HOW
TO
Choose an assisted living center

f you have concerns about the ability

of an aging parent or relative to live
independently, you may want to
investigate Assisted Livingand sooner
rather than later.
The best time to
look is six months
to a year before
your loved one
will need to make
the move. If you
wait until your
loved one is being
discharged from

fewer choices.
Assisted Living is
often a great choice for our older generation
looking for more activity and socialization
in their lives, while offering assistance with
daily activities such as housekeeping, laundry
& meal preparation. Assisted Living can also
provide non-medical care such as medication
management and assistance with dressing,
bathing, ambulating and incontinence care.
Below is a list of some things to keep your
eyes open for when beginning your search:
GARDEN AND LANDSCAPING
Its a little known fact that the landscaping of an Assisted Living community will give
a good indication about the quality of the
community. Proper maintenance of the lawn
and gardens is a good sign. Just being able
to see nature as it grows and changes with
the seasons can be uplifting and soothing. A
community with a manicured lawn and garden can make a huge impact on the quality
of life for a loved one.

CLEANLINESS
Look around. Are public areas clean and
maintained? Is there garbage or debris around
the grounds? Dont forget the sniff test!
2 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

specific needs. How do they handle emergencies?

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Ask about staffing procedures during
the day versus at night. What time are
the doors locked? Do all visitors sign in?
Look for grab bars, emergency call buttons and other safety features.
LOCATION
Is the location convenient for family
members to visit? Also, ask if there are
any restrictions on visiting hours.
RATES
In addition to the monthly rate, are
there any community or move-in fees? Be
sure you understand what the monthly
rate includes. Ask about any additional
charges. What would cause the rate to increase and what is the highest it could go?

FRIENDLINESS
Observe the interaction between staff
members and residents. Is it cheerful and
respectful? Do staff members seem genuinely interested in the residents? Are they
listening, smiling and making eye contact?
ACTIVITIES AND RECREATION
Game and meeting areas can help the
resident make new friends and keep them
from feeling lonely. Leaving their apartment is an important part of a residents
overall health. Ask to see the activity
schedule. Are they offering activities to
match your loved ones interests? Observe.
Are both the residents and the staff enjoying the activities?

Publication of the Auburn Journal

MEALS
Discuss entre choices and how special
diets and/or requests are accommodated.
Review a weekly menu to look for healthy
options. Always ask for a complimentary
meal to taste the food. This is also a great
way to get a good feel of the ambience of
the community and to meet some of the
current residents. The dining room experience is an important and major part of each
residents day.
CAREGIVING
Again, observe the current residents to
insure they are well-groomed and dressed
appropriately. Ask about the staffs training
while discussing your or your loved ones

DEMENTIA
What is the communitys philosophy on
how those with a dementia diagnosis are
cared for? Are the care-givers specially
trained in Memory Care? Are the activities geared toward those with memory
impairment? Is the area safe and secure?
OTHER RESIDENTS
Ask them how they like the community.
They are your best source for a recommendation (or not).
OVERVIEW
Have all your questions been answered
satisfactorily? Do you feel welcome and
comfortable? Is the staff respectful and
sincere? Can you picture yourself or your
loved one living at the community and
enjoying time with the other residents
that youve met? Would you/they feel
safe, loved and valued in this new home?
Trust your instincts and your heart!

choose a mattress

o youre tossing and turning, your

body aches, and you cant sleep. It
could be time for a new mattress.
There is no set guide for deciding when
its time to buy one. But if yours is saggy,
lumpy, more than seven years old, stained,
or if you wake feeling tired and achy; it is
time to go mattress shopping. The good
news is that technology has given you
more choices as to the type of mattress you
might need.
There are many types of mattresses and
levels of firmness to choose from, but no
true science to support the idea that one
type of mattress is better than another.
Everyone sleeps a little differently and has
different likes and needs. The best mattress
is the one that gives you the best nights
sleep and it isnt necessarily the most
expensive one. So, you need to take the
time and try the mattresses. If you sleep
on your side, you need to try them lying on
your side. The way you sleep. There is no
industry standard to define commonly used
terms like firm or plush. So, wear loose
clothing and take your time finding the
firmness that you prefer.
There are many manufactures and many
types of mattresses that offer different
support qualities. Tempur-Pedic is the
leading manufacturer in Memory Foam
mattresses. They conform and support you
extremely well. They last a little longer
than a conventional mattress and have less
Motion Transfer. They are however, more
expensive than the conventional innerspring mattress.
Simmons Beautyrest and Sealy Posturepedic are still leading manufactures with
various feels and support stories. There are
also more Eco Friendly latex mattresses.
They also, are long lasting with various
firmnesses.

HOW TO
L

choose a personal trainer

ooking to Get Fit and Healthy?

How to Choose a Personal Trainer
If you are one of the millions
of Americans who want to get in shape
and gain muscle while losing some of that
excess fat, you no doubt are looking for
the simplest, safest, most effective way to
get the job done. Personal training once
thought of as a service only the wealthy
could afford, has become a cornerstone
of the health and fitness industry. As
more people become concerned with their
health and appearance, the use of personal
trainers has increased in a big way. The
personal training industry is in its third
decade and is stronger than ever, with an
expanding base of diverse clients and multiple ways to reach them. Personal training
ranks sixth among the American College
of Sports Medicines top 10 fitness trends
for 2016, and it has ranked in the top 10
for the past 9 years of the survey (ACSM
2015).
Why should people pay for personal
trainers, though, when they can simply
learn from their friends who have been
going to the gym for years? The answer is
that it can save time and reduce injuries.
Instead of spending your time trying to
figure out how to safely use complicated, high-tech equipment, you can simply
follow the trainers instructions. This helps
you make the most of your limited workout
time and can keep you from injuring yourself from a simple lack of knowledge.
However, with the demand for personal trainers on the rise, consumers should
know that not all are created equal. There
are a few key points to consider when
choosing to hire a personal trainer.
1. EDUCATION
First and foremost, a personal trainer should hold a current national level
6 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

4. FIND OUT WHAT THE TRAINER CHARGES

Rates vary depending on the session
length, the trainers credentials, experience
and expertise, and the geographic location
of where he or she works and you live. For
example, a personal trainer who works in
a fitness club will probably charge less per
hour than one who works independently
and needs to come to your home or office.
Also be sure the trainer is focusing on you
your health history and fitness goals.
Beware the trainer who takes a one-sizefits-all approach to fitness, one whos pressuring you to join the club (some trainers
get kickbacks for referrals and sign-ups)
and the name dropper. Just because a
trainer has worked with a high-profile
client doesnt automatically ensure they are
a skilled and knowledgeable trainer.

certification. A college degree in the fields

of exercise science, kinesiology or nutrition
improves the knowledge and credibility that
a trainer has in developing your program,
though not having a degree certainly does
not preclude a fitness professional from
being effective.
2. WORKING EXPERIENCE AND AREA
OF SPECIALIZATION
Inquire about the years of experience
a trainer has working with clients. More
importantly, ask about the trainers expertise working with individuals with your
needs or limitations. If you have a medical
condition or a past injury, a personal trainer
should design a session that accounts for
this. If you have a bum knee or bad back,
youll want a trainer who knows how to
handle injuries. If youre a woman aiming
to slim your thighs, a muscleman with a

Publication of the Auburn Journal

drill-sergeant attitude may not be the best

fit.
3. ASK FOR A FREE CONSULTATION &
TALK TO THE TRAINER
Developing a personal, yet professional,
relationship with your trainer is very important. Most will offer a complimentary
consultation to see if you click prior to
signing on the dotted line for a number of
sessions.
Trust your instincts about the impressions the trainer makes upon you. The
personal trainer you select should motivate
you by positive, not negative, reinforcement. Even more important, that trainer
should be someone you like.
Ask yourself if you think you could get
along well with the trainer and whether
you think the trainer is genuinely interested
in helping you.

