Dear Editor:
The city of Claremont already owns the
land on which to build the proposed new police station to replace the existing building
on Bonita Avenue.
With pre-existing access onto Arrow
Highway, the plot of land to the south of Hibbards Chevrolet dealership on Indian Hill
[COURIER, June 24] is perfect for the
project, and an area the city is keen to develop.
The existing police station could be demolished, and the land sold to developers
for new town houses to complement those
on West First Street and Cornell Avenue.
Its a win-win for the taxpayers of Claremont.

Dear Editor:
I take issue with the reader who, in a letter published in the June 17 COURIER, accused Publisher Peter Weinberger of being
misinformed in noting what he considered
to be the slow pace of the Mayors Police
Facility Ad Hoc Committee. The reader instead blames city staff, whom he insults by
referring to the leisurely four-day workweek attitude of the city workers and leadership. I do not believe city staff are at fault.
I strongly suspect that the reader has never met any of the city staff whom he
blithely castigates, and that he does not understand that if they work only four days a
week, as I did for many years, they still put
in the full conventional 40-hour work week
or more, just as I did. It is not fair for us to
expect them to put in more hours at their jobs
than the reader likely has done in his own
occupation.
The slow pace, rather, has been due to
the constant bickering by members of the
public and committee members with their
various interests, which often conflict with
each other. I suggest the reader, instead of
criticizing the sometimes slow progress regarding plans for a new or improved police
facility, volunteers to become a part of the
committee himself, with the goal of perhaps
helping to improve the situation.

Dear Editor:
After the NRAwith its hands around the
throats of the bootlicker Congresspushed
through its own version of the Second
Amendment, US Supreme Court Chief
Justice Warren Burger proclaimed it a
fraud on the American public. He said further, the Second Amendment doesnt guarantee the right to have firearms at all. Why
dont we hear this quotation more often?
When will we assert our Constitutional
rights, reclaim our Constitution and wrestle it out of the hands of the NRA? That militarized group has a lock-hold on congress
and together they have violated our Constitution by polluting the Second Amendment for their own power and profit.
We need to have the Second Amendment
purged of the NRA influence. The Second
Amendment was never intended to allow
every citizen to be armed, and no matter what
the NRA says, citizens have absolutely no
right to be armed with assault weapons. The
NRA will become richer and more powerful as we become fear-ridden enemies of
each other. Now we must worryis my
neighbor going to kill me or should I kill him
first?
Next, the NRA will insist that when couples apply to marry, they ought to be issued
a gun and trained in using it, because you
never know when the person you most trust
is going to turn on you. And perhaps the
NRA will then insist that guns be issued to
newborns, because you never know when
they will need to defend themselves against
abusive parents.
We have got to kick the NRA out of congress and the Constitution. Lets reinstate the
original Second Amendment, which was and
should be: When our nation is threatened by
an enemy, we have the right to arm ourselves
in defense. Its time to act.

*This chart of proposed expenses for the amended 2016 plan for Claremonts news police
station was presented to the Mayors Police Facility Ad Hoc Committee for consideration
at the Wednesday, June 29 meeting.
The lot has sat empty since the early part of 2016.
According to an earlier COURIER arCITY
ticle, Director of Community Services
Brian Desatnik said the developers inCOUNCIL
dicated they were going to put the development on hold for 60 days to reassess the market.
Mr. Pedroza said that with the target date past, the
city is exploring its options.
We authorized the city manager to meet with special
counsel to schedule options to remedy the nuisance and
complaints at the Lyon Homes project on Base Line,
Mr. Pedroza said.
Jon W. Robertson, the president of William Lyons

the issue.
Decision delayed on home improvement program
The council pushed two resolutions authorizing open
PACE financing in the city during the June 28 meeting.
PACE financing, short for Property Assessed Clean
Energy, is a program where homeowners can make
clean energy improvements and pay for them as an addon to their property tax bill. State law mandates that
each PACE financing group be required to get approval
from the city to operate within its borders.
Principal Planner Chris Veirs presented the staff report to the city. Two PACE financing groupsFigtree,
which specializes in commercial PACE retrofits, and
CSCSA, which stands for California Statewide Community Development Authoritywere vetted by the
city and given the green light to operate within Claremont, pending council approval.
One group, Ygrene, was mentioned in the staff report but ultimately not recommended for inclusion. The
reason, Mr. Veirs explained, is their lack of adherence
to Los Angeles County Energy Programs consumer
protection mandate and their aggressive sales tactics to
homeowners.

