SomethingbadishappeningintheprovinceofGarzburgSouthAfrica.A
renegademercenaryoutfitoperatingoutofabaseknownas"OuterHeaven"
hasbeendevelopingadvancedweaponrytosellontheblackmarket.And
also,incidentally,tohelpthemtakeovertheworld(overachievers).
Theirheadmanisanunknownentity;nodescriptionsareavailablebeyond
thefactthathe'sanexsoldierofoutstandingcapibilitiesaswellasa
coldbloodedkiller.
Thisisoldnews.Yourgovernmenthasknownaboutthisenclavefor
sometime,andupuntilnow,deemedthemanoisybutmostlynonthreatening
nusianceatbest.Somethinghaschangedallthat,however.
ThisorganizationhaskidnappedDr.PettrovichMadnar,atoparms
developer,aswellashisdaughterEllen.Rumorhasitthattheyareusing
Ellenasahostagetoforcethegooddoctortocreateanultimateweapon,
codenamedMetalGear(http://www.neoseeker.com/metalgear/).Yourgovernmentcannolongerignorethepotential
dangereminatingfromOuterHeaven.Someone'sgottogointhere.Someone's
gottofindoutwhattheserenegadesareupto.Someone'sgottoputastop
toitall.And,youguessedit,thatsomeoneisyou.

2)WEAPONSANDEQUIPMENT
Youstartwithyourbarehandsandapackofcigarettes(thisgamehaving
beenmadebeforesmokingwasconsideredwayultramegatotallyuncool).
Fortunatlyforyou,thereisawidevarietyofhelpfulitemsthatyouwill
runacrosstoassistinyourcompletingthemission.
WEAPONS
FistsYourbasicweapon.Yourpunchesaren'tverypowerful
(anddon'tevenTHINKabouthittingabosstodeath).
Theupsideisthatyourbarehandsarealwayswithyou
andthey'resilent,allowingyoutomurderunsuspecting
guardswithoutalertingthewholebase.Punching,when
combinedwiththeironglove,alsoletsyoulocate
hiddendoors.
GrenadeLauncherThisweaponlobsexplosivesinalowarc.Itcanbe
usedtofireoverwalls.It'sparticularlyuseful
againstlarger,slowerenemies,buthaslimitswhen

dealingwithquickerfoes.6shotsperpickup.
HandGunLifedefinitlygetsmuchsweeterwhenyoufindthis
baby.Thehandgunfiresbulletsinastraightline
andwilltakedownguardsandtheirmuttsinone
hit.Stillnotthebestweaponfortakingdown
bosses,butmorethanadequateforlowlevelhouse
cleaning.Bulletsforthehandguncomein20rounds
perpickup.
MinePutoneoftheseonthegroundandthenwaitfor
someunsuspectingdopetowalkoveritandblast
themselvestopieces.Notaveryusefulweapon,
perhaps,butyoudoneedthesetotakeoutthetank.

PlasticExplosiveAnexplosivechargethatwill...um,explodeafter
planted.Asageneralweapon,itsusesareextremely
limited.However,thisistheonlythingthatcan
hurttheSuperComputer,soyoudokindofneed
them.5perpickup.
R.C.MissileRadiocontrolledmissilesthatoncefiredyou
controlthesewithyourdpad.Youcanmaneuverthem
aroundcorners,makethemdoubleback,orchasedown
individualenemieswiththesegems.Oneofthebest
antibossweaponsinthegame.5perpickup.
RocketLauncherFiresaverydamagingrocketinastraightlineat
yourenemies.Killsthingsveryquicklyandisawee
moredirectthanthegrenadelauncher.5shotsper
pickup.
SubMachineGunFiresshotslikethehandgunbutspraysthemoutin
anarc.Holddownthefirebuttonforcontinuous
fire(obviously).Greatweaponforclearinglarge,
wideroomsandprobablythebestguntohelpyouget
acrossthedesert.Aswiththehandgun,20rounds
perammopickup.
ITEMS
AntennaOnceinthesecondbuilding,yourradiotransmissions
willbejammed,preventingyoufromtalkingtoand
gettinginfofromyourvariouscontactsoutside.Pick
thisitemuptounjamyourtranscieverandgetback
ontheair.
AntidoteThedesertareaisinhabitedbyvenomusscorpions.One
hitfromtheseandyou'llbepoisoned,withyourlife
meterdrainingawayslowly.Thissimplywon'tdo.Use
theantidotetostopthepoisonfromkillingyou.Once
youhavethisitem,there'snolimittohowmanytimes
youcanuseitsodon'tworryaboutrunningout.
AmmoCratesTheseboxesreplenishtheammosupplyforallofthe
weaponsyoufire(handgun,rocketlauncher,etc.).
Pickinguponeboxwillsupplyammoforallofthe
weaponsyoucurrentlyposess.Inotherwords,graba
boxwhenyouhavethehandgunandthegrenade
launcher,andyou'llget20bulletsand6grenades.
ArmourBodyarmor(IliketheBritishspelling).Bodyarmor
protectsyoufromdamage.Notalldamage,mindyou,
butitdoesreducethedamageyouwilltakebyabout
half.It'sanicethingtohaveduringbossfightsor
inthelaterstagesofthegame,whenyouwillbe
dealingwithwaveuponwaveofguards.
BinocularsThesewillallowyoutoseeonescreeninany
directionfromyourcurrentlocation.Notahorribly
usefulitem,butkindofniceearlyinthegameorif
you'veneverplayedMetalGear(http://www.neoseeker.com/metalgear/)before.Becarefulwhen
usingthesehowever;theprogrammingissuchthatthe
gamewillunderstandbinocularuseasyourcharacter
havingmovedtothenextscreen.Inotherwords,if
therewereenemiesintheareawhereyou'restanding
whenyouusethisitem,theywillbebackwhenyou're
done.
BombBlastSuitThisonestillkindofconfusesme,andthe
transmissionintheareathatyouneedtousethis

