Chinna Jeeyar Swamy to release film audio album

Hyderabad: For the first time ever, Sri Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamy will be participating as a
chief guest in a film-related event.
The spiritual guru is set to release the audio album of Telugu devotional film Chilkur Balaji
on June 14 at an auditorium at his sprawling 72-acre ashram near Shamshabad.
The temple is also called as Telangana Tirumala by devotees. Swamiji gave his nod since
he wanted to spread devotion among the people and wanted more people to know about the sacredness
of Chilkur Balaji across the world, said a source close to the unit.
Chilkur Balaji is also hailed as Visa God since many, who aspire to go to the US offer prayers
and perform 11 circumambulations of the inner shrine and once their wish is fulfilled they walk 108
times around the sanctum sanctorum, he added.
Already, the period drama that revolves a real-life character Madhava Reddy (enacted by actor
Sai Kumar) who surpassed many a hurdle to build the sacred temple, has caught the attention of
distributors of AP, TS and renowned musician Ghajal Srinivas who is a member of US-based Save
Temple Organistion.
It is true that we are in talks with Save Temple Organisation and they are planning to release
our devotional film in US, UK and Canada to spread the popularity of Telangana Tirumala all over the
world and draw more devotees to a temple which discourages hundi offerings and run by a non-profit
trust board adds the source.
Even TRS Endowments Ministry is keen to promote the devotional film in a big way.
When contacted, producer-director Allani Sridhar, who made the film, likened his effort to a devotee
offering a flower to Lord Balaji.

EACH ONE PLANT ONE TREE

Exactly one year has passed since the Haritha Haram Program was launched from
Chilkur by the Honble Chief Minister of Telangana Sri K. Chandrasekhar Rao, in July 2015.
On June 12th this year we distributed 540 saplings on VRUKSHAROPANAM in continuation
of the same at Chilkur Balaji Temple.
Trees contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate
amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process
of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe. One
acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This
is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people. Trees, shrubs and turf also filter air
by removing dust and absorbing other pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and
nitrogen dioxide. After trees intercept unhealthy particles, rain washes them to the ground.
Trees control climate by moderating the effects of the sun, rain and wind. Leaves
absorb and filter the suns radiant energy, keeping things cool in summer. Trees also preserve
warmth by providing a screen from harsh wind. In addition to influencing wind speed and
direction, they shield us from the downfall of rain, sleet and hail. Trees also lower the air
temperature and reduce the heat intensity of the greenhouse effect by maintaining low
levels of carbon dioxide.
Both above and below ground, trees are essential to the eco-systems in which
they reside. Far reaching roots hold soil in place and fight erosion. Trees absorb and
store rainwater which reduce runoff and sediment deposits after storms. This helps the
ground water supply recharge, prevents the transport of chemicals into streams and prevents
flooding. Fallen leaves make excellent compost that enriches soil.
Many animals, including elephants, koalas and giraffes eat leaves for nourishment.
Flowers are eaten by monkeys, and nectar is a favorite for birds, bats and many insects.
Animals also eat much of the same fruit that we enjoy This process helps disperse seeds
over great distances. Of course, hundreds of living creatures call trees their home.
Vedas prescribe that no tree should be cut without a ritualistic purpose. Even a
grass cannot be playfully pulled and If it is done so for individual benefit then Brahma
hatya sin is ordained for the doer (sin of killing a Brahmin). There are prescriptions of
how branches not the trees should be cut and how we should take the permission and
blessing of the trees to do so. For example while collecting darbha grass for rituals the
mantra ends as follows: tzu|: o uz u z which means oh! Darbha
grass, you are the soft bed for devas and I am taking you for a ritualistic purpose. May
you grow with many offshoots and may my family tree grow with many offshoots. These
principles were sacredly followed by the sages of yore. Only dead trees were used for
disposal as firewood etc., and even cutting of branches of living trees was strictly prohibited
unless for an ordained ritual purpose with proper sanctions and permissions
The last time India took a serious note on tree plantation was after Sundarlal Bahugunas
Chipko movement in the 1970s. The concepts of afforestation and re-forestation, though
not alien, found currency in country. But can forest protection and climate issues be the
headache of governments and tree-hugging NGOs alone?
Hence, we want it to be a peoples movement from Chilkur. Devotees are requested
to plant minimum two saplings per head to revive the nature. Let us plant trees in crores
and take steps to protect nature.
O

There should be no regional boundaries for temples.

BEARER OF THE BEAUTIFUL EARTH

Sri V.S.Karunakaran, Chennai

Once Garudas wife Rudra told Him, Your beak

is very sharp. Whenever I come near you to embrace
you, the sharp beak pricks me. It is as sharp as
the sword which Dronacharya used in the
Mahabharata battle. What is the secret behind the
sharpness of your beak?
[In the 166th section of the Shanti Parva of
the Mahabharata, Bhishma narrates the history of
the sharp sword used by Drona in the epic war:
Nakula asked Bhishma, who was lying on the arrowbed, Which is the foremost of all weapons? How
was it created? Bhishma replied, Once upon a
time, the Asuras began to indulge in all sorts of
unlawful and anti-social activities. In order to put
an end to their atrocities, Lord Brahma and other
Devas performed a yagna in the summit of Himavat.
From the sacrificial fire, sprang up a creature with
extreme energy, dispersing flames around him, with
splendor like that of the moon and dark complexion
like the petals of a blue lotus. That being then
took the shape of a highly polished, sharp-edged
sword and came to be known as Asi. Brahma
handed over that sword to Lord Rudra initially, with
which he single-handedly finished off all Asuras.
Rudra then submitted the sword to Lord Narayana
with utmost devotion, which in turn was handed
over to Marichi by Lord Narayana. After changing
hands many times, it ultimately reached Bharadwaja,
from whom his son Dronacharya got it. Because
of that sword only, Drona was indomitable during
the Mahabharata war. After Dronas death, the sword
went into the possession of Krupacharya and now
it stays with you, Pandavas! Thus the sword is
the foremost of all weapons! Garudas beak is
also very sharp like that sword.]
Garuda replied, I have got an excellent
whetstone (rock used for sharpening weapons) with
which I sharpen my beak often. My whetstone is
the secret behind the sharpness of my beak!
Sukeerthi, another wife of Garuda enquired,
What is that special whetstone?
Garuda said, The shell of the Kurma Murti,
the tortoise-incarnation of the Lord is my whetstone.
I go and sharpen my beak by scraping it on His
shell!
Rudra said, Is it so? I know that when the
milky ocean was churned, the Mandara mountain
which was used as the mortar, could not swivel

