Fromthearchitect.TheGettyCenteroccupiesanarrow,hillystretchhighabovetheSanDiegoFreewayinLos
AngelesCalifornia.JuttingsouthwardfromtheSantaMonicaMountains,themuseumsacropolislikestature
affordsspectacularviewsoverthecity,themountainsandtheocean.

Coined,thecommissionofthecentury,this$1billionartsfacilitybeganin1984withthemandatetoadvance
knowledgeandnurturecriticalseeingthroughthegrowthandpresentationofitscollectionsandbyadvancingthe
understandingandpreservationoftheworld'sartisticheritage.TodaytheMuseumspermanentcollection
containsGreekandRomanantiquities,18thcenturyFrenchfurnitureandEuropeanpaintings,andisvisitedby
morethan1.8millionpeopleayear.

Completedin1997,RichardMeiersprogrambringsthesevencomponentsoftheGettyTrustintoacoherent
unity,whilemaintainingtheirindividualidentities.Thelayoutestablishesadialoguebetweentheangleof
intersectionandanumberofcurvilinearformsthatarelargelyderivedfromthecontoursofthesiteinflectedby
theFreeway,themetropolitangridandthenaturaltopographytheoverallpartsrelatetoboththeCityofLos
AngelesandtheSantaMonicaMountains.

TheCentercoversalmost100,000squarefeetofarea,andisorganizedalongtworidgesinthetopographyofthe
110acreparcel.

TheMuseumactsasthecenterpieceandthemainentrancetotheCenter.Steppingoffthetramthattakesyoufrom

thebaseofthemountainandparkingareatotheWelcomeCenterandintotheMuseum.Theentrancelobbyhasa
sunlitcircularfoyer,andprovidesviewsthroughthecourtyardtogallerystructuresarrayedinacontinuous
sequence.

ThroughouttheMuseumthereisalayeringinsectionbetweenpaintings,illuminatedbyskylightsonthetopfloor
andartworkswhichmustbeshieldedfromultravioletlightonthelowerlevels.
Thesmallerpavilionbuildings,connectedbygardens,breakdownthescaleofthemuseumexperienceallowing
forpausesandencouraginginterplaybetweentheinteriorandexterior.

Eachpavilionclusterhasitsownatriumwithanadjacentstairwayandelevatorlinkingthesculpturedrawing,
manuscript,andphotographygalleriesonthefirstfloortothepaintingsandgalleriesabove.

A450seatauditorium,westoftheGettyTrustofficesandtheArtHistoryInformationProgram,terminatethe
eastelevation.TheGettyConservationInstitution,TheGettyCenterforEducation,andTheGettyGrantProgram
takeadvantageoftheclimatethroughtheuseofloggias,pergolasandfullheightglazingattheexternal
perimeter.Alongthemoresecludedwesternridge,theGettyResearchInstitutefortheHistoryofArtandthe
Humanitiescompletesthecomplex.

TheGettyCenterwasthefirstbuildingtobeLEEDcertifiedafterthestandardwasestablishedbytheU.S.Green
BuildingCouncil(USGBC)in1998.ItisareflectionofRichardMeier&Partnersdesignphilosophythat
innatelyconsiderssustainableelementslikenaturallight,circulationandenergysavingtechnologiesand
materials.