seemstoindicatethatthebadguysnowcontrolthe
windaswellasahuge,sprawlingcomplexanda
walkingnucleartank.Thewindsontheroofofthe
firstbuildingwillconstantlyblowyoubackwards,
preventingexplorationofthearea.Putonthishandy
dandysuit,andtheywon'tbotheryouanymore.
CardboardIt'sacardboardboxtohidein.Allowsyoutosneak
pastenemiesinsomecircumstances.Notavitalitem,
orparticularlyuseful,butinterestingifyouare
tryingtocollectalltheitemsinthegame.
Cards18Keycardsthatwillallowyoutoaccesscertianparts
ofthebase.Certaincardswillonlyworkoncertain
doors,soyouneedtocollectthemall.Thinkofthem
asPokemon.
CigarettesAseeminglynonsensicalitem,youbeginyourmission
withthispackofsmokes.Usingtheseafteryoutake
outtheSuperComputerwilladd1000extrasecondsto
thebase'sselfdestructtimerandwillmakeyoulook
coollikeJoeCamelortheMarlboroCowboys(just
kidding).
CompassInthedesertandinareasofthejungleaswell,you
willfindyourselfwalkingthroughthesamescreens
overandoverandoveragain.Howdoyougetoutof
thispredicament?Well,whipoutyourtrustycompass.
Thisitemnegatestherepeatingareas.
DetectorYou'renottheonlyonewithmines.Theenemyhas
plantedtheirownexplosivesinseveralareasof
OuterHeaven.Thisgizmoallowsyoutoseethem.Once
theminesarevisible,it'saneasymattertoeither
avoidorshootthem.
GasMaskAreasofOuterHeavenarefilledwithpoisonousgas
(whyarenegademercunitwouldfeeltheneedto
floodpartsoftheirownfacilitieswithSerin,I
don'tknow).Enteroneandyourhealthwillslowly
starttodrainaway.Donthegasmasktostopthis.
And,alaMarthaStewart,that'sagoodthing.
GogglesInfraredgoggles.Therearevariousareasinthebases
thatareprotectedbyinvisablesecuritybeams.This
spiffyeyewearmakesthebeamsvisibleagain,and
henceavoidable.
IronGloveThisitemisanironglove,oddlyenough.Younever
actuallyhavetoequipthisitem,anddoingsodoesn't
addanypowertoyourpuncheswhereenemiesare
concerned.Youdoneedtohavethisiteminyour
inventorywhensearchingforhiddendoorways(punching
awallwithahiddendoormakesastrange,higher
pitchedthunkthanusual;withouttheglove,all
you'llgetistheusualnoiseSnakemakeswhenhitting
somethingsolid).
LightThere'sanarea,affectionatlyknownasthe"Pitfall
Zone",thatistypicallycompletlyblackedout.Trying
tocrossthischarmingareaundertheseconditionsis
suicide.Andthat'swheretheflashlightcomesin.
Thiswillallowyoutoseewhatyou'redoinginthe
PitfallZoneand,hopefully,letyoudodgethe
pitfalls.
OxygenNotthenetworkforwomen.Partofthesecondbuilding
seemstobeeitherasmalldockingareaforboatsor
anabovegroundsewer.Inanycase,thedarkareasof
thissludgelakearedeepwater,andifyouwalkinto
these,youwillstarttosuffocate.Withtheoxygen
tankinyourinventory,youcanfreelytraversethese
nastyareaswithoutriskofdying.
P.O.W.sScatteredaroundthecellsinthebuildingsare
prisonerstakenbytheenemy.Somearefromyourteam,
andsomearefromthelocalresistancefighterswho
don'tlikeOuterHeavenanditsinhabitantsanymore
thanyoudo.Freeingprisonerswillincreaseyourrank
aswellasnetyouvaluableinformationconcerning
yourmission.
RationsLovelylittletinsoffoodthatfullyrestoreyour