without any support and it began to sink into the

sea. At that juncture, the Lord incarnated as the
mighty tortoise Kurma Murti and held the mighty
Mandara mountain on His back. Didnt the Lord
finish the Kurmavatar as soon as the churning was
over? Is that avatara still persisting? Where is that
Lord?
Garuda responded, As soon as the churning
of the milky ocean was over, Kurma Murti put aside
the Mandara mountain from His back and proceeded
to Patala loka to carry the Earth; and still He is
shouldering the Earth on His shell.
A doubt arose in Sukeerthis mind, Is the Earth
not carried by Adi Sesha? Sri Parasara Maharshi
says in Vishnu Purana (2-5-20):

uXZzQyoz uquolg @
Eoz os: zzDzuY|o: @@
Adi Sesha, who is worshipped by all Devas, is
staying under the Patala loka and carrying all the
worlds, like ornaments to His heads.
Garuda answered, Yes. It is true that Adi Sesha
carries all the worlds from below the Patala loka.
But it is Kurma murti, who is the base for Adi Sesha
also! Kurma Murti carries the entire universe along
with their carrier Adi Sesha on His shell! Even
today, we can see Kurma murti residing below the
Sesha Vahana in temples. In Nitya Ahnika karma,
there is a mantra

Salutations to Narayana, who carries the entire

universe in the form of Kurma murti
Rudra expressed her doubt, If you rub your
beak against His shell, wont that cause pain to
the Lord?
Garuda replied, Never. When the Mandara
mountain was churned on the Lords back, the Lord
felt its rhythmic movement as a pleasant massage
to His back. (Swami Desika says in Dasavatara

the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the

rope to churn the Milky Ocean. When the Mandara
Mountain began to lose its balance, our Lord took
the form of a giant tortoise to hold the mountain
firmly on His back. During the rhythmic movement
of the churning, the Lord felt as if His back was
being massaged to get relief from itches and pains.
That rhythmic movement soothed Him into a very
enjoyable sleep. He began to snore, which pushed
the surrounding water into mellifluous waves. The
power of His breath made the Lord enjoy this
churning-induced sleep with His Devi at His side.
May those powerful breaths protect the beings of
the three worlds!.
Garuda continued, After the churning of the
milky ocean was over, the Lord needed somebody
else to massage His back as it was done during
the churning. I grabbed the opportunity and am now
doing the service of massaging His shell by scraping
my beak on it. At the same time, my beak also
gets sharper and sharper because of that. (This
shows that if we do selfless service to the Lord,
our wishes will automatically get fulfilled)
Garuda, sharpening His beak on Kurma murtis
shell has been described by Swami Desika in His
Garuda Panchasath 31st shloka:

to sharpen his sickle on a rock strewn with sand.
Similarly, Garuda wants to reap his ripe crops, i.e.,

rock-like shell of the Kurma murti, who carries the

Garuda also added that while massaging the

Madhura Vijayam - 57

Sri Ranganatha Travel Part II

Tamil Manuscript : Sree Venugopalan, Chennai

Story so far: The story based on the 14th century

incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which
is based on the historic facts elucidated in
Madhura Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga
Devi, Chief Queen of King Kampanaraya. Two young
men Vallabha and Dutta set out on an expedition
to locate the idol of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam,
which was saved by four Kodavas from being
ransacked by Musliminvaders. After several
adventures the two boys, with the help of Chenchu
tribes found the idol along with one Kodava who
protected the idol for more than eighteen years
deep inside the forest of Chandragiri. Lord Ranganatha
was brought to Tirumala and King Ranganatha
Yadavaraya the ruler of that place patronized
the upkeep of the idol with daily pujas.
Coincidentally Sri Gopanna, commander-in-chief
of the Vijayanagaras mulvoy province reaches
Tirumalain search of Lord Ranganatha and he
promises Vallabha help of Vijayanagara to
restore Lord Ranganatha to Sri Rangam which
enabled Vallabha break his fast unto death. Vallabha
and Datta turned to Kancheepuram on their way
back, ensured safety of Manjari with her neighbors
after the death of Singazhagar who was the key
energy behind the expedition and left the town
with disguised Vaishnavas as the fort doors were
closed as a defense to an impending attack by
Vijayanagar army. The disguised Vaishnava leader
was no other than Camphor merchant who revealed
that he was the head of Intelligence army of
Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and the
V i j a y a n a g a r men managed to kill all their
pursuers and escaped to the foothills of the mountain
on which Sambuvarayas fort exists where at the
behest of Camphor merchant Vallabha and Datta
enter the Rajagambhira fort as Gem merchants
to rescue Makaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the
palace and ensure here safety. Meanwhile, as
a first step the Vijayanagar army mission was
undertaken to conquer Sambuvaraya of
Rajagambhira. Kancheepuram was conquered and
Kampana Rayas army advanced to Rajagambhira
mountain. conquered it and killed the Raja Gambhira
king. The Madurai princes was rescued. Later,
Vallabha and Datta are entrusted with the task
of escorting Princess Madhurangini to Pandya
kingdom. During this long journey, Vallabha expects
a heart-to-heart chat with the princess to express
his love. Meanwhile when the convoy comes to Mulvoy
kingdom Vallabha gets information that many of
the small kings who were under Sambuvarayas have
pledged allegiance to Vijayanagara emperor which
includes his mother land Sathyamangalam. This

English Translation : CSL Narasimhan

has significant influence in shortening their journey.

