the growth of Islamic finance in the
country and will support moves to
sustain and further develop the sector.
Central Bank of Kenya chairman Muhammad Nyaoga lauded the development of
Islamic finance saying the government
recognizes its positive contribution to the
economy.
We are open to supporting Islamic products that deepen the market as they enhances financial inclusion in the society, he
said recently at an iftar dinner that brought
together practitioners in the Islamic finance
sector.
Speaking at the same event, the chairman
of the Insurance Regulatory Abdirahim Haithar Abdi said while there has been a steady
growth in Islamic finance in the country, he
called for more awareness programmes
which will increase the uptake of Islamic
banking and insurance. There is still misunderstanding about Islamic banking and
Insurance both among Muslims and nonMuslims and this need to be addressed,
he said.

responsibility and put much emphasis in the teaching of
the hadith and seerah so as to provide adequate Islamic
knowledge for Muslim children,'' said Chancellor of the

Sheikh Muhammad further called on Madrasa teachers
to prevail on their students to learn Islamic disciplines

DA'WAH

Ramadhan 26,1437/July 01, 2016

Rulings on Zakat Al-Fitr and errors when paying Zakat Al-Fitr

Zakat-al-Fitr is charity given to the poor
at the end of the fasting in the Islamic
holy month of Ramadhan. The word Fitr
means the same as Iftar, breaking a fast
and it comes from the same root word as
Futoor which means breakfast.
It is intended to purify Muslims from sin
committed during the fasting period and
hasten the acceptance of fast.
Importance
According to the Quran, He who purified
himself shall prosperremembering his
Lords name and praying. Q. 87: 14-15.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
also supported this by saying, on the authority of Ibn Umar that he (Muhammad)
made obligatory the payment of Zakatul-Fitr, Saa of dates (4 Mud) of barely or
grape on the slave, freeborn, male, female, young and old among the Muslims.
The significant role played by Zakat in the
circulation of wealth within the Islamic society is also played by the Zakat al-Fitr.
However, in the case of Sadaqat al-Fitr,
each individual is required to calculate
how much charity is due from himself and
his dependents and go into the community
in order to find those who deserve such
charity.
Thus, Zakat al-Fitr plays a very important
role in the development of the bonds of
community. The rich are obliged to come in
direct contact with the poor, and the poor
are put in contact with the extremely poor.
This contact between the various levels of
society helps to build real bonds of brotherhood and love within the Islamic community and trains those who have, to be
generous to those who do not have.
Benefits of paying
Zakat al-Fitr was legislated by the Prophet (Peace be upon him) in the month of
Shaban of the second year of Hijrah. It is
meant to play two roles:
1. Purification of the fasting Muslim from
whatever unbecoming character such as
vain talk and unnecessary wrongdoings
he might have committed during the fasting month.
2. Feeding of the poor and needy so that
they may not beg (at least on Eid day).
Classification
Zakat al-Fitr is a duty which is wajib (required) of every Muslim, whether male or
female, minor or adult as long as he/she
has the means to do so.
According to Islamic tradition (Sunnah),
Ibn Umar said that Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him) made Zakat al-Fitr
compulsory on every slave, freeman,
male, female, young and old among the
Muslims; one Saa` of dried dates or one
Saa` of barley. [Sahih Bukhari)
The head of the household may pay the
required amount for the other members.
Abu Saeed al-Khudree said: On behalf of
our young and old, free men and slaves,
we used to take out during Allahs Mes-

sengers (peace be upon him) lifetime one

Saa` of grain, cheese or raisins. [Sahih
Muslim)
But unfortunately, our community makes
some basic errors in the payment of Zakat
Al-Fitr that must be clarified.
Error one: Paying at Eid salah
Some people go to Eid prayers and drop
money into the donation box thinking that
they have paid their Zakat Al-Fitr. No, Zakat
al-Fitr, which is food, must be in the hands
of the needy family BEFORE Eid prayer. If
someone goes to Eid prayer and pays then
it is GUARANTEED that the money will
NOT arrive on time. And thus the person
paying is sinful for having missed the payment of Zakat al-Fitr. May Allah forgive us.
Error two: Not paying
Yes, as simple as this error is, it is HARAM to skip the payment of Zakat Al-Fitr.
EVERYONE must pay Zakat Al-Fitr, every
member of the household. So if you have
8 people in your house, Zakat Al-Fitr must
be paid x 8, even if the youngest member
is just a few days old.
Error three: Confusing Zakat Al-Fitr
with Zakat ul-Maal
We are talking about Zakat al-Fitr here
(think "Iftar", i.e. Ramadhan). Zakat AlMaal (Maal literally means wealth), is the
Zakah due on ones money and that
could be due any time during the year depending on when it was due.
Error four: Giving money instead of
food
Although some scholars have allowed
giving money instead of food, the spirit of
Zakat Al-Fitr is to give food to the needy
of the community, NOT money. (One can
give money to the local masjid in charge
and they can give food with that money in
shaa Allah).
The Companion of the Prophet, Abu Sa`eed
al-Khudree, radi Allahu 'anhu, said, "In the
Prophet's time, we used to give it (ZakatalFitr) as a saa` of food, dried dates, barley,
raisins or dried cheese". [Bukhari]
Error five: Giving one's Zakah al-Fitr to
a charitable building project
Some people mistakenly give their Zakah
Al-Fitr to a charitable building project: like
the building of a Masjid, or Islamic school.
There is a difference of opinion on this issue, but suffice it to say that the spirit of
Zakah Al-Fitr is that the needy should have
plentiful food on Eid.
All eight types of recipients of Zakah mentioned in the Quran are HUMANS, not
"building projects."
Error six: Giving Zakat Al-Fitr to nonMuslims
Charity is given to both Non-Muslims and
Muslims. However, Zakah al-Fitr charity is
something exclusive to the MUSLIM poor
and needy. Hence, one could not give
Zakah Al-Fitr to any needy person on the
street. "Regular" charity can be given to
them, but not Zakah Al-Fitr.