and long before the grand experiment in cross-cultural living that manifested itself in the late 1940s at
the Intercultural Council Houses that were recently
placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Clearly, the contributions of Helen Renwick laid the
groundwork for this later endeavor, as well as those
traits that have made Claremont the city which it has
become.
Probably her most noteworthy contribution to the
development of the city is the public library. Ms. Renwick believed that the city needed a library because
there was not one for children to use. She supported
the fledgling Los Angeles County Library system and
worked with the Womens Union to establish the library in various locations before it found its permanent home. In 1919, convinced that Claremont should
have a library building of which it could be proud,
she donated six lots to the city, situated at Yale and
Second Street. She envisioned a civic center that
would include city hall, the post office, the Santa Fe
Depot and, finally, a library building. She insisted the
library be constructed within 10 years of the gift and
that it cost no less than $20,000.
During the 1920s, a library committee was appointed, which included Ms. Renwick. The Claremont COURIER published several editorials
encouraging the new library building. In the spring of
1927, an election was held and a $25,000 bond for the
library was approved by a wide margin. Renowned
Pasadena architects Marston & Maybury were selected to design the building. And at last, Claremont
had its library to complete its civic center.
The building was dedicated on October 6, 1928,
and one of the speakers was 83-year-old Helen Renwick. Unfortunately, this building was demolished
when the now-existing library was built.
Renwick House is clearly a historic building because of its association with a figure that contributed
so much to what has made Claremont, Claremont. It
is no accident that Ms. Wright devotes an entire chapter to Helen Renwick in her book, Claremont
Women 1887-1950. The placement of the house on
the National Register honors the memory and legacy
of a woman dedicated to the development of the civic
and cultural life of the communitya legacy that
lives on today.
Whats an eco-village?
Dear Editor:
I would like to respond to a few points
in Mark von Wodtkes article in the June 24
COURIER titled There is no place like
home in the Claremont eco-village. Mr. von
Wodtkes article was almost a full page but,
lets be honest, it didnt say much.
How about giving us something a bit
more concrete if you want to fight our complacency? Like how about describing
some real-life issues and suggesting some
helpful solutions. Perhaps you and your
group could come up with a few simple
things we can all do to help our eco-village and ourselves without quite so much
visionary verbiage, please. Okay, you water your treesme too. Im quite worried
about the trees in this community, to be honest. Were losing them at an alarming rate,
and some of the extreme trimming and pruning Ive seen isnt helping one bit. Im sure
with these high temps and low humidity you
would agree this is not the time to be planting trees, well-placed or otherwise, or
much of anything else for that matter.

OBITUARIES
She was born on June 13, 1934 in central Illinois to Harry and Eva Schutte, the
second youngest of five siblings. Young
Mary Ann was raised on a farm, an upbringing that showed in her indomitable
work ethic and perseverance in whatever
obstacle she faced. She struggled early as
a single mother with two children, finding work in a library to support her family. This is where she met and married
Patrick Barkey, a librarian, and soon another child was added to the family.
While raising three children, Mrs.
Barkey went on to earn a bachelors degree in sociology and masters degree in
social work, while on the move from
Kingsville, Texas to Toledo, Ohio and
eventually landing in Claremont in 1974
when her husband was appointed director
of libraries for the Claremont Colleges.
After her late husbands death in 1988,
Mary Ann became an itinerant traveller,
logging over 40 countries in her journeys.
From camel rides in Morocco to attendance at Bulgarias annual rose festival to
an adventure as an invited guest at a Russian dacha, she not only sought travel but
enjoyed places not often found in guidebooks. She had an eye and flair for col-
lecting art objects from her travels and enjoyed decorating her home.
Mrs. Barkeys bright and inquisitive
spirit was always on display as she was
an avid reader and lover of nature. Her
home was the hub of all family gatherings and her signature enchiladas were a
Christmas Eve tradition. While she had a
fiercely independent streak, she remained
steadfastly committed to helping others.
Despite her many aches and pains in the
final years, she continued to garden and
kept her hummingbird feeders filled, providing her with much joy and tranquility.
Mary Ann is survived by three children, Brian (Janice), Leslie and Daniel
(Heidi); her brother John and sister Dolores; her four grandchildren, Rachel,
Jason, Charlie and Elyse, and a greatgrandson, Mauro, aka Mister.
Memorial services will be held on
Wednesday, July 20 at 2 p.m. in the Garner House at Memorial Park, located at
840 N. Indian Hill Blvd. in Claremont.

Her love and caring for this greatly expanded family, and especially for her
husband Hallam, was special.
In addition to these family responsibilities, Mrs. Shorrock was a blessing
to the wider community as well as to
Pilgrim Place, through her Lenten
organ concerts at the UCC Church, her
piano playing at worship and other
services and programs, and her beautiful flower arrangements, as well as her
work at the annual festival in the dramas, the International Bazaar, the Petterson Museum and used clothing shop,
the Emporium.
Yasuko is greatly mourned by all in
her own immediate family, by her husband and his family, and by so many
friends in the American and Japanese
communities.
Two quotations from the scores of
notes from her friends sum up her life in
these words: One of the joys of living
at Pilgrim Place has been her friendship,
wisdom and artistic soul. She brought
beauty and light and grace into our lives
and will always be in our hearts.
Yasukos memorial service will be
held on Saturday, July 23 at 3 p.m. in
Decker Hall at Pilgrim Place, followed
by a reception in the Napier Center.

SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL
CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN
THIS STATE:
All right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by
the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and
pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as:
More fully described in said Deed of Trust.
Street Address or other common designation of real property: 5317 Cahuenga Boulevard Unit #D, Los Angeles, CA 91601
A.P.N.: 2416-027-040
The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any
incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above.
The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the
note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount
of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses
and advances at the time of the initial publication of the
Notice of Sale is: $ 183,347.03.
If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason,
the successful bidders sole and exclusive remedy shall
be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the
successful bidder shall have no further recourse.
The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence
foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where
the real property is located.
NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee
auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does
not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership
of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible
for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned
off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You
are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and
size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property
by contacting the county recorders office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee
for this information. If you consult either of these resources,
you should be aware that the same lender may hold more
than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less
than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of
the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more
times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The
law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as
a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to
learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if
applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of
this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using
the file number assigned to this case 2016-00150-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may
not immediately be reflected in the telephone information
or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

Notable Quotables
The reason to
retire is to try to avoid
embarrassment; you
ought to do it before
people are dropping
big hints. You want to
be the first to come up
with the idea. You
don't want to wait
until you trip and fall
off the stage.