Enroute He decided to visit his mother at
Sathyamangalam
Vallabha and Datta along with his guards started
for Sathyamangalam. After four days of travel they
reached Sathyamangalam. When they reached
Sathyamangalam Vallabha felt quite excited
returning to his motherland and looking at the lush
greenery around full of big trees, natural gardens,
fruits, flowers. He watched the beautiful scenery
around without closing the screen of his palanquin.
His eyes were filled with diamond like tears. Quickly
he got caught by love to his mother and mother
land, he thought about all the time he has spent
all these days away from them. He saw the temple
tower (gopuram) of his town and the shining
kalashas (tips of the tower) of the temple tower
and he went into past remembrances. He felt he
has touched his previous birth place. After entering
the main entrance, people who were scattered
around came out and saw this crowd. Some people
looked at the palanquin with wide eyes. Once they
reached the by lanes, Vallabhan could not resist
himself. He became so restless. When the palanquin
stopped in front of his house, he was completely
in tears. After climbing up the steps he slowly
called amma. As she was not seen nearby he
walked inside. At the same time his mother was
walking worshipping tulsi plant with flowers turned
around after hearing the noise. She saw a shadow
of human figure. When she was wondering who
it could be, Vallabha once again called her Amma
like calf calling her mother. Vasanthika so stunned
to see him and quickly came running towards him
crying Vallabha. Both of them had a warm hug
like two seas joining together. Vallabha felt she
has turned little old as well as weak. At the same
time, Vasanthika felt elated seeing her son who
has become handsome, young strong adult.
Then she spoke, Dear Vallabha! Have You fulfilled
my dream ?
True Mother. I have finally found Lord Ranganatha
What? Did you really find Lord Ranga?. She asked
him with both belief and disbelief.
Oh Mother! It is very much true. I found him. I
saw him to the fulfillment of my heart.
I found him and also restored him back in the
city said Vallabha.
Where is he now? enquired Vasanthika.
Mother! He is now in Tirupathi. I will explain you
everything in detail. Now ,first tell me how are
you doing?
She asked him where is Dutta?

Dutta who was standing a little far hiding, came

in front of her. She hugged him too with full of
tears in her eyes.
All three mother, son and Dutta had heart content
chat the whole day and night with mutual love
to each other sharing all their experiences.
Vasanthika who lost her hope now felt a ray of
hope which grew into full fledged plant with full
of fruits and flowers.
Few days back, when Vallabha did not return she
lost all hopes thinking that everything is lost. All
these forty years what she was facing is only
failures more than success. Based on some belief,
she made her son take this task. She was not
sure whether he would be able to achieve such
a big task when she sent him. After he left, she
was even more worried as she did not receive
any message from him for several months. Later
when she came to know about Vallabha through
a Vasihnavaite from Kancheepuram, she regained
her lost hope a little. Later again when she was
in despair, Vallabha himself is in front of her as
if taken a rebirth. Not only he is there with her
but also he has brought a great news that he
has accomplished the most difficult task she had
given to him. After hearing all the brave and
strenuous actions and troubles that her son
underwent, she thought in her inner hearts of her
husband, oh dear! Your son is equally adventurous
and brave like you. He has so far fulfilled half of
your dreams. He will also accomplish the rest.
She felt so happy thinking like that.
Next day morning Vallabha again spoke to his
mother a lot. Finally he said, Oh mother! I have
a request. The great king of Mulvai Kampana Raya
has given me few more tasks to finish. These
are those which has to be done before capturing
Madurai. So I may have to leave along with Dutta.
Pl dont worry said Vallabha. After hearing this
Vasanthika became little shocked and was quite

for a long time. When Vallabha explained the

situation the state has been facing now, she slowly
recovered from her sadness. By these Lord
Ranganatha would reach Srirangam again. So far
all went well. So all will go well in future too. Thinking
that she started speaking to Vallabha, Vallabha!
If god wishes so, you please go ahead.
Next day they both started again. The soldiers
in the troupe who were staying in the nearby inn
joined them. When they were about to start on
the auspicious time, Vasanthika once again reminded
him about the message she has given to him.
Dont misuse your tongue, dont get lost in your
way and dont misuse your eyes.
Vallabha! one thing I would like to remind you.
Till you accomplish the task of placing Lord back
to Srirangam please do not think of getting married.
Ok !said Vallbha.
One more thing. As soon as possible please go
to Paragur and try to meet Rani Krishnayee. Her
voice choked when she told this.
Ok Amma !saying this Vallabha saw her mother
whose eyes were full of tears. The previous night
when he was explaining the incidents to her, he
had narrated with tears touching her feet the
gruesome incident of how the death of his brother
Chinna Kulasekaran happened in front of him and
that too with his own hands. When she heard about
that she too cried a lot and finally consoled him
saying that God wished so. He thought that she
will not take this topic again as the kid happened
to her husbands son in an unfortunate way and
that she may not like it to be discussed more.
But when he heard Vasanthika requesting him to
visit Rani Krishnayee he felt proud of his mothers
magnanimous heart.
Later she bid farewell to both Vallabha and Dutta
and blessed them all success. They both left along