lifebarwhenused,allowingyoutofighton.Youcan
onlycarryalimitednumberofthese,sousethem
spareingly.Youget1rationperpickup.
SilencerThisoneshowsupontheweaponscreen,butit's
reallymoreofanitem,sinceyoucan'tuseitin
itselftoattackthings(unlessthere'saspecialmode
whereyoucanbeatpeopleintheheadwithitthatI'm
notawareof).Whatitdoes,asthenameimplies,is
silencethesoundofyourgun,allowingyoutoshoot
guardswithoutalarmingotherguardsinthesamearea.
TransmitterAtsomepointinthegame,theenemymanagestoplant
thisbuginyourequipment.Aslongasyouare
carryingit,stealthgoesrightoutthewindow;
enemieswillknowyou'retherethesecondyouwalk
ontoanyscreenwithguards.
UniformThisisanenemysoldier'suniform.Itactslikeakey
cardtothesecondbuilding;youcan'tgetinwithout
it.Italsomakesforabetterdisguisewhensneaking
aroundthanthecardboardboxdoes.

3)ENEMIESANDHAZARDS
REGULARENEMIES
GuardsObviouslythemostcommonenemyyou'regoingtoruninto,
Guardsweartwodifferentkindsofuniformsbuttheyboth
behaveexactlythesamesowhocares.Theyallpackguns,
thoughhowoftentheyshootatyouandhowaccuratetheyare
seemstodependonhowfarintothegameyou'veprogressed.
Guardswilldropafterthreepunchesoronehitfromany
otherweapon.
GuardDogsTrainedGermanShepardpuppiesthatwouldlikenothing
betterthantotearyourgutsout.Dogsarelessdangerous
thanguards;moreofthemwon'tcomerunningfromoffscreen
whenthealarmissoundedand,ofcourse,theyaren't
packingfirearms.Intheveryearlystagesofthegame,dogs
canbedangerous,butonceyoufindthepistolthethreatof
doggydeathbecomesalmostnonexistant.
ScorpionsTheselittlebastardsarequickandtheymoveinanerratic
circularpattern,makingthemtrickytohit.Scorpionsdon't
hurtyouallthatmuchbythemselves,buttheywillpoison
youiftheyhit.Ifyoudon'tyetposesstheantidote,this
canbeverybadindeed.Thankfully,scorpionsonlyinhabit
thedesertarea,andyouwon'tbethereforverylong.
BOSSES
ArnoldTheseguyswon'tshootatyou.Instead,they'llrun
intoyouwhentheyseeyou.TheArnoldsaretough
jerkstoo;youcan'thurtthemwithanythingbutthe
rocketlauncher.
BullTankThisbossisoneofthefirstthingsyouwill
encounteruponenteringBuilding2.Itmovesslowly
andhasnoweaponrytospeakof,butonetouchis
instantdeath,andthere'snoroomtomaneuveraround
itinthecorridoryouwillfaceitin.
CowardDuckThisguythrowsboomeranglikeprojectilesatyoufrom
acrosstheroom.Theboomerangsdon'thurtthat
horribly.Theproblemyouneedtogetaroundhereis
Duck'sgothimselfsurroundedbyP.O.W.sthathe's
usingasshields.Gettingoutofthisfightwithout
offingahostagecanbetricky.
FiretrooperThisdudehasaflamethrower,asthenameimplies.The
walloffirethatthetrooperspewsoutwilldestroy
anybullets,rockets,orgrenadesyousendhisway.
Also,it'snotagoodideaforSnaketotouchthe
flameseither.
MachineGunKidAnotherarmedpunk,thisonehasamachinegunthat
willtearyoutoribbons...ifyouarestupidenoughto
letthathappen.