5. LIABILITY INSURANCE AND

BUSINESS POLICIES
Many personal trainers operate as
independent contractors and are not employees of a fitness facility. You should find
out if the trainer you want to hire carries
professional liability insurance. A reputable
personal trainer should also make sure that
you understand the cancellation policy and
billing procedure. The best way to avoid
confusion and protect your rights is to have
those policies in writing.
The right personal trainer can help
their client make better, healthier choices, consistently and consciously. If you
are looking to eat better, exercise more
intelligently, manage your stress, sleep and
recover better, take better care of yourself
and last but not least, have fun yes fun,
then hiring and working with a personal
trainer can be invaluable in helping you
reach your fitness goals. Doing a little bit of
research beforehand can help to enhance
the experience beyond what you ever
dreamed was possible.

I have truly enjoyed and appreciated my time at ProActive and know that I would have quit many

challenges over the last few years and have been able to maintain a good basic core fitness that is
so important. I have great respect for your hard work and commitment to your business and clients
and I will refer friends to you without reservation. Thank you again so much for your support and
guidance.

I have trained with Suzanne for 15 years, and consider her to be the top fitness trainer in the area,
and a very accomplished professional. I have greatly benefited from her holistic approach to fitness,
and her commitment to me in setting, and achieving, my personal goals. I attribute a great deal of
the good health and fitness that I have enjoyed in my 40s, 50s and now in my 60s, to Suzannes
experienced guidance. I wouldnt think of training anywhere else. The Studio is a state-of the-art
facility, with a unique program, and the atmosphere there encourages and supports my desire
to stay healthy and fit.
~ Ellen MacInnes, Auburn, CA
I want to thank you and Michael for all of the hard work and efforts you both put into my training.
Even though I am in my 60s, overweight and constantly nursing this bum knee, you push me to do
my best. I feel my body changing, and my strength increasing all the time. It is wonderful knowing
that I am making healthy progress each and every time I come into ProActive. It is such a valid and
extraordinarily good use of my time, in my over extended life. Thanks again.

HOW TO

choose roofing material

More often than not, if you are re-roofing, the existing roof on your home will
determine your choice of material. The
roof contributes greatly to the look of the
house, so when re-roofing, adding on or
building a new home, it pays to consider
the options.
The most common choices for this area
are: asphalt laminated shingles, concrete
tile and metal panels; all three have their
short comings and all three have their
advantages and disadvantages.
Lets talk about asphalt and composition
shingles as they are the most popular.
Asphalt shingles have been around since
around 1901, an American-made product;
thus, they are time-proven. Shingles keep
improving over the years, and now with
just the basic shingle, manufacturers are
offering a 50-year, non-prorated warranty
on their products. What a great selling
feature!
I have installed composition shingles on
multi-million dollar homes. I believe that
there is a comp shingle that would look
good on every home. Shingles are very
walkable; important when access to the
roof is needed to clean leaves and debris
off or access the roof to clean gutters or
chimneys.
They are Class A Fire-rated; the highest
rating besides reproof. The shingles are
medium weight. Most home could hold the
weight of two comp roofs.
A typical comp roof should last 20-25
years; maybe longer with improvements
that have been made.
When we remove a comp roof now, we
take the material to a recycler. They grind
it up and use it for roads. Out of the three
types we have discussed here, it is the least
expensive by a fair amount.
Concrete tile is the next most popular.
Tile has a thick, heavy, rich look and the

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER

1. How long will the new roof last?
2. Is it fire resistant?
3. Will it compliment the style of the

4. Are materials eco-friendly and
recyclable?
5. Is it too heavy for the existing
roof framing?
6. Does the roof have enough slope?
7. How much will it cost?
manufacturer gives a 50-year warranty.
Although the tile may last 50 years, the underlayment (paper under the tile) may not.
It is an intricate part of the roofing system.
We know when tile is brand new that
water will get through to the underlayment. We make the roof waterproof before

Publication of the Auburn Journal

any tile is installed. So keep in mind, the

roof will only last as long as the underlayment. You will want to stay off your tile
roof as much as possible as it is tricky to
walk on. It is important to inspect the roof
every couple of years and do maintenance;
but, leave that to the professionals!
Tile is quite expensive when re-roofing
because of the added cost of structural
reinforcements. Depending on the underlayment, tile could last 25-50 years.
Tile is fireproof and the best choice in
that respect. In my opinion, tile is not the
best choice when there is a lot of trees
dropping debris on the roof as this dams
the water and diverts it off metal flashing
and onto the underlayment, thus, deteriorating the underlayment more quickly.
The least popular material, except in
snow country, is metal.
Most metal roofing is galvanized steel

with a high-grade paint coating. It comes

in panels cut to length for your particular
roof. It is more expensive than comp but
more in line with tile.
Two basic types of metal roofing are
Exposed Fastener and Concealed Fastener
systems. The Concealed Fastener system is
more expensive but will last much longer
and have much less maintenance. This
system will last approximately 35 years
depending on the underlayment. Exposed
Fastener systems will last approximately 25
years, again, depending on the underlayment.
Although metal is fireproof, because
of heat transfer, you need a fire resistant
underlayment to get a Class A fire rating.
Metal is the most light weight material
of the three. In areas with snow or lots of
leaves and debris build-up, metal is a good
choice. These are the basics for choosing
your roofing material. Obviously, there are
other materials for steep-slope roofing and
materials for low-slope roofing.
I hope this information helps you with
your roofing decisions. Please call me if you
have any questions.

HOW
TO
choose a property management company
O

wning rental property should be a

great investment. Managing the
property can be a very time consuming endeavor. For those who dont have
the time or want the potential headache,
hiring a property management company is
a wise choice. Choosing the right property
management company can make or break
your real estate investment. There are new
companies starting up all over. How do you
tell them apart? Whether you are a firsttime landlord or a seasoned investor, its
important to ask the right questions. Here
are some suggestions.
First, find out how long the management company has been in business. Are
they licensed, insured and bonded? The
well-seasoned, properly qualified property
manager is more likely to understand how
to protect your investment. They will also
be more likely to follow appropriate procedures for handling your rental income.
Is the company well staffed? Having a
solid staff of seasoned dedicated employees
provides additional confidence, especially if
they offer after-hours response to emergencies.
Experienced managers will have a huge
advantage in their approach to tenant
relationships. Having better tenants means
more income over the life of your investment. The right property manager has
higher quality tenants. Better tenants pay
rent on time more often and generally put
less wear and tear on your property than
tenants that are not screened as thoroughly.
Find how tenants are screened. Ask if
the company runs credit and back-ground
checks. Do they use professional credit
bureaus? Do they run eviction searches on
prospective ten-ants? A licensed property
manager will also be familiar with the laws,
including those related to tenant screening and the handling of a security deposit
12 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

transmittal.
Next, find out how they approach
setting a rent. Is it realistic? Will it lead
to tenant retention and less vacancy? Ask
how long their tenants stay in residency
and if they frequently renew their leases.
Short tenant cycles will cost landlords more
money, including additional management
fees when you are charged for each tenant
turnover. When vacancies arise, how efficient is the company at marketing va-cant
property?
Unfortunately, evictions are sometimes necessary. Ask how many successful
evictions they have handled, the estimated
time it takes to secure the property and
the cost involved, a competent manager
can handle most of the steps themselves,
saving you money.

