It is a sad and tragic fact that most people on planet earth do not enjoy the best health
and wellness possible most of the time. In fact the seriousness of this global crisis in
healthcare is borne out by the Global Burden of Disease study which was published in
the medical journal, the Lancet and which confirmed that the worlds population is getting
sicker. The largest analysis of global health trends from 1990 to 2013 found that only 4%
of the global population experienced no health problems in 2013 while a third , or
2.3 billion people, were burdened with more than five health problems each!.

Now not only is this healthcare crisis of immense proportions but it also has many
aspects to it, one of them being affordability. In fact the situation is so extreme that
according to the World Health Organization 100 million people a year are pushed into
poverty by their medical bills! Another is the distressing reality of an increasing
epidemic of chronic and preventable diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension
(high blood pressure), heart disease, anxiety and depression, asthma, obesity and others
- and of course not forgetting the shocking explosion in the number of people suffering
(and dying) from perhaps that nasty of all nasties, the cancer scourge.

But what about disease and dysfunction due to genetic factors? Is it not true that there is
nothing people can do about conditions they have inherited? Nope. This is false. In fact
this is one of the many fallacies which keep people sick and perpetuate the healthcare
crisis. The truth is that only a small percentage of disease and dysfunction is primarily
due to genetic factors (less than 5 percent). Most disease and dysfunction is caused by
factors such as chronic stress, poor nutrition and bad lifestyles, all of which are
completely preventable! And even if a person has inherited genes that increase his or her
risk of disease and dysfunction this risk can be minimized or eliminated by getting rid of
persistent stress and having the right diet and a good lifestyle!

So the good news is that regardless of whether you have inherited diseasecausing genes or not, by optimizing each of the ten dimensions described below,
including eliminating chronic stress from your life, eating nutritious foods and
living a healthy lifestyle you can get to enjoy the best health and wellness possible

In fact if each of the ten specific dimensions of health and wellness which I have

Is This Really Possible?


Yes it is. How do I know? Well, I have generally been living a healthy lifestyle for many
years now but since applying the principles of optimal health and wellness to my life with
commitment and consistency, I have experienced amazing results. Here are some
comments I received over the years from family, friends and colleagues and a few
pictures too. However before we get to these I must mention that the only reason I am
sharing them with you is that, according to the marketing experts it is important to provide
ones audience or readers with proof of results that have been achieved, either by ones
self or ones clients (or both of course). However I do feel somewhat uncomfortable
talking about myself since it may be misconstrued as bragging. I can assure you though
that I am absolutely not. Its not who I am. What I am thinking though is What the heck, if

If Optimal Health And Wellness Is Possible Why Is There A Global Healthcare


Crisis?
The complete answer to this question is multi-faceted and therefore unfortunately beyond
the scope of this book. However there are two main causes in my view and you can read
more about them here. In any case to put it simply: The global healthcare crisis is about
human beings and anything and everything about human beings - including their health
and wellness - fundamentally boils down to the human mind. And specifically the
subconscious mind because it is the subconscious mind which controls more than 95
percent of our lives. So it is largely subconsciously-encoded beliefs, feelings and
programs which drive people to do things which are detrimental to their health and
wellness. It is these subconsciously-driven destructive beliefs, feelings, behaviors and
habits such as not eating nutritious foods, having bad lifestyle habits such as smoking or
not exercising for example and the direct impact of chronic stress itself that are ultimately
responsible for the crisis. And it is also the belief system of those who make our laws

Now here are a few questions I would like you to consider:


1. Are you someone who is currently struggling with health and wellness issues?

I have read so many books about the subconscious mind but this one was the icing on
the cake for me. It is very short and precise. I have found that by reading many books
on this subject, I have learnt something new every time and something sinks in further
into my brain. Well this book did just that. I now feel that I don't have to purchase

How Did I Get To Know This Stuff?


Well, the thing that triggered my interest in helping individuals and companies to enhance
their health, wellness and performance, rather than focus entirely on disease
management as I was trained to do, actually stems from a negative career experience I
had just more than a decade ago. Now following this unfortunate experience my curiosity
was ignited as to what had actually been happening in the minds of the people of the
company, especially its leaders, and of course my own mind, to bring it about.

