(1) Treated water is parmeated cantinuously or intermittently with constant flaw (varying pressure or TMP), The standard intermittent operation is dene with permeate pump operating 9 min (ON) and suspending 1 min (OFF). As operating with peak flow, when TMP risss mors than 25ka, the intermittent operation is. changed so that permeate pump is operstad for 4 min (ON) and suspendad for 1 min (OFF). When TMP rises more than 30kPa, in-situ chemical cisaning should bs psrfarmed. = Rafer to [In-Situ Chemical Cleaning Mathod] on pg. 20. (2) Please design the systam such that firation stops while aeration is being suspanded oF diffuser cleaning takes place. (3) tis better not to aerate the MBR tank while filtration is suspended. When filtration is suspended, membrane sheet is puffed up and drew apart fram the membrane panel lf the membrane cartridge is aerated than, mambrane shest vibrates. If this situation lasts for 2 lang time, mambrans shast could hava bsen wom out and torn apart from ‘the membrane panel. Howaver, this precaution is not applied to the intermittent operation described in (1). (4) Please design the system such that it automatically shortens the aeration time while it operates at @ low loading, ar while the amount of incoming raw wastewater is not much. (Example: Law-loading made: Intermittent aeration [§-minute aeration and 25-minute suspension] can bs dane) (6) The SMU must bs fully submerged as it is parsed. The depth of submergence: should be more than 500 mm from the top of membrane module. (6) For double deck unit(s), itis not as easy to inspect the lower membrane module as upper membrane module. Thus, it is recommenced ta choose an operation mathod accordingly, such as applying lawer flux to the lower membrane module, so that the lower membrane module does not foul so fast. [2]"Clsan Water" Test Preparation Perform the following inspections and preparation before starting the “clean water” tat. (1) Re-check the air supply piping connaction and the permeats piping connection. (2) Re-check to see if all the SMU(s) is/are leveled (3) Make sure to clean the inside of MBR tank completely bafore it is fillad with “clean a (4) Hf the tast is operated in the MBF tank where sand and debris ars not complstely cleaned, mambrana can be fouled. (©) Put “clean water" such as tap water or underground water into the MBR tank up to the level specified for a normal operation. * Ai this fime, open the chemical pauring valves in order to allow the air trapped in membrane cartridgs to escans. (JXGeeBee] Glace the chemical pouring valves immodiaialy aftr roloasod from tha mombrano cartridges. [AXS=880° Operation using underground water with high concentration of iron, manganses, calcium, and silica may alsa caune a membrane fouling. (7) ‘Start the asrstion blower, and maks surs that it opsratss normally ta provids uniform aeration in the MER tank. * Foaming is a normal phenomenon, caused by the hydrophilic agant coated an the membrane cartridges (2) When using only a single blowsr to provide air fo multiple membrane units, check to ses that air supply is balanced to each uni. If air supplied fo each unit is extremely unbalanced, re-check the piping configuration (specifically re-check whsther a praper bsader piping is chosen and whether the pipes are net too small) and operational concition of aiftuser. (8) Stop zeration immadiataly after “clean water" test operation is completed, [Aerning | Please do not perfonm aeration as much as possible when filtration is suspended. Aeration without filtration for a long time may result in. damage on membrane cartridges. [i Caution | Became clean water operation may cause a membrane Fouling, awa longer-4orm operation than itis necoxary A) Smition | After clean water test operation is completed, newer dry out the membrane cartridges. The-dried membrane becomes hydrophobic and results in a low permeability. [4] Studge Seeding (1) Direct membrane filtration of raw wastewater may cause & membrane fauling ‘Therstore, please ssed sludge info the MBR tana immsciately bafore starting ths actual opsration in ordar to treat the wastewater biologically. (2) His recommend fo use fresh activated sludge usually used for nitrification and Sanitrification prooass. The mars the sludos is seeded, the more stable the initial concition becomes. (2) Seed proper amount of activated sludgs into the MER tank so that the sludge eoncentration in the MBR tank (MLSS) will ba more than 3,000 ma/L (praferably 6,000 mg/L er more). Before seeding activated sludge into the MBR tank, make sureto remove all the debris from the sludge by passing through abar screen with Imm openings. ‘Seod sludge into the tank immedistely before the actual operation starts (wastewater flows into tie tank). the seeded sludge has pulreflactive odor, perform aeralion unl the putrefactive odor disappears (for 1 hour at the maximum), and thon start filiration_ hit [5] Actual