Error seven: Delaying distribution

Sometimes Masjids might collect Zakah
Al-Fitr money and then put it in a bank. It
doesn't reach the needy for months and
months. The correct method is to give
Zakah Al-Fitr immediately when it is due.

The Hijab fashion industry

Its place in Islam

WOMEN

Sana Gul Waseem

I have never seen hijab in fashion and hijab fashion to
this extent in my life. When I started wearing the hijab, I
remember being looked at with curiosity by many people
who just couldnt figure out what was that thing on my
head in a sweltering 55-degree Celsius heat!
The only people who understood who I was (i.e a foreigner Muslim) were the shop owners in Janpath, New Delhi,
India as that area is frequented by foreign nationals and
many of them are from Iran and other Arab countries.
It was hilarious when they would talk amongst themselves
in Hindi to determine how much to raise the price of what
I was looking to buy. And the look on their faces when I
replied in perfect Hindi? Priceless, I tell you.
Well, 9/11 changed it all for me. I remember somebody
referring to me and my friends as Taliban in Goa when
I went there with my class on a college trip. It was pretty
embarrassing, but well, the youth doesnt care. Does it?
But, Alhamdulillah, All praise is to Allah, the hijab has
come a long way since that time.
Now, where ever I go, from the most crowded places in
India and overseas to the tiny remote island off the shore
of Canada, I see heads covered with hijab moving alongside blondes and brunettes and purple streaked heads
and every other color in between.
Another dramatic change that I see around me is a mushrooming of a hijab fashion industry that was non-existent
till some 10 years back. Now, hijab fashion experts are
burning the midnight oil in trying to blend the latest trends
in fashion with modest Islamic attire. They are trying
their very best to prove to non-Muslims and Muslims alike
that well, hijabis are as trendy, cool, hip, smart and fashionable as those who dont wear hijab.
All you have to do is type hijab fashion in the Google
search bar and well, you will be bombarded with blogs,
websites, articles, photos and pages dedicated to making
you look hip and happening with a Hijab! And, of course,
let me not forget to mention the endless list of tutorials on
YouTube on how to wear the hijab. They even have tutorials on the type of makeup that goes with hijab!
Phew! all that hard work man!
But the question is Is it all really necessary? Do we really need a hijab fashion industry? Isnt it actually pulling
us away from the basic message of hijab, which is covering ourselves in a way that is not attracting attention?
When a woman wears a beautiful scarf that compliments
her face and wears layers of makeup, is she actually fulfilling the requirements of hijab that were set for us by Allah and His Messenger peace be upon him? O Prophet!
Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the
believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes
or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they
should be known (as free respectable women) so as not
to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful (Al-Ahzab, 33:59)
According to the hadith in Bukhari, May Allah have mercy

week When Allah revealed the words
on the
Muhaajir
and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their
bodies, faces, necks and bosoms), they tore the thickest
of their aprons (a kind of garment) and covered their faces
with them.
Please, hear me out here. I am not against fashion, dressing up or makeup. A woman needs to dress up, look pretty, wear nice clothes and jewelry but not for public display.
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from
looking at forbidden things),and not to show off their
adornment except only that which is apparent (like both