Research quest
And so I embarked on a research quest to find the answers to these burning questions
that I had. Now as a medical student and doctor I had always had an interest in the brain
and the neurological and mental disorders that afflict it. And since it was the brain and
minds of people that were central to this experience I was interested to know what
exactly had been happening here, not only at a superficial level but right down at the
cellular and DNA levels.

And since my problems obviously stemmed from organizational culture and leadership
issues, I was deeply interested to know what had been happening at the deep cellular
level in our minds with respect to these issues. I of course knew that the root of the
problems lay within the culture and leadership of the company because the research
thesis which I completed as part of a business administration degree I had done involved
the very subject of organizational culture! And so during the course of my research
which included amazing journeys through the fascinating subjects of brain science,
cellular biology, energy psychology and quantum physics amongst others, I discovered

the most unbelievable facts about the human brain and mind, especially the
subconscious mind and how to reprogram it using various practices and technologies.
And of course I felt compelled to write a report on the subject.

Further research
In fact I was so amazed by what I had discovered that I decided to further my research,
first into the brain science of goal achievement and then stress management. I chose
these as my next topics of research because the negative experience both scuppered the
goals I had planned at the time and was quite stressful.

Application of knowledge
So after gaining all this new knowledge, I applied what I had learnt to my own life and the
results I experienced were nothing short of amazing. For example I lost almost 22
kilograms of weight to reach my ideal body weight and have lived a life free of on-going
stress for many years now. I have also remained around my ideal body weight since
reaching it and have achieved many other goals since applying what I have learnt.

The Brain Science Academy


As you may know, or have personally experienced, with crisis comes opportunity. And
one of the opportunities which came my way following my negative experience was that
of the position of a ships doctor aboard cruise ships in the Caribbean (which was an
amazing experience, the highlight of my career at that point I would say). Anyway, one
day I was sitting in my cabin and thinking about all the research I had done and how the
application of my new-found knowledge had made such a positive difference in my own
life. And since I realized that this knowledge is something which any individual and
organization interested in improving themselves should know about, I wondered how I
could get this extremely valuable information out to as many of them as possible. Then
the idea of the Brain Science Academy came to mind. Now since a large part of my
research involved brain science, it seemed like an appropriate name for the teaching
entity I planned to set up. But I was wrong. For some reason the name seemed not to
appeal to many people. And unexpectedly some people thought I was a specialist brain
scientist!

8 Myths That Keep People Sick And Perpetuate The Healthcare Crisis
As Ive mentioned it is the subconscious mind which controls more than 95 percent of our
lives. And subconsciously - encoded beliefs play a big role in this control. In fact it is our
subconscious beliefs which largely determine our behavioral and biological reality. Below
are 8 myths or false beliefs which ensure that people remain vulnerable to disease and
dysfunction and the perpetuation of the crisis in healthcare.

1. Your doctor knows best when it comes to your health and wellness
This is not true at all. Unfortunately the training of conventional doctors largely involves
management of the illnesses and diseases of their patients rather than the optimization of
their health and wellness. So despite the good intentions of conventionally-trained
doctors with respect to the health and wellness of their patients they are not equipped to
bring about any lasting changes in their lives in this regard. Actually the sad fact is that
conventional doctors are not involved in healthcare at all but in illness and disease
management. The term healthcare when used conventionally is a (deceptive) misnomer.

2. Your illness is due to genetic factors and there is nothing you can do about it
As mentioned only a small percentage of illness and disease is due to genetics. Most
diseases, as also mentioned, are caused by factors which are completely preventable
and reversible - such as chronic stress, poor diet and bad lifestyles. And even if you have
inherited genes that increase your risk of disease you can minimize and eliminate this
risk with the right diet, a healthy lifestyle and living a life free of on-going stress.

Again not true. Have you noticed that the more hospitals and clinics that are built the
more sick people there seems to be?

6. Pharmaceutical drugs prevent or cure the root cause of illness and disease
They, sadly, do not.

7. Only your doctor, pharmaceutical drugs or health authorities can heal you
In other words you have no role in your own health and wellbeing. Not true once again. In
essence the only person that can really heal you is YOU! But not without Gods will of
course.