of Ahobilam and the linkage of Ahobilam with Ahobila
Mutt. Many people of the present era are unaware
of the historical and pouranic values of the shrine
and the Mutt and the linkage thereof. As a response,
I am shifting gear from Ahobila Mutt to Ahobilam
and I am presenting to the readers a summary capsule
of Ahobila Kshetramahatmyam which appeared in
Vedanta Deepikai during 1914-15. This article was
written by the famous scholar Vidwan Chetlur
Narasimhachariar.
I prostrate before Sage Vyasa who has brought this
to light to us via recording the conversations of the
great sages of yore in his Brahmaanda Purana which
is one of the greatest puranas written by him more
than 5000 years ago. Veda Vyasa starts his
Brahmaandapurana by saying I prostrate before Lord
Narayana and tell about his greatness
(Maahaatmyam).

m Nwn Y{ z@ tz o ooz \tyzo@@

He begins with the anecdote of revered sages
seeking knowledge from Sage Narada on the banks
of Ganga. O! Revered Sage, you are a great devotee
of Lord Narayana and you know about his greatness
and have power to uplift people in this world from
their worldly bindings and take to Lord Narayanas
abode. In the past Lord Brahma told about various
Punyakshetras on this sacred land of Bharat. We
heard about sacred rivers and water bodies, sacred
caves, forests and mountains such as Sri Mushnam,
Venkatachalam, Saalagramam, Naimishaaranyam,
Pushkaram, Sri Rangam, Vrushabhadri, Narayanaadri,
Ananthashayanam, Thirukkurungudi, Bilvadri,
Malayaadri, Harashapaharam, Simhadri, Ahobilam
etc. Later this great Mahatmyam (greatness of
kshetrams) was told by Vrishabha Maharishi to Sage
Kapila, Kapila told this to sage Purukuthsa and
Purukuthsa told to Sage Kanaada. At that time Ahobila
Mahathmyam was told very well, but because we
were distracted by our duties we could not be attentive
and lost several details. Oh! Sage Narada, we are
now interested to know in detail about the Ahobila
Kshetramaahatmyam please enlighten us about this.
We are longing for the enlightenment.
To this Saga Narada responded with great bliss and
smile on his face. He said Oh! Sages Shaounaka,
Athri and other great Sages, Lord Brahma created
several divyakshetrams on this earth. They all have
various greatnesses.
Among the great
divyakshetrams Avanthi, Kurukshetra, Prayaga,
Devadaaruvanam, Prayaga is the greatest which can
wash all the sins of human beings. In this Prayaga
30,000 crore punyatheerthams (sacred water) join
in on every Amavasya day. But around Ahobila
Nrusimha for around 3 yojana wide and 3 yojana
long distance the places are hundred times more
powerful than Gaya, Kashi and Prayaga. One has
to go to Gaya to satisfy the ancestors (pithrus),

- M.V.Soundara Rajan

to prayaga for self purification, to Kashi for getting

the Taraka mantra (mantra to cross the ocean of
Samsara), but in Ahobilam it is all in one. The
kshteram is a personification of Ashtakshara, Dvaya
and Charamasloka and when a devotee goes to
worship in that kshetra one gets a clear feeling that
Lord Narasimha is here to protect and uplift him
or her from all samsara difficulties. Stay in Kaashi
for thousands of yugas, in Prayaga for 20 yugas,
in Gaya for hundered years is equal to one days
stay at Ahobilam. To feed ten thousand people in
Gaya, one lakh people in Prayaga, two lakh people
in Kaashi is equivalent to feed one mouthful to one
person in Ahobilam. The Garudadri which is part
of Ahobilakshetram is of utmost purity and liked
by Lord Narasimha. This Kshetram is also known
as Veerakshetram as Lord Nrisimha killed the demon
king Hiranyakashipu here single handedly by his
Veera or Valour. The pillar from which Lord has
emerged has become mountain like after several
lakhs of years. In order to give respite to the anger
of the Lord, the Devas brought Ganga from their
abode and gave a sacred bath to Lord Narasimha
after the killing of the Demon king and that has
become Bhavanashini. It will cleanse all sins of people
who worship this Lords Abhishekajalam. Knowing
about the greatness of the deities and the
punyatheerthams, all the sages and devas have shifted
their abode to Ahobilakshetram as per Brahmandapurana.
Koormapurana, Paadmapurana, Vishnupurana and
Mahabharatha have all described Ahobilam elaboratedly.
The punyakshetram contains nine shrines

Jwala Ahobila Malola Kroda Karanja Bhargava.
Yogananda Kshatravata Pavana Nava Moorthayaha
The shrine was protected for generations by pious
and religious sages, kings and devotees even during
the Muslim invasion period. After the fall of Kakatiya
Dynasty and defeat of Prataparudra Gajapathi, his
generals Hari Hara and Bukka Raya established
the Vijayanagar empire as a retaliation to the subdued
Hindu community and brought back lost glory to
the Hindus and their temples due to foreign invasions.
When the Vijayanagar empire expanded under Bukka
Raya and later under Devaraya the entire Andhra,
Telengana, part of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil
Nadu were part of their empire. Ahobilam shrine
became their main deity. Other notable dynasty for
whom Lord Narasimha and Ahobilam was the main
deity was the Kalinga dynasty of Orissa and
subsequent rulers who co-existed in the Vijayagara
period. During the period of the Great Harihara Raya
II Ahobila Mutt was established by Sri Adi Van
Satakopa Yatheendra Mahadesikan, the first Jeer
of Sri Ahobila Mutt. The legend says that
Srinivasacharya, son of Kidambi Kesavacharya who
was born on 18th August 1379 CE at Thirunarayanapuram
(Melkote), Karnataka became a great scholar and
an ardent devotee of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha at

