INDUSTRY PROFILE
9

Telecom infrastructure in India has brought Indian telecom industry in an

enviable position, as it is second amongst the emerging nations of Asia. Indian
telecom sector ranks as the fifth largest world over.
The Indian telecom history begins in 1851 when the British India capital Calcutta
(now Kolkata) witnessed its first operational landlines. However the telephone
services came thirty years later in 1881. In the modern telecom scenario, the
major change was the advent of private telecom business companies. In 1997, the
formulation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to facilitate the
Indian telecom business plan expansion led to increased share of private telecom
companies in the telecom market size of India. In 1999, the new national telecom
policy came with cellular telecom services.

The following topics define the Indian telecom industry

GOVERNMENT ACTS FOR REGULATION OF TELECOM INDUSTRY
The various telecom India related acts by the Department of Telecommunications
India are:

Indian Telegraph Act 1885: This act empowered the government of India to
take control of the existing telegraph lines and lay down the necessary
infrastructure for further expansion of telecommunications in India.

Indian Telegraph (amendment) Rules 2004: This act set the guidelines for
10

the set up and development of public telecom services in India.

Indian Wireless Act 1993: According to this act wireless telecom services
could be set up only after due licensing from the telegraphy authority of
India.

Information Technology Act 2000: The act defines the information

technology based communications in India. Telecom Industry of India was
shown e-commerce way through this act in a legal manner.

made in the act as per the needs of the Indian telecom market that surfaced in the
telecom market analysis and research conducted.

TELECOM NETWORK SERVICES

The telecom network services in India are being expanded in order to meet the inhouse demands and also set new world standards. The international telecom
11

services and products by India's overseas telecom service provider Videsh Sanchar
Nigam Limited (VSNL) include:

Long Distance Transmission Network: It is based on terrestrial microwave

radio relay and co-axial cables along with optical fibre cables.

International Subscriber Dialing Network: It is a fully automated system

with services available for all countries.

TELECOM SERVICE PROVIDERS IN INDIA

The

Indian

telecom

directory

shows

two

major

divisions:

Fixed Service Providers (FSP's):

These include the basic service providers that are the state operators like MTNL
India and BSNL India who collectively account to over 90% of the total basic
telecom services and private sector telecom service providers in India who mainly
focus on leased lines, ISDN, videoconferencing and other high-end services.
Cellular Service Providers (CSP's)
The cellular services in India are also categorized as GSM (Global Mobile
Communications System) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple access) system.
The leading GSM services providers in the Indian telecom industry 2007 are
Hutchison or hutch (Now Vodafone and known as Orange in Maharashtra), Airtel,
Idea Telecom, Tata, and Reliance. These include both pre-paid and post paid
mobile phone cards and services providers. The leading CDMA providers are still
Reliance communications and Tata Indicom with Airtel and Touchtel just entering
the market.
INDIAN TELECOM MARKET NEWS
12

With the rapid increase in the telecom and IT industry in India, the major cities in
india including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore,
Hyderabad, Pune, Gurgaon, Noida have registered new records in the sale of
various telecom products and solutions. The telecom directory of India is
increasing in size day by day. The leading directories include telecom directory of
Bangalore, Karnataka, Kerala and other South India areas as that is the main
telecom business centre of India.
A new industry upcoming in the telecom sector of India is the telecom outsourcing
or business process outsourcing (BPO). The BPO industry in India is based in the
IT hubs mainly Gurgaon, Noida, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, New
Delhi,

Mumbai

and

other

cities.

The Indian telecom news shows newer telecom business plans everyday, the
telecom companies employ newer marketing techniques to lure as many
customers as possible. The telecom management India now is a separate study
form in itself that covers telecom engineering courses teaching telecom
engineering solutions, telecom market analysis about the new trends of the
market, development of telecom network infrastructure, formulating telecom
technologies and their updates by doing proper research in the field, and taking up
major telecom projects for providing telecom network solutions to all.
The latest telecom new from India is that India with a mere 2.2 telecom services
per 100 persons is a huge market for telecom business solutions. More and more
international telecom companies are diverting their telecom technologies towards
Indian Telecom sector, in order to confirm their telecom market share in India.
This has also created mass telecom jobs in India; the Indian telecommunications
13

industry provides many job opportunities especially with the BPO sector job
openings.