Conventional

medicine

is

advanced,

state

of

the

art

medicine

Western medicine, Im saddened to say, is backwards in many respects and not as


advanced as what many, if not most, people perceive it to be. For example it does not
meaningfully acknowledge the role of nutrition in preventing disease; it fails to largely
acknowledge the mind-body connection in disease and healing; it does not seem to
understand the significant differences between living and dead food (or raw and cooked
food) and it does not acknowledge the bio energy field of living systems.

So What Is The Solution?


What is needed to reduce vulnerability to illness and disease is a change of
subconscious beliefs regarding illness and disease and health and wellness. By
neutralizing self-sabotaging, self-destructive beliefs and programming-in new health and
wellness - enhancing beliefs, new feelings, behaviors and habits will consequently be
generated. But what behaviors and habits are necessary for enjoying an enhanced, and
even optimal, state of health and wellness? Behaviors and habits related specifically to
the ten dimensions of health and wellness which I have mentioned previously. And they
are

I will now describe them in turn. These are only very brief descriptions since a
comprehensive discussion of each of them is, once again, beyond the scope of this
publication.

Dimension 1: Ideal Nutrition


The best, optimally-nutritious foods are fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and oily
fish. They contain all the ingredients which are necessary for the healthiest digestion,
including essential fatty acids which are vital for overall health and well-being. The
essential fats, viz. the omega-3s for example, act as powerful natural painkillers and antidepressants and also lower the risk of heart disease.
Besides the omegas, the other essential fatty acids are the phospholipids which make up
about 50% of the fat content of the brain and play a vital role in both its structure and
function. Another nutrient which is crucial for optimal health and wellness is Vitamin D
which keeps bones strong, prevents cancer, boosts immunity and is vital for the proper
functioning of the brain and nervous system.
Of course there are also foods which cause illness and disease and which should be
eaten as little of the time as possible but preferably avoided altogether. These bad foods
include most grains (especially wheat), dairy products, processed salt, sugar-containing
foods or snacks, refined or highly-processed foods or snacks and non-green, non-herbal
teas, coffees and colas. Red meat, specifically non-grass-fed, factory-farmed meat
should also be avoided. On the other hand organic, free-range, grass-fed meat is
healthy.

Dimension 2: Stress-free Living


Chronic or on-going stress is the most common cause of disease and dysfunction. It is
the underlying reason for arguably more than ninety percent of the emotional and
physical afflictions which plague humanity. But what is stress? Stress is the experience
we have in response to exposure to one or more stressors. And the reason why the

stress response is triggered by a stressor is due to the perceived threat that the stressor
poses to the survival or well-being of the person exposed to it. There are generally three
types of stressors viz. physical (such as trauma to the body or exposure to extreme
temperatures), chemical (such as exposure to pollutants and toxins including those found
in processed foods and processed foods themself) and psychological. Arguably the most
common are the latter. They include negative thoughts generated by perceived
threatening situations and memories which are stored in all the cells of the body. The
latter are also known as cellular memories which are implicit or subconscious
memories. Now there are specifically three types of implicit cellular memories which are
responsible for most of the stress and consequent illness and disease which afflicts the
majority of human beings across the globe. They include Inherited Memories (memories
inherited from previous generations), Early Childhood Memories (memories acquired
during 0 6 years of age when language and cognitive or thinking skills are
underdeveloped) and Trauma-related Memories (memories resulting from traumatic
situations experienced at any time during a persons life).
So what does stress actually do to people? Besides killing them prematurely (which is of
course its most devastating effect) chronic stress also has numerous other negative
consequences such as premature aging, weakening of the immune system and
increasing vulnerability to cancer and infections. On-going stress also makes people less
productive. And of course stress makes people financially poorer. And finally there are a
number of tools, technologies and practices which can be used to manage and eliminate
stress. Amongst them are Brainwave Entrainment and Emotional Freedom Techniques