Ahobilam through his preceptor Ghtaikashatham

Ammal (grandson of famous NadadoorAmmal) who
was the greatest scholar in those days and an ardent
devotee to Lord Laksmi Narasimha. During his stay
at Ahobilam he had a an ordainment from Lord
Lakshmeenarasimha who gave him Sanyasam directly
from Bramcharya and gave him the name Satakopa
Jeeyar. The Lord commanded him to take one of
the Utsava Moorthis, Malaola Lakshmi Narasimhan
and said to the Jeer Go from door to door taking
me with you and administer to the well being
of the disciples. Be their Guru and ensure their
Samasrayanam and Bharanyasam to purify them
with my (Vishnus) emblems of the conch and
the discus and instruct them in the Ashtaksharam,
Dwayam, and Charama Slolka.
Influenced by the Jeer's devotion and by grace of
Lord Malola, King Harihara Raya II became his
disciple and later all the Vijayanagar kings became
his disciples. Devaraya I, Devaraya II and Proudha
Devaraya all patronized the Lords ordinance with
devotion. The Jeer swamy travelled from Sethu
(southern tip) to Himachalam (northen) tip of this
country propagating Lord Lakshmi Narasimha cult.
It became very acceptable throughout India. U.P.
Rajasthan,Orissa and Bengal were also the disciples
of this great Mutt. Since then many kings of the
Vijayanagar patronized the Ahobila mutt. Sri Krishna
Deva Raya was the greatest king and disciple of
Sri Ahobila Mutt. He had initiation under Parankusa
Yatheendra Mahadesikan the 6thpattam Jeer of Sri
Ahobila Mutt. Many of his courtiers such as Allasani
Peddanna, Mahamantri Timmarusu were all disciples
of the Mutt. Sri Annamacharya, the famous devotee
and divine musician was a great disciple of Sri Ahobila
Mutt. The Vijayanagar kings moved to Penugonda
after the Tallikota war and they were always praying
and deriving divine intervention and strength from
Ahobilam temple. When the Golconda Army
ransacked Ahobilam after the Tallikota war the local
disciples joined hands and under the leadership of
7th Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt and the then Vijayanagar
King in Araveedu clan Tirumala Raya and his two
great generals, drove away the invaders and restored
the glory of Ahobilam. This is inscribed in the
Jayastambha in front of the Lower Ahobilam Temple.
Tirumala Raya went on to re-establish the lost glory
of Vijayanagar regaining control of majority of the
land in Andhra, Rayalseema, Karnataka and Tamil
Nadu. Araveedu clan were on seat till the princely
states have been merged with Indian union post
independence. The Ahobilam and Ahobila Mutt have
been completely protected and patronized by the
disciples of Ahobila Mutt for over several centuries
and these disciples are all over the villages near
Ahobilam, Rayalaseema, Andhra, Telangana and all
over India and the world. The Sri Ahobilam temple
is associated with the very foundation of the Mutt
and is an essential and integral part of the Mutt.
Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple Ahobilam
is the principle seat of Sri Ahobila Mutt a
denominational institution and is administered by
the Mattadhipathi in succession for several centuries
right from the founding of the Mutt as per the religious

mandate of the principal deity Lord Lakshmi

NarasimhaSwamy Himself. The Mattadhipathis in
succession have been carrying out the command
of the principal deity to the first Mattadhipathi Sri
Adivan Satagopan Yatindra Maha Desikan for several
centuries with utsavamurthy of the temple Sri Malola
Narasimhan and performing Samasrayanam and
Bharanyasam to the devotees. The Mutt which is
currently administered by the 46th Jeer has branches
across India and chapters in many parts of the world.
The Mutt also administers many of the Divya Desham
Temples of which the Sri Ahobilam Temple of Sri
Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy in Andhra Pradesh
occupies the preeminent position.
There has been many attempts by the several secular
governments to take over this Temple which is
unconstitutional, detrimental to religious faith of the
devotees and non-secular in action. During one such
questions during March 22, 2001, the then Endowments
Minister Dandu Sivaramaraju belonging to TDP in
the floor of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly admitted
that the take over is not possible without constitutional
amendment. He said that it was wrong to categorize
Sri Ahobilam Temple as a normal temple and the Jeer
as a normal Hereditary trustee of the Temple. He
admitted that this is a denominational temple as per
the law. Constitution of India is coming in the way
for takeover of the temple through appointment of
Executive Officer under Sec 29 and non-hereditary
trust board under Sec 15 as any attempt to takeover
through amendment of the Act would require assent
of the Central Government as the matter is pertaining
to concurrent list. It is submitted to the Readers of
VAK that the glorious Sri Ahobilam Temple continues
to be a takeover target of the State Government as
evidenced by the unusual manner in which a notification
for constitution of a non-hereditary trust board under
Sec 15 was given through G.O.Ms. No. 346 Revenue
(Endowments-II) Department dated 17.10.2014. In
response the Mutt gave a representation to the Honble
Governor bringing to his notice the judgment of this
Honble Court which would prevent constitution of a
non-hereditary trust board under Sec 15 and appointment
of an Executive Officer under Sec 29 of the Act. The
Government subsequently withdrew the said notification
for constitution of trust board through G.O.Ms.No 386
Revenue (Endowments-II) Department dated 19.11.2014
noting that there is no such tradition of a non-hereditary
trust board for Sri Ahobilam Temple. It is a fact that
the temple administration is functioning under a constant
threat of such Government takeover attempts through
Sec 15 and Sec 29 and other provisions of the Act.
Not only Sri Ahobilam Temple but many other such
temples are a constant takeover target of the State
Government in the way that the provisions of the Act
are being applied. VAK appeals to all the Devotees
of Ahobilam and of the Mutt to stand by the Jeer in
his attempt to safe guard the Religion, culture, sanctity
and traditions of the great Punyakshetra. VAK also
appeals to Secular Government to exhibit prudence
and make conscious decisions according to the constitution
of India. We will be bringing to the readers more on
Ahobilam Mahatmyam in the coming editions of VAK
(to be continued)
as indicated earlier.