Publication of the Auburn Journal

Ask about the policies for maintenance

and repairs. Maintaining your property
avoids large future costs and increases
tenant satisfaction. Does the company
use licensed and insured contractors with
vetted skills? What is their response time?
Delays can result in additional repair
costs and loss of tenancy. Prudent use of
your funds is imperative to the success of
your investment. Avoid the manager who
appears to save you money by letting your
investment fall behind on deferred maintenance. There is a balance that will benefit
you in the long run.
Finally, ask the property manager for references. Long term tenants speak volumes
for the company, as do satisfied clients.
When it comes to a quality manager social
media is the least re-liable source. A prop-

erty manager is there to protect you and

your asset. You want a property manager
who enforces the lease and treats everyone equally. This is not always popular, but
quality tenants honor their commitment
and follow the guidelines. A strong manager will save you time, money and create
solid results.

choose a storage facility

here are a number of things to

consider when you are looking for a
self storage facility
Just as no two people are the same, no
self storage facilities are created equal. It
requires some time and energy to research,
but youll be glad you did when you know
your valuables are safe, secure and protected.
Find a reputable facility with 24hour security, such as security cameras,
alarm systems, fences, and secured entries.
Make sure you have individual door alarms
and there is a property manager who lives
on site to monitor security.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Ask

rodents, insects and other pests that can
cause considerable damage. Ask about
what steps are taken to ensure damage

Are the units clean and well lit? Is

the unit dry and adequately ventilated?
Does the facility provide climate control
units to protect your valuable documents,

to extreme heat or moisture?
Do the units offer shelving? Wide
or tall doors to accommodate the warehousing of large items? Does the facility
offer free use of their truck for moving your
belongings?
Do they have dollies and carts available? Do they sell locks, boxes, and packing
supplies? Can you park next to the doors to
unload? Is 18-wheeler access available?
Is the staff friendly and knowledgeable as they help you choose the right size
of unit for your needs? Do you need RV,
auto or boat storage?
Decide what you need to store and
ask the manager to help you select the
correct size. Are the storage spaces all on
ground level?
Check around. Call several storage
facilities to find the best price for the size

Ask about their long term lease and

monthly discounts. What are their terms
on deposits and late fees? Are there fees
for moving out of the unit. What are their
payment options? Do they take credit
cards, offer monthly billing, pay online,
auto payments, or drop box payments?
Most of all, read the contract carefully! Check their website for customer
comments and referrals.
Location is important. Make sure the
property has easy access. If you frequently

HOW TO
I

select the best hospital

t is a good idea to select a hospital,

or be familiar with local health care
options, before you need care. When
illness strikes or you suffer an unexpected injury, it is important to choose the
hospital best suited to your specific needs.
By researching in advance the services and
facilities of the hospitals near you, you will
be better able to make an informed decision about the care youd like to receive.
While it is certainly true that most
hospitals follow similar practices and
procedures in the care of patients, there
are often differences in available services,
technology or specific treatment services.
When it comes time to selecting a hospital for treatment, here are some considerations to review:
Geographical location: What health
care options are easily accessible from your
home and work? What programs and services are available close to home or family
members?
Physician Privileges: What facilities
does your preferred specialty physician
have privileges at or prefer to refer patients
to? Your physician may like one facility
over another and its a good idea to talk
through your hospital options before an
emergency or urgent situation.
Insurance: Different facilities have
different costs and in some cases, accept
different health insurance coverage. For
example, your out-of-pocket costs could be
lower or higher, depending on whether that
facility is in-network or outside of your
health insurance network.
If your health care preference is not
based on location or insurance coverage,
consider other features a hospital may have
to offer like accreditations or awards for
specific types of care. Many hospitals offer
accreditation with the Joint Commission,
an organization that implements specific
16 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

standards of care within medical facilities. If the Joint Commission accredits a

hospital, you can feel confident that the
facility maintains high levels of quality in
areas ranging from nursing care practice to
storage and organization.
Hospitals that are accredited by the
Joint Commission are subject to frequent
performance evaluations, and applicable
standards are continuously reviewed for
possible improvement.
Also feel free to ask whether a hospital
has been recognized or certified in the area
of care that you are researching. There are
many third-party organizations that award
hospitals for achievements like high patient
satisfaction or excellence in a specific type

Publication of the Auburn Journal

of care for example like stroke, hip fracture or heart failure. Such distinctions are a
great thing to look for when searching for
the best hospital for your needs.
Depending on what procedure you need
to have performed, choosing a hospital that
specializes in particular areas of surgery or
medical care may be necessary.
Many hospitals care for every type of
patient that comes through its doors but
also have several areas in which they specialize. For example, two hospitals in the
same city may offer care, but one specializes in gastroenterology, while another has
an advanced cardiac unit.
Hospitals may even transfer patients
between locations to ensure the highest

level of care. Depending on the needs of

the patient, and the particular illness or
injury involved, the hospital with a relevant
specialty unit may be the obvious choice.
Choosing a high quality hospital is
essential in order to achieve the best
outcome during instances of illness or
injury. Hospitals offer a wide range of care
and service types, and it is important to
analyze a series of considerations before
you decide.
Determining which types of care and
treatment are offered at different facilities, and carefully balancing your personal
priorities are the best ways to make a wise
choice when selecting the hospital that is
best for you.

HOW TO

pick a hearing aid dispenser

hile choosing the right hearing

aid can significantly enhance
your life, the process for
selecting one begins long before you begin
using the device. That most important step
is choosing the right hearing aid dispenser.
The dispenser, or the company that
provides
your hearing
aid, is key to
ensuring you
get the best
use out of a
hearing aid.
Experienced
staff at the
dispenser
not only help
you pick the
right device,
DAVID GIBSON
but theyll
also help
teach you how to use it properly. A good
dispenser will also be of assistance to you
long after the sale.
Here are some things to look for when
choosing a hearing aid dispenser.
CERTIFICATION
Every state has a different certification or licensure process for hearing aid
dispensers. Your doctor or audiologist
should be able to direct you to a qualified
dispenser in your area, and you can also
check with your state government to verify
that the dispenser is certified to operate in
your state.
Keep in mind that certification is a
minimum standard, though, and youll
want to talk to your friends, family and
neighbors to get advice about which
providers theyve used and how happy they

offer a 30-day trial so you can make sure

the product works exactly as you expect.
You should also ask about what kind of
warranty the hearing aid comes with. Many
hearing aids are available with coverage for
loss or damage, almost like an insurance
policy, which can be very important down
the road. Make sure you understand what
the warranty covers, how much it costs
and whether there will be any fees if your
hearing aid needs to be replaced or repaired
during the warranty period.

were with the experience. Just like hiring

any professional, the more you know about
their reputation, the better a decision you
can make.
PRODUCT LINE
Most hearing aid dispensers offer
products from several brands at a variety
of price points. Youll want to ask which
brands the dispenser carries and also
inquire about their price range.
With good quality hearing aids often
costing several thousand dollars, youll
want to make sure you have several to pick
from that can meet your needs without
wasting money on features or performance
you dont need.

PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE
Since most of us arent experts on hearing aids, you need to look for a dispenser
who is. Not only should they have an understanding of the medical reasons behind
hearing loss since every hearing situation
is different but they should have indepth
knowledge of their hearing aid products.
Hearing aids can be complex devices,
especially when youre looking at high-end
models that can be customized extensively
to match your hearing needs. A good dispenser can take those technical terms and
make them easy for you to understand.
TRIAL AND WARRANTY
Ask if the dispenser offers a trial period
for their hearing aids. Some companies

FOLLOW-UP SERVICE
When you buy a hearing aid from a good
dispenser, one of the things youre paying
for is good service. And that includes service
after the sale.
This is especially true when it comes time
to have your hearing aid adjusted or repaired.
Its common for hearing aids to require
several follow-up visits to make sure they are
fitted and adjusted correctly for your ear, so
you should look for a dispenser that is both
technically proficient and a good listener.
They should be able to understand your hearing needs and make any changes necessary
to fix any problems you find.
You should also ask about loaner devices if
your hearing aid needs a repair. Most hearing
aid dispensers will be able to do some repairs
in-house quickly, but major repairs may
require your hearing aid to be mailed off. This
is when its good to know their policy about
loaner devices.
In the end, if you shop carefully and
investigate their reputation, you can find a
hearing aid dispenser that will help you find
the right aid at the right price. And when you
do, youll be much more likely to be happy
with the results from your hearing aid.

5 Things You Should Know Before Buying

Your Next Pair of Hearing Aids
+ Dont feel rushed.

Friends and family are a great resource.

Advertisements and promotions cant tell
you nearly as much as a friend who has had
a fabulous experience. If you dont know
anyone, then visit a few offices, at least two,
and get a sense of who you will be working
with. You want to feel comfortable
with your provider and not feel
hurried or that you are taking up the
providers time.

+ Try before you buy.

It is the law in California that individuals

can return their hearing aids before 45
days if they do not meet their needs. An
office that sells top tier brands of hearing
aids and has a skilled professional should
be able to program the hearing aids so
they provide a dramatic improvement to
your lifestyle. If you are not impressed
with the performance of your hearing aids,
you need to return them. Dont give up,
however! At our office, The Hearing Aid
Center, we know that one size does
not fit all, so we carry hearing aids
from several manufacturers. If our
clients arent totally happy with their hearing
aids after several adjustments, we begin a
hearing aid trial with a new manufacturer so
we can find the perfect fit.

improvement in understanding your friends
and family, then ask to try a different hearing

you to include us, The Hearing Aid
Center, in your due diligence. We

By David Gibson

There are usually 4-5 levels of technology:

basic, mid-level, advanced, and premium.
Most people can be fit successfully in midlevel or advanced hearing aids. There
is a significant price range for hearing
aids. Ask for details. So why do some
offices charge $1,500 for a midlevel hearing aid and others charge
$2,500? This is where your due diligence
is essential and can save you money and
disappointment. Find out what is included
in the price: warranties, free batteries, free
follow-up visits.
Hearing aid manufacturers have made
some great improvements in the last several
years. Understanding voices in noisy places
such as restaurants or large rooms has
greatly improved by enhancing the clarity
of speech and minimizing background
noise. The first month of wearing
your hearing aids and kicking the
tires is crucial. Wear them in restaurants,
at the movies, watching TV, on the phone,
talking in the car. If there are environments
where the aids performance is falling short,
feel comfortable about calling the provider
and getting an earlier appointment so that
they can better adjust your aids to meet your
needs and challenges.

HOW TO
B

choose a title company

uying or selling a home is one of

the most stressful things youll
ever do.
It is an enormous transaction. Even
the smallest mistake will cause major
headaches. Last minute issues could add
unwanted drama and completely stop
the deal. A single might even trigger legal
headaches.
Thats why finding a qualified and
experienced title company to help you
complete the transaction is essential.

REPUTATION
The best title companies have a solid
reputation with real estate agents and
attorneys. A great way to choose a title
company is to ask for referrals.
Find out which title companies Realtors and real estate experts prefer in your
community. Be sure to get several recommendations.
Remember, title companies have a key
role in real estate sales everything from
researching the titles history to setting up
escrow accounts and verifying what taxes
may be owed. You dont want to trust such
an important job to a company without
happy clients and a long track record.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
It is vital that you find a title company
that knows your local area well.
Real estate laws vary from state to
state. Municipalities will also have their
own common practices and policies that
real estate agents must navigate.
Skilled title companies will excel in
three areas: quality, speed and service.
Having a company that knows your local
area, including everyone involved from the
Realtors to the courthouse employees, will
go a long way toward helping you at the
closing table.
When problems or questions arise,
20 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

a title company should already have

long-standing relationships with people
who can get the issue resolved quickly and
correctly.
LOCATION
Title companies are typically where
participants sign documents at the closing
table, so the title companys location and
hours are important to consider.
Even if you are closing at another site
such as an attorneys office having an
accessible title company can be an asset.

Publication of the Auburn Journal

All other things being equal, you should

pick a company with a convenient office
location where you feel comfortable.
FEES
Have a clear understanding of all the
applicable costs and fees upfront.
Some charges may be negotiable, while
others may be set in stone. A Realtor can
explain all the title-related costs to make
sure youre being charged a reasonable
rate for the services provided.
Basing a title company on their fee

schedule, however, is not a good idea.

Dont try to pinch pennies. It is very important they do the job right. You may find
that it wasnt worth the savings if problems arise or if the cheaper title company
doesnt offer fast, friendly and experienced
service.
It is important to trust the judgment
of professionals. Discuss different title
companies with real estate experts in
your area. After all, they work with title
companies every day and will have a lot of
valuable knowledge to impart.

HOW TO
S

choose a solar company

olar panels can lower your home or

business energy bills while helping
the planet and adding value to your
property.
Thats why more Americans are turning
to solar power.
As a result, more companies are offering
to install solar panels. So it is important
to pick the product and installer that will
result in the best long-term benefits for
your situation.
Here are some things to consider when
choosing a solar company.

REPUTATION
In a fast-growing industry like solar energy, its especially important to know the
reputation of the company youre dealing
with. New companies may be showing up
in the marketplace, but that doesnt mean
theyll necessarily offer the best service or
be around long enough to support their
product line years from now.
Look for stability in your solar installer. Youll want to find a company that
has developed a great reputation over a
number of years with a long track record of
satisfied customers from projects similar in
scope to yours.
THE SYSTEM
There are a wide range of solar panel
systems on the market, and the technology itself is going to be a big part of your
decision. Your solar system can be tied to
the existing electrical grid or completely
off the grid, for example, which will require
different equipment and setups.
No matter what system you decide
on, the key thing youll be looking for is
efficiency, and that means understanding
both the energy generated and the cost of
doing so.
Some solar systems generate power
22 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

If the company is familiar with construction methods that will increase the
structures overall efficiency, too, thats even
better.

more efficiently than others, depending

on their design and the type of materials
theyre made from. And price efficiency can
matter, too, because you dont want to find
yourself spending a whole lot more money
for just a tiny increase in power.
Likewise, if a slightly bigger investment
can yield a large boost in energy generated, it can make sense to spend the extra
money.
Look closely at the math, and pick the
system that gives you the best return for
your money. Many solar systems will pay
for themselves over a number of years, so
choosing one to be installed by a wellregarded company can be a wise financial
move.

Publication of the Auburn Journal

OTHER SERVICES
Homeowners or commercial users will
often want more than just solar panels
installed. If you think thats a possibility, you
can look for a company that offers a range
of services, such as radiant heat systems
and solar thermal systems.
And if youre doing new construction
that will have solar components, look for a
solar company that can also serve as your
general contractor.
The bigger the project, the more important it is to have the solar systems integrated
into the design and construction from start
to finish, not added on as an afterthought
by a contractor that doesnt typically incorporate solar elements into their projects.