Dimension 3: Ideal Body Weight Maintenance


This dimension is fundamentally about balancing the blood sugar. The body depends on
a steady and even blood sugar level to function normally and when this requirement is
met the person feels energized, has no craving for sugar or stimulants and loses weight
rapidly. People whose blood sugar level remains balanced within the normal limits also
experience better mood control with less anxiety, depression and aggressive feelings and
behavior. They also concentrate better and have better memories. On the other hand
blood sugar which is out of control, either frequently rising above the normal limits or
dropping below it, is associated with a plethora of symptoms, including hunger and
fatigue, poor concentration, irritability, nervousness, sweating and craving for sugar and
stimulants for example. The key though to achieving and maintaining a steady, even
normal blood sugar level is to

Control the Glycaemic Load (GL) of the diet

The Glycaemic Load of a food is the combination of the Glycaemic Index of the food
(which is a measure of how fast or slow the carbohydrate in the food releases sugar into
the blood stream) with the Quantity of carbohydrate in the food (in grams). The GL of a
food is a measure of how much weight gain is associated with eating that food. A low GL
diet is imperative for keeping blood sugar levels steady and even within the normal
range. Besides this rule, other rules for meeting this goal include eating carbohydrate
with protein, eating small amounts often rather than having one or two big meals a day
(eat breakfast, lunch and supper and a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack) and

reducing or eliminating stimulants from the diet. It has been found that cinnamon also
helps to balance blood sugar levels.

Dimension 4: Excellent Physical Fitness


There is sufficient irrefutable evidence that exercise is extremely good for the body and
mind. Numerous studies have confirmed that exercise is highly effective in preventing all
kinds of modern-day diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer for example.
Despite the massive benefits derived from exercise many people dont engage in regular
physical exercise, one of the reasons being the belief that an equally massive effort
needs to be made to get these benefits. This puts them off but it is of course not true. In
fact research has shown that just 15 minutes of jogging or 30 minutes of brisk walking
daily reduces the risk of premature death by 20 percent. Even more effective is High
Intensity Interval Training. But not only does physical exercise increase our chances of
living longer it also prevents physical deterioration of the brain. Evidence has been found
that older people who exercise have denser brains than those who dont (the brain loses
volume and becomes less dense with aging). Further benefits of physical activity include
lower levels of stress including reduction in anxiety and depression, promotion of weight
loss, improved bone health and increasing joint strength and flexibility amongst others.

Physical activity is vital for a healthy state of mind and body

Dimension 5: Ideal Brain and Body Chemistry


The key chemical process underlying optimal physiological balance or homeostasis is
something known as methylation. This vital process can be considered to be the team
coach of the bodys chemical team, guiding and instructing the team to the best
physiological performance.

Methylation is a process whereby chemicals known as

methyl groups are added to or removed from proteins, DNA and other molecules to
keep them working effectively. Methylation involves the substitution of an atom or group
of atoms or molecules by a methyl group. More than one billion methylation reactions
occur in the body every second and optimal brain and body functioning requires an
optimal methylation process. In fact when this is not the case the consequences are poor
concentration, low mood, lack of motivation and many other symptoms related to
suboptimal brain and body functioning. Apart from the inadequate repair of DNA and an
increase in inflammation amongst others, the most serious negative consequence of an
inadequate methylation process is an increase in homocysteine levels. Methylation of
homocysteine is probably the most important methylation process and an increase of this
toxic chemical in the blood causes serious damage to the brain and body. The
homocysteine level in the blood (which I refer to as the H-Point) is a reflection of the
effectiveness of the methylation process and is the single most important health
measure. In fact experts on the subject are of the opinion that

And to keep your methylation process running smoothly and effectively with your
homocysteine level maintained below six requires an optimal intake of the B vitamins.
The key homocysteine-lowering nutrients in this group are vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid.
However vitamin B2 in addition to zinc and TMG are important too. The H-Point is directly
related to the intake of these nutrients from the diet and supplements, rising when
inadequate and falling below six when adequate.