Ramadhan 26,1437/July 01, 2016

The Friday Bulletin

Aishah Ahmed
Fatimah looked at the calendar. Only
3 days left, she said to herself with a
heavy sigh.
Yes. Only a few days before the month
of blessings and forgiveness will depart.
Only a few days before Ramadhan is
over. None of us knows if our fasts and
ibadah have been accepted by Allah
and the question remains unanswered
till the Day of Judgment. In spite of
this, there is an excitement peeking out
from the corners of our heart. Yes! Eid is
round the corner! It is a gift from Allah to
us for one month of nonstop and rigorous ibadah that we have done. But this
gift demands a duty from us: obedience
and worship in celebration too. As Ibn
Rajab rahimahullaah said, Eid is not for
the one who wears new clothes. Eid is
for the one whose obedience rises. Eid
is not for the one with beautiful clothes
and fine means of transport. Eid is for
the one whose sins are forgiven. [alLataif, p. 371]
The question is, how? How do we please
Allaah in our celebrations? You will find
the answer in the following practical
ways, in shaa Allaah.
1. Tahajjud:
Before we even think of giving an excuse
for tahajjud, let us ponder upon the following hadith Qudsi: Allah says, I have
prepared for My righteous servants what
no eye has seen and no ear has heard,
nor has it occurred to the human heart.
(Bukhari, Muslim)
Allah has something more in store for
His pious slaves which is not within our
imagination! But how do we attain this
bounty?
Allah also says, They arise from [their]
beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear
and aspiration, and from what We have
provided them, they spend. And no soul
knows what has been hidden for them of
comfort for eyes as reward for what they
used to do. (Surah As-Sajdah, (32):1617)
What more incentive do we need? Make
tahajjud an addiction and be among
those described in the verse!
2. Dont Skip Fajr Salaah:
I need to go for Eid Salaah later, so let
me sleep now.
I just woke up for tahajjud!
I will offer Fajr at home today.
Allah is Merciful, He will forgive me if I
only skip it for a day.
Have we heard these common excuses
before?
The 5 daily prayers are fardh brothers
and sisters! If we are searching for excuses to avoid Fajr, then we should better describe ourselves as hypocrites as
the Prophet peace be upon him said that
the hardest prayer for the hypocrites is
Fajr and Isha. (Bukhari).
3. Follow the Sunnah:
There are many practices that the

YOUTH

Ramadhan 26,1437/July 01, 2016

Redefine fun this Eid

Prophet peace be upon him observed once
the moon for Eid had been sighted:
1. It is mustahabb to recite takbeer during
the night of Eid from sunset on the last day
of Ramadhan until the Imam comes to lead
the prayer.
2. Eat an odd number of dates before leaving for the Eid Salaah just as the Prophet
peace be upon him did. (Saheeh, At-Tirmidhi)
3. Dress and look your best. Women
should observe proper hijaab when going
for Salah or outside. Dont begin your Eid
by being a source of fitnah!
4. Zakaat al-fitr has to be given on Eid before the Eid Salaah. This is binding on every Muslim. The prescribed amount is 1 saa
of the staple food of ones area on behalf of
every member of the household. (Bukhari)
5. It is preferable to go from one route to
Eid Salaah and return on a different route
as done by the Prophet. (Bukhari)
4. Eid Salaah:
The Prophet peace be upon him used to
take his wives and daughters to the two
Eids. Umm Atiyah said: We were ordered
to go out with the single and menstruating women to the two Eids in order to witness the good and the supplications of the
Muslims. The menstruating women though
would stay away from the prayer area.
(Bukhari, Muslim)
Sisters, please dont dress up like a bride
to the masjid! If you are going to the masjid
to obey the commands of Allah by disobeying Him in your attire, what use will your
obedience be other than adding negative
points to your kiraman katibin?
5. Avoid mixed gatherings:
Oh, we are just relatives! There is no harm
in us being together! There is. Because
knows and we dont. Allah, in His Wisdom
has given us a precise list of our mahrams
and non mahrams (Surah Nur, (24):31) If
your family is hosting an Eid party, make
sure that the sisters and brothers have
separate rooms to sit in, each room having different hosts to attend to them. If you
have been invited to a mixed gathering
which you cannot avoid, occupy a room/
space where there are no members of the
opposite sex. Inform the host gently that
you are not comfortable mixing with the
opposite gender. By this, you have done
a deed to please Allah and a little bit of
dawah too!
6. Dont skip Salaah:
We get so busy celebrating that we forget
that the time for Salah is due. When Allah
did not excuse the warriors on the battle
field from Salaah, how can we think of skipping it? If you have planned an outing for
Eid, make sure you select a spot that has a
masjid nearby. Schedule your plans for the
day around the Salaah timings. You could
also set alarms on your phone for each Salaah so that even if Shaytaan causes you
to forget, you have a back up ready.
7. Involving in haram activities:
Once Ramadhan is over, the entertain-

ment industry comes out from the cupboards!

Allah did not restrict obedience and ibadah to
Him for a month alone.
If you were successful in refraining from all
sorts of entertainment and haraam activities
in Ramadhan, you can easily continue it further. Allah made it easy for us to stay away
from it and this makes it incumbent upon us to
show gratitude to Him by refraining from them
forever. Remember, Eid is not an excuse to
disobey Allah but an occasion to thank Him for
His endless bounties.
Follow these few simple steps and feel a
sense of satisfaction of having celebrated the
gift from Allah in accordance with His pleasure.

palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil,

their adornment except to their husbands, or
their fathers, or their husbands fathers, or
their sons, or their husbands sons, or their
brothers or their brothers sons, or their sisters sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their
sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom
their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigor, or small children who
have no sense of feminine sex. And let them
not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they
hide of their adornment. And all of you beg
Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you
may be successful (An Nur 24:31)
I know that sometimes, it is hard not to feel
pain or hurt because of the looks or comments
that come our way when we try to dress up as
per the rules set by Allah. After all we are human, arent we? At such times, these hijab
fashion posts seem like a gift from Allah so
that we can copy their ideas and look cool
and shut these people up.
Right? No, wrong!
This is not right. As Muslims, our sole purpose
in life is to worship Allah as Allah says,
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. (Adh-Dhariyat 51:57)
When we seek help in these fashion blogs
for advice on how to wear hijab that actually
makes us look more attractive just to quieten these people, we are moving away from
His mercy. Allah has asked us to seek help
through patience and prayer. We dont need
to resort to hijab fashion posts to help us look
beautiful.
We need to move closer to our religion and
look for His approval about the way we do our
hijab. At the end of the day, it is only Him we
seek to please and expect our reward from.
Of course, we will follow the fashion trends
and fads and go shopping and have fun while
doing it (please dont forget the dua for entering the market) but not for public display.
There is nothing wrong in looking neat, clean,
tidy and smart. But there is definitely wrong
in wearing things which attract attention while
in public.

RAMADHAN

The Friday Bulletin

Ramadhan 26,1437/July 01, 2016

Just few days of Ramadhan left You can still do it!

Nasmira Firdous
So, you started your Ramadhan with a
bang, and lost the enthusiasm and zeal to
carry with the same energy after a week or
so? Fret not. You are not alone. Many people start off Ramadhan with lofty ambitions
and goals, only to find themselves slacking
off mid-way due to various reasons ranging from not planning ahead to losing the
motivation and drive to continue. If you are
struggling with decreased motivation and
want to make the best of Ramadhan in the
last few days, read on.
Its never too late
Remember, Ramadhan isnt over until its
actually over! Ten days is a lot of time for
you to make up for what youve missed.
Since the last ten days have a prestigious
position during the blessed month (because laylatul qadr could fall on any of the
odd nights) it is increasingly essential for
you to focus on what you can do, rather
than brooding over what has already happened. Convince your mind and heart not
to lose hope, because Allah hasnt lost
hope in you. He believes you can, so you
can!
Refine your intentions:
If you are planning to speed up your process of completing your goals during the
last ten days to show off to your friends
or family, you are fundamentally going
WRONG. Always do your deeds with the
right intentions and that involves beginning
a deed with the intention to please Allah
*alone*. Remember, you will be rewarded
for your righteous intentions even if you
are not able to complete the task, so purify your intentions and renew them every
single time.
Dua and repentance:
Dont slacken off because your 20 days
went wrong. No! If Allah has allowed you to
wake up during the last few days of Ramadhan, it means that He trusts that you *will*
raise your standards and make the best
use of the month. Make dua as much as
you can, whenever you can. Be sincere
and let your heart and mind feel every single letter you say. Dua is only as strong as
you use it. Use it well. An overdose never
hurts! Additionally, nothing increases the
quality of your life like repentance does.
Quality over quantity:
As with anything, quality always takes
precedence over quantity. Whats the point
of indulging in speed reading the glorious Quran if your mind and heart is heedless? Imagine having completed the whole
Quran and your heart is still not moved by

Allah sees who is best in deeds, not necessarily those whove done the most number
of deeds that are lacking in ihsaan, consistency or purity of intentions. Allah loves
deeds that are consistent, even if they are
small.
So, set up goals that are consistent and
feasible, and most importantly, remember
to continue doing them even after Ramad-

the end goal of Ramadhan in mind.
Involve others too:
Its always nice to have company that
would motivate you to reach your goals
and pursue them with zeal and enthusiasm when you feel down or out. Addition-

So dont be selfish and limit your performance of good deeds to yourself. Encourage and push your family members and

you for every act of worship they do because of your persistence. Imagine getting a huge mountain of good deeds just
because you gave others an encouraging

Scholars on the despicable airport bombing in Turkey

Dr. Yassir Qadhi
May Allah protect the people
of Turkey! May
those who died
be
accepted
as martyrs and
may their families be given
comfort and solace!
It is sickening how terrorists use religion
to justify such carnage, especially in these
last days of Ramadan.
I have never been able to understand the
logic of terrorism. How does randomly killing tourists at one of the busiest airports
in the world gain *any* sympathy for your
cause, no matter how legitimate your
cause might be? Such attacks actually
make the world even more callous to the
sufferings of those people in whose names
terrorism occurs.
That is why knowledge always calms you
down and prevents you from acting irrationally. Even a cursory look at history
shows that killing other people's innocents
harms your own cause. The Palestinian
secular movements tried terrorism as a
tactic throughout the 60s and 70s, and we
all know that it didn't help their (legitimate)
cause for freedom in the slightest. If anything, it further exacerbated the stereotype
of the 'Palestinian terrorist' that the media
loves to invoke to this day.
If terrorists won't learn from the Quran and
the Seerah, they should at least learn from
history: killing other people's innocents,
and massacring women and children haphazardly, doesn't bring about sympathy for
your grievances, no matter how legitimate
those grievances might be.
Humanity has struck humanity yet again. The series of
deadly explosions in Turkey
has left us speechless. Islam
has no place for terrorism at
all. Massacring innocent people does not justify your reasons in any way. Allah says
in Surah Mai'da, that whoever kills a person unjustly, it
is as though he has killed all
humanity! And as has always