Technologies A-Z
In today's information technology era, we come across a never-ending array of
technological terms that very often cause confusion. Here we have provided a
glossary of such terms which we hope will prove useful to you.
Leading Solutions
Lower power consumption, higher bandwidth, richer services and more userfriendly experiences have become the future development trend of the telecom
industry. We continuously introduce on-target solutions addressing operators'
challenges in network convergence and transformation, mobile broadband,
environmental protection and exploring emerging markets.

Our View
The key aim of transformation is to preserve and develop customers, while at the
same time, exploring new fields, developing new services, and using new
services to stimulate income growth. The core of transformation is network and
service transformation, as well as corresponding management and organization
architecture. A unified service platform and a unified bearer network should be
set up to support the safe and reliable transmission of services to end users. So, to
meet the requirements for service and network transformation, convergence is the
right direction.
29

What We Can Help

Convergence of telecom networks and the Internet and transformation to a

customer-centric all-IP network has come the most effective way for operators to
maximize value. Huawei helps customers overcome the challenges in all-IP
transformation and generate new revenue streams.
Compared with competitors, Huawei possesses unique comprehensive strengths.
At present, Huawei ranks No.2 in fixed network, among the global top three in
mobile network and has the best IP technologies in traditional

telecom manufacturing field. Huawei thus takes an unequaled position in all-IP

based FMC. Huawei invests heavily in key areas including 3G/4G, multi-play
and IMS, and is leading in such areas. Huawei will be the best partner of
operators in the age of convergence, bringing customers unique
Broadband Everywhere
Overview
Providing ubiquitous broadband connections will help operators to increase
revenue and achieve business transformation.
30

Our View
Bandwidth is the basis to meet the user experience. The bandwidth demand is
increasing from the traditional Web browser to the high-definition video
networks. As a result, operators continue to upgrade the means of access, from
traditional narrowband to broadband access and optical fiber access in fixed line,
from 2G to 3G and 4G ultra-wideband in wireless. Faster access network will not
only enable consumers to better enjoy the fun of surfing the Internet, but also the
development of telemedicine, distance learning, and other information
technology.

Explosive growth of information on the transmission network brings severe

challenge to operators. Therefore, Introduction of 40G WDM 100G transmission
network has become an inevitable choice for operators. In particular, 40G, as a
leader in next generation optical networking technology, due to its maturity, is
being selected by more and more operators. 40G will eliminate the transmission
bottlenecks between the super-core Internet routers and supercomputers.
In the backbone layer, the increasing volume of traffic brings great pressure.
Operators need a more powerful "heart" to deal with the ongoing surge in traffic
demand. While the capacity can be extended by interconnecting the core routers
31

to share the flow, it will bring many new problems. Cluster is one of the most
effective solutions. It is easy to maintain and does not increase the complexity of
the network, and help operators improve the network performance and capacity
needs by lower cost.

What We Can Help

Huawei understands the customer demand that need to transform to ALL IP
broadband networks, and has launched this industry-leading comprehensive
IPTime Solution to meet their needs.

Solution Providers helping operators undergo the IP transformation of mobile

transport networks need to

have advanced technologies and experience in both mobile and broadband

networking. Huawei possesses these capabilities and has helped many customers
achieve business success.

Heavy Reading's chief analyst.
36

Challenge and Opportunity

Nowadays, Ubiquitous massive data experience requires full-service ultra
broadband. As shown in following figure, more and more people have demands
on downloading video, music and movie at home, office and on the go.

"One of the bigger challenges that operators face today is to build converged
ultra-broadband bearer networks that can give them the flexibility to quickly
deploy a full range of services and at the same time significantly reduce the TCO
(total cost of operation) of their entire networks," said Daniel Tang, vice president
of Huawei Network Product Line.

with FSAN NGA and has a data rate of 10Gbps downstream and 2.
IPTime Mobile Backhaul

38

Overview
In todays mobile broadband, bandwidth increases 50 times while the revenue
increases 10 times only. Data service consumes more bandwidth but bring less
revenue per bit in mobile broadband era.
How to reduce the backhaul cost is a big challenge for mobile operator.
"Solution Providers helping operators undergo the IP transformation of mobile
transport networks need to have advanced technologies and experience in both
mobile and broadband networking. Huawei possesses these capabilities and has
helped many customers achieve business success." - Ding Yun, President of
Huawei's Network Product Line.

ALL IP Trend for Mobile Transport

IP-based mobile transport networks first appeared in backbone bearer networks.

IP/MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) routers over the wave division
multiplexing (WDM) system efficiently bear mobile softswitch services. China

39

Mobile, BT, Vodafone, and Etisalat, have all seen greater profits and consumer
satisfaction after building IP backbone bearer networks.