Dimension 6: Free Flow of Essential Energy


You are probably aware of the fact that everything, including yourself, is energy. And all
energy, including a special type of energy which is critical for health and wellbeing, has
three characteristics, namely a frequency, a wavelength and a color spectrum. I call this
critically-important energy Essential Energy. Why? Because it is not only essential for
health and wellbeing but for life in general. Different cultures have different terms for this
energy. For example the Chinese refer to it as Chi, the Japanese as Ki and the Indians
as Prana. When essential energy is flowing freely through the bodys meridians health
and wellness is good and when this free flow is blocked disease and dysfunction results.
In fact many of the longest living populations in various parts of the world engage in daily
practices and exercises which enable the free flow of essential energy. These people
hardly ever or even never get sick and die of old age rather than illness and disease.
These practices and exercises include tai chi, qigong, prayer and meditation, breathing
exercises and yoga. In addition to enabling the free flow of essential energy through the
meridians, they also enable essential energy to be drawn into the body from the external
environment. Another recently-developed practice (as compared to the others) which

unblocks meridians and allows energy to flow freely through them is Emotional Freedom
Techniques (EFT).
It has been shown that practices and exercises which enhance the free flow of essential
energy provide benefits over and above those provided by usual aerobic exercise. They
significantly enhance physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.

Dimension 7: Ideal Hydration


Water is the most abundant and most important nutrient in the human body, with two
thirds of it consisting of this substance. Water is in fact critical to human life and without it
life is not possible. In fact all living things are created from water. So it is important to take
in sufficient amounts of water every day to ensure that those physiological processes
which depend on it can take place effectively and efficiently. It is important to get into the
habit of drinking enough water every day.
But how much water is actually needed each day? Adult males require between 1.2 and
3 liters per day while adult females between 1.2 and 2.2 liters per day, which is, on
average, equivalent to about 8 glasses. However it is not necessary to actually drink 8
glasses of water since almost 1/5th (about 19%) of our daily water requirement comes
from the food we eat, especially fresh fruit and vegetables.
How should water be taken? Your body retains more water if you drink it in small
amounts throughout the day rather than all in one go. So this then is the best way to drink
it. And it is also best drunk alone rather than mixed with anything. Furthermore it is best
to drink filtered water from a tap rather than unfiltered water since this often contains
dangerous impurities including lead, aluminum and nitrates for example.

The consequences of not taking in sufficient water each day are many. Some of the
short-term consequences include thirst, headaches, poor concentration and mental
clarity, fatigue and poor digestion amongst others while long term consequences include
weight gain (water enhances metabolism and promotes weight loss), kidney stones,
cancer and depression for example.

Dimension 8: Aging Reversal


Research into the aging process has revealed, amazingly, that it can be slowed down
and even reversed! So in essence people have two ages viz. their chronological age
(which is their age in time or years) and their biological age or real age (which is their
age based on the current state of their physiological functioning. This includes the current
state of the physical structure of their bodies and that of their motor skills and sensory
awareness). Biological age can of course be the same, lower or higher than
chronological age. The process which determines how fast or slow a person ages and
hence their biological age - is known as oxidation. This involves combusting
carbohydrates with oxygen to produce energy. The products of this combustion are
chemicals known as free radicals or oxidants. Although a certain level of free radicals are
helpful to the body, in large concentrations they are toxic and cause major damage to
DNA, cells and tissues resulting in the many negative physical and mental effects of
aging such as poor eyesight, poor hearing, wrinkling of the skin, deterioration of memory
and concentration and many others. However it is not only these internally-generated
free radicals which hasten the aging process. A significant part of the aging process
results from exposure to externally-produced free radicals, such as those produced from
cigarette smoke and air pollution for example.

So how can the aging process be slowed down, stopped and reversed? By neutralizing
the harmful effects of oxidants with anti-oxidant nutrients biological age can be
significantly reduced and life-span increased. In fact the amount of anti-oxidants
contained in the body is directly proportional to length of life or longevity. And fruits and
vegetables with the most color and flavor usually contain the highest levels of antioxidants. The most powerful anti-oxidants include Superoxide Dismuthase, Vitamin C,
Vitamin E, Beta-Carotene, the B Group of Vitamins, Glutathione, Lipoic Acid, Resveratrol,
Co-Enzyme Q10 and Selenium. Anti-oxidants are also found in pure, dark organic
chocolate.

Dimension 9: High Emotional Intelligence (EI)


Although Daniel Goleman did not coin the term Emotional Intelligence it was popularized
through the publication of his book Emotional Intelligence - Why it can matter more than
IQ. Why is EI included as a dimension of optimal health and wellness? Simply because of
what optimal health and wellness is, viz.

