have encountered
(and my experience is largely limited
to India) have little interest in the open
access debates. As writers they
would, of course, like to publish in the
highest impact journals, regardless of
issues of access. As readers they
would like ready access to any
literature that they seek, invariably
demanding that institutions ensure
access even to journals that are
exorbitantly priced. The open access
advocates have had little impact on the
scientific community in India. Seminars
discussing open access issues are
invariably affairs in which the
evangelists preach to the converted.
The vocabulary of the open access
movement is often unfamiliar.
