Loa is the largest subaerial volcano in both mass and volume, and has historically been considered
the largest volcano on Earth. It is an active shield volcano, with a volume estimated at approximately
18,000 cubic miles (75,000 km3),[3] although its peak is about 120 feet (37 m) lower than that of its
neighbor, Mauna Kea. TheHawaiian name "Mauna Loa" means "Long Mountain". Mauna Loa's most
recent eruption occurred from March 24 to April 15, 1984. No recent eruptions of the volcano have
caused fatalities, but eruptions in 1926 and 1950 destroyed villages, and the city of Hilo is partly built
on lava flows from the late 19th century.

Name of Volcano: Mount Merapi

Location: Central Java, Indonesia, 7.5408 S, 110.4448 E
Description: Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi (literally Fire
Mountain in Indonesian/Javanese), is an active stratovolcano located on the border
between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in
Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. The mountain was still erupting on
30 November 2010, however due to lowered eruptive activity on 3 December 2010
the official alert status was reduced to level 3. The volcano is now 2930 metres
high, 38 metres lower than before the 2010 eruptions. After a large eruption in 2010
the characteristic of Mount Merapi was changed. On November 18, 2013 Mount
Merapi burst smoke up to 2,000 meters high, one of its first major phreatic
eruptions after the 2010 eruption. Researchers said that this eruption occurred due
to combined effect of hot volcanic gases and abundant rainfall.

Name of Volcano: Mount Nyiragongo

Location: Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1.5167 S, 29.2500 E

volcanoes, spanning across Thera, Thirasia, Aspronisi, Palea, and Nea Kameni.
Santorini has erupted many times, with varying degrees of explosivity. There have
been at least twelve large explosive eruptions, of which at least four were calderaforming. The most famous eruption is the Minoan eruption. Eruptive products range
frombasalt all the way to rhyolite, and the rhyolitic products are associated with the
most explosive eruptions.

Name of Volcano: Taal Volcano

Location: Luzon, Philippines, 14.0019 N, 120.9928 E
Description: Taal Volcano is a complex volcano located on the island of Luzon in
the Philippines.[1] It is the second most active volcano in the Philippines with 33
historical eruptions. All of these eruptions are concentrated on Volcano Island, an
island near the middle ofTaal Lake. The lake partially fills Taal Caldera, which was
formed by prehistoric eruptions between 140,000 and 5,380 BP. The volcano had
several violent eruptions in the past causing loss of life in the island and the
populated areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at around 5,000
to 6,000. Because of its proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the
volcano was designated a Decade Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent
future natural disasters.

Name of Volcano: Teide

islands of the Atlantic. At 7,500 m (24,600 ft) from its base on the ocean floor, it is
the highest volcano on a volcanic ocean island in the world after Mauna Kea, Mauna
Loa and others in Hawaii. It remains active: its most recent eruption occurred in
1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern Santiago rift. The United
Nations Committee for Disaster Mitigation designated Teide a Decade
Volcano because of its history of destructive eruptions and its proximity to several
large towns, of which the closest are Garachico, Icod de los Vinos and Puerto de la
Cruz. Teide, Pico Viejoand Montaa Blanca form the Central Volcanic Complex of
Tenerife.

since the 18th century. Several thousand people live near the volcano.

Name of Volcano: Mount Unzen

Location: Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, 32.7567 N, 130.2944 E
Description: Mount Unzen is an active volcanic group of several
overlapping stratovolcanoes, near the city ofShimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, on the
island of Kysh, Japan's southernmost main island. In 1792, the collapse of one of
its several lava domes triggered a megatsunami that killed about 15,000 people in
Japan's worst-ever volcanic-related disaster. The volcano was most recently active
from 1990 to 1995, and a large eruption in 1991 generated a pyroclastic flow that
killed 43 people, including three volcanologists. Currently its highest peaks
are Fugen-dake at 1,359 metres (4,459 ft) and Heisei-shinzan at 1,486 metres

(4,875 ft). The latter emerged during the eruptions of the early, eponymous Heisei
era (1989).

Name of Volcano: Vesuvius

Location: Naples, Italy, 40.8167 N, 14.4333 E
Description: Mount Vesuvius (Italian: Monte Vesuvio, Latin: Mons Vesuvius) is
a stratovolcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy, about 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Naples and a
short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes which form
the Campanian volcanic arc. Vesuvius consists of a large cone partially encircled by
the steep rim of a summit caldera caused by the collapse of an earlier and originally
much higher structure. Vesuvius has erupted many times since and is the
only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred
years. Today, it is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world
because of the population of 3,000,000 people living nearby and its tendency
towards explosive (Plinian) eruptions. It is the most densely populated volcanic
region in the world.