FINANCING OPTIONS
Finally, a good solar company will
present you with a wide range of options to
help you pay for the upgrades.
They should be familiar with all types of
government incentive programs and willing
to help walk you through the process of
getting them.
Federal programs are available to
consumers who install solar panels on their
homes, and additional state and local incentives are sometimes available. Make sure you
thoroughly understand all these programs,
though, because their requirements can be
complex and important to follow exactly.
In addition to the help from government
programs, there are three ways buyers typically purchase their systems:
Paying cash: The simplest and most
direct way of paying for your system, cash
buyers may be eligible for a 30 percent tax
credit from the federal government along
with other rebates that can reduce the
installation cost up to 50 percent in total.
Loans: Both home equity loans and
unsecured solar loans may be available to
help you purchase a solar system. Some
solar companies offer loans for up to 20
years, while home equity loans may have
the benefit of letting you deduct the interest
from your income taxes.
Leases: You may also be able to lease
your solar system with no down payment
or upfront costs. A solar lease will let you
make affordable monthly payments to pay
for your system, perhaps even including
a performance guarantee and scheduled
maintenance services included in the
monthly cost.

HOW TO

choose a real estate agent

hen you are buying or selling

a home, it is essential to
choose the right real estate
agent for your needs.
The best real estate agents are energetic, positive and proactive.
On the other hand, selecting the
wrong agent can cost you lots of time
and money.
So how do you find the best agent for
your situation? Here are some ideas to
keep in mind.

REAL ESTATE AGENT VS. REALTOR

A real estate agent may or may not be
a realtor, but every realtor is required to
be a licensed real estate agent.
To become a realtor, a real estate
agent has to join the National Association of Realtors (NAR). This allows him or
her to attend industry meetings, get NAR
newsletters, and access software and
educational tools. Your local agents are
also part of the California Association of
Realtors (CAR) and local associations in
the counties they cover.
Realtors adhere to a strict code of ethics and have solid knowledge of the real
estate business. These professionals have
been trained well, which means they will
provide you with the best service.
WHERE TO START LOOKING
Recommendations are one of the
best ways to find a qualified real estate
agent or realtor. Ask people in your social
network for referrals. With social media
being so prevalent, you might also try
googling your realtor as well so see what
past clients may be saying.
Sometimes agents are good at helping
clients purchase homes, but not as skilled
at selling them. Keep that in mind when
searching for the right professional.
24 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

You might also contact local brokers

or search the NAR directory online.
Always work with credible, responsible
agents. Otherwise you may find yourself
wasting time.
COMFORT LEVEL
At the initial consultation with a prospective real estate professional, focus on
your comfort level while interacting with
them.
Do you get the feeling they are
genuinely concerned about your needs?
Are they asking you questions to better
gauge your needs or are they talking
about themselves? Do they know the
current housing market? Can they negotiate a contract?
It is important that you feel comfortable with the agent. You must trust that
this person can behave ethically and help
you secure a good deal.

Publication of the Auburn Journal

COMMUNICATION AND PLANNING

Your agent should be an effective
communicator. If you are selling your home,
your agent should develop an effective marketing plan, explain it to you, and respond
to any questions or concerns you have.
The marketing plan will probably involve
placing advertisements, posting on social
media and/or other websites and if necessary, conducting open houses to invite the
public for home viewings. Ask them if they
have office or local tours?
If you are purchasing a home, the agent
should be familiar with the areas you are
looking, listen to your guidelines and price
ranges and be able to glean your needs and
give you honest feedback on properties that
come up.
Above all, when you are in escrow, your
real estate agent should provide updates
on progress AND timelines AND return
your phone calls, emails or texts in a timely
fashion.

MORE RESOURCES
To get a better idea about the process
of buying and selling a home, conduct
some research on your own. Real estate
magazines contain good information and
can be a great way to start your research.
Dont forget the Internet has outstanding
sources of content written just for you,
such as www.Realtor.com, which is associated with NAR and contains free, useful
information.
You may find housing statistics,
market forecasts and tips, but nothing
beats the power of networking. You need
to find people with similar interests who
will help you in your endeavor.
Upon successfully buying or selling
your home, keep your real estate agents
contact information on hand.
You may want to refer other people
to him or her. You may also need their
services again some day.

Heres what people are saying about Jo...

Jo is the most friendly and hard working realtor we have ever worked with. We moved to Auburn from Michigan and had no community or family
connections. Jo made sure we were well informed and she really cared about our interest in finding a new home. She understood the importance of
making sure we were in the right house and the right neighborhood. My wife and I always felt like we were Jo's number one client.
- rrsischo

Not only did Jo find us the perfect house for us but she helped connect us into the community and went the extra mile
to make sure our daughter was registered for high school by supplying the necessary documents so me and my husband
didn't have to take off work. Jo is not just a realtor but someone who goes the extra mile. I highly recommend her.
- Cdispensa
Jo was far more than what we expect in a realtor. Sbe convers all the bases, things that we as a home owner would not think of. How to stage the

home. When to do that. Pricing it correctly for the market. Very knowledgeable about the area our home was located. What to expect from the
home inspectors. What needed to be corrected and what in addition could be done to enhance the sale. . Answered all the little questions we asked.
Checked on the work being done to our home. Great to work with. She know her stuff. We sold it at full asking price within the first week!!
- frankstrong1

Jo is a pro, and she provided excellent service and was tenacious in selling our home. She helped us prepare our
home for sale -- staging and de-cluttering and making it look its best. She also provided excellent suggestions
re: changes we could make to optimize our home's appeal to potential buyers. If you need a full-service realtor
who is proactive throughout the long and complex process of selling your home, Go See Jo.

We found Joanne Barragan on the internet when looking for a realtor in Auburn, CA. What a find! Jo is everything a good realtor

should be: Friendly, knowledgeable, and open to our requests and needs. She spent many hours and several days driving us to
numerous towns in the Auburn area. She also introduced us to different communities which helped us decide on the perfect fit for our
lifestyle. Jo Barragan is the total package. I recommend her highly. Looking for a house in the Auburn area? Go see Jo!
- Uddamudda

Jo Barragan is a fantastic realtor and very fun to work with. We would highly recommend Jo if you need to buy or sell a
home for several reasons. First and foremost, she is very fun to work with, and easy to get along with. She knows how to
take "stress" out of the transaction process. Second, from a business standpoint, she got our house sold (and also found us
our dream house) for what we were hoping to sell it for.......period! If you need a local agent that knows the area like the
"back of her hand" and will work tirelessly for you, then Go See Jo.

