since school days. My father has always tried to cultivate a habit of curiosity in my mind. The
desire to learn how things are made and how they work moved me in the direction of taking
up engineering. With the will to augment my knowledge and skills, I present my application
for Masters course in Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Having achieved an all India rank within top 1% in All India Engineering Entrance Exam
(A.I.E.E.E), I opted for Production engineering course at P.E.C. University Of Technology,
Chandigarh, India. P.E.C. is one of the top ranking universities in field of engineering in
India and was established in year 1921. During my undergraduate course, I developed a
strong conceptual understanding of mechanical, manufacturing and industrial engineering
subjects like Thermodynamics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid mechanics, Mechanics of Machines,
Design of machine elements, Manufacturing Processes, Computer Integrated Design &
Manufacturing, Tool Design, Production & Operations Management etc. I have also done
introductory course in specialised areas like Finite Element Analysis, Quality Control and
Operations Research.
I found lot of interest in subjects which taught product designing keeping in view the
functional requirements and specification of the products and thereafter finding the best way
to manufacture them while ensuring they will operate without failure. I believe that I have a
strong base to understand advanced courses in this field.
Always eager to use my theoretical learning in practical applications, I was part of many
projects during under-graduation period. Some of the major departmental projects taken up
by me were on topics; Design (Designing a prototype of Sterling Engine), Welding
(Workshop course), Machining (Machining Workshop project on Tool Manufacturing),
Engineering Metrology, Electric Discharge Machining (Review on latest developments in
E.D.M.) and Ergonomics (Project on Washington State Ergonomics Rules). These projects
not only strengthened my knowledge of these subject areas, but also improved my research
skills. I learned the methodical and practical approach, required to carry out any project.
In my final year of under-graduation, I designed and developed a prototype of low cost and
efficient cooling unit which achieved a temperature of around 25 degree centigrade in a
medium size chamber which was handy and could be used for storing items like medicines.
The prototype was made by using Peltier heat pump to provide cooling effect using electricity
and a phase change material (Calcium chloride mixture having melting point around 24
degree centigrade) along with thermal insulators, to maintain the temperature of the chamber
for longer time in case of unavailability of electrical power such as during transportation.
To gather some industry experience, I did internship in manufacturing department of
Mahindra Swaraj (Tractor manufacturing plant). Here I got a good opportunity to study the
various manufacturing processes and technologies employed in plant. I did a close study of
various steps in automobile designing, manufacturing and testing processes. I also carried out
industrial project on assembly line balancing of trumpet and axle sub-assembly.
