As you ride on the Tamsui Line, you'll notice the

thriving urban landscapes giving way to riparian
scenery around Guandu Station. Tamsui Station, the
last stop on the line, is located on the Tamsui estuary:
This area was once a vibrant port town. Though no
longer a commercial harbor, Tamsui, with its abundant
historic buildings and superb coastal vistas, has
thanks to the MRT become one of Gre ater Ta ipei's
most popular tourist destinations.

Travel Route
While wandering around Tamsui, don't miss Tamsui Old Street and the
riverside walk. Tamsui's numerous unique, historic buildings are worth at
least a day's visit, and if you don't wish to walk, the R26 bus can take you
to many of the town's main tourist sites. There are also ferries plying routes
between the Tamsui Ferry Pier, Bali Ferry Pier, and Fisherman's Wharf for a
change of scene.

The Douglas Lapraik & Co. Building, constructed in 1871,

is on the end section of Tamsui Old Street (Zhongzheng

and attracted a number of foreign trading companies. In contrast

to other foreign trading houses, as well as engaging in the tea and
camphor businesses, Douglas Lapraik & Co, were also involved in the
shipping business and once had a monopoly on the transport of goods
from South China to Taiwan. However, as times changed, the foreign

trading houses' fortunes faded and they became part of history, the
old buildings gradually forgotten. The Douglas Lapraik & Co. Building
has recently been restored by the city government and returned to its
former glory. As well as the restored exterior, inside there is a historical
document display space in which various
exhibitions are periodically held.

LOHAS Fun: MRT + Bicycle Travel

On either side of the Tamsui River are well-planned bicycle paths. Cyclists can bring
their own bicycles and start riding from Guandu, Zhulin or Hongshulin stations. There
are also bike rental kiosks close to each MRT station if you want to rent a bike, but
since there are not many that allow rental from point
A and drop-off at point B, some route planning may be
necessary.

Tamsui Golden Coast Bikeway ( )

The Tamsui riverside cycling path is a relatively easy bikeway, suitable for
adults and kids alike. You can start from Guandu or Hongshulin stations, riding

In the old days, Huwei (also spelled "Hobe") Fort was responsible for protecting
Tamsui Harbor. Just seeing the forti ed gate tower, whose inscription reads "Gate

Within the fort are alcoves that now display old photos and historical information.
The century-old Tamsui Itteki Memorial House is a newly opened tourist spot: It
was given to Taiwan by Japan as a token of friendship after the 921 Earthquake.
With its Japanese-style black-tile roof and wooden architecture, plus its tranquil

coming here, rst visit Wulai Old Street: Here you can try specialties such as stone
slab barbecue, wild boar sausages, and eggs boiled in hot-spring water. Check out
the Wulai Atayal Museum, then go for rides on the unique Wul ai Log Cart and

Bitan Suspension Bridge is the most prominent feature of the landscape. Spanning
the Xindian R iver, the footbridge connects Bitan's east and west shores. The west
shore is dominated by a vista of green mountains meeting the river, while the
east shore boasts a string of riverside restaurants. The bridge is illuminated come
nightfall, giving it an enchanting appearance. Paddleboats move to and fro along the
river: Swan boats preferred by couples and larger boats t for the whole family
allow for the quintessential Bitan experience. To the south of the footbridge is the
sole remaining human-powered ferry across the Xindian River: The ve-minute
ride is a rare old-time experience.

Half a day should be plenty of time to explore it. We suggest rst taking

where you can buy a box of azuki bean cakes. If you have more than a
day to spare, you can explore Bitan, then make a side trip to Wulai in the

Specialties of Tamsui
Tamsui offers a dazzling array of options for dining. There are two main zones:
Old Street (Zhongzheng Road) and the riverside walk. Old Street is famous
for a traditional local dish called agei: broth-soaked vermicelli wrapped in deepfried tofu skins and coated with fish paste, which are steamed and drizzled
with sauce. Other great snacks are sh balls, " iron eggs," and sh crackers. If you
get tired of walking around, you can quench your thirst and re-energize with
a cup of A-Ma's Plum Tea (135-3 Zhongzheng Rd.). Old-style bakeries abound
in Tamsui. Xinjiancheng Cakes (42 Gongming St.), Bei Stefan (81 Zhongzheng

traditional Taiwanese cakes popular with tourists. And a long
the riverside are numerous seafood restaurants and cafs:

The MRT's Xinzhuang Line runs through the districts of Xinzhuang and
Sanchong. Xinzhuang's convenient location next to the Tamsui River made
it one of the first parts of the Taipei area to develop. It prospered due
to trade in the reigns of the Qianlong and Jiaqing emperors in the Qing
Dynasty but its fortunes faded as the river silted up and the commercial
center of the Taipei area moved elsewhere. The old streets, historic temples,
and numerous long-established stores form its enchanting historic scenery
today. Walking the old streets allows visitors to get close to people's daily
lives. Xinzhuang doesn't only have historic sites, it also the nostalgic avor of
the life of times gone by.

This temple, the only city-designated historic site in Sanchong, enshrines the Five
Grains Emperor, the protector god of agriculture, who is also known as the Shen
Nong Emperor, so it's also called the Five Grains Emperor Temple. The name was
changed to Xianse Temple in the Japanese Colonial Period. The temple has a history
of over 200 years; it attracts numerous worshippers and is the local belief center. On
the 26th day of the fourth lunar month every year, the birthday of the Shen Nong
Emperor is celebrated, and the whole district takes part in the grand celebration.
A procession is also held, called the Sanchong Grand Festival. The two sides of the
temple were built by two different craftsmen in a kind of competition to see who
could do the nest work; the temple is the best preserved and nest of this type of
dui chang zuo building that is the work of two or more craftsmen in Taiwan.

Luzhou is known for qiezai mian (soup noodles), and since 2007 has been hosting an

Xinzhuang Temple Street is also known as Xinzhuang Old Street.
With a history spanning more than 300 years, the street is lined
with almost ten temples on a short stretch of a few hundred
meters, among them Ciyou Temple, Dazhong Temple, Wenchang
Temple, Wusheng Temple, and Guangfu Temple. All are heritage
sites still thriving as local religious and community hubs. The
street also has many century-old shops, including Lao Shun
Xiang Bakery, Ririyong Blacksmith Shop and the Xiangrenhe
Clock and Drum Factor y, all precious and increasingly rare
examples of traditional industries. When night falls the lights
come on around Xintai Road as a boisterous night-market comes to life, selling
shoes, decorations, toys, knick-knacks, tasty snacks and other foods. Close to Temple
Street are also numerous smaller lanes and alleys with a rich history, including
Theater Lane, Water-Carrying Lane, and Rice Market Lane. Also special is Chaojiang
Temple on Bijiang Street, because it combines elements of Southern Fujian, New
Baroque and Japanese architecture.

The districts of Zhonghe and Yonghe, served by the Zhonghe Line of the MRT,
are immigrant cities; the concentration of overseas Chinese from Myanmar
in the Huaxin Street area of Zhonghe led to the formation of Myanmar
Street, a street with a pronounced southeast Asian feel; quite a few overseas
Chinese from South Korea live on Zhongxing Street in Yonghe and Korea

Myanmar Street and Korea Street can be said to be microcosms of the

an exotic atmosphere, attracting many visitors who travel specially to taste the
exotic cuisine available or to buy imported goods.
