St Evdokimos of Cappadocia
St Evdokimos, was born and raised in Cappadocia (Asia Minor), during the ninth
century reign of Emperor Theophilos (829-842).
His parents, Basil and Evdokia, were pious Christians and being an illustrious
family, they were known to the Emperor and his court.
They raised their son ...in discipline and admonition of the Lord...), steadfastly
nurturing in his soul sincere Faith and Holy Virtues. (EPHESIANS 6:4)
The Righteous Life of St Evdokimos and his parents was devoted to pleasing God
and serving their neighbours.
Having sworn a Sacred Vow to remain celibate and chaste, St Evdokimos strictly
avoided all women and took care not to even look their way. He would speak
only with his own closest family members whom he greatly respected.
Emperor Theophilos valued his genuine Virtue and talents, so he appointed St
Evdokimos as Governor of Chorziane, Armenia.
Fulfilling his duty as a Faithful servant of God, St Evdokimos governed the people
justly and with kindness. He concerned himself with the those who were poor
and destitute, with orphans and widows, and defended the people from harm
or criticism, while all his Christian Labours of Love were performed in secret
being known only to God.
St Evdokimos pleased God by his Blameless Life in Christ until his Repose at the
young age of 33.
Before he had Fallen Asleep in our Lord, as he lay on his bed, St Evdokimos had
asked to be dressed in the garments in which they would bury him.
When it had been done, St Evdokimos dismissed everyone before entreating our
Lord to permit no one to witness his passing, just as no one had seen his secret
Labours of Love that he had performed in the Name of Christ throughout his
earthly life.
Immediately after the peaceful Repose of St Evdokimos, innumerable Miracles
occurred at the site of his grave, and many were Blessed with both physical and
Spiritual Healings.
Eighteen months later, his mother, Evdokia arrived from Constantinople to venerate
his Relics. On her instructions the stone slab was removed and the casket was
excavated and opened, whereupon to the astonishment of all witnesses, the
face of St Evdokimos was perfectly preserved as though he had simply fallen
asleep, and the sweet fragrance of Sanctity emanated from the Holy Relics.
St Evdokimos incorruptible body was redressed with new garments and gently
placed in a new casket, for Evdokia wished to transfer her beloved son to
Constantinople.
However, the Kharsian people refused to allow their Beloved Saint to depart from
them and only after a certain amount of time had passed was Joseph the
Hieromonk, who had lived and served at the gravesite of St Evdokimos, allowed
to accompany the Holy Relics to Constantinople, where they were placed in a
silver reliquary in a church in honour of or Most Holy Lady, Theotokos, which
had been built by the devout parents of St Evdokimos.
St Evdokimos is considered by Faithful Orthodox Christians as being one of our
special Holy Protectors and Intercessors with God for our Harmonious and
Sanctified Family Life in Christ, for he was, as his name implies, truly successful
in every Sacred Virtue.
May his memory be Eternal and may he unceasingly Intercede with Christ our God
for the sake of our Eternal Salvation, Love and Peace.
