COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this course, we will focus on the biological, psychological, and social changes that occur as
individuals move across the lifespan, from conception to death.
This section of HDFS 105 is an asynchronous, online course that requires students to work on
their own and carefully manage their time to go through the course material. It is somewhat
self-paced in that THERE ARE DEADLINES FOR COMPLETING COURSE MATERIALS, but students
are free to finish modules ahead of schedule. You should plan on spending about the same
amount of time that you would for a regular course for a 3 credit, 15-week course, this should
be 6-9 hours/week. There are no formal lectures so you should think of the time reading the
text as your lecture time.
This course works well for students who are:
-willing to take responsibility for their own
learning
-well-organized and can plan ahead and keep
track of due dates on their own

You should NOT take this course if you:

-would rather be taught than learn on your
own
-need reminders from the instructor of
assignments and due dates

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will acquire an understanding of theory and research in human development in a way
that will help them:
1. understand how the scientific method is applied to the study of human growth and
development,
2. learn how to critically evaluate conclusions or claims against research-based evidence,
3. & address myths, misconceptions, and common knowledge about human
development.
REQUIRED TEXT & WEB REGISTRATION
You have several options for using a textbook and gaining access to the MH Connect site.
Option 1: Purchase a NEW physical textbook with Online Access Code (Connect Plus)
Santrock, J. W. Life-Span Development (15th edition) with Connect Plus Lifespan Access Card.
McGraw-Hill.
Students can purchase a new textbook for HDFS 105 that includes the required Connect PLUS
access code. This will also give you access to an Ebook version of the text. You could purchase
the textbook from another source, but make sure it is the 15th edition, and that it comes with
the Connect Access Card. Do NOT get the book A Topical Approach to Life-Span Development
by the same author.
Option 2: Purchase an Ebook with Online Access Code (Connect Plus)
If you do not want a physical textbook, you can get this option at the Illini Union Bookstore OR
directly on the McGraw-Hill Connect site. This option gives you access to an Ebook version of
the text, but you should note that: (a) the book is only available by logging into the Connect site
and cannot be downloaded or accessed when you are offline, and (b) you are only getting
temporary access to the Ebook like renting versus owning the book.
Option 3: Purchase a USED book and purchase Online Access separately (Connect Standard)
If you plan on hunting down a used book:
Be sure you get the 15th Edition. There have been significant changes from older editions,
and you will be responsible for content in the 15th Edition.
You must also separately purchase access to MH Connect. The most inexpensive option is to
purchase the Connect Standard option directly on the MH Connect site. This gives you access to
the site, but does not include an Ebook. If you want an Ebook, you could purchase the Connect
Plus option as described in Option 2 above. You CANNOT use an old code that might have come
with a used book (it just will not work)!
No matter which option you chose
You should register on the MH Connect as soon as possible so you can complete the first set of
assignments and quizzes that are due. Detailed instructions on how to register will be on
Compass. If you are not sure you want to stay in the class, you can get a trial registration at MH
Connect and then upgrade to a full paid account when you are sure. This option is called

Courtesy Access. Connects Courtesy Access program allows you to register in Connect before
you purchase an access code. This program offers full access to our course (for 14 days this
trial applies to our entire course not individual subscriptions, so it begins on 1/20/16 and ends
by 2/2/16) before you must purchase an access code. This option is helpful for those awaiting
financial aid or a textbook in the bookstore, those who may drop the class and those who want
to try the Connect Plus eBook before they buy.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS & GRADING
The course is divided into 10 sections (corresponding to the textbook sections) that consist of
one to three chapters. Each section has a deadline (schedule below), but you can move ahead
as fast as you would like. Deadlines are 5:00 PM on Thursday afternoons. Note that all work
must be COMPLETED (not just started) before the 5 PM deadline. All assigned work will be
automatically submitted at 5 PM, whether it has been completed or not. Your final grade will be
based upon the accumulation of 600 total points (summarized in the table below). You will be
able to access all requirements via Illinois Compass2g. No late work will be accepted.
1. Syllabus Quiz (Compass 2g) 0 pts, but must score 95% to proceed with the course.
All students MUST pass a quiz about the contents of the syllabus before they can go on
to other requirements in the class. The quiz will cover course requirements, how the
course works, and the expectations for the course. You must have a score of 95% before
you are allowed to proceed in the course, but you can retake the quiz as many times as
needed.
2. 10 Section Reviews (Compass 2g) - 10 pts/section = 100 points
Each section includes a review activity that consists of web links that require you to
listen, view, read, or explore issues related to that section. You must then post a
response to some questions on Compass2g. We recommend that you do this AFTER
reading the text for that unit. The purpose of these activities is to reinforce concepts
from the text and to challenge you to think critically and move beyond the text to apply
principles and concepts to real-life issues. Your responses will be automatically
submitted on the deadlines (Thursdays at 5:00 PM). Note that this must be COMPLETED
(not just started) before the 5:00 PM deadline. No section reviews will be accepted
late.
3. 20 LearnSmart Activities (MHConnect) 5pt/chapter=100 pts
LearnSmart is a set of interactive activities designed to help analyze gaps and strengths
in your knowledge and prepare you for the quizzes (more information is provided on the
Compass2g and Connect student support site). We recommend that you complete the
LearnSmart activities after you read the text and before you take the quizzes. Your
progress will be automatically submitted on the deadlines (Thursdays at 5:00 PM). Note
that this must be COMPLETED (not just started) by the 5:00 PM deadline. You will be
able to get the full 5 points in about 15-20 minutes, but the longer you spend on it, the
better prepared you will be for the quizzes. You will also have a SmartBook feature that
3