HOW TO

choose a real estate agency

eputation is a companys biggest

asset.
So when the time comes to buy
or sell a home you want to pick a reputable
Realtor and real estate agency.
A good real estate agency will act in
your best interests. Thats why its essential
to find a high-quality real estate agency.
Ask your family, friends and neighbors for
recommendations. Their experiences will
guide you toward a reputable agency.
What do people say about their services?
Once you have a list of possibilities,
do some research. Find out how long the
agency has been in business. Ideally, you
want people who know your community.
If the real estate agency is merely a side
business, it might not give you the best
results. Buying and selling homes is a full
time job.
Look on the Internet and read customer
service reviews. They should also have an
impact on your overall impression of an
agency.
Once you have narrowed your list,
contact some businesses and ask them
questions. You should know about their
listings, fees and commissions.
Choose an agency that has connections
with the community, a sharp understanding
of neighborhoods that interest you, and
solid contacts with other realty companies.
This assumes major importance when
youre selling your current house, because
the agency usually handles the sale while
the Realtor helps you find your new one.
The marketing strategy and advertising
is what makes each agency unique. It will
greatly influence the sale of your home.
Although most companies might look
the same, real estate agencies have a
preference for the kind of properties they
show or sell. These concentrations might
include commercial properties or high-end
homes. Try to find a business with a focus
26 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

that concentrates on selling homes similar

to yours.
Look at an agencys listings to see if your
home would fit in nicely with their existing
clients. If you were purchasing a home,
would you find their listings easy to read
and informative?
The size of the agency will have an
impact on your experience. Small agencies
can provide more personalized service, but
and they may not have the same networking advantages of a large company due to
the Internet. Big agencies may have more
opportunities to network and sell your
home, but they may have to divide their
time among many clients.
Be prepared to ask an agency the
following questions if you are selling your

Publication of the Auburn Journal

home:
How will you advertise my home? Will
you use the Internet and newspapers?
How many pictures of my house will
appear online?
On which sites will my home be
featured?
Do you have other homes that have
recently been sold in this price range?
How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood?
What makes your agency unique?
The two biggest financial decisions you
will make in your lifetime are buying and
selling a home. Protect your investment
and peace of mind by choosing the best
and most trustworthy real estate agency
you can find.

HOW TO

create a custom piece of jewelry

J
ewelry is such an important part
of our lives. It marks milestones,
like birthdays and anniversaries. It solidifies commitments and
marriages. It can even help us to deal
with the loss of a loved one. Jewelry
represents much more than the metals
and stones its created from.
Because it is so personal, people
often want to create something completely unique and original: something
that captures and symbolizes all of the
emotion that jewelry represents. We
can offer that, in a custom designed
and created piece of jewelry.
1. Dream it think about what
you want your finished piece to represent: what you want it to look like.
2. Tell us about it explain to our
staff what youre looking for: metal
choices, stones to be included (perhaps
those that belonged to a loved one),
elements that you love, and those that
you dont care for.
3. Sketch it our master goldsmith will draw some color renderings
of what your piece will look like, and
can provide some different options for
the design.
4. Carve it our goldsmith will
carve the agreed upon design, from
wax.
5. Try it he sets the stones into
the wax so you can try the piece on
and make any necessary changes.
6. Cast it the jeweler then makes
a mold from the wax, then casts the
mold in the metal of your choice.
7. Set it he sets the stones
according to your wishes.
8. Polish it he does all of the
polish, finish and cleaning of the item.
9. Wear it you get to wear the
jewelry of your dreams and enjoy it for
a lifetime.

HOW TO

choose an auto repair shop

hether you are new in town or

you are just looking for a new
shop Bryan & Becki McGinnis
owners of Autovantage Service Center
want to offer some guidelines to help take
some of the anxiety out of your search:
Look for a repair facility before you
need one; you can make better decisions
when you are not rushed.
Ask friends, co-workers and associates for recommendations.
Search online for business reviews
and visit the shops Facebook page if one is
available. You can learn a lot about a business and its team by reading social media.
Look for a tidy, well-organized facility,
with vehicles in the parking lot equal in
value to your own and modern equipment
in the service bays. Consider whether the
facilitys image and level of professionalism
meet your needs.
Dont make your selection based
solely on location convenience.
Determine if the shop works on your
vehicle make and model or performs the
types of repairs you need.
Does the business have a sense of
community? Service awards, plaques for
civic involvement, and customer service
awards is a good indicator.
Professionally run establishments
will have a courteous, helpful staff. The
manager, service writer, or technician
should be willing to answer your questions
thoroughly.
Ask for the names of a few customers
as references. Call them.
Start with a small or minor job, such
as an oil change or tire rotation. Reward
good service with repeat business and more
complex work.
Ask about warranties Warranties
can vary greatly among shops.
If you travel often, look for an auto
repair shop that offers a nationwide war30 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

choose the right health club

here are many different reasons for

joining a Health Club.
For many people those reasons
include losing weight, relieving stress, restoring energy and vitality, and preventing
illness. Making the decision to join is the
critical first step in the process of achieving
your goals, but choosing the right one is
equally as important. Taking on a healthier
lifestyle means you have to make some
important changes in your mindset, your
lifestyle choices, and your day-to-day activities. To succeed you will need guidance,
support, and encouragement. Choose the
health club where you can find all three.
The right health club has a staff of
fitness professionals to serve you and the
equipment and programs to support your
mission. Some of the most important
factors to consider when selecting a Health
Club are:
Atmosphere (will your visits relieve stress
or add more?)
Cleanliness (is the club diligent about
keeping things clean and sanitary?)
Equipment (is it effective, efficient, and
well maintained?)
Classes and programs (is there a wide
variety of offerings?)
Staff (is the staff friendly, helpful, supportive and professionally certified?)
Value (will you be renting a treadmill,
or connecting into something that will
bring meaningful change to your life?)

their membership. If it feels right, then join
and be on the road to better health!

ease foot pain

A MAJOR CAUSE OF FOOT PAIN IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS

THERES A NEW DOCTOR IN TOWN

owerstep is a unique foot support
system that goes beyond foot
comfort. Powerstep orthotics
can relieve pain and even prevent it from
developing. Dr. Les Appel, a professional
podiatrist with over 25 years of experience,
has designed the entire line of Powerstep
products. The Powerstep orthotic line takes
foot comfort further than standard insoles
youre used to wearing. Powersteps unique
design provides real support and stability to
allow you to do the things you love to do,
pain-free.

DEFINITION
Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation
caused by excessive stretching of the
plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a broad
band of fibrous tissue which runs along the
bottom surface of the foot, attaching at

the bottom of the heel bone and extending

to the forefoot. When the plantar fascia
is excessively stretched, this can cause
plantar fasciitis, which can also lead to heel
pain, arch pain, and heel spurs.
CAUSE
Plantar Fasciitis often leads to heel pain,
34 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

heel spurs, and/or arch pain. The excessive

stretching of the plantar fascia that leads
to the inflammation and discomfort can be
caused by the following:
Over-pronation (flat feet) which
results in the arch collapsing upon weight
bearing
A foot with an unusually high arch
A sudden increase in physical activity
Excessive weight on the foot, usually
attributed to obesity or pregnancy
Improperly fitting footwear
Over-pronation (flat feet) is the leading
cause of plantar fasciitis. Over-pronation
occurs in the walking process, when a persons arch collapses upon weight bearing,
causing the plantar fascia to be stretched
away from the heel bone. With plantar
fasciitis, the bottom of your foot usually
hurts near the inside of the foot where the
heel and arch meet. The pain is often acute
either first thing in the morning or after a
long rest, because while resting the plantar
fascia contracts back to its original shape.
As the day progresses and the plantar

footwear
2. Stretch regularly
3. Preserve your arch with
strengthening exercises
4. Slowly increase physical activity
5. Ice and rest

fascia continues to be stretched, the pain

often subsides.
TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
The key for the proper treatment of
plantar fasciitis is determining what is
causing the excessive stretching of the
plantar fascia. When the cause is over-pronation (flat feet), an orthotic with rearfoot
posting and longitudinal arch support is an
effective device to reduce the over-pronation and allow the condition to heal. If you

have usually high arches, which can also

lead to plantar fasciitis, cushion the heel,
absorb shock and wear proper footwear
that will accommodate and comfort the
foot.
Other common treatments include
stretching exercises, plantar fasciitis night
splints, wearing shoes that have a cushioned heel to absorb shock, and elevating
the heel with the use of a heel cradle or
heel cup. Heel cradles and heel cups provide extra comfort, cushion the heel, and
reduce the amount of shock and shear
forces placed during everyday activities.
Every time your foot strikes the
ground, the plantar fascia is stretched.
You can reduce the strain and stress on
the plantar fascia by following these
simple instructions: Avoid running on
hard or uneven ground, lose any excess
weight, and wear shoes and orthotics that support your arch to prevent
over-stretching of the plantar fascia.
If problem persists, consult your foot
doctor.