Imam Zaid Shakir

Once again, the
filthy
scourge
of suicide murder has reared
its
despicable
head, this time
in Istanbul, Turkey.
Innocent
people are once
again the target
of brainwashed
homicidal
lunatics, one of
whom was captured on film
dispatching himself to Hell, the destination
our Prophet (peace upon him) has promised anyone who commits suicide.
This hellacious wave of demonic violence
has become a pathetic norm in the Muslim
world. As I mentioned recently, I will never
tire of condemning it.
Suicide is haram and its perpetrator is
promised Hell. Murder is haram and its
perpetrator is promised Hell. What else
can we do, the angry critic of these words
will ask? Others will add, they bomb and
kill our innocent people.
For starters we can pray, learn our religion
and follow the prophetic discouragement
about becoming angry, La Taghdab! Anger
and rage are the product of an ideology.
Restraint, forbearance, pardoning, educating and service are the products of a religion. Islam is a religion, not an ideology.
None of those people murdered in Istanbul has ever killed a Muslim. In all likelihood, most of the victims were themselves
Muslims. Will the polemicists who attribute
these crimes to Islam tweet that these murderers hate Islam? If they were to do so,

Dr. Bilal Phillips

been inaccurately stated, the
history of Islam never encouraged haphazard killing and
destruction.
May Allah send peace and
tranquility upon the people of
Turkey and recompense them
with better. May He protect
them, fill them with patience
and grant the dead the reward
of martyrs. Ameen

Ramadhan 26,1437/July 01, 2016

The do and don'ts of the Eid

The celebration of Eid is a joyous occasion. We do, however, need to make sure
we do not fall in innovations, prohibitions,
or actions that will take away the reward
we gained during the blessed days of
Ramadhan. The devil, having been held
captive for 29 or 30 days during Ramadhan, is released the maghrib before the
Eid. Therefore, it is imperative for one to
be on guard against the whisperings of the
devil. The following is a list of preferred actions as well as actions one should avoid.
Desirable actions to be done on the day
of Eid:
1) Eating dates after Salatul Fajr and before the Eid prayer, as the Prophet sallah
allahu alayhi wa salam did, symbolizing
the breaking of his fast.
In Eid Al-Adha (Eid of the hajj), based on
the sunnah, one does not eat until they
sacrifice, unlike Eid Al-Fitr (Eid of Ramadhan).
2) Bathing and wearing ones best attire
before going to the Eid prayer.
The Prophet Sallah allahu alayhi wa salam
had a special garment that he wore for
the performance of the Jumah and Eid
prayers.
3) Walking to the masjid rather than riding
(if the masjid is of walking distance and
does not burden or create a hardship).
4) It is from the sunnah to go back to ones
house walking from a different route than
that which was taken to get there.
Some scholars explain this as a way to
meet and greet more people.
5) To say takbeer out loud because it is
one of the symbols of that day.
The takbeer is said on the morning of Eid
and continues on throughout until the Adhan is called. Worshippers join in on the
takbeer uttered by the imam during the
khutbah.
6) One of the most common forms of takbeer used by the Prophet sallah allahu
alayhi wa salam and sahabah was: Allahu
Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La Ilaaha Illa Allah,
Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Wallilahil
hamd
7) Performing the Eid prayer before the
khutbah is from the sunnah.
Unlike Jumah, sitting and listening to the
Eid khutbah is sunnah, meaning you can
leave if you desire to after the prayer.
8) Eid is a joyous occasion for the Muslims and should be celebrated with family,
friends, and the community. One of the
ways this was expressed during the time of
Prophet sallah allahu alayhi wa salam, was
through chants and inspirational lyrics.
It was recorded that a few young girls
took part in celebrating by chanting in the
Prophet sallah Allahu alayhi wa salams
house on this day. Abu Bakar radhia allahu
anh walked in and scolded them for chanting in the manner they did.
The prophet sallah allahu alayhi wa salam