Mobile base stations are gradually adopting ALL IP technology and the air
interface rate has been increasing rapidly, for example, from 144kbps in GPRS to
14.4Mbps in HSPA, and to 100Mbps in long-term evolution (LTE). As a result,
transport bandwidth required by mobile backhaul networks has been booming.

Our Solutions
At the Mobile World Congress (3GSM) Barcelona 2008, Huawei formally
released the IP Transport Infrastructure for Mobile Evolution (IPTime), an ALL
IP-based carrier-class IP transport network solution.

Access resources can be obtained by different types of base stations in mobile

backhaul. Huaweis IPTime solution offers various access modes.

40

1. Optical fiber-based mobile backhaul:

The IPTime solution provides various optical fiber access modes, including
MAN Ethernet and PON
2. Microwave-based mobile backhaul:

IPTime provides pure packet microwave and integrates with the PTN for
smooth mobile network evolution.

Microwave transport is also moving toward ALL IP as base stations

develop towards ALL IP, due to the increase of bandwidth demands.

3. Copper cable-based mobile backhaul:

Huaweis IPTime solution provides rich xDSL access modes.

Benefits
Huawei innovative IPTime mobile backhaul solution bring mutual benefits to
operators:

41

Based on ALL IP architecture, and can map everything into PWE3 to swap
legacy ATM/SDH/Ethernet/FR service to a unified transport network.

Integrating packet transport technology and SDH experience, and keeping

the legacy customers experience in packet network.

Providing specific last mile design for mobile backhaul, and reducing
operators CAPEX and OPEX.

Smooth evolution from legacy network to packet network and protect

operators investment.
Green Communications
Our View
Energy conservation and emission reduction are not just about fulfilling social
responsibilities and helping improve the environment. It also allows enterprises
to better control operating costs, thus improving their profitability and
competitiveness directly.
Media Insight--Huawei gains soft power in green telecom
42

Our Solutions
We aim to produce greener network and achieve the goal of "Green commutation,
green Huawei, Green world".

As early as 2000, as one of the first group of enterprises responding to

Environmental-Protection & Energy-Saving Plan in the world, we put forward
the concept of "Green Network" and considered it as one of the most important
innovative factors, in every working procedure from planning, design, R&D to
manufacturing, also take energy saving as one of the performance assessments of
the company.

Huawei's green strategy includes all the various elements of an end-to-end

network, from access, to core networks, using efficient transmission networks to
connect it all

together so that we can provide service providers with the latest in network
convergence; all based on world class green credentials. All of our current
products consume about 30% less energy than traditional ones.
43

In 2007, over 100 thousand Huawei green base stations were deployed; which
reduced 170 thousand tons of CO2 exhaust comparing to traditional equipments,
that's equal to the CO2 exhaust volume of 70,000 Chinese in one year.
In 2008, we joined GeSI to promote the study to alternative energy sources and
environmental protection
.
Third Party Voice
"During the period from 1973 to 2006 a period of 33 years, we increased our
usage of energy by 73% and emitted 79% CO2 exhaust into the atmosphere"
International Energy Agency 2008
"Huawei is one of a number of vendors seriously attacking the problem of
energy efficiency in telecom networks. Joining GeSI is a positive move for
Huawei given its rising importance in Europe' s telecom industry."

Energy Efficiency
Overview
At present our products consume about 30% less energy than traditional ones.
Challenge and Opportunity
The distribution of energy consumption required by networks may vary slightly
among operators, but the overall situation is basically the same. The general rule
in the industry is that the ratio of the equipment rooms of the core network to the
equipment rooms of the access

network in power consumption can be 3:7 for mobile operators and 4:6 for the fix
operators.
Our Solutions
We provide end-to-end green solutions, including Green Sites, Convergence
Core, Green Transmission, and Green Supply Chain.
Green Sites
Huawei's "PA Gain Enhancement"technology reduces the number of sites we
would need and thereby saves energy; While the "distributed architecture,
"Intelligent Power Allocation"across the system saving energy efficiently on the
device level. Even the new integrated shelter saves energy and reduces emission.
46

Green Central Office

On the core network side, Huawei's innovative ALL-IP, MSC Pool and ngHLR
architectures simplify the network and reduce the number of equipments as well
as the footprint thus greatly reducing the energy consumption.
The traditional work station is replaced by an advanced DC ATAE server. The
CPU speed is adjusted according to the traffic resulting in further savings being
realized.
Green Transmission
On the transmission side, 75% transmission efficiency can be realized from there
ASON network architecture, and a 30% energy saving can be achieved by using
the "bypass"function; The energy efficiency is achieved as a result of higher
integration levels than that which is achievable with traditional equipment.