Health and wellness is not just the absence of illness and disease but also the
presence of an abundance of energy, vigor and well-being. It is characterized by
vitality, physical and emotional fitness, mental clarity and a profound awareness
and understanding of what is good for the mind and the body. People who are
optimally healthy and well are happy and feel good most or all of the time

As you have seen this definition includes emotional or psychological fitness which really
encompasses the skills of Emotional Intelligence. So what is Emotional Intelligence? It is

The ability to perceive and express emotion, assimilate emotion in thought,


understand and reason with emotion and regulate emotion in self and others
Mayer, Salovey & Caruso (2000)

Emotional competencies are skills or capabilities which are based on emotional


intelligence and which can be learned. They are usually viewed in the context of the work
situation in that it has been shown that strong emotional competencies result in
outstanding performance at work. However for healthy or optimal functioning and
performance in all other spheres of life such as the social and sporting arenas for
example, strength in these competencies are vital too. An EI Domain on the other hand is
a fundamental or overall ability of emotional intelligence within which the various
competencies reside.
There are four EI domains, all of which reflect the overall emotional intelligence potential
that an individual possesses. They include Self-Awareness (having continuous
knowledge of ones feelings, internal resources and intuitions), Self-Management (having
the ability to manage ones impulses and internal states and resources thus enabling the
achievement of goals), Social Awareness (being aware of what others are feelings and
what their needs an concerns are) and Relationship Management (having the ability to
induce desirable or positive responses in other people). Although a person may have
vast potential in a domain, such as a high level of self-awareness for example, the
competencies which reside in that domain (such as self-confidence for example) may be

sub-optimal. The domains and competencies of emotional intelligence can both be


enhanced or strengthened using various technologies, methodologies and practices.
Twenty different competencies of emotional intelligence have been identified and each of
them is associated with a number of different characteristics. It is beyond the limits of this
book unfortunately to discuss the characteristics of each of these emotional
competencies. The twenty competencies themselves however are emotional selfawareness, accurate self- assessment, self-confidence, emotional self-control,
integrity (transparency or trustworthiness), conscientiousness, adaptability,
achievement orientation, initiative, empathy, service orientation, organizational
awareness, developing others, influence, communication, conflict management,
visionary leadership (inspiration), change catalyst, building bonds and teamwork
and collaboration.

Dimension 10: Purposeful Living and Spiritual Well-being


Studies have shown that having a purpose in life and being connected to the Creator or
the Divine and Infinite Intelligence is essential to health and wellbeing.

Evidence

indicates that optimally - healthy and well people have a sense of purpose and feel happy
and fulfilled most or all of the time. They also feel connected to a Power which is higher
than their mind, higher than their thought, higher than themselves; a Power which is
above and beyond Its creation. Spiritually-connected people also tend to be more caring,
more compassionate, than those without a purpose or connection to the Source of
Everything. They nurture this connection through various means such as prayer and
being kind to themselves and others for example. Being connected to The Highest Power

is a completely natural thing and the greater and deeper this connection the more love for
self and others is felt.
Our purpose in life is the reason for us being here on earth. It is a vital part of our spiritual
well-being which is in essence an on-going sense of inner-peace and tranquility
stemming from an awareness of God and our connectedness to Him. The ultimate
purpose of life is to worship the Almighty Creator and do what He expects of us i.e. to
obey Him. It is that which moves us closer to Him, connects us to Him; that which makes
us better people in all respects and which helps us contribute to making this world a
better place. It is what makes life meaningful. Being spiritually well enables us to live a
balanced life in all respects; that is it helps us to have a balanced relationship with our
self, with others and with our environment. Being spiritually well is very important
because it gives meaning to our life. Optimal health and wellness is not possible without
spiritual well-being. Of course people do have lesser purposes in life, things which give
them joy and satisfaction when they are doing them; things which they will spend hours
doing even if they dont receive any monetary gain or other compensation for doing them.
I call these lesser purposes interests. These interests of course change as people
journey through life i.e. they have different interests at different stages of their lives
whereas the primary purpose remains the same. So for example at one stage in your life
you may be interested in art and painting while in another you may want to spend a lot of
time lying on the beach. But throughout your life worshipping God does not change, or
perhaps I should say, should not change.
