1600s

School was meant to save souls, provided path to heaven; reading, writing, morals were all
revolved around the bible (page 121)
Massachusetts Law of 1647; every town of 50 households must appoint and pay for a teacher
of reading and writing, Every town of 100 households must provide a grammar school to
prepare kids for university (page 122)
Blacks and natives were typically denied, though in rare cases quakers offered to build special

Dame schools were private schools taught by women, as a daycare for parents that were

Morril Land Grant College Acts 1862 and 1890, established 69 institutes of higher learning

NCLB 2001, placed government standards on schools and required more qualified teachers,
giving penalties to schools that didnt meet certain goals, and could fire teachers if it became
too bad. Allowed more freedom to parents in choosing where they would like to have their

Federal Government changes NCLB allowing states greater freedom in determining how to
evaluate teachers and students, 2011 to present (page 149)
