This lesson was created for course work in EDTC 650 Social Media in

Education in March 2016. It was designed for my K-8th grade classes, but
can be used at multiple schools in order to include both elementary and
middle school grades. My participants, in this project, are all PreK-8th
grade classrooms and students on our campus. Parents (and also any student
that is absent during the activities) can also be invited to watch the live feed
of the book readings and lesson activities. The goal of the learners in this
lesson is to link activities across the curriculum while celebrating Read
Across America Week and Dr. Seuss birthday. The context of my lesson is
using the Periscope App to create a live feed of activities led by different
students in different grades levels for other classrooms to tune in and watch.
Students will be engaged in Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, as well
as Humanities for these activities. The social media platform, Periscope, best
suits this lesson in terms of broadcasting students and their instructions to
multiple classrooms, broadcasting student work/models, as well as
broadcasting students thoughts and reflections. The use of Periscope in this
lesson will enhance student learning by motivating students to be actively
engaged.

This Dr. Seuss and Periscope Lesson fits into my professional work in that it
benefits the learners by giving them the opportunity to improve their
speaking skills and confidence while giving their reflections of their
creation. The use of Periscope improves the lesson by giving the student a
wider audience to communicate to, other than just their peers in their own
classroom, in accordance with program standards in Kentucky and the
National Standards, as well.

Mastery of these standards within this lesson impacts my professional work

by demonstrating how that I as the teachers can guide and support my
students in learning more about social media and live broadcasting. I
acknowledge that guidelines for use of Periscope utilizing all of the privacy
features available and creating a private account to ensure the audience of
the broadcast will be limited and approved. This will protect the privacy of
the students. I am able to determine that the use of Periscope in this lesson is
really enhancing the lesson by the feedback of all the students and teachers
with a short survey or questionnaire at the end of the day. For instance, if
most students and Teachers felt that the use of Periscope was more useful by
keeping students engaged and encouraging more student participation, then I
will be able to determine that the use of Periscope enhanced the lesson. If
Teachers and students felt that the use of Periscope was too time consuming,
did not encourage or motivate students, or there were too many technical
difficulties for classes to be involved, then I will be able to determine that
the use of Periscope did not enhance the lesson.