said, Leave them Abu Bakr, for every faith

is a celebration and this is our celebration.
Another incident that illustrates the joy of
Eid, was when the young black boys played
with their spears expressing their happiness of the upcoming Eid. The Prophet,
sallah Allahu alayhi wa salam upon seeing Aisha radhia allahu anhas interest in
how they played, stood in a way to let Aisha radhia allahu anha rest her head on his
shoulder, and his cheek to her cheek, until
she became bored.
9) After the completion of the khutbah,
Muslims should greet each other.
A common statement of greeting among
the sahabah radia Allah anhum was: Taqabala Allahu Minna wa mink (May Allah accept from us and you)
10) Those in charge should try to make the
Eid prayer outside in an open area unless
there is a reason barring them from this. It
was the consistent pattern of the Prophet
sallah Allahu alayhi wa salam to perform all
Eid prayers out in the open.
11) Every Muslim should strive to attend
the Eid prayer; men, women, and children.
Even women who are unable to pray due to
their menstrual cycle, are still encouraged
to attend the celebration of the Muslims.
However, she is not to join in the prayer
as was stated by the Prophet sallah Allah
alayhi wasalam.
Undesirable Actions on the Day of Eid:
1) It is haram to fast the day of Eid.
2) Some people consider it from the sunnah to stay up the night before the Eid worshipping, praying, and reading Quran. This
proof is evidenced in the following hadith:
Whomever livens the night of Eid, will
have a live heart when other hearts die,
meaning liven it with prayer.
This hadith has two chains to it; one weak
and the other extremely weak. If one is in
the habit of staying up and worshipping
Allah, as is encouraged in the Quran and
Sunnah, then it is permissible to do so. It

is important, however, not to turn this into

a special night of worship. To claim otherwise, would be considered an innovation.
3) One should avoid excessive mixing and
mingling with the opposite sex who are not
mahram relatives. Naturally, this should be
done throughout the year, but even more
so during the Eid, given the celebratory nature of this day.
4) Sisters should be cautious of wearing
make-up and wearing perfume when leaving their houses and being in public.
5) There is no sunnah prayer before the
Eid prayer. If the Eid prayer is performed in
the masjid, then one should pray 2 rakat of
tahiyat al-masjid-in respect to the masjidupon entering it. When the Eid prayer is
held in an open area, such as a hall or ballroom, then one does not pray the 2 rakah
of tahiyat al-masjid.
6) One should always observe the limits
prescribed by Islam. Although it is from the
sunnah to enjoy the celebration of Eid, one
should avoid parties that contain instruments of the devil (music), or staying up
late to the point of missing Salatul Fajr.
7) The celebration of Eid is especially joyous not because one is free from the constraints of Ramadhan, but rather one is
blessed with the opportunity to worship.
Also, we celebrate with the hope that we
are from the ones that will be freed from
hell fire and rewarded with heaven.
8) To visit the graves specifically on the day
of the Eid is an innovation. If one visits the
graves throughout the year, there is no particular harm, and actually will be rewarded
since it is from the sunnah. One should not
make it a point to do on this day only.
9) Remember your brothers and sisters in
your duaa, because although you may be
happy this Eid, there are masses of Muslims who are oppressed, occupied, and
suffering throughout the world. May Allah
subhanahu wa Taala return the Eid upon
us in the liberation of the Muslim lands.

Just few days of Ramadhan left You can still do it!

word or pushed them to reach a higher
level of emaan.
Give to receive:
Nothing increases the barakah and blessings of your life like charity does. It extinguishes sins like water puts off fire. Imagine having a clean book of deeds with no
sins against your name?! So, give and give
some more in charity.
Since every single act of good deed is multiplied innumerably during the month of
Ramadhan, what better way to make the
best use of the last ten days than in giving
charity?
It could be a single dollar in your eyes, but
when done sincerely, it could be counted
as a billion dollars or more in terms of re-

wards in Allahs eyes. Purify your intentions and give. And you might just receive
so much more than you ever dreamt off!
Charity would be a satisfying way to end
Ramadhan.
Ibn `Abbs relates that: Allahs Messenger
was the most generous of all people in doing good, and he was at his most generous
during the month of Ramadhan.
Jibril used to meet with him every year
throughout the month of Ramadhan, so
the Prophet could recite the Qurn to him.
Whenever Jibril met with him, he became
more generous than a beneficial breeze.
(Bukhari and Muslim). May Allah forgive us
for our shortcomings and pour His mercy
and blessings upon us. Ameen.

OPINION

Ramadhan 26,1437/July 01, 2016

We must all admit, its the occupation

Daoud Kuttab

Every psychologists or substance advisor

will tell you that you cant deal with disease
or an addiction or any other problem without first recognizing that there is a problem. The same applies to the decades old
Middle East conflict.
The conflict has long passed the stage of
being focused entirely about Israels existence; the world recognizes Israel on the
June 1967 border. The PLO in 1993 recognized Israel and exchanged letters of recognition, even President Bill Clinton was
witness to the 1998 vote in the Palestinian National Council meeting in Gaza that
amended the PLO charter that removed
all clauses to the contrary of the PLO-Israel memorandum of Understanding, also
known as the Oslo Accords.
Professor Cornell West is absolutely right
as he pleaded with the Democratic Partys
platform committee to be honest and truthful and call things by their names. Professor West and his colleagues lost the vote in
the Hillary majority committee 5-8 and had
to abstain in the vote for the entire platform
due to the failure of fellow members willing
to call the situation for which Palestinian
are suffering under as occupation.
Sure the term foreign military occupation
is abhorrent to Zionist Israelis who built
their ideology on the fact that Palestine
was a land without a people for a people
without a land. Secular Zionists are now
saying that the entire mandatory Palestine was given to them by the God of the
Jews. Ironically while President Abbas and
before him Arafat are devout Muslims they
didnt make the religious claims that Hamas and others make that Palestine is an
Islamic Endowment (waqf) that should not
be compromised on.
International law doesnt even deal with
the Israeli legalistic term of disputed territory nor is there any international legal
reference to the rights of people under this
invented Israeli term
The fact that it is a military occupation is