ShotgunnerThefirstbossyouwillmeet.He'sarmedwitha
shotgun(imaginethat)andhe'snotafraidtouseit.
Dealsoutdecentdamageandmovesfairlyquickly.
SuperComputerThisisthecomputerthatcontrolsMetalGear(http://www.neoseeker.com/metalgear/).By
itself,itcan'tharmyou.Itisprotected,however,
byanelaboratesecuritysystem.Andohyeah,guards
too.DestroyingthisrendersMetalGear(http://www.neoseeker.com/metalgear/)useless,but
italsoarmsOuterHeaven'sselfdestructdevice.
TankAlarge,armoredtankthatguardsthepathwaybetween
Buildings1and2.Ithastwomachinegunsthatfire
inanarcfromeithersideanditsmainturretfiresa
very,VERYdamagingshellthatyoushouldavoidatall
costs.
TwinShotThispairofheavygunnersguardstheprisoncellson
theroofofBuilding1.Theirgunswillputthehurt
onyousomtethingfierce,andbecauseoftheir
positioningtheyhavetheabilitytocovermostofthe
roof.

TheLeaderofOuterHeavenIdon'twishtospoilthisrightnow,in
caseyou'veneverheardofthisseries
beforeorareunawareofMetalGear(http://www.neoseeker.com/metalgear/)'s
"suprise"finalconfrontation(inother
words,incaseyou'vebeenlivingundera
rockforthelast20years).Sufficeitto
say,themysteriousleaderofOuterHeaven
isarmedwithonlyapistol,buthe's
quickandtough.Andbythetimeyoumeet
him,he'llberatherangrywithyou.
HAZARDS
CamerasSecuritycamerasthatwillbringhordesofsoldiers
downaroundyourearsiftheyseeyou.Thebestway
toavoiddetectionbythesedevicesistohugthe
wallsdirectlyunderwherethey'reguarding;they
can'tseeyouwhenyou'reinthisposition.Much
later,youwillencountercamerasthatfirelasers.
Thesebeamsofenergyaredeadlywhentheyhityou
inrapidsucession,butthelasercamerascanbe
fooledinthesamemannerthatregularonescan.
ElectrifiedFloorsIfyourunintoanareawherethefloorisglowing,
don'tsteponit.Thatunhealthyradiancemeans
thattheflooriselectrifiedandwillhurtyouto
thetouch.USUALLY(notetheemphasis)therewill
beasmall,purplecontrolpanelsomewherenearby.
TakeitoutwithRCmissilestoshutthefloordown.
MinesThereareafewareasofthegamethataremined,
andsteppingonamineisnotgoodforyourhealth.
Likethesecuritybeams,youcan'tseetheseunder
normalcircumstances.Alsolikethesecuritybeams,
thereisadeviceyoucanusetorevealthem,in
thiscasethedetector.Onceyoucanseethemines,
youcaneitherwalkaroundthemorshootthem.
PitfallsThesearetrapsthatopenupasyougetcloserto
them.Onetouchisinstantdeathagain,soavoidat
allcosts.
PoisonGasCertainareasofOuterHeavenarefloodedwith
toxicfumes.Youwillbeabletorecognizeareas
likethisbythewhite,puffycloudsthatseemto
seapupfromthefloor.Donthatgasmaskquickly
whenyouenteranarealikethattoavoidmajor
damage.
RollersTheseresembleoildrumsstackedendtoendand
rollbackandforth,blockingyourpath.It'sdeath
tothetouch,andtheonlythingyoucandois
avoidthem.Sometimestherearenitchesinthe
wallsoftheareawhereyoucanduckastherollers
goby,butdon'tcountonit.

SecurityBeamsBlunderingthroughthesewillsetoffthealarmand
calltheguardsout,allabeingseenbyacamera.
Tomakemattersworse,they'reinvisible.Puton
thosegogglesifyou'dliketoavoidthese.

4)ONEORTWOOTHERTHINGSYOUMIGHTLIKETOKNOW
ANEXPLAINATIONOFTHERANKINGSYSTEM
There'snoscorekeepinginthisgameperse.Rather,youwillbe
promotedtoahigherrankdependingonhowmanyhostagesyou'verescued.
Whyisthisagoodthing?Higherrankincreasestheamountofammunition
andrationsyoucancarry,thesizeofyourlifebar,andoneofyour

alsogodowninrankbyaccidentally(oronpurposly,ifyou'refeeling
eeeeevil)shootingandkillingfreedhostages.Youstartoutattherank

needtomakeoutgoingcallsyourself.Asageneralruleifyourescuea
hostageandtheytellyoutocontactsomeone,dosoimmediatlyupon
leavinghiscell.
THEFABLED"TRANSCIEVERTRICK"
ItwasrecentlybroughttomyattentionthatI'vementionedthe
transcievertrickseveraltimesthroughoutthisdocumentwithoutever
botheringtoexplainwhatexactlythatis.Allowmetorectifythisnow;
it'salittletrickthatwillhelpyoupasspitfalltrapsmuch,muchmore
easily.Here'showitworks.
Upontriggeringapitfall,immediatlygototheradioscreen,thengo
backintothenormalgame.Whatthisdoesisfreezethetrapsoitcan't

