EXPERIMENT NO. 4
NAME OF EXPERIMENT: - Mannings rugosity coefficient

AIM OF EXPERIMENT: - to determine Mannings rugosity coefficient.

APPARATUS: - Pointer gauge, scale, laboratory flume.

THEORY: - An open channel flow is said to be uniform if the depth of flow does not change
from section to section at any instant of time. This means that the depth everywhere in the
reach under consideration is the same at any instant of time.one primary condition for the
uniform flow to exist is that the driving force (due to gravity) is equal to the resisting force
(due to friction).
For uniform flow in an open channel, the mean velocity, v is given by:
1

v = R 3 So 2
n

Where n= Mannings coefficient of roughness to be determined.

R=hydraulic radius
So =slope of channel bed.

PROCEDURE:1. Select a no. of sections in the central part of the flume.

These sections may be 20 to 30 cm apart. Take the pointer gauge reading for the bed levels
at these sections.
2. Open the supply valve. Adjust the discharge from the two controlling gates so as to get a
suitable value of depth of flow in the flume.
3. Wait until flow becomes uniform at which condition the depth of flow at the section
chosen in step (1) must be same. Take the pointer gauge reading for water surface
elevations at these sections.
4. Measure the discharge with the help of a measuring tank.
5. Repeat steps (2) to (4) for other values of discharge.