hardly difficult to see. The rulers of the

West Bank and the enforcers of the siege
on Gaza is the coordinator of activities in
the Israeli army. Even Israel, which unilaterally annexed East Jerusalem and has
border patrols throughout the old city and
the outlying areas of the city 24/7, doesnt
claim that the West Bank is part of the state
of Israel.
Palestinians, who as West said accurately,
feel daily the boots of the occupiers are
not citizens of Israel and the International
Criminal Court has ruled that their lands
across the 1967 Green line are indeed occupied territories.
International law doesnt even deal with the
Israeli legalistic term of disputed territory
nor is there any international legal reference to the rights of people under this invented Israeli term. The only international
reference that has been validated by international humanitarian law and the UN
system is the Geneva Conventions created
after World War II to specifically address
the cases of long term occupations.
Security Council
In fact the United Nations Security Council
speaking of these territories forcible taken
in the June 1967 war declared in the preamble of resolution 242 the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war. All
international resolutions since have refer to
the Occupied Palestinian territories.
Palestinians and the world have reluctantly
come around to accept the post Holocaust
needs of European Jews and have come to
terms with the existence of Israel. Now is
the time to understand that there is another
people, the Palestinians, who are also in
need of a homeland on their land.
Admitting the existence of occupation
is naturally the first step in curing this
decades-long conflict. The next move, as
Cornell West and James Zogby correctly
pointed in the Democratic platform discussions is the need to put a stop to the
discriminatory and illegal colonial settle-

'I hope Istanbul attack becomes a turning point for

united fight against terrorism' Erdogan
"I hope that the Ataturk Airport attack, especially in Western countries [and] all over
the world, will be a milestone for the joint
fight against terrorist organizations, a turning point," he said.
Erdogan said the attacks, which took place
during the holy month of Ramadan, show
that terrorism strikes with no regard for faith
and values.
He also expressed his condolences to the
citizens who lost their lives and the entire
nation.
"It is clear that this attack is not aimed at
achieving any result but only to create propaganda material against our country using
simply the blood and pain of innocent peo-

Page 8

ple," he added.
The Turkish president also said that he
expects the world, and especially Western countries, to demonstrate a decisive
stance in the battle with terrorist organizations.
Turkey, in the meantime, will continue the
fight, despite the huge cost we are paying.
Todays bombs in Istanbul [have demonstrated] the treacherous nature of terrorism,
Erdogan said. It could happen in any city in
the world, in any airport.
Once again, God have mercy on our citizens
who lost their lives in the attack, I wish the injured a speedy recovery, the president said.

ment enterprise. If the entire world including most Israelis and Palestinians accept
that the two states for two peoples is the
best possible compromise, then the idea
that the prevailing military power confiscating lands and transferring its population to
these occupied territories make no sense.
Settlement colonies built in the West Bank
(including east Jerusalem) for Jews in the
occupied territories are illegal according
to international law as they violate the IV
Geneva convention which explicitly forbids
the transfer of people from the occupying
country to the occupied areas.
Not only do we need to speak truth to
power and fight off one issue political donors like Haim Saban, but Palestinians and
Israelis must also admit that they are unable to solve the conflict on their own and
that they need help. Palestinians have accepted the French Initiative and have for 16
years been promoting the Arab Peace Plan
which would normalize relations between
Israel with the Arab and Islamic world. Israel has rejected these peace offers and has
vowed in the name of its prime minister to
forever live with the sword and will control
all territory for the foreseeable future.
The efforts by the most successful American Jewish nominee, Bernie Sanders, and
his delegates to put some common sense in
the foreign policy planks of the Democratic
Partys platform provides a rare breath of
fresh air in a US campaign that has been
marred with hate, racism and xenophobia
by the presumptive Republican nominee.
If the Democratic leader Hillary Clinton
wants to seriously tackle the conflict in the
Middle East, she needs to focus on an honest appraisal and recognition of the problem at hand. Re-applying a slogan made
famous by her husband, all people genuinely interested in peace in the Middle East
must admit a simple truth. Its the occupation s----.