PART1:JUNGLEBOOGIE
MetalGear(http://www.neoseeker.com/metalgear/)beginswithabriefcutsceneshowingyou,andthreeofyour
buddies,parachutingintothejungle.Uponlanding,you'llrecievea
callfromBigBoss,yourunit'sheadhoncho.He'llexplainthemission
objectivesinmoreorlessunderstandableEnglish.Oncehe'sdone
babbling,followthetrailtoyourright.
Here,wewilldelighttoanexampleofthisgame'shorridtranslation
base.Theguardbythejeepwillfallasleepafterafewmomentsifyou
simplydon'tmove(waitforthecue,"I'mgettingsleepy!!").Whenhe's
peacfullyinslumberland,eithersneakbyhimorrunupandpunchhis
lightsoutpermenantly,thenheadsouth.
Thenextareaisoccupiedbythreemutts,andit'sprettymuch
impossibletogetbywithoutalertingthem.Theyaren'ttoohardto
dodge,sorunbyandtakethepathontherighttocontinuefurter
south.
Passanotherscreenwithadog,andyou'llcometoasmallclearingwith
atruck.Fromthispointon,thingsaregoingtogetverysticky.The
guardsyouencounterwillareallverytriggerhappyandyourlowrank
(andhence,lowamountofenergy)doesn'tpermityoutosoakupmuch
damagebeforedying.Thismakestheopeningofthisgameprobablyoneof
thetoughestpartstogetpast.Enoughdisclaimers,backtothegame.
Watchtheguardpatrollingtheclearing.Whenhisbackistoyou,charge
upbehindhimandquicklydeckhimuntilhe'sdead.Thetruckhereabouts
hasthebinocularsinit.Nowyouhaveachoicetomake.Thebinocs
aren'tanessentialitem,thoughifthisisyourfirsttimeplayingthis
gametheabilitytoseewhatliesaheadisanicethingtohave.Still,
youwillhavetofightthesameguardagainifyouopttograbthe
binocs,andhe'llseeyouimmediatlywhenyouexitthetruck.Whatever
youdecide,afteryou'redonecontinuesouth.
Afteranothercoupleofscreensofstealthykills,you'llcometoa
large,concretestructurewithasoldierstationedoneithersideofit.
Taketherightside.Beatthetaroutofthetrooperthereandscoot
southwardagain.Ifheseesyoubeforehedies,don'tworry.Simply
hurryoffthescreenbeforetheotherguardcantrytokillyou.
Now,sinceyoufollowedmyinstructionsandcamedownontherightside,
youshouldbeinspittingdistanceofoneofthetwoguardsonthisnext
screen.Takehimoutfast;eveniftheotherjerkdoesseeyou,you'll

Theresnotmuchinthemusicdpartment,sominuspointsforthat.However
thefiveorsotracksinthisgameareallverymemorableandwillstick
withanyonewhosplayedthisgamelongenoughtoappreciateit.
Onthecontrolside,Snakeusuallygoeswhereyouwanthimtobuthedoes
soratherslowly.Thiscanbeabotherwhenyouretryingtogetoutofa
roomfullofangryguards.Also,therestheirritatingtendencytotake
cornerstootightly,andtheresultisgettingstuckonawallwhenyou
thinkyoushouldhaveclearedit.Thiscanbebadintheabovementioned
situationaswell.Sometimesyouwontbequitelinedupcorrectly,and
yourpunchorgunshotwillmiss.Butforthemostpart,youshouldnthave
problems.
Withouttheaidofsomekindofwalkthrough,thisishandsdownoneofthe
hardestNESgamesoutthere.Evenwithastrategyguide,itsverylikely
thatyoulldieseveraltimesbeforecompletingthegame.Theopeningarea
isprobablythemostfrustratingpartofthegame,asyouhavetosneak
aroundunarmedforwhatseemslikeaneternity.Also,thereareafew
areaswhereyoumaybestumped,andthesolutiontoyourcurrentsetof
roadblocksisntobviousorevenremotelyhintedat(thecompassisagood
exampleofthis).Bythetimeyougettotheseareas,however,thegame
willalreadyeitherhaveitshooksintoyouandmakeyourabidwitha
desiretofigureoutthepuzzle,oryouwillhavelostinterestandgiven
uponitentirely.
Intheplotdepartment,itsthestartingpointtooneofthegreatestgame
