Democracy works only for electing a group of leaders that are the most capable and

honest. Once that is done, the leader should have the power and freedom to decide
where the country is heading, and craft policies that moves the country in that
direction. The general population should not be able to interfere with these
decisions. Why? The average voter is selfish. He will support policies that benefits
him and disapprove the ones that are unfair to him. There is a conflict of interest
when the average voter gets to decide what is happening to the country. He will
decide on an issue based on what is best for him rather than what is best for the
country. However what is best for the majority might not be the wisest decision in
the grand scheme of things. Brexit is a fine example to illustrate this point. Because
of the microscopic views of the blue-collar/rural majority who were desperate to rid
the country of immigrants stealing their jobs, they were unable comprehend that
EUs single market was a significant source of revenue for them. They were blinded
by anger, and easily absorbed the false narrative fed by UKIP Nigel Farage: that EU
are the ones that are dependent on UK, that it is possible for UK to thrive without
the EU. They disregarded the forewarning from major academia and financial
institutions on the disastrous consequences and uncertainty that awaits the UK if
Brexit were to happen. And now as the referendum is passed, as the stock markets
crash and burn, and the future of the European markets become unstable and
uncertain; the citizens of the UK are finally able to comprehend the disaster that is
to befall on them soon enough.
Politicians nowadays have degraded into people-pleasing cowards that are not
ashamed to play dirty for power and fame, rather than genuinely leading with firm
beliefs and unshakable values, convincing the population to grant him the mandate
through charisma and persuasion. The US and UK will need a figure comparable to
the likes of Lee Kuan Yew or Hitler to rise above the paralyzing democratic two party
system, take the bull by the horns and selflessly steer the country towards progress
with steely resolve.
