Demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply the rights and checks

of medication administration to reduce risk of medication error and
ensure client safety.
U-2-5
During this course, I have been educated about how critical it is to
have extensive knowledge of medication administration. This includes
application of the Rights of Medication and the establishment of the
three checks. Emphasis on failing to do so may result to adverse
reactions, or in worst case scenario, even death. That is why mastery of
these skills is a major responsibility that must be prioritized and be
taken seriously.
In this course, I have learned the six rights to medication
administration and the three checks that must be done to ensure safety.
The practice times I get during lab gives me the chance to perform
these skills and improve them. By doing so, not only do I become
better, it also gives me an introduction of how it is in a real clinical
setting. This learning is so meaningful to me because as a nurse and as
a person nothing is more important than the life and safety of the
patients under my care. Just like what the Golden Rule states, Do unto
others as you would have them do unto you. I will value the safety of
the patient just like how I wanted other people to value mine.
Based on how I perform during labs, I can rate my competency level
between fair and good. Yes, I do have an understanding of the theory
and the rationale behind it. Yes, I can apply them too during practice
sessions. However, despite the fact that I strive for perfection, I still do
miss information. To add on to that, I seldom forget very important
steps of either the rights and checks of medication administration.
To achieve excellency, I have to keep practicing. After all, one never
stops learning in nursing.
As mentioned above the only way to become good at what I am doing
is to continue practicing these skills. I will not only do this during lab
times but also at home. To further improve my competency, I will be
reading books and other resources. In addition, mastering the rights
and checks means that I also have to trust myself. I believe that I will
never be a better nurse now and more so in the future if I doubt my
ability. Believing that I can execute these skills means that I can deliver
safe and competent care.
