Rössing Foundation’s success draws

international attention

The Rössing Foundation   

The Rössing Foundation was once

again globally hand-picked as a best
practice Community Sustainable
Development organisation with a visit
by the Lembaga Pengembangan
Masyarakat Amungme dan Kamoro
(LPMAK) Foundation from Papua,
Indonesia.

Papua is the largest province of

Indonesia, comprising of the most
western half of the island of New
Guinea.

The purpose of the visit was to

understand how the Rössing
Foundation operates and to learn
from programmes currently running
in the Erongo region and the rest of
Namibia. Part of the visit was also
to identify any programmes from the
Rössing Foundation that LPMAK
could replicate as they deem fit to
their situation and dynamics.
The delegates were made up of
the LPMAK Foundation staff and
leaders from Papua. They had
an opportunity to learn from the

Job well done by our Transport team
On Thursday last week an
accident occurred when two
vehicles were involved in a head-
on collision on the Swakopmund
road. The first vehicles on the
scene were two Rössing buses.
The drivers immediately pulled
safely off the road as not to
cause any additional hazards
to other road users and went to
assist the accident casualties.
Emergency response teams
were immediately contacted for
assistance. One vehicle involved
Rössing employees saving lives
The Blood Transfusion Service of
Namibia conducted their second
blood donation clinic at Rössing
last week.
Willy Matthys from
Instrumentation said, “I have
been donating blood for the past
10 years because there is a
blood shortage in the country”.
Another blood donor, Alden
Cloete from Instrumentation,
said, “I am a type O blood donor
therefore my blood is in demand,
because I can donate to A, B, AB
and O groups.”
The Blood Transfusion Service
conducts its clinic on-site three
times a year. The next clinic will
be held in June.

in the accident started to burn
with the driver still trapped by the
brake and clutch pedals.
While the fire was extinguished
two other employees freed the
driver’s legs and moved the
person away from the vehicle.
The Rössing team assisted the
other person and waited until
the emergency response team
arrived, handed over, and then
continued their journey to the
mine.
Employees are encouraged
to participate in this life saving
exercise. Next time it might be
YOU in need of blood.

The positive outcomes from this
accident are:
1. The quick response prior to
the emergency team’s arrival
saved a life.
2. The fire was extinguished
before extensive damage
occurred.
3.Our trained first aiders used
correct procedure without
causing additional injuries to the
patient.
4. Passengers not required to
assist were asked to remain on
the bus and thus not increasing
additional risk to other road
users.
5. Other Rössing buses passed
the accident scene as they saw
that assistance was already
given.

Obituary - Fawz Woodman friendly, supportive and helpful
Fawz Woodman passed away
peacefully on Thursday morning
after a long and valiant battle
with cancer. She will be sorely

 Biodiversity and development
2010 has been proclaimed
by the United Nations as the
International Year of Biodiversity
to increase awareness of the
importance of biodiversity for
sustainable development.
The Ministry of Environment
and Tourism and the German
Ministries for Economic Co-
operation and Development
(BMZ/GTZ) organised activities
such as the National Biodiversity
Action Day, to promote events
that highlight the importance of
ecosystems and show examples
of successful sustainable use of
biodiversity.
The National Biodiversity Action
Day was held at Brandberg from
7 to 9 May and participants from
all walks of life (local residents
from the communities, schools,
museums, environmental
groups, businesses, politicians,
scientists, journalists, etc) were
invited to participate in the
event and to jointly analise a
previously defined region with its
ecosystem.

Four Rössing employees,

represented Rössing.
The Brandberg was chosen as
the location because of its high
number of endemic species and
its diverse ecosystems, which is
an excellent example not only for
Namibia’s biodiversity but also
for community based natural
resource management by the
Tsiseb Conservancy.
During the event, scientists
and local experts worked in
six groups in the area and
exchanged their views with
the participants. The event
was also used as an example
of how biodiversity in the past
was, and still is today, essential
for people’s livelihoods. The
activities mainly took place in and
around the White Lady Lodge
area.

The various themes included:

The event created public
awareness on a national level
and will be fed into a global
mosaic on ecosystem services
and their impact on human well-
being.
The Ministry of Environment
and Tourism, GTZ, UNDP, the
Polytechnic of Namibia, and
the University of Namibia have
planned additional events for the
rest of the year to celebrate the
year of Biodiversity.

Be Active - Highlights from week one and two
We are slowly progressing
into the second week of the
Be Active challenge initiative.
The e-Rössing Bulletin caught
up with a few employees
to get their views on the
activity. With it comes mixed
comments and feelings of the
event.
This is what some of the

“There are several benefits
including re-emphasising the
approach to do a task safely!
It can improve our health and
hopefully set a new ‘lifestyle’ for
some of us.
The synergy with safety is that
we approach even this task with
a mindset to perfrom it without
injury. This includes ensuring
we have the correct PPE, in
particular footwear.”

(Challengers) and can already
feel the difference.
The only hiccup is the pedometer,
which is totally unreliable.
I hope that this challenge will
become a part of life for all
participants. It should actually be
an ongoing programme and not
for 10 weeks only.”

“Despite that fact that I regulary
exercise, I used to slow down
over the weekends, this
commitment is forcing me to get
out and be active even over the
weekends.
My morning starts with a brisk
2.5km walk each day.
It is a good initiative; I know
a number of people who do
encourage each other daily. I
also realise that this will be the
first time around that a number
of us will not have to worry about
getting the pre-winter body back,
once summer is here (seeing
that this challenge takes place in
winter).
Advice to those who are not
active?
Remember you have one body
only - please take care of it, it is
one of the greatest investments
you can make, not only for
yourself but also for your family.