NOT TRANSFERABLE
C. S. Rangarajan
We should have a Utsavam during
Samprokshana and take the idols in Garuda Vahanam
procession proposed the Local Political Leader.
Renovations for the Lord Narasimha Temple
in Nellore District had just been completed successfully
and Pundits have fixed dates for Samprokshana or
installation ceremony. All necessary arrangements
are being made for the same. This proposal was a
part of the discussion going on in the Renovation
committee meeting.
It is a very good idea. Let us do it sir, seconded
the Executive Officer who was waiting to please the
leader always.
The Garuda Vahana is in a damaged stage and
needs repairs .sir the Pradhana Archaka interrupted the plan.
Well, we can use the Golden Garuda Vahana
of Ranganatha Temple in the nearby village. It is lying
idle only, we do not have any Utsavams for the Temple.
added the EO.
Can we do it? Whose permission should we
take? asked the leader.
No need of any permission Sir! I am the EO
of that Temple also. I will send a messenger to get
the Vahana immediately, promised the EO and sent
his departmental messenger to the Village, who after
reaching there and asking the Archaka phoned back
saying that the Archaka was refusing to give the Golden
Garuda Vahana.
The EO called for his official Jeep and along
with the Local leader proceeded in a rage to the
Ranganatha Swamy Temple.
Evening Pujas were going on in the Ranganatha
Temple in the Village.
The Temple EO, the local leader and a few
of his followers walked inside the Temple and The
EO called for the Archaka who was busy performing
archana to the Lord for some Devotees.
Archaka completed the archana and came to
the EO with Teertham and Satari.
All of this later. How can you refuse to give
the Garuda Vahana when I, who am the EO had sent
message to hand it over through the attender?
The Archaka understood the background
immediately and started trying to explain.
To use one Temples vahanas for another
Temple would be against the Agamas and it will
amount to sacrilege. Vahanas once dedicated to one
deity cannot be used for another - sir.
The EO was feeling annoyed. How could this
archaka who is a menial servant and who has to obey
his orders speak out openly, that too, in front of him?
Now, Pujarigaru, is Lord Ranganatha, Vishnu

or not? Narasimha is also one of Vishnus avataras.

Isnt it true?
Yes sir! But the Puja vidhanal are different
in both the Temples and
Stop there, you archakas are taking us for a
ride. If you want to, confuse by telling us stories and
preventing us from taking the Vahana, you are mistaken.
Sir, I am only trying to prevent the disaster
by doing this...
Nothing will happen. Let us have a darshan
of Lord Narasimha in this Garuda Vahana. Ranganatha
will also be happy that his unused Vahana is being
put to use.
Open the Vahana sala and give the Vahana.
This is my order, shouted the EO.
Swamy, please protect us from any disaster.
The archaka prostrated before the Deity and handed
over the key of the Vahana sala.
The Vahana was transported to the Narasimha
swamy Temple and the Samprokshana was performed,
After the samprokshana, the Golden Garuda
Vahana was decorated well and Lord Narasimha was
made to sit on it and the procession was to begin.
Before the start of the procession, Karpura Harathi
(Camphor flame) was to be done.
The archaka took two small pieces of Camphor
in a brass plate and lit the Harathi. When he started
performing the Harathi amidst loud Nadaswaram and
reciting of Veda mantras, the Garuda vahana caught
fire and the flames started engulfing the Pandal.
Within seconds, a big fire accident had occurred
and many were injured and a few devotees fell victims
to the fire. The Garuda Vahana had melted.
The injured were rushed to Chennai for treatment
and were visited by the then C.M. An inquiry was
also ordered into the causes for the incident.
Other reasons like pandal being thatched etc.,
were being examined but the transfer of Vahana was
not related to the incident as the administrators
did not believe that this could cause such a disaster.
Let us look at a similar incident that happened
in Tamil Nadu.
In Chennai, after renovations to one of the
City Temples due to lack of Garuda Vahana devotees
had approached the Trustee of a Temple in nearby
town who happened to be a Mathadhipathi.
They sought permission to take the Garuda
Vahana from the Temple. The Trustee gave permission
and gave a letter to the local administrator to hand
over the Vahana.
The Devotees thanked the Trustee and took a
Lorry to get the huge Vahana. When they reached the
Temple, they were surprised to see a huge crowd outside.

They approached the administrator who refused

to give the Vahana. Vahana dedicated to my lord
is for Him only and not for any other deity. Please
return immediately, otherwise this crowd will be
uncontrollable, said the administrator sternly.
But your trustee has given us permission,
the people from Chennai tried to convince him.
We have great respect for him but this order
is against the Agamas and traditions. We are reluctantly
disobeying this order, said the administrator.
The devotees of Chennai, sensing the seriousness
of the situation returned with the empty lorry.
Both the incidents are of similar nature. However,
in the first one the EO being the authority to administer
the Temple within the purview of sastras and agamas
used his high-handedness and with scant respect
to the scriptures, transferred the vahana, which resulted
in the fire accident.
In the second incident, though the administrator
of the Temple was a staunch disciple of the
Mathadhipathi, he chose to disobey the order as it
was against sastras and agamas.