Enroll in vocational institutions, Garissa governor tells youth

Garissa governor Nathif Jama has urged
youth in the county to take up courses in
vocational training instead of staying idle
and engaging in illegal activities that may
put them at odds with the law.
While emphasizing on the role of technical
and vocational institutions as an alternative
sources of employment and development,
Jama said it was regrettable that many local youth have shunned away from vocational training despite them not making it
the levels of university and college education.
The governor explained that that these institutions are not meant to be centres for
failures as negatively perceived by many
youth but centres for providing tertiary education. Our youth have completely looked
down upon vocational training. They believe these courses are meant for others
and not them. This is a very poor perception that we need to counter through sensitization, he said.
He was speaking at the Garissa Vocational

Tana River youth protest

over ID cards

Hundreds of angry youth in Madogo Tana

River County on Saturday took to the
streets to protest delays in the issuance of
identity cards.
As a sign of their frustration, the youth
blocked the busy Garissa-Nairobi Highway
for hours and waved placards and posters
to highlight their plight. The youth cited discrimination and bias by the government in
the issuance of the document and blamed
the office of the registrar of persons for denying them the vital document.
They demanded for an explanation for the
long delays in the processing of their identification cards. Some of them said they
have spent up to five years waiting for the
document which is must have for every
Kenyan who has attained the age of 18
years.
We want to know what exactly transpires
in the office of the registrar of persons.
Why are our IDs taking too long? Majority of youth in this area are helpless due to
lack of the document, said one of the demonstrating youth. The youth said lack of ID
cards has brought their life to a standstill
and they can no longer endure the suffering they are being subjected to.
They lamented that simple tasks such as
opening a bank account, an M-pesa account or even travelling to other parts of
the country is an impossibility for those
who lack the documents.
The youth said they have also been denied
their constitutional given right to vote as a
result and accused local politicians of colluding with registration officials who they
say only push for the issuance of the documents in their political backyards.
Commenting on the matter, Tana River registrar of persons Benson Kwendo told the
protesting youth to take their grievances
to his office where he promised to address
their complaints.

Dairy farming to transform lives of Kakamega Muslims

Muslim women in Kakamega have embarked on dairy farming project to empower themselves economically to improve on
their lives for social economic development. The project is being spearheaded
and implemented by the Kakamega Jamia
Mosque women secretariat.
Recently Muslim women received a cheque
of Ksh 300,000 from the County government of Kakamega to support their dairy
project that was launched last year. ''This
is one of the several projects that Kakamega Jamia mosque women secretariat is
implementing with the aim of improving the
livelihoods of Muslim families for sustainability,'' She said.
According to Kakamega Jamia Mosque
women leader Amida Indimuli, the initiative was driven by the need to address the
social economic challenges faced by the
local Muslims stressing that the venture will
help combat food insecurity in the region.
She lamented that a large population of the
Muslim community in the region live in poverty and called on Muslim organizations to
promote economic sustenance to the unfortunate through setting up viable projects
that could transform them to be productive.
She disclosed that the project aims at providing sustainable living to the local Muslim

community and eradicate poverty through

the sale and consumption of milk. Amida
further stated that with financial support
they received from the County government
of Kakamega, the group will benefit more
families where it is envisaged that the project will have a positive bearing on the local Muslim community and the society in
general.
Amida thanked the County government
for the financial support and exuded confidence that the project will go a long way
in helping local Muslims increase milk production and improve livestock husbandry in
the community.
The women leader said that the secretariat
will engage livestock officers in educating
the Muslim women on matters pertaining
to agriculture and livestock keeping to help
them realize their full potential and improve
their lives.

Food relief for Nairobi slums

This week Ummah Foundation in partnership with Global Humanitarian Relief Foundation (GHRF) of UK visited Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. This suburb of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is
home to more than one million people, who eke out a living in an
area of about one square mile.
The aim of the visit was to extend a hand of support and food distribution to more than fifty families that were earlier identified. The
packages were delivered at Al Aqsa Mosque and the families got
their rations. This is in solidarity with the spirit of Ramadhan where
we are called upon to mind about the welfare of others and strive
by all means by doing good deeds. The best deed one can do during these holy days and nights is to care for the poor.
The caravan did not stop in Kibera but we took our loads to another deprived locality of Mwamto, another informal settlement that
is adjacent to the affluent Kitusuru estate. The area has a large
numbers of low income Muslim dwellers.
We also targeted needy families and more especially the widows
and orphans who we gave the upper priority. Food being in abundance most of it reached almost all the residents in the village.
This was done in coordination with the local Imam who we heavily
relied on to give us the need analysis before we embarked on our
relief caravan.
Ummah Foundation and GHRF went round other city slums and
orphanages distributing food packages that comprised of maize
flour, wheat flour, sugar, rice, beans, cooking oil, salt, green grams

and tea leaves. These food parcels were also delivered to needy
families in Athi River, Majengo and deep sea slums.
The month of Ramadhan is not only about ones personal spiritual
life, but also about helping others. One of the greatest objectives
of the month of Ramadhan is understanding what others are going
through, those who are less fortunate. In keeping with the season's theme of sacrifice and remembering the poor, both Ummah
Foundation and GHRF have created awareness that Ramadhan
allows you to give back, to appreciate your blessings.
The prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam in his hadith said; Whoever feeds a fasting person will have reward like that of the fasting
person, without any reduction in his reward. (Tirmidhi)
We would like to appreciate the continuous support our partners;
Global Humanitarian Relief Foundation (GHRF) have extended to
us to make this program in particular and others be successful.
May Allah reward you all abundantly in your endeavours and tireless support.
