The Depths of Humility

In 1831, the Lord gave the Prophet Joseph Smith a wonderful missionary revelation
which was to serve as the Preface for the Doctrine and Covenants. In this revelation
he states, And the voice of warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my
disciples, whom I have chosen in these last days. And they shall go forth and none
shall stay them, for I the Lord have commanded them. (D & C 1:4-5) Later in the
same Section, the Lord states, That the fullness of my gospel might be proclaimed by
the weak and the simple unto the ends of the world,.. These two statements might
be thought of as contradictory since one says this work will be done by the weak and
simple and the other says they will be unstoppable. The world might suggest that they
need to be strong and intellectual to be unstoppable. Further adding to this
interesting dilemma are the scriptures that tell his missionaries that they must be
humble to be successful. That is not exactly the kind of formula the world would
suggest for an unstoppable group of advocates for a cause. However, the Lords
ways are not mens ways and the Lord understands that the Holy Ghost cannot
function in the soul of someone arrogant, pseudo-intellectual, and self-aggrandizing.
The Lord has said that no one can assist with this work unless he is humble and full of
love (D&C 12:8). D&C 4:6 talks about the Godly attributes one must possess to be
qualified for the ministry: Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience,
brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence. Again that attribute,
humble, comes up. King Benjamin counselled that we, Humble yourselves even in
the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly
in the faith of that which is to come. I believe that humility is one of the most
important of Christ-like attributes and absolutely essential to being a successful
missionary.
Humility does not mean weakness. It does not mean timidity; it does not mean fear.
A man can be humble and also fearless. A man can be humble and also
courageous. Humility is recognizing that you are accepting of a superior power and
influence to guide your life. It recognizes that, as Moses said, Now, for this cause I
know that man is nothing, which thing I never had supposed. Humility is recognition
of our dependence upon a higher power, a constant need for the Lords support in

His work. To the humble, the Lord has given this promise: If men come unto me I will
show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble;
and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they
humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, they will I make weak things
become strong unto them. (Ether 12:27)
As a young missionary in Bakersfield, California, I learned the importance of humility
and relying on the Lord. I recognized that I couldnt do this work alone and that when I
tried to argue or Bible bash, nothing good ever came of it. Quoting scripture and
relaying the Lessons in a word perfect fashion was also not enough to convert people.
Only the Holy Ghost has the ability to convert and to change peoples hearts. I often
found myself thinking of the words of the song, I Need Thee Every Hour. I came to the
realization that I really couldnt even go an hour without His Divine help. I came to the
realization that a man of God is always humble because he has an acute awareness of
his place in the Universealways subservient to and dependent on the Lord. We,
essentially, become conduits through whom the Holy Ghost does his teaching and
converting. People see someone humble and they are drawn to them, often because
they feel comfortable in their presence. They listen carefully when a humble man
speaks because they know he is not promoting himself or his own agenda. Kindness
and humility go hand in hand and the people respond to humble kindness. People
intuitively recognize humility as a God-like virtue and those who possess it see their
credibility as a man or woman of God increase exponentially. The Saviors humility was
best manifested by his constant statements that he was here to do the will of his
FatherNOT his own.
I am grateful for the humble missionaries in the Spain Barcelona Mission. I see it in
them every day as I see them take care of their investigators with such love and
tenderness. This last week the Lord rewarded El Faro with .11 baptisms!!---another
wonderful blessing from our Heavenly Father because of the humility and hard work of
you great souls. I love you and feel honored to work by your side. Let me conclude
with this sweet poem penned years ago and given to us by President Spencer W Kimball
who also was the source of some of the thoughts above:
Father, where shall I work today?
And my love flowed warm and free.
Then He pointed me out a tiny spot
And said, Tend that for me.
I answered quickly, Oh no, no that!
Why, no one would ever see,
No matter how well my work was done;
Not that little place for me.

And the words He spoke, they were not stern,

He answered me tenderly,
Ah, little one, search that heart of thine:
Art thou working for them or me?
Nazareth was a little place,
And so was Galilee.

May we humble ourselves to the depths of humility that we may be effective

instruments in the hands of the Lord.
Humildemente,
President Merril T Dayton

Justice vs. Corruption

Justice is taking personal responsibility to uphold what is pure, right and true. In
the scriptures we are taught much about justice. It is an active expression of the
will and nature of God. Justice requires that we confirm the truths found in the
scriptures and then we carry them out. The word DO often precedes the word
justice, "Do justice to the afflicted and needy" Psalm 82:3 The Savior fulfilled the
just demands of the law by substituting His sinless life for our sins through His death
on the cross. Justice is frequently used in conjunction with judgment.
It is easy for us to recognize when we see others doing things that are wrong--for
example, when another person lies to get someone else in trouble, when
someone scams a group of people, or when someone shoplifts. It is harder for us
to see the injustice when we don't cooperate with others, we yell at someone or
we even forget to return a pen. Justice motivates a person to do the right thing
because it is the right thing to do.
I once attended a class where the instructor was teaching the power of being
100% in doing what was right. She had a delicious looking chocolate cake and
offered each of us a piece. In the cake she had put a "little" bit of dirt--that's
right... dirt! You can imagine how awful it was when we took a bite. She taught us
that each time we make a "little compromise in life, each time we make a
wrong choice we expose ourselves to more serious temptations. She taught us
that one small lie leads to the next and then the next and the next. A little laziness
leads to more the next day and the next. Neglecting tasks and responsibilities
today make it easier to neglect them tomorrow and an addiction fed today
strengthens it. It is the little things we do daily that make all the difference! She

taught us that we demonstrate justice when we take personal responsibility for our
thoughts, actions and even our past behavior. That a person gains confidence
and earns credibility when they do what is right consistently.
I love reading Proverbs in the Bible. It was written to give the instruction of
wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity. Proverbs 1:3. Consider a few of these
scriptures, Wisdom is the principal thing: therefore get wisdom: and with all
thy getting get understanding. Proverbs 4:7. only by pride cometh contention:
but with the well advised is wisdom. Proverbs 13:10 and Correction is grievous
unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die. Proverbs
15:10.
We can apply justice to missionary work by:
--Setting high standards for ourselves in pure thoughts, right actions, 100%
obedience to mission rules, etc.
--Dealing with disobedience with a companion quickly, not letting something little
turn into something big.
--Obeying both the intent and letter of the law and mission rules.
--Holding ourselves to the same standard of what is right and what is wrong.
--In every situation ask ourselves, is this true, is this right... and then act accordingly.
I know that as we desire to do what is right and then discipline ourselves to do
the right thing, we will have a clear conscience which brings joy.
May each of us make a commitment to be just in all that we do as disciples of
Jesus Christ for that is what He would do.

From the desk of the Ayudantes

Queridos Misioneros,
El Faro burns bright. It truly was an incredible time seeing each of you
in the Zone Conferences these past few weeks. You inspire and uplift
us. We thank you for coming so prepared and for your participation
and testimonies shared. WE LOVE YOU!
As you all remember, we spoke about Following All the Way Up.
And so of course, as promised, we wanted to follow up on just that!
Are we filling up/using all of our agendas now?
Are we taking commitments a bit more seriously?
We are trying it out ourselves, and are seeing great results! Below, we
have listed a basic outline of what we taughtplease remember to
let us know if you have a question about it.
Lastly, Elderes and Hermanas, we just want you all to know how
grateful we are to be serving alongside you. We are soldiers in the
Army of God! Its been a great few weeks in the missionlets keep it
going!
With all the love in the world,
Los Ayudantes