According to the thoughtless 1987 Endowments

Act that has been implemented, Archakas can be
transferred from one Temple to another. They are
treated as Secular staff for the sake of transfers
only. These transfers are being done even to
archakas of small temples that are supposed to
fend for themselves as they lack income. Recently
in one of the villages, the Revenue Officials, and
the Police force was used to brutally implement the
transfer orders against a weak, poor and helpless
archaka!
Just as Vahanas that have been dedicated
to one deity cannot be transferred, so also archakas.
After the Pranaprathishta of the deity during the
installation ceremony in the Temple, archaka is
dedicated for serving that deity. He has to serve only
that deity and should not be transferred. The 1987
Legislation consists of such innumerable thoughtless,
disastrous and damaging sections which is nothing
but an oppressive force to destroy the Temple system.
It is for the public to think whether we need such
a Legislation to demolish the already extinct temple
tradition.

NEWS 'Vruksharohanam' at Chilukuri Balaji temple

Chilukuri Balaji Temple organizers distributed 500
saplings on Sunday in the name of 'Vruksharohanam'.
The devotees made pradakshinas around the temple by
carrying trees. On the occasion, the organizers said that
they were striving to make the devotees to plant five
saplings each. On Sunday, devotees thronged
Bhadrachalam Rama temple and echoed the
surroundings with the Rama Namam chants. The
devotees came in huge numbers as the summer holidays
were ending on Sunday.
Vruksharohanam : The devotees from Telugu states and
neighboring states visited Rama temple and three hours
time took for the darshan. The priests have conducted
Sparsha
Pushparchana
and
special
Panchamruthabhishekalu along with Nithya Kalyanam.
Yadagirigutta temple too witnessed huge rush on Sunday.
Four hours time took for the darshan to the devotees and
two hours time for the special darshan. The officials
stopped vehicles entering to top of the hill.
Basara temple also witnessed the flood of devotees on
Sunday. About 25,000 devotees had a darshan on Sunday.
Devotees took three hours time for the darshan. Parents
rushed for the Aksharabhyasam on Sunday along with
their children.

All should take a green vow to plant saplings
The photograph (green vow) published on the front page
of The Hans India was simply awesome. I personally feel,
that in a few years from now, The Hans India would become
one of the most sought after newspapers in many major
cities, for its elegant reporting and photographs.
All Telugu people in Andhra Pradesh (especially those
living in the 9 coastal districts) should also take the green
vow in Lord Balaji temples to plant a sapling each, and
also nurture it. Nurturing the plants in apartment complexes
may be asking for too much. A heavy green tax should be
imposed on all existing apartment complexes, and the
money collected can be utilised to plant 5 or 6 'Raavi' and

'Marri' well-grown saplings (preferably Marri, as leaf fall is

less in winter) in all parks and one sapling in the centre of
large traffic islands, behind the statues. This suggestion
is being made, as all coastal cities could be made tourist
paradises, if and only if the temperatures are within
"bearable" limits for foreigners.

BJP, Cong. see conspiracy in auction of lands
The sale fetched Rs. 22 lakh per acre against the govt
rate of Rs. 50 lakh
The BJP has alleged that the sale of 83 acres belonging
to the Sadavarti Satram of Sri Amaralingeswara Swamy
temple (at Amaravati in Guntur district) situated between
Chennai and Madurai in Tamil Nadu is illegal as they could
not be sold as per inscriptions found there. But the Chief
Ministers Office itself cleared the decks for auctioning the
said lands.
Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, BJP city
president D. Umamaheswara Raju said 4000 acres had
been donated to the choultry, which is situated nearly 200
metres from the historic temple, by Raja Vasireddy
Venkatadri Naidus daughter-in-law Chirumamilla Venkata
Lakshmi Narasamma.
The lands were not to be sold by any means as the donors
had wished and they even got it etched in stone. The
choultry was taken over by the Endowments Department
about 15 years ago.
The BJP leader said of the 4000 acres, 473 acres were
situated near Chennai and except 100 acres, the rest was
encroached. The A.P. CMO had recently issued orders for
auctioning 83 acres and the sale fetched Rs.22 lakh per
acre against the government rate of Rs.50 lakh.
Mr. Umamaheswara Raju alleged that a TDP MLA from
Guntur district and an Endowments Department official
were behind the sale and they had the backing of some
senior TDP leaders.
Meanwhile, a delegation of senior Congress leaders led
by their State president N. Raghuveera Reddy submitted a

memorandum to the Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan in

Hyderabad seeking cancellation of the auction. Mr.
Raghuveera Reddy said a party committee led by MLC C.
Ramachandraiah visited Thalambur village where the
choultry lands exist, and found that the land had been
encroached and put for auction as per a pre-planned
conspiracy. The A.P. government involved a ruling party MLA
in the transaction and basically it did not issue any G.O. that
should be in conformity with a Cabinet decision to sell the
lands. The auction should be conducted at the choultry
office in Amaravati and not in a secretive manner in Tamil
Nadu, which amounted to blatant violation of norms, Mr.
Raghuveera Reddy added.