Green Supply Chain

On the supply chain side, we strictly complies with the RoHS, and WEEE
requirements and already implements the SA 8000 standard.
47

Sustainable Energy
Overview
Solar and wind energy is the most common natural energy, is also the
inexhaustible source of clean energy. With the significant reduction of the BTS
power consumption, wind-solar power supply system has become possible.

Challenge and Opportunity

The power load of the sites in remote areas is generally small, and the
distance is far, it is no economic to transmit power by grid. A local diesel
power

generator

is

needed

to

provide

the

power.

However, diesel generators can be only as a temporary energy emergency.

In order to supply the long-term stable and reliable power, it will have to
depend on local natural resources.

48

Our Solutions
Solar and wind energy in terms of time and geographical have strongly
complementary to each other. During the day, the sunlight is strong while wind is
weak; in the evening after sunset, the light is weak, but the wind is strengthen
because of big changes in surface temperature. In the summer, sunlight is
intensity and wind is small; in the winter, the sunlight is weak and wind is strong.
Solar and wind power in time of the complementarity of each other, so the windsolar complementary generation systems are the best independent power system
in remote area.

49

We have deployed wind-solar power supply widely in China, Africa and MENA.
According to our test in Africa, wind and solar generation system can achieve
return on investment balance in 3-4 years comparing to diesel generations. After
that, no diesel oil consumption is needed. Therefore, OPEX is saved while carbon
emissions are reduced
50

Transportation Cabinet
Overview
In the transportations of communications equipment, packaging consumes a large
amount of natural resources for example timber, with continued industry use
seen as a long-term threat for forests.
Challenge and Opportunity
In order to reduce the consumption of timber, the industry's leading suppliers are
working hard to promote renewable packaging materials and improve the
recycling of these resources.

We have reduced the consumption of packaging materials by utilizing lightweight

materials and smaller packaging, continually investigating more appropriate
packaging, and extending the life cycle of the packaging products through the
establishment and improvement of an effective recovery system. These can be
summarized by using the 6 R concept, that of: rational design, reducing supplies,
recycle, reuse, recovery, and renewable.

Our Solutions

51

The "Transportation cabinet" is typically a reusable unit with associated reusable

packaging. This solution is based on recycled wood materials, visualized
packaging technology, assembly technology, standardization and appropriate
design.
Together with a universal logistics platform, the "Transportation cabinet" solution
reduces the consumption of natural resources such as wood from forests in the
packaging and logistics stage, and promotes sustainable development of
resource-saving and environmentally friendly packaging and logistics within the
industry.

Figure: Reuse of Visible Cabinet Package Saves 50% Wood Consumption

Benefits
52

By working in partnership with our customers on their network implementation

projects we have shown that, compared to the legacy packaging solution, the
"Transportation cabinet" solution can save about 50% of timber, reduce about
20% to 30% of the packaging weight, and extend up to 2 to 4 times the service
life of the Packaging, while reducing about 5% to 10% the life-cycle cost, and
raising operational efficiency about 80% to 90%.
According to Huawei shipment statistics, using this solution and our ongoing
continuous improvement program, 12,000 cubic meters of timber consumption,
2,700,000 liters of oil consumption, 750,000 KWH power, and 6,172,000 tons
carbon dioxide emissions will be saved every year.

Service Experience
53

Overview
We offer hundreds of services, covering voice, data, and operation support and
more, to help customers create bigger business opportunities.
Our View
Before investment in network transformation and innovation can create any
value, user experience must be gained through services and applications of the
innovation. Telecom value adding service (VAS) and a
high quality network operation has gradually become the major drivers of
improving customer service experience.

What we can help

In the hot digital music market, we, as the largest RBT service provider, together
with digital music distributors and intelligent service architecture providers,
forms the "digital music alliance". The alliance customizes digital music
solutions that cover "platform + service + operation" and satisfy diversified and
personalized user requirements to expand the market share in digital music.
54

Based on the existing SMS platform, we launched the "Messaging+" solution

which delivers richer experience and higher added value, enabling operators to
unlock their huge potential in the messaging market.
Facing the trend of industry convergence and telecom transformation and the
shifting of software industry focus from products to service and operation, we
offer a number of convergent service solutions including 3G, Multi-play and
IMS. We are also able to provide convergent services over multiple networks.
Huawei's convergent, standard and open system architecture and service platform
help operators realize fast service deployment.