HDFS 105 Online Syllabus

Spring 2016

will highlight the parts of the text that you should review before taking the exam. No
LearnSmart Activities will be accepted late.
4. 8 Quizzes (MHConnect) - 25 questions; 25 possible points/quiz = 200 points
All quizzes will be open-book, multiple-choice, 1 point per question. For each quiz,
questions are selected randomly from a larger pool of questions so each person will
have a slightly different exam. Each quiz can only be taken once, and once you begin a
quiz, you must complete it in one session (you cannot log off then log back on again).
Quizzes are automatically submitted on the deadlines (Thursdays at 5:00 PM), and after
you reach the time limit for the quiz (45 minutes). Note that quizzes must be
COMPLETED (not just started) before the 5 PM deadline. Therefore, you need to make
sure you start your quiz for that week no later than 4:15 to allow yourself the full time.
You will have a quiz every week with the exception of weeks 6, 11 and 15; on those
weeks you will have a paper due instead. You will not have more than one quiz each
week. However, remember that most sections cover multiple chapters. See the course
schedule below for a complete list of the sections covered each week, the chapters in
each section, and the weekly requirements (learn smarts, reviews, papers, and quizzes
due).
Although the quizzes are open book, you will not have enough time to look up each
question; you should read each chapter and be familiar with the material. If you feel
that a question has not been graded correctly, you may contact the instructor and (a)
identify which quiz and question was incorrectly graded, (b) the answer that you gave,
and (c) the information in the text that supports your answer. Taking a screen capture is
most helpful. No Quizzes will be accepted late.
5. Paper Assignments (200 possible points)
A more detailed description of each paper assignment will be posted on Compass2g.
Here are the deadlines (all due at 5pm on Thursdays)
Thursday, February 25th, 2016: Assignment #1 Due (50 points)
Thursday, March 31st, 2016 Assignment #2 Due (50 points)
Thursday, April 28th, 2016: Assignment #3 Due (100 points)
**There will be one extra credit opportunity (5 possible points) available for the class. Please
do not ask the instructors if there is anything you can do to improve your grade or earn extra
points beyond the work described in this syllabus.

your classmates personal stories and opinions. Whatever information is shared in this class, is
to be used only in class and others thoughts, opinions, and stories should not be shared with
anyone outside of the class or on social media. Please also be aware that other students will
read your blog posts, so only post information you are comfortable sharing. When commenting
on others work, it is encouraged to challenge each other and engage in meaningful
conversation so that we can learn. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and
derogatory or offensive language, or put downs will not be tolerated. This class is a safe space
for all students and instructors and any violations of this policy will be taken seriously.
Deadlines and Extensions
There will be no extensions without prior consent of the instructor (at least 1 week before the

of academic integrity (including having someone other than the student registered for the
course completing homework assignments or exams for the registered student) will result in
steps outlined in the Student Code.
Accommodation of Students with Special Needs
Students who require any accommodation in this course should contact the professor early in
the semester to make the necessary arrangements. To receive accommodation services,
students must be registered with the Division of Rehabilitation-Education Services (DRES).
Contacting the Instructors
The best way to contact us is via e-mail we will try to get back to you within 24 hours (except
on weekends). We are happy to meet with students in person or online during our office hours
or by appointment. Before asking minor questions, please do the following: (a) read the
syllabus, and (b) check the Compass2g site (especially Announcements, the Helpful Hints folder,
and the Discussion Board). If you use the Discussion Board to ask questions, other students may
benefit from the answer to your question.
Technical Requirements for the Course
For best results, students are encouraged to use Firefox or Chrome browsers (on both Windows
and Mac platforms) to use Compass2g. There have been some issues in the past with Safari
browsers on Macs.
There is a Blackboard Mobile Learn app (for iOS, Android, BlackBerry and webOS devices) that is
free for U of I students that can be used to read course information, use blog and journal
functions, and check grades. However, the mobile app cannot be used to take exams.
How to register on McGraw-Hill Connect through Compass2g (also known as Blackboard)
Before you register, you will need your access code (if you bought the textbook with the access
code, or just the Connect Plus access code at the Bookstore) or be ready with a credit card to
purchase access.
1. Sign into Compass2g
2. Go to: Spring 2016-HDFS 105-Intro to Human Development-Section C
3. Scroll down to How to Register on McGraw-Hill Connect through Compass2g, and follow
the on-screen instructions to register. Click on the link for the attached PDF for very detailed
instructions.
Taking the Online Quizzes
We strongly recommend using a laptop or desktop computer - do not try to take exams on a
phone or other mobile device.
Use a wired connection if possible, or a reliable wireless connection in your home, dorm, or
apartment. We recommend that you NOT use a public wireless connection (like a coffee shop).

Spring 2016

If you have technical difficulties while taking a Quiz or completing the LearnSmart activities
while in MH Connect (e.g., system stops responding), dont panic just do the following steps in
this order:
1. Take a screen capture of your screen, if possible, note what you were trying to do, the date
and time, and any error message that may have appeared
2. Contact McGraw-Hill support and tell them what happened. You may need to provide them
with information about (a) the course you are taking, (b) what you were trying to do when you
ran into trouble, and (c) what the issue is. They will likely give you a case number.
3. Email your instructor with an explanation of what happened, the date and time, and what
McGraw Hill support told you and the case number they gave you. Attach the screen capture if
you were able to get one.
If you feel there was an error in grading the exam, you should email the Instructor or TA and:
Identify the quiz# and question that was incorrectly graded (include a screen capture if you
like),
Provide a citation from the text (quote and page number) that supports your answer.