Appointment of woman priest caught in red tape
The practice has been in vogue since 1870 at a temple at
Suryaraopet in Kakinada A unique practice of inducting
women priests at the Nookalamma vari temple for
decades has come to a halt, thanks to the Endowments
Department decision to outsource the services.
The temple at Suryaraopet in Kakinada has seen women
priests since 1870. Madada Kanchana, who is claiming
hereditary rights, is a fifth generation priest. The tradition
of handing over priesthood began with Bade Ammanna.
She performed duties as asadi (priest) from 1870 to 1923
at the temple of Nookalamma, a village deity.
The idol of the deity was unearthed in 1870 when
labourers were digging a tank to meet drinking water
requirements. A temple was constructed, and the Dutch
officials asked Bade Lakshmaiah, who was serving them,
to take care of the temple. His wife Ammanna performed
rituals on his behalf. The priesthood was passed on to
daughters since then: Bade Appayamma (1923 to 1977),
Bade Kodandamma (1977) and Bade Kasiratnam was
the last to hold the post till her death in 2015.
Speaking to The Hindu , Ms. Kanchana said she had applied
for the post soon after her mothers demise and was running
from pillar to post to get it. It appears the government was
deliberately discontinuing the practice, she said.
We want to keep the tradition of women priests alive. I
underwent training in performing temple rituals under the
tutelage of my mother. I also passed devatha agama
examination, she said.
The endowments officials, however, said she was not
eligible for compassionate appointment as her mother
was not a time scale employee. But, Archaka Sangham
president Peddinti Rambabu said she was eligible as
per GO 1357 issued in 2011. The government was paying
consolidated salary saying the revenues were not sufficient
to pay scales though the Supreme Court had ordered pay
scale salaries in 1997. Now they cannot take shelter under
the rule that compassionate appointments were given
only for time scale employees, he said. Endowments
Deputy Commissioner Kakinada Ch. Hanumantha Rao
said Ms. Kanchanas application was rejected by the
Endowments Commissioner.
Hyderabads popular Chilkur Balaji temple priest S.
Rangarajan, who is spearheading a movement for
protection of temples, said that the right to archakatvam is
a fundamental right which the Supreme Court has upheld.

Bharat Ratna for PVN makes sense only if we give respect to his wisdom
Shri P.V. Narasimha Raos visionary 1966 Endowments Act was repealed by AP
Govt in 1987 in thoughtless hurry with devastating effect on Temple System. The
Legislature rectified it somewhat by the 2007 amendment which was noted by the SC.
Even the Rules to implement the same have not been approved for 10 years.
In the year 1965, the Andhra Pradesh State
Government proposed to amend and consolidate the
laws relating to the Hindu Religious Endowments
and Charitable Institutions. Consequently, a Bill
drafted by the legislative section of the Law
Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh
was published in the Andhra Pradesh Gazette
extraordinary on 6.8.1965 and was introduced in the
Legislative assembly on the same day. Sri P.V.
Narasimha Rao, the then Minister for Law and
Endowments of the State of Andhra Pradesh moved
a motion on 14.8.1965 to refer the said Bill to a
Joint Select Committee of the two houses and the
same was adopted on 16.8.1965. The Legislative
Council after full discussion concurred with the said
motion on 17.8.1965 and a message to that effect
was announced in the Legislative Assembly on
20.8.1965. Thereafter, a Select Committee
consisting of 21 members from the Andhra Pradesh
Legislature commenced the consideration of the
draft bill on 8.9.1965. The Committee held 30
meetings out of which 8 sittings were devoted to
recording of oral evidence and receiving written
representations and 22 sittings were devoted to the
clause by clause consideration of the Bill. Dr.
Soundararajan also gave evidence lasting 2.5 Hours
which was published by the Legislative Assembly
Secretariat. A thoroughly revised Bill which emerged
from deliberations lasting for almost 10 months was
submitted by the Select Committee to the
Legislature on 3.6.1966. Thereafter the Andhra
Pradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions
and Endowments Act was passed by the State
Legislature in 1966 and it received the assent of the
President and was placed in the Statute Book in
1966, This Act was in force till 1987.
As contrasted with the elaborate procedure of thread
bear discussion, the Act of 1987 was passed in

unusual haste. The Bill running into 178 cyclostyled

pages having 160 sections grouped in 15 chapters
and three schedules was introduced in the
Legislative Assembly on 4.4.1987. Eventhough, the
Bill contained the provisions with the intention to
make far reaching changes drastically departing
from the traditional practices of the Hindu
institutions based on custom and usage, no indepth
discussion took place before passing of the Bill.
The House discussed the Bill from 4PM to 9PM on
9th April, 1987 and the Opposition walked out in the
end. The Minister replied to the debate from 9PM,
and later the Speaker put sections (2) to (160) to
vote in one bunch, because the Opposition
Members who had given notices of amendments
to these clauses were not present in the House to
move them and declared that they were adopted by
the House. He then put Sec (1) to vote and declared
the Bill passed.
SC Noted How Legislature Rectified its Error This
petition was filed in 1997 for reconsideration of the
judgment in A.S. Narayana Deekshitulu v. State of
Andhra Pradesh and others (1996) 9 SCC 548.
".....During the pendency of the petition,
Legislature of the State of Andhra Pradesh
amended the Principal Act, i.e., Andhra Pradesh
Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and
endowments Act, 1987 (for short, the 1987 Act)
and restored the status of Archakas as was
obtaining prior to the enactment of 1987 Act. In
view of the above development, this petition is
disposed of as infructuous leaving the questions
raised in the main petition open to be decided in an
appropriate case. It is also made clear that this
order shall not affect the Reference made vide
judgment in A. Ramaswamy Dikshitulu v.
Government of Andhra Pradesh and others reported
in (2004) 4 SCC 661."