We combined the platform strengths of IN and OSS, and launched the

"convergent billing solution". This solution intends to serve all users of the
network and promote the billing capability of new services. It helps operators
reduce their CAPEX and OPEX. It also enables flexible marketing tariff
strategies and intensive operation to help operators increase user loyalty.

Operational Network Performance

Overview
An operational network mainly refers to a metropolitan area network (MAN) or
a broadband access network, and is the extension of the carrier-class IP bearer
network and the backbone network within local (metro) area. It provides
subscribers with direct access as well as services, and serves as the carriers'
platform for full-service convergence and access.
Challenge and Opportunity
With the development of Internet services and the surging subscriber base,
operational networks need to

continue evolving and expanding. In the course of network evolution and

expansion, the carriers are bound to encounter many challenges as shown below.
Endless customer complaints about network quality: As the broadband Internet
evolves, Internet users are in an era of amazing growth. Although the carriers
make continuous efforts to expand their operational networks, they still fail to
give a satisfactory answer to the requirements for increasing bandwidth. As a
56

result, their network quality is perceived as rather poor, the committed bandwidth
rate is unavailable, and the offline events and disconnection cases often occur. All
these not only lead to a burst of customer complaints about the carriers' failure in
meeting the service level agreement (SLA) for VIP subscribers, but affect
customer satisfaction, and give rise to severe customer churn.

Non-standard data over the existing network and improper network

planning: With the increase of broadband networks on a large scale, some
redundant data is seen in the configurations of devices over the existing
networks. Many configurations go against the industry norms, which makes
routine maintenance quite inconvenient. Besides, the network construction that is
accomplished in a staged manner often easily incurs improper network planning,
or even hidden network faults. For example, single-point of failure in the network
architecture, poor network reliability and non-scalable IP address planning, or
even overlapped IP addresses occur. In addition, an improper routing plan results
in low running efficiency of the entire network; improper VLAN and QinQ
planning easily causes broadcast storms and expansion difficulties.

Inefficient utilization of network resources: The development of services

poses higher requirements on network device performance. The carriers are
persistent in expanding their network capacity, but unfortunately, the utilization
rate of network resources is still rather low. This situation is worsened by the
57

carriers' unsatisfactory utilization of their own resources. On the one hand,

service volumes continue growing and higher forwarding performance need to be
supported by devices. On the other hand, they still have much room to increase
the utilization of network resources. Despite the carriers' CAPEX that remains
high, network performance is still unable to meet the requirements of service
development.
In a word, the operational networks need an all-inclusive "health check-up"
directed at the weaknesses and hidden faults over the existing networks, for the
purpose of enhancing the KPIs of the networks and improving network over-all
end-to-end performance.

76

SUGGESTIONS

As a human being all employees may face some sort of problems in their
lives. The Superiors should always keep a close relationship with them
and try to tackle it.
Clean work station with channel music will boost them up.
The study suggests that there should be an immediate improvement in the

working atmosphere
If transportation facility is available, the employees can work extra two or
three hours fruitfully.
Appreciation, recognition can improve the motivational level of the
employees.
All rewards should be given by the HOD in front of the whole department.

77

Suggestions by the Employees

Women demand crche facility.
It is better to give increment and all other benefits timely.
Keep equality among same level employees.
Do necessary steps to improve interpersonal relationships.
Employees have great interest to participate in National Quiz competition
& other
programs
Conduct a get together at least once in a month.
Training and structured payroll needed.
Credits and promotions to be given to the right person.
Creating an association of employees thought which they can implement
several activities related employees.
Efforts of employee have to be recognized, that by itself is a motivation.

78

OTHER MOTIVATING FACTORS THAT COULD BE PRACTICED

In the reception arrange an electronic display of photos with their
achievements.
Full furnished, interior decorated office with channel Music.
Work station can be decorated with posters which have proverbs.
A library in the office premises helps in learning.
Provide pick and drop and crche facility.

79

ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS

Achievements
The involvements of the employees taught me that a work must be done
not with hands but with mind.
I could understand that we should have positive communication and keep
good interpersonal relationship.
The success of the company depends upon the dedication and the positive
attitude of the employees.

80

Contributions
If the employees are motivated to a higher level, out of 130, 78 employees can do
extra 201 hours of job.
This is equivalent to the work of 25 employees, i.e. Per day company saves 25
employees, per month 625 employees.