HOW
TO
choose an orthopedic surgeon

eciding to undergo elective

surgery is a big deal, still, millions
of Americans undergo orthopedic
surgery each year. Whether your joint pain
is caused by arthritis, injury, or normal
wear and tear, knowing when its the right
time and what the right procedure is can
be challenging. Finding the right doctor
and surgical team can be even tougher. An
orthopedic surgeon can help heal injuries to shoulders, hands, joints, knees and
other areas of the musculoskeletal system.
Whether you have a minor sports injury or
need a joint replacement, these surgeons
can put you on the right path to recovery.
Finding the right orthopedic surgeon
is essential. It takes time, persistence and
research. Here are some tips to help you
find the best surgeon for your needs.

RECOMMENDATIONS
A good starting point for a solid
recommendation is your family practice
physician; in fact, many insurance plans
require an approval from your primary care
provider to see an orthopedic specialist.
Its ok to ask questions, understand why
your doctor recommends this specialist for
you, and ask about the outcomes of other
previously recommended patients. You can
also talk to friends who have had similar
conditions or have experience with orthopedic specialists.
It is a good idea to research your particular injury. Different surgeons may offer
different types of treatments or techniques.
If you believe one particular treatment may
be better for you, you will want to find a
surgeon who offers that.
Once you have a short list of possibilities, research those physicians. And,
perhaps most importantly, find out which
physicians will be covered by your insurance plan. Research their online profiles,
call their office, or schedule a consultation
36 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

well versed in the latest technology. Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures arent just the latest buzzwords in
orthopedic care; these advanced procedures can also offer quicker recovery and
more natural feeling joint replacement, all
with smaller incisions and less scarring.
Not all patients are good candidates
for these newer procedures, but selecting
a physician who is committed to ongoing
education and advancing technology, will
allow you to explore all of your options.

to learn more. Find out how many procedures they perform each month - if they
do very low numbers of your recommended
procedure, you may want to find out why.
The more experience they have with your
particular condition, the more likely you are
to have a successful outcome.
PHILOSOPHY
The most important factor when selecting a surgeon is that you feel comfortable. Even though all qualified doctors
go through similar training, they dont all
share the same philosophy when it comes
to medical treatment.
Some surgeons prefer to exhaust all
other options such as physical therapy,

Publication of the Auburn Journal

dietary or lifestyle changes before theyre

willing to commit to surgery. Others may
think its wiser to do the surgery before a
problem gets worse.
When you first meet an orthopedic
surgeon make sure you understand the recommended treatment plan, including the
recovery plan post-surgery; as well as the
role he or she will play in your treatment
moving forward. Ask the surgeon questions
and see if he or she answers them thoroughly. The right doctor should listen and
be attentive to your needs.
FULL SPECTRUM
With so many treatment options, its
important that you find a physician who is

HOSPITAL PRIVILEGES
Find out where each surgeon operates.
Different hospitals have different levels
of technology and accommodations for
their patients, and youll want to have the
procedure done at a hospital that is both
convenient and fully equipped to meet
your needs. Some surgeons operate only
in a hospital operating room while others
may prefer to do outpatient procedures
at a surgery center. Often, where your
surgery is performed will depend on what
your insurance will authorize. Ask these
questions ahead of time.
Keep in mind that good quality care
doesnt have to mean traveling too far.
There are many benefits of choosing a
doctor close to home. Logistically it will
make your life easier. Long drives and
overnight stays are not ideal when you are
living with an injury or recovering from
surgery. Having your doctor nearby may
make you more likely to seek follow up
care when necessary. And it will be easier
for your surgeon to coordinate your postop care and rehabilitation if he or she is
local.
Remember, you shouldnt make a
choice and move forward with surgery
until you feel completely comfortable with
the surgeon, technique, and procedure.
Your future health depends on it.

HOW TO
E

get a pilots license

arning your private pilots license is

by far one of the most rewarding
achievements and one of the most
exciting experiences youll ever have in
your lifetime.
What many people dont realize is that
getting your pilots license is much easier
and more attainable that you might think,
and flying isnt just for airline pilots. Besides commercial airports like Sacramento
International, there are plenty small general aviation airports scattered of all across
the Sacramento Valley and Sierra Foothills.
There is one in Lincoln, Grass Valley, Cameron Park, and more.
General aviation refers to small, single-engine aircraft (and a few other categories of aircraft).
As a private pilot, you can go as far as
your fuel tanks will carry you. You can fly
across the country, from California to New
York, or outside of the country to Mexico
or Canada. There are also a lot of activities
that aviation allows you to do. You can
land on Folsom Lake in an aircraft on floats
and go for a swim before flying home. You
can fly to Columbia Airport and camp on
the side of the runway for a few nights and
fly home in the morning. You can even fly
across Canada into Alaska and land on the
beaches and backcountry strips, go hunting
or fishing, and head back to the U.S. when
youve had your fill.
Hopefully this has shown you how
versatile the world of aviation is for those
with their private pilots license. So now
youre probably wondering how you can
get a license yourself.
The FAA requires that you have a minimum of 40 flight hours, but realistically,

38 HOW TO GUIDE 2016

Publication of the Auburn Journal

it takes most people close to 65 hours of

flight time to become proficient enough
to pass the checkride at the end of their
training.
The FAA also requires that you take a
written test. Thats why we offer a Private
Pilot Ground School where you will study
and learn about aerodynamics, aircraft
engines, weather, plotting cross-country
courses and more. You can do your Ground
School at the same time that you do your
flight training; in fact, we encourage this.
Flying will give you a practical understanding of the knowledge you will be
studying in your books.
You will also need to have a medical
certificate much like what is required for
commercial truck drivers.
During your flight training, we will teach
you how to take-off and land, climb and
descend in the air, recover from stalls and
unusual attitudes, and fly by instruments
in case you accidentally find yourself in the
clouds.
We will also teach you different flight
maneuvers like flying in an S shape, flying
a circle around a point and flying a rectangular course. You even get to fly at night.
Lastly, you will learn how to navigate to
airports 50 nautical miles away or farther
and while youre there, you may just stop
and get a bite to eat with your instructor!
Once you have mastered your skills in
flying and in talking to other pilots in the
air and to air traffic control, you will schedule your checkride. This is the test at the
very end where you show what you know
and when you pass, you will be a licensed
private pilot ready to take on the world of
aviation and explore the boundless sky!

get your pond healthy

HEALTHY PONDS ARE GREAT FOR FISHING, MUSING EVEN IRRIGATION!

onds have been part of Auburn

resident Dana Andrews life for
decades. For many years we lived
on a big property 300 acres in Placer
County, We had ponds and always had drag
lines coming out. I ended up buying equipment to clean our ponds. Then someone
saw me doing that and asked if Id clean
theirs .
It soon developed into a business,
now called DLD Service. We basically do
anything that has to do with ponds, creeks
and waterways, Andrews said. We build
ponds. We clean ponds. We clear creeks.
We install irrigation systems (connected to)
ponds.
His focus is earthen ponds at least 30
feet by 80 feet in diameter that usually
have some features a pump or dock or
they are used for fish.
Many of our customers have ponds so
they can fish and enjoy the environment
around it, he said.
When planning a new pond, he goes to
the site to see where it will be installed,
then produces a custom drawing (or several) of designs that fit the space.
I have to know what the customer
wants and then will (plan) something the
ground and land will allow, he said. We
dont usually do square, rectangular or
round ponds. We use an undulating look to
give shapes that look unique. That unique
look also extends to the levees. We give
them almost a golf course look, he said.
They looked tucked in and have very gradual shorelines usually a slight mounding
to give them a natural look.
Cost to install a pond ranges from
$8,500 for the most basic to several hundred thousand, he said. Extras like a dock,
bridge or water feature add to the cost.
He estimates he has installed or worked