Operation (7) In order to avoid membrans cartridge damage. supplied air amount per unit must Bs kept within the rangs of 2.8 to 4.0Nm min. (home| Ifthe MLSS concentration lowers to 2,000 mg/L or lees during the actual operation, seed additional activated sludge into the MBR tank 20 that the MLSS-will be kept at 3,000 mg/L or higher. (2) When ths parmeate flow rate beoomas stable, measure the permeate flow rate during the actual operation and additionally maasure the TMP. 24 Please not io perform aeration as much as possible when filiration| is suspended. Aeration without filtration for a long fime may result in damage on membrane cartridges. (3) fusing an antifoaming agent is unavoidable due to foaming in the MBR tank, use petroleum fype antifazming agant. Do nat use silisan type antfaaming agant sinos it leads to a mambeane fouling, (Our racommendad praduct: Distoam GC-118 made by NOF Gamporation) Never put chemicals that have an artverse effect on activated sludge, such ag toxic substances and large amount. of cils, into tho-tank. ‘Avoid abrupt change in temperature, pH, and/or pressure, even if the change is within the normal operational range-specified for tsp sMu_ (4) The followings ars the indications for grasping a performance of Kubota membrana bioreactor (MBR). [In-Situ Chemical Cleaning Methog] Cleaning Procedure 1. Chemical Solution Preparation Organic fouling of the membrane mioro-poras can be olsanad by using a dilute solution of bleach (sodium hypochlorite/NaCiO). Used chemical (10 to 12% sodium hypochlorite solution) should be ciiuted 20 times, and make 5 L of the dilute cleaning solution per cartridge, However. if the sludge concentration is lower than 10,000 mgiL, dilute the chemical 40 timas. If minerats (ex. Hard water, iran, aluminum, others) sxist in waste water to be treated by membranes, oxalic or citric acid might be nacessary to recover membrane perfarmancs Prepare about 6 L of 0.5 to 1.0% oxalic acid eolution par cartridge. (But ifthe membrans cartridge is polluted with Ca, NEVER use oxalic acid. Hydrochloric acid or citric acid or etc should be utilized.) 2. Aeration and Filtration Suspension Suspend the eration and filtration of SMU to bs chemically cleaned ‘Stop the operation of eration blower(s) and permeate pump(s) and close the permeate vaive(s). 3. Chemical Solution Pouring (Ths pouring port must be praviously provided} Make sure that the liquid lavel is at the normal operation Pour the chemical solution prepared ints the chemical port to avery mambrans cartridge (Pouring time should take betwoan 8 to 18 minutos.) As a guide, it should take approximately 2 hours for cleaning organic substancas, and 1 hour far cleaning inorganic substances. 5. Re-starting Operation After the Recovery Cleaning First 20 minutes after restarting filtration, return the permeata to the head of the facility (usually equalization tani or anazicidenirification tank). In the case of organic cleaning, after making sure the residual chlorine conosntration in the permeate becomes law ‘enough (10 mg/L ar less), restart the normal operation. Bscause aur rscovery cleaning mathod is such that the chaminal solution flows back slowly having a ltts pressure from the permaats side to activated sludge sids, tt is effective to clean the membrana before the membrane is fully fouled, or during the period whan increase: in fitration pressure is still small since the operation started, [Chemical Handling Instructions] jerins] Please read the Matorial Safety Data Sheat (MSDS) carefully beforehand when using the following chemicals 12% Sodium Hypachlonte / NECIO 1 Storage Precautions 2) Store in a cool, darks place. Stopping filtration Because membranes ars not to bs scoured by air and the MLSS circulation from the bottom during the cleaning, stop ihe permeate pump/s) (or close permeate valve for siphon filtrabon) to stop mixed liquor filtration. (At this time, the aeration blawer(s) is/are stil operational.) 2 Opening Cleaning Valve Opsn the clsaning valve located above tha water surface of the MBA tank, then tha MBR mixed liquor will ba sucked into the diffusers and be vented to atmosphere through cleaning valve as cleaning inside the diffusers. Gloss the diffuser cleaning valve in 1 to Sminutes. if diffuser perfarmancs is not improved, the proosdure should be repeated. 3. Diffusers Pecfarmance Recovery ‘After the diffuser cleaning valve is closed, inspect SMU air patierns appear even and equal, and restart the permeais pumps to start the operation again. 4. For Automated Diffuser Cleaning System: a) Open the automatic valve for claaning upon stapping the permeate pump. b) Clean the diffusers for 1 to 5 minutes atisast once a day. ©) In. to 2 minutes after closing the automatic cleaning valve, operate the parmeaic pump again. * When operating the permeate pump, mabe sure thatthe automatic vahe closed ‘Vai fr Fig. 6-2 Dituser Cleaning Method Pe. 5-1 Diffuser Cleaning 6.
