0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 OPEN SOURCE
Open Source Software (OSS) defined as computer software for which the source code and
certain other right normally reserved copyright holders are provided under a software license
that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. Open Source Software
is the most prominent example of open source development and often compared to usergenerated content. Open source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free
software.

1.2 HARDWARE
Hardware is general term that refers to the physical artifacts of a technology. It may also
mean the physical component of a computer system, in the form of computer hardware.

1.3 SOFTWARE
Software is a general term used to describe a collection of computer programs, procedures
and documentation that perform some tasks on a computer system. Software includes
program, etc. That era coded by programming languages.

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)

2.1 Meaning Of Operating System Os (OSOS)
Open Source Operating System is the most important program that runs on a computer that is
free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified
forms. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs.
Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending
output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling
peripheral devices such as disk drive and printers.

2.2) Example of Operating System OS (OSOS)

EXAMPLE NO.1
DREAMLINUX 5

Dream Linux is a distribution that is based on Debian Wheezy and using the latest desktop
version of XFCE 4.8 on a Linux 3.1 Kernel .Dream Linux has just released this latest version on January 2012
after a long absence and we will see if it can make up for lost time.
When youve created a bootable Live DVD of Dream Linux, you are greated
by a Mac OS X style desktop with which most of the software packages you have installed are there for you on
the kicker bar by default, or you can, still use the menu on the top left side of the screen and access the program
you want from there.

EXAMPLE NO.2
UBUNTU 12.04

Ubuntu12.04 release on 5 February 2012, code-named "Precise Pangolin", the Ubuntu developers have
released the latest version of the popular Linux distribution to their users. The six-monthly Ubuntu release cycle
is organised so that every two years, a version is labelled as a Long Term Support release and 12.04 is the
latest of these. LTS versions were historically supported for three years on the desktop and five years on the
server side, but with Precise, this has been changed to five years of support for both editions. The character of
2

an LTS release implies a focus on stability and polish, as it has to be supported for a long time, and with five
years of planned support for the desktop version, the Ubuntu developer community has set itself a big task to
full fill. This is reflected in the changes that have been included in the newest version: new features are mostly
concerned with polishing the user interface and making the underlying technologies more stable.

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE

3.1 Meaning Of Open Source Application Software
Open Source Application software include database programs, word processors, and
spreadsheets and others. It is free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute
it in modified or unmodified forms.

3.2 Examples Of Open Source Applications Software

a) Web Browser
*Mozilla Firefox

A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, traversing information

resources on the World Wide Web. An information resources indentified by a Uniform
Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content.
Hyperlink present in resources enable users easily to navigate their browsers to related

resources. The major web browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome,
Apple Safari, and Opera.

b) Gnome

GNOME Office empowers you with three best in class productivity applications available
as GNU Free Software. The times of wrestling with file formats, compatibility ,and halfwaythere features is over. The AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet, and Gnome-DB
data access components allow you to get it done now.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING

5.1 Meaning of pervasive computing
Pervasive computing (also called ubiquitous computing) is the growing trend towards
embedding microprocessors in everyday objects. The word pervasive and ubiquitous mean
existing everywhere. Pervasive computing devices are completely connected and constantly
available.
Pervasive computing relies on the convergence of wireless technologies, advanced
electronics and the Internet. The goal of researchers working in pervasive computing is to
create smart product that communicate unobtrusively. The product are connected to the
Internet and they generate is easily available.

5.2 Example Of Pervasive Computing

*ASUS Eee Pad 101TC

ASUS Eee Pad 101TC is in some respects a whole different kettle of fish to its bigger brother.
Its not just the 10 inches of glass that follows in the iPads footsteps, but also the mental
sleeve around the edge now. Eitherway, this has become an aesthetically acceptable style and
the textured backside also looks good and adds grip, however in the early sample show the
quality of manufacture still need some tweaking around the edges.

* Smart TV
*Samsung Smart TV

Smart TV, which is also sometimes referred to us Connected TV or Hybrid TV, is

the phrase used to describe the current trend of integration of the internet and Web 2.0
features into modern television sets and set-top boxes, as well as the technological
convergence between computers and these television sets/set-top boxes. These new devices
most often also have a much higher focus on online interactive media, Internet TV, over-thetop content, as well as on- demand streaming media, and less focus on traditional broadcast
media like previous generations of television sets/set-top boxes always have had
The technology that enables Smart TVs is not only incorporated into television sets,
but also devices such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, game consoles, and other companion
devices. These devices allow viewers to search and find videos, movies, photos and other
content on the web, on a local cable TV channel, or stored on a local hard drive.

6.0 CONCLUSION

Open Source can be used by any one and because it has no copyright claims, so user are free
to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified o unmodified
forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier.