Take care of your pond and it will reward
you as a beautiful addition to the landscape. But neglect it, and you will quickly
have problems. Overgrowth is the most
common complaint. What Andrews sees
most frequently are cattails, Eurasian water
milfoil and mesquite fern (also known
as azolla). Eurasian milfoil can grow at
incredible depths, he said. When infestation takes over, it looks like evergreens in
your pond. An infestation of azolla turns
the pond red. It will grow right across the
top and completely close off the surface,
he said. It is a fern that multiplies very
quickly and within a few days. In a week
the pond can be completely covered. Often
the invasion come from downstream or is
carried by waterfowl. It gets stuck to them
and as they go from one water source to
another, it spreads, he said.
There are two ways to treat severe
infestation mechanical and chemical.
As everyone is supposed to in California,
we basically try to use as little as we can
in chemicals,?he said. If there is another

Publication of the Auburn Journal

way to treat the problem, we do that. Our

last line of defense is chemicals.
Aeration and keeping the water moving
are very important to a ponds health.
Many are not connected to a creek, so
they have irrigation water, Andrews said.
We bring it from (ditchwater) or a pipe
source. In some cases ponds do not have
any incoming or outgoing (water source).
Evaporation is substantial. Even a small
pond loses thousands of gallons of water a
day to evaporation. So you have to have a
way to replenish it.
For pond clearing, Andrews brings out
the drag line to scrape the sediment, and
says he doesnt know of anyone else in
Placer County that still uses that method.
It is kind of old school, but has a
distinct advantage, he said. To be able to
remove the sediment and work underwater
without hydraulics, thats key because todays modern equipment is all hydraulics. If
you have a hose fail (with hydraulics), you
have turned it into an environmental disaster because youve just dumped gallons
of oil into the water source. With (our drag
line), that risk does not exist.

One of his recent projects was restoring

a two-acre pond for Loomis resident Doug
English. It was fully infested with milfoil
and cattails and the water was stagnant,
Andrews said. The aquatics eco-system
had fallen off. ... It was so green. If you
didnt look close, you wouldnt have known
it was a pond.
Andrews crew dredged it, treated it and
added an aeration system. English describes
Andrews as pretty much a genius.
It isnt just ponds he knows. Hes also a
specialist at everything outdoors irrigation, landscaping, wildlife, English said.
We had a beaver issue on our pond and he
told us how to take care of that. He built
bridges and understands aerators (which
draw in and recirculate the water). Its good
for the fish and for the health of the pond.
You dont raise fish; you raise the water
in the pond. And he understands that.
Englishs now pristine pond is stocked with
bass, blue gill and catfish. But it was an
eyesore when he first saw it. The pond was
terrible and most buyers would walk away
after seeing it, he said. I didnt really
know what I was getting into, but I knew
it could be cleaned. After research, I knew
(Andrews) was the person to do it the right
way. Theres a step-by-step process to
make sure the pond stays healthy and you
dont kill the fish.
My wife probably had other ideas, but
the most important thing to me was the
pond. Everything else was second. That was
the first thing we worked on and everything else was second. Since then, weve
put in an acre of zinfandel grapes.
He helped us on that as well. Hes a
genius with anything outdoors. Hes been
right about everything he told me would
happen. Everything Ive run past him hes
always been correct on.

HOW TO GUIDE 2016 41

HOW TO
A

ging people are people in transition. Ideally our elders will ask for
our help during difficult times, but
as family members have learned, this may
not happen. In fact, aging parents may be
in denial about their need for assistance,
or they may decline offers for help because
they feel ashamed and powerless.
RESPECT YOUR LOVED ONES
SITUATION AND FEELINGS
Aging parents may not feel ready to
relinquish control over aspects of their lives
to younger or healthier relatives.
Aging spouses often have difficulty
admitting that they cannot care for their
spouse around-the-clock without time to
themselves to rest and rejuvenate. This can
cause feelings of guilt that are compounded by the sadness they feel at the decline
of their spouses.
Most elderly people will, at some
point, face major losses that can feel
overwhelming to their sense of self and
well-being. Remember that earlier in their
lives they were productive, healthy, and
independent. Being compassionate, asking
questions, listening to their opinions, and
validating their feelings will go a long way
toward nurturing the relationship between
well-meaning relatives and their elderly
loved ones.
RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS THAT HELP IS
NEEDED
Sometimes the signs that help is needed are evident. Such situations may include
death of a caregiver, recovering from
stroke or heart attack, recuperating from
chemotherapy, managing chronic diseases
such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinsons,
and returning home after hospitalization
due to illness or injury. If you have an
aging relative in your life who appears to
be living well on her own, remain on alert

for changes. Things may seem normal on

the outside. Decline can be gradual, and
changes can be barely noticeable at first.
Sharpen your observational skills, and look
for patterns of consistent neglect within
the following contexts:
Basic tasks: difficulty walking,
dressing, eating, cooking, or managing
medications.
Hygiene: infrequent bathing, unusually sloppy appearance, foul body and/or
mouth odor.
Responsibilities: unpaid bills, unfilled
prescriptions, low food supply, unkept
home.
Health: weight loss, fatigue, bruises,
insomnia, physical complaints.
Isolation: lack of interest in outside
friendships or activities, little access to
transportation.
Attitude: sadness, paranoia, refusal

to communicate, a recent crisis.

Cognitive functioning: consistent
forgetfulness, confusion, loss of reasoning
skills.
OPEN UP DIALOGUE WITH ELDERLY
FAMILY MEMBERS
When the signs of senior care needs
start to appear, it is important to keep an
open mind and not make assumptions as to
why the senior might be experiencing difficulties. If it is decided that in fact help is
needed for your loved one, begin a conversation with your loved gently and honestly.
Open the conversation with what you have
noticed. Use I statements to share your
concerns, and honor your loved ones feeling and opinions. You might say something
like, Lately, Ive noticed that it seems hard
for you to keep up with the housework the
way you like. Im worried that you might

CONSIDER THE BEST CARE OPTIONS

FOR YOUR LOVED ONE
Options for elder care include assisted
living, board and care, skilled nursing, living
with relatives, and in-home care. Consider
your loved ones personality and needs as
well as his or her financial situation when
choosing care. Generally, in-home care
leads to a higher satisfaction with life, even
when frailty is a factor. According to the
AARP, nearly 90% of people over the age of
65 want to stay in their homes as long as
possible.
Home care, done correctly, allows dignity, independence and maximum comfort
for the care recipient. According to the
Alvalere Research Study (2008) patients
heal more quickly and comfortably at
home versus in a hospital or nursing home
setting. Home care is individualized for
each persons needs and preferences. Home
care services include transportation, meal
preparation, personal care, house-keeping,
medication reminders, companionship, and
assistance with exercise and activities.
One can never underestimate the benefit
of the familiarity of home, whether that be
just enjoying a favorite chair or savoring
the daily cup of tea near a familiar window.

call Help at Home Senior Care. We will be
happy to evaluate the situation, walk you
