Jovian

Planets
What are Jovian Planets?
It is also known as gas
giants
There are four Jovian
planets
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
What are Jovian Planets?

Jovian
came from Jupiter,
describing the other
gas giants in our solar
system as Jupiter
like Gas giants are not
composed entirely of Gas.
A rocky core exists
somewhere within these
balls
of gas
Jovian Planets are larger
than the other planets of
the Solar System and have
dozens of moons.
Jupiter
Orbit: 778, 330, 000 km
(5.20 AU) from the Sun
Diameter: 142, 984 km
(equatorial)
Mass: 1.900X........... Kg
Jupiter (a.k.a Jove; Greek
Zeus)
Fourth brightest object in
the
sky
Jupiter was first visited by
Pioneer 10 in 1973 and
later by
Pioneer 11, Voyager 1,
Voyager

2 and Ulysses. The

spacecraft
Galileo orbited Jupiter for
eight
years.
It is still regularly observed
by
the Hubble Space
Telescope.

The interior of Jupiter is hot:

the
core is probably about
20,000 K.

Jupiter
The gas planets do not
have solid
surfaces

Jupiter has rings like

Saturn's, but much
fainter and smaller. They
were totally
unexpected and were only
discovered
when two of the Voyager 1
scientists
insisted that after traveling
1 billion km it
was at least worth a quick
look to see if
any rings might be present.
Interesting Facts about
Jupiter

Jupiter is about 90%

hydrogen and 10% helium
(by numbers of
atoms, 75/25% by mass)
with traces of methane,
water, ammonia
and "rock
Jupiter probably has a core
of rocky material
amounting to
something like 10 to 15
Earth masses.
Above the core lies the
main bulk of the planet in
the form of liquid
metallic hydrogen.

The outermost layer is

composed primarily of
ordinary molecular
hydrogen and helium which
is liquid in the interior and
gaseous
further out.
Three distinct layers of
clouds are
Believe d to exist consisting
of
ammonia ice, ammonium
hydrosulfide and a mixture
of ice
and water.

Jupiter radiates more

energy into
space than it receives from
the
Sun.

Jupiters ring

Jupiter has the shortest day

of all the
planets
Jupiter orbits the Sun once
every 11.8 Earth
years
The Juno mission is its way
to Jupiter and will arrive in
July 2016.
Saturn
Orbit: 1,429,400,000 km
(9.54 AU) from Sun
Diameter: 120, 536 km
(equatorial)
Mass: 5.68e26 kg
Saturn (Greek Cronus)
Saturn was first visited by
NASA's Pioneer 11 in 1979
and
later by Voyager 1 and
Voyager
2. Cassini (a joint NASA /
ESA

project) arrived on July 1,

2004
and will orbit Saturn for at
least
four years.
Saturn
Saturns Rings
The Voyager pictures show
four additional faint rings.
Saturn's rings, unlike the
rings of the other planets,
are very
bright.

The F
ring, is a complex
structure made up of
several smaller rings along
which "knots" are visible.
Saturn has 53 named
satellites
Interesting Facts about
Saturn
Second
shortest day of any of the
solar systems planets.
Saturn orbits the Sun once
every 29.4 Earth years
Uranus
Orbit: 1,429,400,000 km
(9.54 AU) from Sun

Diameter: 120, 536 km

(equatorial)

Mass: 5.68e26 kg
Uranus (Greek Ouranos)

Uranus is composed
primarily of rock and
various
ices
, with only about
15% hydrogen and a little
helium.

It appears that Uranus does

not have a rocky core like
Jupiter and Saturn but
rather that its material is
more or less uniformly
distributed.

Uranus
' atmosphere is about
83% hydrogen, 15% helium
and 2% methane.

1.0247x
kg
Neptune
(Greek:
Poseidon) was the god of
the Sea.
The interior of Neptune
have rocky cores like Jupiter
and Saturn. But at that
point the similarity ends.
The pressures are never
sufficient to convert
molecular hydrogen to
metallic hydrogen in the
interior of Neptune.
Instead, a large mantle of
icy water and ammonia
forms about 20,000 km
below the surface.

Interesting Facts about

Uranus

Interesting Facts about

Uranus

Uranus turns on its axis

once every 17 hours, 14
minutes
Uranus makes one trip
around the Sun every 84
Earth years
Uranus is the Coldest Planet
Neptune

Neptune spins on its axis

very rapidly

Orbit
:
4, 504, 000,000
km
(30.06
AU) from Sun

Diameter:
49,532 km
(equatorial)

Mass:

The planet takes almost

165 Earth years to orbit our
sun
Pluto
Pluto is named after the
Greek god of the
underworld
Pluto was discovered on
February 18th, 1930 by
the Lowell Observatory:
Pluto has a eccentric and
inclined orbit
Pluto has 5 named satellite
